Wild Iris, near St. Mary's, Alaska. I have been particularly fond of iris most of my life. I think it is becasue of my grandmother's garden many years ago. She raised several varieties of giant iris.
We had never seen irises like these before.
The Butchart Gardens began when the Butchart family moved to Vancouver Island to open a limestone quarry and cement plant. Jennie Butchart was an avid gardener, and when the quarry was exhausted, she worked to create her vision of a grand garden.
We took a day tour from Vancouver to Victoria which, of course, included a ferry ride. Our tour guide was wonderful, and the tour itself included stops in downtown Vancouver and the Butchart Gardens.
It has been a banner year for my iris and they continue to put on a show. We've had rain storms this evening and i suspect that a few blooms will be water logged. But the rain barrel is full and everything is lush.

En una zona concreta. Parece segura la identificación a partir de las fotos que hay.
En herbarium.exe aparecen Iris latifolia y xiphium. La comparación me induce a reafirmarme en identificar la especie como I. spuria.
Per Al_HikesAZ:
"They are Irises (Iris missouriensis Nutt. Kearney & Peebles p 195). I checked my reference and I was suprised that they are considered a native species in parts of AZ. Since these are by the fireplace, I suspect that they were planted by the family that lived here. They weren't blooming when I was here. Glad to know the dates that they bloom."
Thanks for your help!
