The Uspensky (Assumption) Orthodox cathedral is a pasteboard of Kharkov city. First (wooden) church was built at this place in 1658, later dismantled due to decrepitude. In 1688 the first stone building was constructed, twice reconstructed until the definite building was completed in 1783, in style of Ukrainian baroque. Due to some versions the project was made by famous architect Quarenghi. Iconostasis installed here was a work of Rastrelli (looted and destroyed by Germans in 1941)
In 1821-1844 the belfry was built in style of classicism, 300 feet high. At the moment of construction - the highest building of Russian empire. Built in honor of Victory over Napoleon I. Architects - Ton and Vasilieff. Depth of basement - 33 feet. Basement walls - 20 feet thick. 12 bells, from 18 pounds to 35000 pounds. 3.5 mln bricks have been expended.
At 1924 the first broadcast station in the Ukraine was installed in the cathedral, and it's spire served as aerial.
The cathedral suffered badly from Nazis during the Great Patriotic war 1941-1945, a lot of beautiful ancient buildings neighboring with cathedral have been totally annihilated by bombardments.
In 1973-1982 great restoration works were carried, returning the original exterior view of the cathedral and partially the interior.
Every cathedral's vistor may be strikened by special kind of optical illusion, i.e. interior is much more greater than exterior. At the exterior the very cathedral is looking as small building — in comparison with huge belfry. But coming inside anybody may realize how large is this cathedral. (The belfry is separated by ceiling and is prohibited to visit by any stranger). But talent and skill of old builders were so great that externall wiew of all building doesn't looking ugly. Giant belfry doesn't suppress the very cathedral but make it looking slim and charmly.
In 1986 the Czhech-built organ 'Rieger Kloss' was installed in the cathedral's sanctuary and 472-place Organ music hall was opened. This organ has excellent sounding and is places just at the best place. Excellent acoustic of the building and top quality of organ are joined with talent and skill of Kharkov musicians-organists. The result is really magnificient. A listener from the first tacts og organ music literally submerges into deep of music and stills as under hypnosis until the end of
concert. So this hall may be considered as one of the best organ music hall all over the World. Unfortunately, the lethal judgment to the organ already has been signed.
Top Ukrainian Orthodox Church authorities already have managed to glorify their names by such pious deeds as confiscation of orphans shelters and TB-patients clinics (as those as others were simply thrown onto the street) — to profit of the Church, etc.
So nobody of the flock was specially surprized when Church bosses demanded from municipal authorities to ruin the organ and to recover the cathedral building into Church possession — undoubtedly in a fit of Chrisitian Charity. This demand have been satisfied. So Kharkovians are listening the organ sounds it's last monthes.

Успенский собор — визитная карточка Харькова. Первая (деревянная) церковь на его месте была построена в 1658 — позже разобрана по ветхости. Дважды на этом же месте строились каменные церкви, пока в 1783 году не было сооружено нынешнее строение, в стиле украинского барокко. По некоторым источникам, автором проекта был знаменитый архитектор Кваренги. Внутри был установлен иконостас работы Растрелли (разграбленный и уничтоженный немцами в 1941).
В 1821-1844 к собору пристроена колокольня в стиле классицизм — длительное время самое высокое здание Российской империи. Построена в честь победы над Наполеоном. Архитекторы — Васильев и Тон. Глубина фундамента — 10 м. Толщина стен цоколя — 6 м. 12 колоколов от 8 кг до 16 тонн весом. На постройку колокольни израсходовано 3,5 млн кирпичей.
В 1924 в здании собора установлена первая на Украине широковещательная радиостанция. Шпиль собора служил антенной.
Собор сильно пострадал от гитлеровцев во время Великой Отечественной войны, а большинство прекрасных старинных зданий вокруг него разрушены бомбардировками полностью.
В 1973-1982 осуществлялись большие реставрационные работы. Собору возвращен первоначальный внешний вид и (частично) восстановлен интерьер.
Любой посетитель собора будет поражен любопытной оптической иллюзией “внутри больше, чем снаружи”. Снаружи сам собор кажется миниатюрным — в сравнении с гигантской колокольней. Но войдя внутрь, поражаешься, насколько велико в действительности здание собора. (Колокольня отделена потолком и вход на нее для посторонних строго воспрещен). Но мастерство и талант древних зодчих столь велики, что снаружи весь комплекс в целости не выглядит дисгармонично. Устремленная в небо колкольня не подавляет собор, а придает ему изящный вид.
В 1986 г. В алтарной части собора установлен орган чешской фирмы “Ригер Клосс” и открыт зал Органной и Камерной музыки на 472 места. Этот орган имеет отличное звучание и установлен исключительно удачно. Великолепная акустика здания, высшее качество музыкального инструмента сочетаются с талантом и мастерством харьковских исполнителей. Результат просто фантастический. Слушатель с первых тактов погружается в глубину звуков и буквально пребывает под музыкальным гипнозом до самого конца представления. Так что этот зал по праву может быть причислен к лучшим органным залам мира.
Увы, смертный приговор ему уже подписан.
Иерархи Украинской Православной Церкви уже успели прославиться такими БОГОУГОДНІМИ ДЕЯНИЯМИ, как конфискация в пользу церкви приютов для детей-сирот и диспансеров для туберкулезных больных (и тех, и других попросту вышвырнули на улицу).
Так что никто из паствы особо не удивился, что в порыве христианского милосердия авторитеты добились от муниципальных властей решения о ликвидации органа и о передаче собора в собственность Церкви — несомненно, В ПОРЫВЕ ХРИСТИАНСКОГО МИЛОСЕРДИЯ.
Так что харьковчане слышат звуки органа последние месяцы.
