Recently, my wife and I had the pleasure of visiting Britain. The weather was lovely and flowers were in bloom which was in stark contrast to the wicked winter that we've had this year in Ottawa-Gatineau. We took in a number of the normal tourist sites, but enjoyed just slowly walking in the different neighbourhoods of London. It was very different from the urban environment that we see back home. I made this sketch of a small street in Westminster that we walked along one evening. The rooflines impressed us with the steep roofs and tall chimneys. We could well imagine a Peter Pan or Mary Poppins in this neighbourhood.

Drawn to the sound on one side of men shouting to footy on the telly in a cafe next to me and also traffic crawling in a jam.
This used to be a normal office block. After the new tennants moved in, there has been incredible security around the building. I kept asking passers by who the new tennants were until someone knew.
This is about a third of the waterfall. I had to sketch using my rucksack as a screen against the spray.
We’re walking around the sketching scenes and streets of Oststadt in Karlsruhe next Wednesday from 6pm starting at the Cemetery Info Center, if anyone wants to join us:
Security guards came up to me to look at my sketch. I joked whether I have to move on if the sketch was rubbish. They really were checking me out and making sure I wasn’t sketching their building!
Yet another shop front sketch. Surprisingly drawn to the sound of 90s classic House. One local came up and said he likes pen and ink sketches but if he tried it himself he’d make a pig’s ear of it.
I tried a couple of times to lure the crows with food to be able to sketch them close at hand but it never worked. They few down to eat only after I’d given up and gone. I sketched these as someone else fed them.
After a recent visit this spring to Chanticleer Gardens near Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), I created this ink drawing of my wife as she was walking along an elevated walkway. This was our second visit to this garden which is absolutely enchanting. The skill they demonstrate in growing a wide variety of flowers, shrubs and trees is only equaled to the artistry in which they present them. The garden has numerous sites to explore - like the ruins, the pond, the teacup house and main house, the elevated walkway, the creek and asian woods. You can easily and enjoyably loose yourself there for a day!
Drawn to the sound of gulls and fancy cars driving past.
A local had a look at the sketch and said he couldn't draw but had to when studying botany, but plants are harder to notice when they're wrong compared to buildings. He said I have to draw the porch on this house. I told him I didn't intend to but I did in the end, he was right, it looks better for it.
Its quite a thrill to dig up pieces of pottery that date back 6000 years. This is what a group of volunteers under the direction of archaeologist, Ian Badgley, are doing now along the shoreline of the Ottawa River in the Leamy Lake Park. The dig has been organized during the month of August for several years now. Its slow work under a hot sun but some of the results have been encouraging.
