MTA Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi and Long Island Rail Road President Phil Eng are joined by Bike New York President Ken Podziba and Alzheimer’s Association Vice President of Development Joanne Luciano in Grand Central Terminal on Thu., August 12, 2021 to announce the elimination of the need for bike permits on MTA railroads. The change will officially go into effect on September 7, but permits will be waived for the Five Boro Bike Tour on August 22.

This month is the 35th anniversary of the Xth British Commonwealth Games - the "Friendly Games" as they came to be known (for our overseas friends, think the Olympic Games, but on a much smaller scale!)
I was just six years old in 1974 but so much from these Games remains vivid and clear in my minds eye. Why that should be I have no idea but it's almost like my childhood memories "kickstart" from this particular moment in time.
I clearly remember Dick Taylor running away from the rest of the field for gold in the 10,000 metres.
The legendary Graham May toppling over during the Super Heavyweight Weightlifting, the bar rolling off the stage onto the lap of Princess Anne and his wonderful classic 70s black-rimmed spectacles smashing on the ground.
John Walker and Rod Dixon vainly trying to chase down the magical Tanzanian Filbert Bayi in the 1500 metres (still - IMHO - the most memorable moment ever in New Zealand sports).
Probably most of all, however, I remember this song: Join Together
"Join Together" was the theme song for the Games and was written by a fellow called Steve Allen (real name: Allen Stephenson). "Join Together" is my favourite piece of music ever - joyous, happy, innocent, basically New Zealand how it used to be and will never be again.
I actually came to know Steve quite well when he ran a magazine shop in Napier in the mid-1990s. I whiled away many a rainy lunch hour yarning with Steve who - it turned out - was an even bigger sports nut than me.
Anyway, this very long-winded spiel is my introduction to our latest Flickr pic - yours truly in a genuine mint-condition 1974 British Commonwealth Games Officials Uniform.
I found this over Christmas and can still scarcely believe my luck. This isn't just any other piece of Commonwealth Games memorabilia - this is the "Holy Grail". The only other complete uniform I have ever seen is at Te Papa -and that was the womens' version.
I have been pondering for a little while now how best to raise this minor but notable New Zealand sporting anniversary.
It took a bit of arm-twisting but I finally persuaded my lovely wife to take some pics of me today (hair plastered down in classic 70's style bowlcut style) to post on here to share with you all as my own small but personal tribute to the greatest Games of all. Enjoy everyone!

*Where are we meeting? Two different locations. For the nightly shoots we will meet in the lobby of the MGM Grand HOTEL. That is for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. For the Workshop on Thursday and Friday we will be meeting at the MGM Grand CONVENTION Center entrance where the WPPI Convention was held.
*When are you shooting? I'm doing nightly shoots on the strip, Monday, Tuesday, and (TBD-Wednesday). These shoots will start at 6pm and will probably go to 10pm. The workshop runs Thursday and Friday starting at 12pm.
*What is the cost? If you pay for the workshop you get all the nightly shoots for FREE! If you only want to come to the nightly shoots they are $25/night.
*Do I need a car? No, but you are responsible for getting to the meeting location each day.
*I am a contest winner and want to register, how do I do that? Simply send me an email letting me know you're coming. We will get you signed up!
*What level of photography is required? Anyone who's attended one of my workshops will tell you that everyone (no joke) from all different skill levels will learn. All levels welcome.

Thousands of university, college and school students – joined by workers – are marching in London and Manchester against Tory cuts to education, fee rises and attacks on jobs and services.
The revolution in Tunisia and uprising in Egypt have clearly inspired the marches. Marchers have chanted, “Egypt, Egypt everywhere.”
London
Aisha, an FE student from Camden in north London said, “I’ve been on all the demonstrations, but some of my friends are here who haven’t been out on the protests before.
“I like the slogan ‘This is only the beginning’, because it’s going to be a long fight against this government.”
Theo, a school student from south east London, took part in the Day X walkouts last year. He said, “Lots of people who want to go to university won’t be able to and people will definitely be affected by the cuts to EMA [Education Maintenance Allowance]. The government is making the wrong people pay – the bankers are getting hundreds of thousands in bonuses.”
For workers, the student protests have been an inspiration.
A GMB rep joining the protest in London said, “I’m here to show solidarity with the students. I’ve got a daughter who has just gone through university and there is no way she would have been able to afford £9,000 a year fees.
“I’m also here to say that I don’t believe in these cuts. We’ve got to stick together workers and students. I think that the TUC demo on the 26 March can give people confidence to fight.”
UCU lecturer Vicky Margree works at the University of Brighton. She said, “We face 100 percent cut in arts and humanities funding which will hit universities hard. And the new fees will make university unaffordable for the majority of people.”
Kelly Rogers, a Unison organiser, said, “Unless we show solidarity with younger people we may as well give up. Students have led the way and enthused workers, showing us how to fight.”
Solidarity with the Egyptian uprising
In London the mood was electric as up to a thousand students joined the many hundreds of people already protesting in solidarity with the Egyptian people outside the embassy off Park Lane.
Chants of “Solidarity, solidarity,” “London and Cairo unite and fight” and “Hey ho Mubarak has to go” are ringing through the air.
One man on the original protest said, “I can’t believe that all these young people have come to support us. This makes us feel even stronger. I can’t wait to send the pictures of all you British people who have come to support us to people back home.”
Before reaching the embassy, the protest stopped outside the Tory HQ at Millbank – a focus of student anger and protests last year – as students chanted, “Tory scum, here we come.”

Splash! starts Sunday, August 16th at 2 pm with DJ Elrik Merlin, of Radio Riel, opening with a watery interlude of dance and music followed by DJ Ktadhn Vesuvino and Caledonia Skytower who steer a unique course for a journey of music and poetry, featuring the Sea in all her alluring, fierce glory. from 6-7 pm SLT. "I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;" (John Masefield - "Sea Fever")
Monday, August 17th, join us for a Kelpy jumping competition under the sea for a chance to take home ribbons, a trophy and gift cards to Elite Equestrian! The Jump competition will be held at 10 am SLT.
Tuesday, August 18th, join us for a jousting lesson with Duchess Atrasalus of Tamriel Isles, Knight of Dragon's Lair, member of the Medieval Games Alliance. Her Grace Atrasalus will teach the ins and outs of jousting, all are welcome and free for use Kelpies will be available for all merfolk and 2-leggers. Joust class is at 12 noon SLT.
Wednesday, August 19th, please join us for our second Kelpy jumping competition under the sea for a chance to take home ribbons, a trophy and gift cards to Elite Equestrian! The Jump competition will be held at 7 pm SLT.
Thursday, August 20th, put your jousting lessons to the test with a formal joust competition, beginning at 12 noon SLT. Duchess Atrasalus of Tamriel Isles will be presiding, please join us for this unique event! Free for use Kelpies will be available for all merfolk and 2-leggers.
Friday, August 21st, please join us at 11 am with DJ Ktahdn, who has provided Sl with many fantasy, Silk Road, and gorgeous themed interludes, who will lead us on his vision of the sea.
and again on Friday, August 21st, as Willow Moonfire, storyteller, lover of fantasy, mystery, and magic as she reads watery tales from the depths at 6 pm SLT.
Saturday, August 22nd, join us first for a lush performance by Idle Rogue's Guerilla Burlesque with their Mermaid-inspired dance routines, followed by our second musical interlude with DJ Caledonia Skytower taking us under the sea from 5-7 pm with a danceable mix of watery tunes: "Above, Below, or Beside the Waves! Whether your on fins, claws, or tentacles. Join us at Splash! for a broad spectrum of music from rock, to country, to contemporary electronic: Rod Stewart, Christopher Cross, Styx, Metric, Pt green, Christine Anu, DNCE and more!"
Sunday, August 23rd, we will host Splash! Stories and Poems presented by Seanchai Library.
What else? During the week, visit the Splash! event to ride the Kelpie -Go-Round and receive an adorable merfolk gift (new every day!), practice over the jump course or jousting list with our free Ride With Me! Kelpies, shop at selected merchants, win unique raffle prizes, find trivia treasure hunt objects to create a special mer crown, plus new product releases, and an art exhibit of mer life in SL.
NOTE: The event space is on an Adult region. While none of our programming explicitly contains "adult" content, there may be adult themes and bare skin. We do ask genitals be kept covered or tucked away.
Join us in the Ars Electronica Center's Deep Space 8K on an interactive journey through St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. The novel insights through the layers of the Cathedral Church were created as a cooperative effort between the Ars Electronica Futurelab, ScanLAB Projects, RIEGL Laser Measurement Systems and the Dombauhütte St. Stephan zu Wien.

Bree joined us for one of our small group shoots we held at the Idaho Capitol Building in Boise. This is such a classy building to shoot in. This was my first shoot with Bree and I didn't have much chance to shoot with her. She is new to modeling and told me she is a burlesque dancer and she wants to do some lingerie shoots. Now she tells me!

ILRI and the India Government are joining hands to provide livestock-dependent people in the state of Odisha with comprehensive ways to improve local feed and fodder resources
On 8 March 2016, ILRI Director General Jimmy Smith, his wife Charmaine Smith, ILRI Representative in South Asia Alok Jha, and ILRI research project leader Braja Swain paid courtesy calls on senior government and university officials in Bhubaneswar, the capital of India's eastern state of Odisha. In the afternoon, Jimmy and Charmaine Smith and Alok Jha were guest speakers at an International Women's Day program at the Centre for Women in Agriculture, an institute of the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the only such institute in all of South and Southeast Asia (photo credit: ILRI/Susan MacMillan).
MORE: In Odisha, the ILRI delegation met with the Chief Secretary, AP Padhi, and the Secretary for Odisha’s Fisheries and Animal Resources Development ( F&ARD) Department, Bishnupada Sethi, to discuss the state of the livestock sector in Odisha and contributions ILRI could make in improving the lives of farmers dependent on livestock.
ILRI has recently submitted a proposal on 'Feed and Fodder Production in Different Agro-climatic Zones and Utilization for Livestock of Odisha' to F&ARD's Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (DAH&VS).
ILRI has been working in Odisha since 2013 in collaboration with Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), the Orissa State Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation (OMFED) and the state government’s DAH&VS and F&ARD to improve the state's livestock productivity through better use of crop residues and locally sourced feed supplements within the framework of the CGIAR Cereal Systems Initiatives for South Asia (CSISA).
An international workshop on 'Improving Livestock Feeding Practice and Enhancement of Feed and Fodder Availability in Odisha' was organized jointly by Society for Management of Information, Learning and Extension (SMILE) and ILRI in 2015.
Based on the workshop’s recommendations, Odisha's F&ARD Department is recommending the preparation of a comprehensive fodder development plan for Odisha.

Seen at the 2008 London Bus Preservation Trust Spring Gathering is JJD 393D, a preserved AEC Routemaster/Park Royal H40/32R bus new to London Transport as RML2393 in January 1966. It later worked for London Northern and Metroline.
