THE LION OF MUGELLO

Gastone Nencini (1930 -1980) was an Italian cyclist with a professional career from 1953 to 1965.

Nencini won the final victory in both the Tour de France 1960 and the Giro d'Italia 1957. As a very good climber and descender, he also won the mountain classification in both cycling races. In the Tour of Italy he won a total of seven stage victories and in the Tour de France he was successful in a stage four times.

He was nicknamed "The Lion of Mugello", after his birthplace. Nencini, who was a chain smoker, was also an amateur painter.

Had time to draw my weeping angel for a topper on my Dr. Who Christmas tree, since we had no power all day.

Ink on Stillman & Birn Zeta paper. I am very happy how this paper holds it's shape.:)

I'll share a photo of the finished tree ASAP.

If It Wasn't For Bad

Music & lyrics by Leon Russell & Elton John 2010

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I knew from the first night I met you

Something just wasn't quite right

Looked like an innocent stranger

But something was just out of sight

How could I know that you would use me

Fill out some plan of your own

I couldn't know you'd abuse me

Leave me here hurt and alone

If it wasn't for you I'd be happy

If it wasn't for lies you'd be true

I know you could be just like you should

If it wasn't for bad you'd be good

I only saw what I wanted to see

You were a dream in my mind

I didn't know how you really could be

It didn't take long for me to find

I guess that it's my fault for seeing

Only what I wanted to see

I couldn't know you would be

A player just acting for me

....yup. REALLY like these two shades together....

De Atramentis ~ Pigeon Blue on Stillman & Birn Zeta paper

....really like this teal. It has that nice grey undertone so it isn't screaming at you off the page. Very classy colour.

Playing around with Sailor, Pentel and a couple other pens during some down time in work. This goes along with an old drawing I did decades ago which I pulled from storage. The old drawing was inspired by the song by The Cramps. The logo is new and will probably go with the drawing once I ink it in.

Now go back at look at the eyes of Christ in Durer's drawing.

SLEEPING WITH THE PAST

Amazes Me

Music & lyrics by Elton John & Bernie Taupin 1989

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You're a cool little one

My dark southern breeze

Sweeps through my fingers

And it amazes me

Dixie shadowland

Your envy shelters me

Lay down your burden

Mystery of ebony

And it amazes me

Oh it amazes me

Maybe the heat babe could be this tune

It amazes me

It amazes me

What drives me crazy is that big fat yellow moon

Look up that pale light

Well she's waking the trees

I'm drifting in your hoodoo

And it amazes me

That magnolia state

Got a hold on me

I got no blues to preach

Just Mississippi company

Ain't no magic potion

No gri-gri on her side

She's bound to my salvation

Sweet little mama

Take me down by the river tonight

And it amazes me

Cezar Chavez from Delano California worked for the equal rights and dignity of the farm workers. Cezar worked in the fields being sprayed with pestcides and no rights or protections for the individual. He was a hero for the immigrant and American citizens who worked in the fields. He wanted justice and protection for those who pick our food.,

Magic Mirror

Music & lyrics by Leon Russell 1976

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm standing by the highway

Suitcase by my side

There's no place I want to go

I just thought I'd catch a ride

Many people look my way

And many pass me by

In moments of reflection

I wonder why

To the thieves I am a bandit

The mothers think I'm a son

To the preachers I'm a sinner

Lord I'm not the only one

To the sad ones I'm unhappy

To the losers I'm a fool

To the students I'm a teacher

With the teachers I'm in school

To the hobos I'm imprisoned by everything I own

To the soldier I'm just someone else who's dying to go home

The general sees a number, a politician's tool

To my friends I'm just an equal in this whirlpool

Magic mirror won't you tell me please

Do I find myself in anyone I see?

Magic mirror if we only could

Try to see ourselves as others would

To policeman I'm suspicious it's in the way I look

I'm just another character to fingerprint and book

To the censors I'm pornography with no redeeming grace

To hooker I'm a customer without a face

The sellers think I'm merchandise, they'll help me for a song

The left ones think I'm right,

The right ones think I'm wrong

And many people look my way

And many pass me by

And in my quiet reflection I wonder why

Magic mirror won't you tell me please

Do I see myself in anyone I meet?

Magic mirror if we only could

Try to see ourselves as others would

Note: ...like I said, Guinness. Also....I was reading Pádraig Ó Tuama's collections of poems, Sorry for your Troubles. The book is breathtakingly moving and beautiful. I HIGHLY recommend this volume.

I can close the sketchbook on my 4th Inktober. Whew. By day seven I found myself edging toward a cartoonish style, and had to haul out the fountain pen inks & a brush to accompany the dip nib; instead of just Platinum Carbon Black. My goal for the month was to work on drawing cats in different positions. ...and that is exactly what I did. :)

I'm not sure when it occurred to me. Maybe it was criticism that a working artist passed my way. I set the pens down for a month while we were in Nice and let things "sit."

The Muse visited and I started thinking of some really goofy ideas. I said to myself "stuff 'um! I'm doing something silly and I'm doing it for myself."

To explain what these were I did a title page to each drawing. As if it really explained anything, that is.

I first shared these with friends in England during our weekly Zoom calls. We had a "Show and Tell" kind of setup. It was a great way to get beyond the loneliness and to spend time with friends, even if we weren't in person.
