Nothing About Us Without Us Is For Us was a public art event using obsolete technology to hurl language across Glasgow's River Clyde. Organised and conceived by artists TS Beall and Matt Baker, the project commissioned 15 artists to partner with 18 local organisations. Together, they delivered 6 weeks of activities, culminating in an event on Saturday 28 April, 2012 where over 1500 people sang, shouted, and sailed across the Clyde. Visitors to the Glasgow International Festival were invited to the Govan waterfront to participate in transmissions using human megaphones, siege engines, string-and-cup telephones, messages-in-bottles (‘The Govan Armada’), choral serenades, and more…

At PEPFAR, we know that ending AIDS as a public health threat cannot be accomplished by any single actor alone. That’s why PEPFAR has formed public-private partnerships, including with The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation to deliver high-quality HIV services for working-age men in one of the highest-burden districts in Malawi, and AstraZeneca to expand access to HIV services for harder-to-reach patients, including men ages 25-50, by concurrently screening for HIV and hypertension.

Lengyan Sacred Temple began to be built in 1922 and completed in 1933. It takes the form of standard rectangle, facing south and covering 8036 sq.kms, about 164 meters long from south to north and 49 meters wide from east to west. Famous for its orderly layout, compact pattern, exquisite structure and subtle sculpture and paintings, the temple was classified into provincial-level key relics-preservation institution.

Its courtyard belongs to three gradation form, fended by the enclosing wall, which appears rather magnificent and splendid. It is well-known as one of the four temples in Northeast Region. From south to north, Shanmen Gates, Heavenly King Hall, Daxiong Sacred Hall and Scripture Storing Hall are aligned on the axis. On both sides stand the bell tower and drum-tower and two ancillary halls. Shanmen Gates, a double Xieshan architecture (a Chinese traditional architecture style), consists of three gates. In addition to the main gate, there are two minor gates on the right and left. Through Shanmen Gates, the first courtyard comes into view, where the bell tower and drum-tower are situated in the east and west, which both were constructed in the double-flying eaves architecture (a Chinese traditional architecture style). Around the beam of the belfry hang a big iron clock with beast- head ring, weighing two tons, and incised an inscription “Yingkou Sacred Temple”. Heavenly King Hall was constructed on the granite above one meter high, as the main body around the first courtyard, which is divided into five rooms in a Chinese traditional architectural style of Yingshan. The main ridge is ornamented by loose-carvings, four dragons playing with pearl. In front and back of the main hall there are the corridors, where follows another little hall. Inside the main hall is the standing statue of Bodhisattva Weituo, while on both sides stands the statues of the Four Heavenly Kings, whose appearances are full of animation. Daxiong Sacred Hall, the main body in the second courtyard serves as the central buildings among the whole temples, five rooms inclusive with a Chinese traditional architecture of Yingshan. On the chief ridge and two sides are relief-carvings, flying dragons playing with night-luminescent pearl which belongs to the tower-styled flaming pearl floating in the middle. It is in the centre of the minor pagoda that a clear mirror is hung on high, glittering with silver. A series of copper statues are displayed in the temple, ranging from Tathagata, the Bodhisattva of Mercy, to the Eighteen Archarts which is one group surviving more intact in Northeast Region. Those statues present various expressions, vivid and true to life, greatly beautifying the Daxiong Sacred Hall. In the centre of the third yard is the last part of the temples, the Scripture Storing Hall, a Xieshan architecture, including a large vault and porch around. The ancillary temples are on both sides in the courtyard, whose layout is compact and orderly, integrating with other parts as a complex

USAG Red Cloud wins its first-ever Army Communities of Exellence Award

By Franklin Fisher

USAG Red Cloud Public Affairs

CAMP RED CLOUD, South Korea – The U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud has won its first-ever Army Communities of Excellence Award, given to military communities that operate at a level of

excellence.

The garrison was awarded an ACOE

honorable mention, and is one of 12 Army garrisons worldwide to receive the ACOE recognition this year.

USAG Red Cloud manages Army

installations in Area I, which stretches from Uijeongbu north of Seoul to Korea’s Demilitarized Zone.

Garrison officials are waiting to

receive a detailed report from ACOE spelling out what it found to be the garrison’s strengths and areas needing improvement, said Ron James, chief of the garrison’s Plans, Analysis and

Integration Office. ACOE sends such reports to all garrisons chosen for awards, he said.

“I think it’s safe to say within a month or so we’ll receive our results,” James said.

But garrison officials believe the award was based heavily on the dramatic strides made in creating the facilities and services needed to transform Area

I from a duty station that for decades was for unaccompanied Soldiers serving without families, to one with command sponsorship for families.

Among some of the most important

of those projects was establishment of Casey Elementary School, Area I’s

first-ever Defense Department school, and completion of its second wing.

Among other key projects completed are renovation of a Community Activity Center at Camp Red Cloud with the addition of a new youth center; the opening at Camp Casey of

a Child Development Center, a School Age Services/Youth Center, and a new Army Community Service building, which serves at the hub for ACS activities in Area I.

Also important were renovation

of outdoor swimming pools at Camp

Casey’s Hanson Fitness Center, and the successful staging of several large-scale community recreational events. Those included an event on

Independence Day, one on Labor

Day, as well as a first-ever DFMWR Expo, which showcased the varied community services provided by the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

Additional factors, garrison officials said, were an award of full accreditation “with commendation” to ACS, it’s first

such recognition after expanding

its services for the growing number of command-sponsored families.

Also, Casey’s commissary won an L. Mendel Rivers Award as the best small overseas commissary from the Defense Commissary Agency, and the award to the Casey Main Dining Facility of a

prestigious runner-up Department of the Army Phillip A. Connelly Award for excellence in Army food service.

Beyond those, said James, officials believe ACOE took note of the garrison’s robust efforts to get information to its

far-flung communities by making the most of advances in communications technology, including use of Facebook.

Chief among those efforts were

USAG Red Cloud’s live broadcasts of town hall meetings via UStream on Facebook.

And a survey that brought

predominantly favorable comments

from employees who were asked their opinions of the garrison also weighed in the garrison’s favor, James said.

But an even more crucial indicator of customer satisfaction, garrison

officials said, are the Interactive Customer Evaluation, or ICE comments it received. Of the 9,027 comments submitted in 2011, said James, 95 percent gave the garrison an overall satisfactory rating.

Meanwhile, a number of important

projects are either recently completed or currently under way, including the move of both the Warrior Reception Center and Central Issue Facility from

Camp Stanley to Camp Hovey; a $4

million project to renovate indoor pools at Camps Red Cloud, Hovey and Stanley; and a $1.2 million renovation of the West Casey Chapel, among others.

“I’m delighted that our garrison –

for the first time ever – was named an Army Community of Excellence,” said Col. Hank Dodge, commander of USAG Red Cloud and Area I.

“I’m proud of our employees and I

know they take great pride in serving our community,” Dodge said. “But the real beneficiaries of this award are the Soldiers, civilian employees and family members who call Warrior Country their home. We’ve really improved our

service to the community and it will only continue to get better.”

ACOE will present the winning

garrisons with their awards at a formal ceremony at the Pentagon May 1, James said.
