In the late 1940s the RNZAF ordered 12 Mk 31M Freighters. This variant of the Mk 21 was fitted with a dorsal fin, chin windows and 32 removable seats. The 'M' was the Military version of Mk 31 with provision for supply dropping. All 12 RNZAF Freighters were also specially modified during construction and fitted with superphosphate hopper chutes, although only NZ5904 was used in the topdressing role.
RNZAF Freighters ranged as far as supplying the New Zealand Army in Malaya, the British High Commissions (and other support staff) in the Maldives, Ceylon, India and Nepal, performing Far East Air Force tasks in Malaya and Hong Kong. They ran a highly reliable military shuttle service for allies in Thailand during the Vietnam War and served several other roles, being modified for — amongst other things — aerial top dressing.
Following the successful trials using various RNZAF aircraft in 1948 and 1949, in 1950, farmers' groups lobbied the government to have the RNZAF provide subsidised topdressing with the Bristol Freighters and even advocated using large Handley Page Hastings. Subsequently, the 12 Bristol Freighters under construction for the RNZAF were all modified to take superphosphate hoppers. But by this time government work was being overtaken by private enterprise as ex-air force pilots bought NZ-built de Havilland Tiger Moth biplanes cheaply, placed a hopper in the front seat and went into business flying from the paddocks of any farmer willing to pay. The RNZAF was becoming aware of the Communist threat and preferred to concentrate on defence matters and the government was reluctant to spend money on commercial operations, or interfere with the increasing number of commercial operators.

The North East Community Assembly has purchased a colliery wheel which has been installed on Holywell Road, near to the junction of Colliery Road in Brightside, as a memorial to the 9 miners who were killed in 3 separate accidents in Brightside Colliery. Cllr Peter Price has been researching the details and has found an old map that shows that the place where the colliery wheel has been installed is directly opposite to where the entrance to the mine used to be. A plaque is being designed to explain the history and the reason why the wheel has been placed in this position. The assembly has received this comment from a Brightside resident – ‘I have lived in Brightside for 25 yrs, and often feel we are a forgotten part of Sheffield, every thing seems to go to Burngreave or Grimthorpe down the road. But the other day I saw a wheel being erected on Holywell Road close to the public footpath going up to Limpsfield School. Could you tell me what it is for, and who organised it. This is not a complaint far from it, it is good someone has taken the time to organise it.’
The Brightside Colliery – In memory of all those men who lost their lives in the Brightside Colliery The Penny Illustrated Paper 20th April 1867
12th April 1867 – At Brightside Colliery, near Sheffield, five men were killed on Friday evening, the 12th inst. They were descending the pit to begin work when the wire rope broke, and they fell to the bottom a depth of 200 yards. All were killed instantly.
Bates Thomas aged 60 (Firetrier), Bergin Joshua age 18 (Filler), Fox George aged 36 (Labourer), Fox James aged 42 (Labourer), and Goldstraw John aged 26 (Collier)
The Coroner Mr Webster attached no blame to anyone connected with the colliery but supposed it “to have been caused by a defect in the manufacture of the rope which did not show until it broke and sent the men down the shaft to their deaths”
23rd October 1865 – Explosion of Firedamp at Brightside Colliery
A loud explosion was heard near to the main level at about 7-30 am. A large volume of deadly gas has rushed out from a fissure in the coal face and it ignited by a naked flame being used by Francis Milburn. He was severely burned and the force of the blast threw him against a pillar fracturing his skull. Death was instant. The blast passed down the workings and struck George Parker, and his son of 14 years. Both died later that day

I recently removed the AC system in my BMW e30 and installed a large cooling fan (sourced from an E36 BMW 328i) in place of the AC condenser. I bought the car with a broken clutch fan, not broken as in not functioning but broken off and missing. A few years back I had the exact same thing happen on my wife's 735iL and before that my 1984 Datsun Maxima had a clutch fan fail & tear my radiator to pieces with almost immediate coolant loss. The point is I'm not a fan of clutch fans and so I decided to attack my problem head-on, I installed a bigger fan than required, eliminated the condenser which slows & inhibits cooling by / to the primary radiator and I wired in the Snowflake (AC) button to operate the fan only when I decide it's necessary. I've always been good at watching the temperature gauge.
A friend (Ram) from the North Texas Electric Auto Association (www.nteaa.org) brought me this new cool container from "The Container Store" we built and installed an HHO Generator in his Lexus, and I just rebuilt mine in one of the containers as well, and reinstalled it.
I like this container as it has clips on the side that snaps the lid on. It has a rubber seal, and is very heavy duty.
It is also perfectly SEE THRU , so monitoring the cell plates is very easy to do now.
Remember: I've found the trick to keeping these things working at least with the citric acid for an electrolyte, is to change out the liquid once it "carmelizes to a dark color" with a fresh batch. You can't just install it, and forget about it. You've got to be willing to maintain them, and keep them running at optimum, if you want to obtain consistant MPG improvement.

I installed the meter box and mast to the wall. Added some cloth wrapped conduit made from squished-to-oval solder with some texture applied with a file. Finished with thickish acrylic paint that I picked at with a toothpick to simulate crumbly insulation. I found numerous photos showing this stuff just looping up thru holes in the siding. Guess it worked. Still needs some clamps though, to bring it up to code.

INSTALLATIONS MOUVANTES | IN SITU

This inverter will take power from the trailer's battery and create a source of 110 volt 60 cycle power. It is installed under the front driver side bench seat. The power is supplied to the top half of three of the power outlets in the trailer. Inverter power is also supplied to the exterior 110 volt outlet. An outlet was installed under the passenger side bench seat to allow switching the exterior outlet from shore power to inverter power. The inverter can be turned on and off with a toggle switch located next to the front power outlet. See gpelectric.com/
When we are dry camping or driving the battery will be charged with our solar panel through the solar power controller, which is at the bottom of the photo.
SAFETY ALERT! (Sept 26 2013.) I have just become aware that supplying both inverter power and shore power to the same outlet box is a hazard if there is any possibility of power being on in one of the outlets while off on the other, since an unsuspecting person opening the box may be put in a hazardous situation. To solve this problem I am in the process of buying and installing a manual transfer switch so that power to the outlets can be switched from shore power to inverter power. Both top and bottom outlets will be at the same voltage.
