This is a close-up of one small section of the American Fly Honeysuckle (Lonicera canadensis) shown in Part 33 of this series.
In this part of North America, honeysuckles are often most frequently encountered either in horticultural settings or as weedy alien shrubs escaped from them. So it’s always a joy to come across a native member of Lonicera thriving in its preferred natural habitat.
As the years have rolled on, I’ve become more and more interested in the life cycles of plants, and I find it particularly fascinating how deciduous woody species handle the energy-intensive and potentially risky responsibility of producing a new crop of leaves each spring. Some species, oaks for example, have a conservative strategy and wait till frost-free weather is more of a certainty. But others, like my friend here, want to produce new foliage and even flowers just as soon as they can.
This photo illustrates that leaf tissue that has not yet developed its protective cuticle layer, not to mention its full flush of greening chlorophyll, has a particularly tender and even fragile appearance. But, before you know it, it has hardened off into its darker-tinted mature form.
