Finally, I catch up with the Sea Installer in Belfast.

The goal of the trip was to get the Svanen. The Sea Installer was a bonus!

These new turbines from MHI Vestas Offshore Wind are very, very impressive!

The North East Community Assembly has purchased a colliery wheel which has been installed on Holywell Road, near to the junction of Colliery Road in Brightside, as a memorial to the 9 miners who were killed in 3 separate accidents in Brightside Colliery. Cllr Peter Price has been researching the details and has found an old map that shows that the place where the colliery wheel has been installed is directly opposite to where the entrance to the mine used to be. A plaque is being designed to explain the history and the reason why the wheel has been placed in this position. The assembly has received this comment from a Brightside resident – ‘I have lived in Brightside for 25 yrs, and often feel we are a forgotten part of Sheffield, every thing seems to go to Burngreave or Grimthorpe down the road. But the other day I saw a wheel being erected on Holywell Road close to the public footpath going up to Limpsfield School. Could you tell me what it is for, and who organised it. This is not a complaint far from it, it is good someone has taken the time to organise it.’

The Brightside Colliery – In memory of all those men who lost their lives in the Brightside Colliery The Penny Illustrated Paper 20th April 1867

12th April 1867 – At Brightside Colliery, near Sheffield, five men were killed on Friday evening, the 12th inst. They were descending the pit to begin work when the wire rope broke, and they fell to the bottom a depth of 200 yards. All were killed instantly.

Bates Thomas aged 60 (Firetrier), Bergin Joshua age 18 (Filler), Fox George aged 36 (Labourer), Fox James aged 42 (Labourer), and Goldstraw John aged 26 (Collier)

The Coroner Mr Webster attached no blame to anyone connected with the colliery but supposed it “to have been caused by a defect in the manufacture of the rope which did not show until it broke and sent the men down the shaft to their deaths”

23rd October 1865 – Explosion of Firedamp at Brightside Colliery

A loud explosion was heard near to the main level at about 7-30 am. A large volume of deadly gas has rushed out from a fissure in the coal face and it ignited by a naked flame being used by Francis Milburn. He was severely burned and the force of the blast threw him against a pillar fracturing his skull. Death was instant. The blast passed down the workings and struck George Parker, and his son of 14 years. Both died later that day

Sixty years ago, children in Tolleson were separated at school by the color

of their skin until a group of parents banded together to fight for equal

rights.

The Tolleson Elementary District will pay tribute at 6 p.m. Friday at

Porfirio H. Gonzales Elementary, 9401 W. Garfield St., to the people and

landmark decision that desegregated their schools.

It started in 1949 when a 16-year-old boy, John "Juan" Camacho, challenged

the district's policy to segregate pupils. He went before the school board,

but saw no results.

The next year, parents filed a lawsuit against the district with the help of

three attorneys who donated their services, and Gonzales vs. Sheely was

heard in the U.S. District Court of Arizona.

On March 26, 1951, a judge ruled that segregation of children in separate

buildings because of racial or national origin constitutes a denial of the

equal protection of the laws guaranteed to petitioners as citizens of the

United States.

Goodyear resident Mary Ellen Gannon, 69, was in fourth grade when the

decision was handed down. Her father, Porfirio Gonzales, was the lead

plaintiff in the case.

"My father was a very humble person," she said. "He and this group of people

did what they had to do and never expected recognition. They were very brave

and fought for what was right."

One of the district's elementary schools was named after Gonzales, who died

in 2006 at the age of 90. Now, a tribute panel sits in front of the campus

to honor everyone involved. Part of it reads:

"This memorial is dedicated to all the brave individuals that fought with

great courage and humility to bring an end to the segregation of the

Tolleson Elementary Schools. They believed in the spirit of the United

States Constitution, that all children will be afforded the right to a truly

equal education. Their legacy is a firm reminder that the fight for social

justice continues."

The people who signed the suit were John "Juan" Camacho, Cruz Gonzales de

Contreras, Faustino Curiel, Isauro and Lupe Favela, Angelita Fuentes,

Trinidad Gem Jr., Joe Gonzales, Porfirio Gonzales, Patsy Murrieta, Manuel

Pena Sr. and Manuel "Lito" Pena Jr. The attorneys were Ralph Estrada, Greg

Garcia and A.L. Wirin.

The panel's wording was put together by a committee made up of their

relatives and also community leaders who are well-versed with the history,

including Mayor Adolfo Gamez.

"It's very important that we remember this history in Tolleson and the

people who sacrificed in many ways to make this a reality in terms of

desegregation of the schools," Gamez said.

"Most importantly is to remember that this is something that shouldn't

happen again. That's the message we were trying to send, and make sure kids

understand the history of this community."

Multiple people have been invited to speak at the event, including a pupil

from the district's JAG program and also a member of the Tolleson Teen

Council.

"Our youth speakers are symbolic of the power of the youth voice as agents

of change," P.H. Gonzales Principal Juan Medrano said.

A reception in the school cafeteria will follow the ceremony.

The tribute panel was included with other major renovations made at P.H.

Gonzales Elementary, including a new administration building and additional

science, computer and math classrooms.

The $2.9 million project added 11,800 square feet to the campus, which

accommodates about 930 pupils. The district used bond and adjacent ways

money.

"We've been very active in upgrading technologies by bringing in Smart

Boards and getting our kids better connected with more modern and advanced

technologies, so this building here in terms of its wiring capabilities,

supports that much better than our old building did," Medrano said.

For AskMe: installing an A/C unit in a jalousie window. For the sake of aesthetics (already a very low bar when dealing with ugly window units) I didn't want L brackets on top but I was prepared to put them in, if it needed it. It didn't need it, the pair of L brackets on the underside are more than enough.

Right now, I have the gap between the glass panes and the unit blocked off with one of the panes I removed from the window. It's simply resting on top of the unit and leaning against the bottom-most pane. This means the pane covering the gap falls out if I open the jalousie window. As this particular window has two sections with separate controls, I just open the top section and leave the bottom one shut. Come this winter, I'll probably have to come up with a better solution (no doubt inspired by a forecast of a cold snap).

Installed the last of the Christmas Lights to both the front and the back of the house here at Fern Bay, could not quiet achieve what I had planned, but it will have to do for this year.

The Korumburra Railway Station complex was constructed in what was subsequently christened, Station Street, by G. Vincent in 1907 on the Melbourne-Port Albert Line for the Victorian Railways.

Designed by architect Charles Norman, the complex comprises of a large predominantly single storey brick station building with an upper level residence. The grand red brick Federation Queen Anne style building features stuccoed banding, terra cotta tiled hip and gable roof with ridge cresting, dormer windows, cantilevered platform verandah and a pedimented entrance to the lobby. No expense was spared on the décor inside the railway station’s public rooms which feature elegant fireplaces in the restaurant, waiting rooms and railway master’s office and waiting room. All these rooms also feature Art Nouveau pressed metal detailing inlaid into the wood panels around the dados. A wooden fire surround can be found in the station master’s waiting room, whilst grander ones featuring mirrors and pressed metal panels may be found in the railway restaurant and waiting room. It is however the ceilings of these rooms which are perhaps their most breathtaking feature. Vaulted and arched, all are completed using Art Nouveau pressed metal and the light well in the restaurant is complimented with its original mirrors to help make the room more light filled. All the interiors have been lovingly restored from years of neglect by a small but dedicated group of local historical and railway enthusiasts. Several false ceilings installed in the 1960s and 1970s to lower heating costs revealed these magnificent features. Other structures in the complex include the corrugated iron clad goods shed, the brick pedestrian subway and the up side building.

The Korumburra Railway Station complex is historically significant as an important element of the Great Southern Railway and for its role as a marshalling point for goods trains that faced steep descents in both directions, as the junction for lines from local coal mines and as the starting point for other branch services. In a local sense, it demonstrates the early significance of Korumburra that, at the time, was the largest and most important town in the Shire of Gippsland. Aesthetically, it is the most outstanding station building and the largest complex in the Shire and demonstrates the importance of Korumburra as the major station on the South Eastern Railway. It is a significant and a rare example of a station building in Federation Queen Anne style. Socially, it played an important role in the development of the Korumburra community and is an important part of the identity of the town. The Korumburra Railway Station complex is also included on the Victorian Heritage Register.

Korumburra is a medium-sized dairy and farming town in country Victoria, located on the South Gippsland Highway, 120 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. Surrounded by rolling green hills, the town has a population of a little over 4,000 people. Korumburra has built itself on coal mining (after the discovery of a coal seam in 1870), local forestry and dairy farming. Whilst the coal seam has been used up, farming in the area still thrives and a great deal of dairy produce is created from the area. The post office in the area opened on the 1st of September in 1884, and moved to the township on the railway survey line on the 1st of November 1889, the existing office being renamed Glentress. The steam railway connecting it with Melbourne arrived in 1891. Whilst the train line has long since operating commercially, it has found a new life as the popular tourist railway the South Gippsland Railway which operates a heritage railway service between the major country centre of Leongatha and the small market town of Nyora.

Seats are added next. Fit into position and ensure they sit flat on the frames. Sand off any excess wood, if required, for a perfect fit.

Technicians install the front foam piece onto R2's SLEEPR.

I installed the meter box and mast to the wall. Added some cloth wrapped conduit made from squished-to-oval solder with some texture applied with a file. Finished with thickish acrylic paint that I picked at with a toothpick to simulate crumbly insulation. I found numerous photos showing this stuff just looping up thru holes in the siding. Guess it worked. Still needs some clamps though, to bring it up to code.
