The Boys' & Girl's Handbook: Kadets of America. 1960.
Found this little booklet in a pile of ephemera at an antique store in the Houston Heights.
An interesting bit of Americana--the Kadets of America was a group formed by a company that originally manufactured "dummy" training rifles used by the US Navy. After WWII, the company ended up manufacturing toy guns and pop guns. The Kadets, which had an estimated 16,000 children registered organized drill teams that competed--sort of a Junior-Junior ROTC.
The Kadets disbanded in 1970, probably due to shifting sentiments in American culture. It's somewhat disturbing to think that a group like this was formed, but I suppose the dummy rifles used by modern drill teams in marching bands date back to these sorts of para-millitary training groups.
From Wikipedia: 'In 1953 Parris started the idea of Kadet Military Drill Teams that communities could form. Purchasers of Kadet toy weapons would receive a free comic book drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger for Customs Comics Inc. telling the story of an imaginary boy named Bob Duncan who became a Kadet and advanced to the rank of Captain. The comic book featured instructions how to do the American manual of arms and offered the full range of Kadet Trainer Rifles, cork firing weapons, rank insignia, and dress and fatigue uniforms for both girls and boys featuring a white riding helmet. The brochure also featured a Kadet Officer's Training School located on a 200-acre (0.81 km2) farm in Savannah and a Kadet song. From 1953 to around 1970 when the programme ended, the Kadets had over 16,000 members.;

Greater Manchester's emergency services and Highways England traffic officers joined forces last weekend for one of the biggest ever motorway emergency exercises.
Exercise Dark Knight saw over 100 people respond to a simulated major incident on a closed section of the M62 motorway.
Over 50 volunteers played the part of drivers and passengers involved in a major collision. Their role was to simulate a range of injuries, from cuts and bruises to fatalities.
The exercise was designed to improve responses to major road incidents and ensure coordination between the various emergency services.
