Chinese paper lanterns come in various shapes and sizes, as well as various methods of construction.

In their simplest form, they are simply a paper bag with a candle placed inside, although more complicated lanterns consist of a collapsible bamboo or metal frame of hoops covered with tough paper. Sometimes, other lanterns can be made out of colored silk (usually red) or vinyl. Silk lanterns are also collapsible with a metal expander and are decorated with Chinese characters and/or designs.

When red lanterns are a symbol of Happiness and Prosperity, often being hang in front of Chinese homes / buildings during festive celebrations.

Theme: Patterns/Repititions

So, this is a start to a couple series' I will be working on! This is inspired by this song from The Devil's Carnival (ignore the duet parts. I'm not sure why it's there.). Marcus showed me that movie a month or so ago, and while I admit I didn't enjoy the whole thing, the last three songs were incredible! I instantly wanted to create images accompanying them, this being the first. There will be about 4-5 images for each series, this one being 'Grief'. I can't wait to create my ideas and show you guys! I have big plans for these.

Anyways, with this theme, I had an entirely different idea, something more like my previous image in this project. But after seeing the movie, I knew this idea would be perfect for it. It's about a father who loses his son, and can't get over the grief of it. It kind of reminded me of an episode of Hoarders, too. There was a couple who lost a tiny baby girl, and she had a really hard time getting rid of her baby clothes and toys, and I kind of wanted to portray something similar with this, like it's a shrine, and instead of dolling it up with fancy manipulations, I wanted it to be very simple. In fact, hardly any editing went into this at all. I wanted the image to speak for itself, not the fancy editing.

Also, I'm in my new apartment! This is part of the living room. I'll be taking a lot of photos inside, now. It's such a photogenic place, at least so far. ;) And I'll have two more images to post throughout this weekend, too!! :) (They're older, but I'm already behind, so oh well. Hehe)

A concern a lot of us girls have in common is how to enjoy our female side at and around the house and not become a burden for people living around you. Of course we have every right to do as we please but we must also be good neighbors and not impose our lifestyle on them. A few weeks ago my neighbors found out about Lisa. I was coming home and have to pass close to their drive to enter mine and they saw me. I didn't try to hide and make it weird for everyone so I decided to be up front and say hello and explain it was me. The Mom and her daughter couldn't have been nicer and said they had absolutely no problem with it and complimented my look. The Mom had said that she saw me once before but didn't put one and one together thinking it was a female that I knew over visiting me. Today after coming home form shopping, they had just happen to be pulling in their drive right as I was. I didn't run inside but rather said hello to them. It was obvious from shopping bags that they had been shopping as well and like any woman would asked them where they went and what they got and they did the same to me. So we chatted for a few minutes outside their house and then THEY asked me if they could take a picture of me in my cute outfit! I said sure and asked would they mind posing with me for a few shots. We grabbed our shopping bags and posed for pictures on their front porch and agreed to go shopping one day and maybe go to dinner somewhere afterwards. Sometimes it just pays to be honest and makes It easier coming and going without fear of being seen!

There's nothing I love more than dusk. Sun setting. Orange sun rays streaming through the window blinds. It makes me warm inside. It really melts my heart each time.

Straight from the heart!

" I could start dreaming but it never ends

As long as you're gone we may as well pretend

I've been dreaming

Straight from the heart

Oh give it to me straight from the heart

Tell me we can make another start

You know I'll never go

As long as I know

It's coming straight from the heart

I'll see you on the street some other time

And all our words would just fall out of line

While whe're dreaming

straight from the heart ...."

LISTEN!!

I'll take you just the way you are

imperfect words inside the perfect song

I feel you closer than you are

I've been waiting far too long

too long

(CHORUS)

It's my declaration

to anyone whose listening

you're my inspiration

as I stand alone against the world

Cause you love

Can you bleed (?)

cause you stole my soul

and set me free

it's my declaration

do you care what i believe

or that i wear a heart upon my sleeve

sometimes i think you never knew

the only truth i see is you

it's you

Me and my other Daivd Cook loving friend figured this song was about someone who had secretly loved another for a long time and never said anything. But now, you dont even care if its too late youve just got to get it out and shout it from the roof tops. You dont even care if no one listens. And this is true for me. Personal. :( Hope you enjoy this and come back tomorrow for the next one!

Replaced old file coz it looked too blue when viewed with other devices.

Thank goodness that I had - and still have - a towering figure in my life that served as the quintessential role model for me. I salute her - and mothers everywhere - today.

Here's something I wrote about her a few years ago that still rings so true to this very second:

As I have aged, I have become more acutely aware of the impact my Mother has had on my development as a man. Simply said - I am the man I am today because of her.

Strong statement, huh? Surely a man is a combination of a lot of inputs over the course of his life. School, friends, events, successes and failures all create the man - don't they?

The simple fact in my case is that the foundation my Mother built below me during my formative years has supported everything that was later erected upon that firm ground. And I truly believe that her role as a Mother made her one of the most successful humans to walk on this planet. And no - she was not wealthy. Nor famous. But she was impactful....and that's the true descriptor for this magnificent woman.

What did she do to deserve such accolades? She set a loving, living example every day as a single Mother. She mothered her sons as if that was the most important role any person could ever hold. And she constantly taught. Sometimes by words...and often by actions.

She taught her two sons that whether they lived in a small house....or a large one....didn't matter one bit. And she taught them that success and failure were simply two different sides of the same mirror. She taught them how to laugh and when to cry. She taught them optimism and courage. And above all - she taught them that what really mattered... above all else.... was her belief in them as individuals. She constantly reinforced in them that they could do anything they wanted to do in life. And she transferred that belief...one day at a time....until that belief resided deep inside of each son.

And, of course - as is so often the case in self fulfilling prophecies - the boys listened...and learned... started believing....and prospered. They both became over achievers in school...and in their careers. And if you peel back all their layers....you would surely uncover the inner core inside of each man. And that core was planted, nurtured and allowed to grow because one woman realized that her eternal legacy would be her children. And instead of leaving the maturation of those children to chance....she made their evolution to adulthood her prime aspiration.

In fact, if there is such a thing as a doctorate in motherhood - my mother achieved it with highest honors.

Thankfully, this wonderful woman now is passing on that inner strength...that inner resolve....to a new set of her descendants. And surely those grandchildren will one day experience the realization that much of what they are is directly attributable to the effort of one remarkable woman.

Motherhood....truly God's best gift to mankind.

Taken for Our Daily challenge: PIECES, the Topic for Sunday, 9 February 2014

When the challenge of preserving the 1897 schooner proved too great, it was dismantled and the planks that had been preserved before the waterline were fashioned into this sculpture. The 11,000 pound sculpture hangs from the ceiling of the new Museum of History and Industry in Seattle, usually baffling visitors and prompting murmurs of "What the...?" I love going inside it and touching the smooth old wood (it's an "interactive"), but many people are still waiting for it to grow on them.

The Eastern State Penitentiary (ESP is a former American prison in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is found at 2027 Fairmount Avenue between Corinthian Avenue and North 22nd Street in the Fairmount section of the city, and was operational from 1829 until 1971. The penitentiary refined the revolutionary system of separate incarceration first pioneered at the Walnut Street Jail which emphasized principles of reform rather than punishment.[5] Notorious criminals such as bank robber Willie Sutton and Al Capone were held inside its innovative wagon wheel design. When the building was erected it was the largest and most expensive public structure ever constructed, quickly becoming a model for more than 300 prisons worldwide

Wallington is a country house and gardens located about 12 miles (19 km) west of Morpeth, Northumberland, England, near the village of Cambo. It has been owned by the National Trust since 1942, after it was donated complete with the estate and farms by Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan, the first donation of its kind. It is a Grade I listed building.

The estate was owned by the Fenwick family from 1475 until their financial problems caused them to sell their properties to the Blacketts. The hall house was rebuilt in 1688 around the ancient Pele Tower house for Sir William Blackett and was later substantially rebuilt again, in Palladian style, for Sir Walter Blackett by architect Daniel Garret, before passing to the Trevelyan family in 1777. Charles Philips Trevelyan inherited the property from his father George Otto Trevelyan in 1928.

After Pauline Jermyn married the naturalist Sir Walter Calverley Trevelyan, they began hosting literary and scientific figures at the Hall. As a cultural centre, Wallington visitors included the members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

Set in 100 acres (40 ha) of rolling parkland, the estate includes a wooded dene (valley), ornamental lakes, lawns, and a recently refurbished walled garden.

Alongside the beautifully furnished interior, attractions inside the house include the desk where Thomas Babington Macaulay, brother-in-law of Charles Edward Trevelyan, wrote his History of England, a large collection of antique dollshouses and eight murals in the central hall depicting the history of Northumberland, painted by William Bell Scott.

The National Trust also own the estate of which the house is a part; the produce from these farms, as well as others in the region, is sold in a farm shop on site. The farm shop shut in 2012.

It had been a few hours at the party, and I bumped into an old friend. We talked for a while, and I couldn't help but notice that he changed his look.

I asked, "So what's up with the word Caution on your forehead?"

He said, "Well, I wanted to give everyone to be aware that I have focus, you know? Just that I've got a new gig going on."

He looked over my shoulder then moved closer asking,

"You haven’t seen Cobra Snake around, have you?"

When you're walking around the medina of a Moroccan city, you realise how much you're missing, being on the outside. For all the activity of the markets and squares, you realise that life is mostly lived in private. Windows rarely open onto streets; they turn inwards. Everything is hidden, tucked away behind large wooden doors that might open up onto the plainest, or most astonishing house inside. There's almost no way of telling, until someone opens the door and invites you in.

Inside, in the courtyard of a riad, there's a calm, quiet peace and light you'd not have expected when you were squeezing your way through the madness of mopeds and mules in the souks.

Part two of my reflections series

Very much enjoyed creating this concept. It was quite the challenge for me, I had the idea several days ago, tried a shoot but didn't like it much when I downloaded to my computer. Did another shoot two days later. Had some usable images at last. A couple hours of Photoshop and finally something I liked. I hope everyone enjoys! I did, my bathroom is a little worse for wear however...

Inspired in part by soccersnyderi's recent opening castle... an opening inn! This was really a lot of fun to build, especially the yellow roof. It fits together very nicely and is remarkably sturdy - for me. ;P

My first time trying out a roof like this, also I think my first time using this sort of mottled technique for the walls.
