TRASLATOR

Estación Esquina Negra

The place was known by the name of Black Corner from before the foundation of La Plata, and owes its name to a pulpería or "Esquina" (name given colloquially to this type of facilities), located on the outskirts of the place, whose walls were blackened by the action of time.

By the year 1886, they began to install fairs in the area, destined to market animals from the outskirts of the province of Buenos Aires. This area, was formerly served by the branch of the General Railway Company in the Province of Buenos Aires (CGBA) that covered the 88 km of the González Catán - La Plata Station (KM 88) and the Puerto de La Plata, from the July 27, 1910. In 1953 a junction of this branch (already nationalized) is made with the Provincial Railway of Buenos Aires (branch La Plata to Meridian V), driving traffic to the port through the latter. The ex-CGBA roads from the Port of La Plata to the level crossing with the former FCPBA, west of Esquina Negra, were built in the 1950s. In this way the building of the Esquina Negra station and the section of the branch towards La Plata (CGBA) were completely abandoned.

The station was part of the branch that, leaving González Catán, reached La Plata Station (KM 88), corresponding to the General Railway Company in the Province of Buenos Aires. It worked until its closing date in 1948. Since then, the route to González Catán was made through the provincial railway via Empalme Etcheverry.

Installed in the courtyard of MoMA-PS1. "Le Grand Soir" (The Big Night) by artist Yto Barrada

From the museum's website:

Yto Barrada (French-Moroccan, b. 1971) transforms the courtyard with a colorful arrangement of towering sculptures built from stacked concrete blocks, which visitors can sit on and explore. Barrada often mines the hidden histories embedded within architectural and geometric forms, revealing the intersections of material, political, and personal narratives. For Le Grand Soir, Barrada looks to the tradition of constructing human pyramids in Morocco, where their distinctive applications have ranged from martial arts and acrobatics to spiritual practices. Each of Barrada’s structures takes inspiration from an acrobatic formation used by Moroccan acrobats: tqal (weight), bourj tarbaite (tower of four), and bourj benayma ou chebaken (tower lift with net). They also draw on subjects as wide-ranging as Moroccan Brutalism and Barrada’s family lore, weaving together distinct historical moments of shapeshifting, surmounting barricades, and retooling architectures.

Needs more work....

My husband, an adventurous gardener, installed a light in our backyard fountain and decided to let the fountain feature run all winter long in order to see what would happen. A few weeks ago the fountain formed a suspiciously phallic ice sculpture overnight. More recently the fountain formed this unabashedly volcano shaped cone and appeared quite striking with the morning sun reflecting the color of the surrounding rock.
