Pen drawing of a fantasy figure that seems to repeat itself in my work Just like our lives sometimes we feel like a catepillar and sometimes we emerge into a butterfly. It all begins with our thoughts about ourselves and who we are and the deeds we do to help humanity.

"You're a cool little one

My dark southern breeze

Sweeps through my fingers

And it amazes me

Dixie shadowland

Your envy shelters me

Lay down your burden

Mystery of ebony

And it amazes me

Oh it amazes me

Maybe the heat babe could be this tune

It amazes me

It amazes me

What drives me crazy is that big fat yellow moon

Look up that pale light

Well she's waking the trees

I'm drifting in your hoodoo

And it amazes me

That magnolia state

Got a hold on me

I got no blues to preach

Just Mississippi company

Ain't no magic potion

No gri-gri on her side

She's bound to my salvation

Sweet little mama

Take me down by the river tonight

And it amazes me..."

Inspiration: Islay, Scotland

Result: Day 16

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Sakura Micron 005 & Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils in a Stillman & Birn Zeta series sketchbook

Location: Hotel in Bowmore on Islay, Scotland

Note: love learning about scotch ...in Scotland.

Training myself to draw has been an interesting exercise. I studied the workds of Nicolas de Crecy, the Rat Rod artists, Stephan Marjoram, R.Crumb, O.Wilson and many others. While I certainly will never develop the kind of talent they had, this has been a good way to "kill time" during the various periods of lockdown here in France during the Covid Pandemic.

I could try to live through this day only

Not deal with all life's problems

Note: ... the scanner really hiccuped on this one...the colours are very subtle. THIS image is about us getting used to driving on the other side of the road again...traumatic like usual. Much writing to be added below the illustration...

"I'm a honky tonk man and I can't seem to stop

Love to give the girls a whirl to the music of an old jukebox

When my money's all gone I'm on the telephone

Singin' hey hey mama can your daddy come home..."

Note: The temperature has done a real turn around from Monday, so off goes the A/C and on goes the furnace. Frost tonight. Just brrr. So it’s perfect timing to be inspired by this Harajuku regular, Chipa & her wonderful blue/green hair. Blue cat’s are on my brain this week :3

...also, I wanted to work on creating depth with the scarf/hair. ;)

"And she's a habit I can't handle

For a reason I can't say

I'm in love with a wild white lady

She's as sweet as the stories say

White powder white lady

You're one and the same

Come on down to my house won't you

And hit this boy again!"

Note: This summer I will be packing up my sketchbook & drawing things for a 3 week trip. Tickets are booked & the serious planning is underway. Dublin will be just a 36 hour pub crawl..I mean layover, sandwiched between Spain & Scotland. The latter I've been wanting to explore more of ( Islay) and Barcelona is on my bucket list. Good times are on the to do list :D

Result: Binary Coiffure

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Platinum Carbon Fountain Pen, Faber-Castell Watercolour pencils in a Stillman & Birn Alpha series sketchbook ( 21.6 cm 27.9 cm / 8 1/2" x 11")

Location: Home

Note: I had to use the camera to take a picture of this because idiot me got caught up in the ones and zeroes, drawing right to the edge of the binding so scanning it became problematic....and yeah....that is a lot of 1s & 0s *face palm*...I have no idea what possesses me. *>.<!

ANYway the Stillman & Birn sketchbook continues to be awesome. The Faber-Castell watercolour pencils I scrounged up are not surprisingly brilliant and everything works well with my ink so I'm just all kinds of happy :D

Inspiration: Thinking of the ghastly Edward Gorey alphabet book...

Result: A is for Anna who walked through the wood.

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Platinum Carbon Fountain Pen in a Stillman & Birn Epsilon series sketchbook ( 21.6 cm 27.9 cm / 8 1/2" x 11")

Location: Home while invaded by extended family. Cue the chaos!

Note: I sat down today to write up my own version of the Gashlycrumb Tinies, but involving untimely deaths that might befall mice. Studying Edward Gorey's drawings is a tremendously good way for me to learn & practice designing full scenes in ink. While his light touch of macabre is inspiring, the only one bearing any resemblance to the book is X ...all others are flights of grim fancy brought to you directly from the bleak depths of my own imagination. It's nice to have a plan B to fall back on if I can't come up with anything else to draw. I call it 26 Demice.
