A troupe of capoeira dancers take advantage of a car-free road in Mumbai.

Jalebi Ink's young reporters were out there doing a news story on Mumbai's first car-free day on February 21, 2010. (Jalebi Ink is a Mumbai-based media house that produces stories, features, news, video, etc for and by young people. ) A long stretch of road in the western suburbs had been cordoned off, and no cars were allowed on that road from morning till night. People used that road freely -- children were cycling around without worrying about cars edging them off the road, some were playing games like hopscotch on the road, some were singing and dancing. A cyclothon was also held that day - about 4000 people participated.

Here are some startling facts that Jalebi Ink reporters dug out for their report. There are over 22 lakh private vehicles in Mumbai, 8000 buses, 55000 taxis. 550 new cars are registered every day in the city!

My office was clean until I decided to pull out a bunch of ink bottles to sell. Here's some of the mess. Not creative, but I didn't have much in me due to yesterday's fail.

I got this idea from Andy Ilanchinski's Tao of Photography blog post Swirls, Whorls and Tendrils. This is a great rainy day activity; all you need is some India Ink, an eye dropper, a clear glass container, like a shallow vase and a light board to illuminate the vase from below.
