Not a very accurate sketch. I blame having to draw on two pages!

My horizon looked like it was even more stormy than it really was.

Many thanks to the owner of the flat giving me the chance to sketch the city from up here.

This was a recreation of the Woodstock stage 50 years ago.

Through this photo, I wanted to be inside the decision-making — inside the decades of choices the tree had made about where to send each branch, how far, at what angle, toward which light. What I was after wasn't a picture of a tree but a picture of growth as drawing — the way a living thing, given enough time, produces something that looks completely inevitable and completely unrepeatable at the same time. There's a specific quality of winter light on a white sky that flattens everything into pure line and pure silence, and I pushed the contrast until the image stopped being a photograph of something and became the thing itself. I've walked past this tree a hundred times. This was the first time I looked up.

Lamy pen and Noodler's ink.

this is an ink sketch I made of the Rockcliffe Boathouse and Marina on the Ottawa River. Many years ago when I had a small sailboat, I would stop at its convenient gasbar and take in some of the character of this unique place. It has a very nice restaurant patio on the river where you can have a meal while watching the boats go by. This boathouse dates from around 1918 when Jean Seguin, a ferryboat owner, built it. In 1992 it was destroyed by arson and the new owners rebuilt it. An article in the Ottawa Citizen recounts some of its history and a recent dispute between new owners and the NCC. I certainly hope that this landmark continues to operate on the river.

Some lads came up for a look. I asked if they wanted to pose on the steps for me, then I would have more time to draw. Unfortunately they had to catch a train so I had to try and quickly draw the people walking up the steps. The blob on the bottom left was a human.

Patterson Creek is a smallish canal which branches into the much larger Rideau Canal system in downtown Ottawa. A lovely community park surrounds it with several mature willow trees, footpaths and lawns. I've made a few paintings and drawings of this area in the past. It's quite idyllic. There's an old brick building next to the canal which for decades, I believe, was used as a sort of maintenance depot. Its a very unique sort of structure. In recent years, its been converted into a café much to the pleasure of people interested in enjoying this area. I stopped for a there for a luncheon this summer and began a quick sketch which I've finally completed in ink.

Many thanks to Herr Müller for letting me draw from the 12th floor.

For the second time this week, I found myself with some idle time on my hands - this time it was to have my winter tires installed on my car. Like the last time, I decided to sketch my surroundings ... but they were even less inspiring. So I magically attempted to change a banality into an artform! I don't know if I succeeded but once again it was fun.

There were lots of skiers coming and going. Many appologised or asked if they could beforehand! The glove owner came out again to take them with him, just after I finished drawing them.
