Photographic Op Art
When doing some research on "Op Art" for my 2D Color Theory class, I came across some information on Wikipedia that really spiked my interest as a challenge.
"Although being relatively mainstream, photographers have been slow to produce op art. In painting, Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley were producing large amounts of art and the same can be said for many digital artists, such as Kitaoka. One of the primary reasons for the lack of photographers doing op art, is the difficulty in finding effective subject matter." - Wikipedia
I took that last sentence as a challenge. Here's my first attempt at some Photographic Op Art, as well as the steps I took in creating this.
- I found a subject matter on the University of Hartford's campus
- Took the photo using my Sigma 10-20mm lens to create more prominent vanishing points
- Processed the camera's RAW image file in Adobe Lightroom 3
- Cropped the photo down to an 11x14 aspect ratio for a more effective compositon
- In Photoshop CS5 I inverted the colors and added a cooling filter, to create the three major classes of color interaction; simultaneous contrast, successive contrast, and reverse contrast.

Artist Statement
Though my objects contain strong visual references, I am more interested in the implied tactile ones; the
things that stir in me a compulsion to touch. Beyond other external inspiration lies this basic, primal
impulse. I recognize – and act upon – a profound desire to push, poke, squeeze, stroke, caress, and
pinch. I intend for my pieces to invoke a similar sort of temptation. Obvious sexual references, along
with an extravagant, fetish-like attention to surface, can arouse a yearning to touch as powerful as the
act itself. In this way a parallel can be drawn with pornography -- my first encounter with Playboy, for
example. My emotional response, utter fascination, depended upon the compelling desire to touch
flesh. The fact that I couldn’t was overcome by my imagined participation. When one views
pornography, I would argue that one is thinking about touching — about how it would feel. I want my
work to elicit a similar response: “What if I could touch it?”.
I am searching for a fresh perspective. I strive to create an object I've never quite seen before - one
whose inherent mystery and intrigue quietly insists upon viewer interaction. An object begging to be
explored and examined in much the same way a child investigates the world: with wonder, curiosity,
and also trepidation. It’s very important that the work be challenging. A sense of unease is critical
because it encourages the viewer to consider carefully what they are seeing – at what is compelling
them. I would like my work to exist not as the ubiquitous "art object", but as something more enigmatic -
foreign yet familiar, handmade yet somehow organic. Rather than suggest nature, in my own way I am
seeking to create it.
Interaction finds a new meaning with the advent of mobile technology. It allows for more 'me' time at the expense of face-to-face interaction which I admit I am guilty of too.

The afternoon I spent on these backroads filled with the wind in the windmills and cornfields have left me with impressions that will last in my mind's eye. The memory will wash over me when I pass any cornfield from now on. The lure of spending more time experiencing the possibility of capturing endless variations of this dance is simmering within me. I appreciate the gift of these images to remind me of that day. I can feel the wind and hear the sounds of the corn leaves whipping and brushing against each other. I can feel the wonder of looking deep into the cornstalks, seeing interactions beyond the passing glance from within a car on the road. It was a good day.

During the weeks of the HWT Experiment, forecasters assess a new tool using rapidly-updating high-resolution gridded Probabilistic Hazard Information (PHI) as the basis for next-generation severe weather warnings. This experiment is part of a broad effort to revitalize the NWS watch/warning paradigm known as Forecasting a Continuum of Environmental Threats (FACETs). The major emphasis of the HWT PHI experiment is on initial testing of concepts related to human-computer interaction while generating short-fused high-impact Probabilistic Hazard Information for severe weather. The long-term goal of this effort is to move the refined concepts and methodologies that result from this experiment into Hazard Services, the next generation warning tool for the NWS, for further testing and evaluation in the HWT prior to operational deployment.

Good Participation
Session with peers
London, Thursday 21 January 2010
About Good Participation
This project examines the role of participation in design practice - when different stakeholders (audience, clients, collaborators...) are asked to take part in the process or the outcome of a design project.
We ask ourselves: how can we design to engage others? We explore how to motivate, share, empower, how to initiate and sustain interaction, how to have a transformative effect on a given public.
The aim is to support designers and organisations to have better conversations about engagement and ultimately, help provide a framework to create successful participation again and again.
About this peer session
We invited practionners from different disciplines interested in engaging people: interactive arts, exhibition design, game design, service design, brand communication and marketing strategy, consumer psychology and trend forecasting.

Tasked with responding to a quote through an interaction exercise me and my partner Lisa McCormack attempted to demonstrate that our quote was not correct in all situations. In one day (and part of the next to my chagrin) my partner and I filmed and carried out the interaction with a couple of random students and I edited, arranged and recorded myself playing a tune I have been working on to go with this piece.
"Solidarity in the Social Justice Community" was an event held on September 27, 2005, in Calgary to try to encourage more interaction and co-operation between local sectors of social justice activism.

Sisters Academy - The Boarding School by Sisters Hope
photo: I diana lindhardt
Photographs are free to use with the credits as formulated above displayed visibly.
Sisters Academy is a school in what we term a sensuous society – a world and society where the sensuous and poetic mode of being is at the center of all action and interaction. It is a performance-experiment and movement initiated by Sisters Hope. The project focuses on the educational system and new more sensuous and poetic modes of learning. Read more here .
Sisters Academy Academy #6 - The Boarding School is co-produced with Den Frie Udstillingsbygning in Copenhagen, Denmark. Den Frie is transformed into a boarding school in September/October 2017 – A laboratory to explore what the school of a Sensuous society might be.
Sisters Academy – The Boarding School
Sisters Academy – The Boarding School is a large-scale immersive and durational performance-installation.
The entire building is transformed into a boarding school where the co-participating audience enroll as students at the school. They are provided with a bed, a set of clothes and basic school materials. In this universe they live their everyday life but on rather different conditions as this is not a school like others but one of a possibly future sensuous society.
Besides taking classes, falling in love with their schoolmates, cooking, doing chores, attending morning and evening gathering they engage with the Sisters Academy staff.
Furthermore the format holds different layers of participation; visiting artists/researchers/teachers, school excursions, concerts and beyond.

Beaver dominance interaction appears shown in this video clip. While hiking the Strathcona Nature Trail I observed two beaver swimming towards me. As they got near me and noticed my presence one did a tail slp action, surfaced again and repeated that behavoir. As I continued west on the trail and along the pond one swam away ahile the other kept pace with me. When the light was now more to my back I recorded its movements. It appeared to start to head toward where the other beaver had gone. So I started hiking again. Then it returned to follow me. This action occurred several times in response to my continuing down on the trail to improve the light angle. I suspect that this was a young pair looking for a winter home site and some how I was perceived as a threat and need to be told to keep on moving away. North of Edmonton.
Although it may seem like a student taking classes online looses the Face to Face interaction with their teacher and other students, the online classroom is becoming more and more able to give the same experiences to students with the use of audio, video, and other interactive tools.

Note: "Long-term common garden out-planting study—Short duration tests in low-stress nursery environments are not well suited for the expression of cumulative response to environmental stresses. Long-term field common garden studies are designed to reveal adaptive-based G-x-E interactions for guiding seed zoning and transfer. Four common garden sites were planted in 1996: Humboldt Nursery in McKinleyville, California, Trinity Lake on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, and Althouse and Chetco on the Siskiyou National Forest. In 1998, an additional site, Battle Axe, was established on the BLM Roseburg District, which expanded the original 266 families to include samples from the northeast part of the range of Port-Orford-cedar."
