Loads of people stopped to pose by the giant desk lamp. They didn’t stop long enough for me.

This is a sketch of the Charron House (aka Maison des auteurs) in the Jacques Cartier Park in Gatineau. I've sketched it before from a different angle but was attracted to do it again while I was cycling past it this week. The house is one of the oldest in the region, having been built between 1826 and 1841. What caught my fancy was the sort of courtyard next to the bike path with a tree in the centre surrounded by the heritage house and floral gardens. The view onto the Ottawa River is excellent. As you can see in the photos below, I used my bike as a easel with my Moleskine sketchbook on the seat. A great way to spend a few moments.

 

Voici un croquis de la maison Charron (aka la maison des auteurs) dans le parc Jacques-Cartier à Gatineau. Je l'avais déjà esquissé sous un angle différent, mais j'avais envie de le refaire alors que je passais devant en faisant du vélo cette semaine. La maison est l'une des plus anciennes de la région. Elle a été construite entre 1826 et 1841. Ce qui m'intéressait le plus était une sorte de cour à côté de la piste cyclable avec un arbre au centre, entouré par la maison du patrimoine et des jardins floraux. La vue sur la rivière des Outaouais est excellente. Comme vous pouvez le voir sur les photos ci-dessous, j'ai utilisé mon vélo comme chevalet avec mon carnet de croquis Moleskine sur le siège.Une excellente façon de passer quelques minutes.

I wanted to show the round white Synus building sandwiched between the angular beige offices. It didn’t quite work out.

I was going to draw a snow scene today but by the time I got round to it, it was almost all melted.

This is a scene that I imagined and drew after reading the Prologue to Lucy Foley’s, The Midnight Feast, which is currently a best-selling mystery novel. My drawing shows a forest under a full moon with woodland creatures moving about. An extract from the Prologue reads as follows:

 

“A fox, browsing in the dead beech leaves for the trail of a rabbit, stops still. Raises its head, ears pricked, paw raised, before turning and fleeing. The owls halt their night-time chorus, lifting as silent pale ghosts from the branches to find another patch of woodland. A small herd of deer scatters more noisily, crashing through the undergrowth in its haste to get away. Something is moving through the trees now, disturbing the normal night-time harmony. Shadows with form, with substance. Rustling through the leaves, treading upon the woodland floor, snapping twig and bracken.”

 

The author certainly made a strong impression on me by using words to paint a beautiful image.

 

Voici une scène que j’ai imaginée et dessinée après avoir lu le prologue de The Midnight Feast de Lucy Foley, qui est actuellement un roman policier à succès. Mon dessin montre une forêt sous la pleine lune avec des créatures des bois qui se déplacent. Un extrait du prologue se lit comme suit :

 

« Un renard, broutant dans les feuilles mortes des hêtres à la recherche de la trace d’un lapin, s’arrête. Il lève la tête, les oreilles dressées, la patte levée, avant de se retourner et de fuir. Les hiboux interrompent leur chœur nocturne, s’élevant comme des fantômes pâles et silencieux des branches pour trouver un autre coin de forêt. Un petit troupeau de cerfs se disperse plus bruyamment, s’écrasant dans les sous-bois dans sa hâte de s’enfuir. Quelque chose bouge maintenant dans les arbres, perturbant l’harmonie nocturne normale. Des ombres avec forme, avec substance. Un bruissement dans les feuilles, un piétinement sur le sol de la forêt, des brindilles et des fougères craquantes. »

 

L’auteur m’a certainement fait forte impression en utilisant des mots pour peindre une belle image.

I took my first bike ride of the season today and headed towards my favourite spot: Lac Leamy Park. Sadly, the park was subjected to flooding which has once again hit the entire Ottawa River Basin. This is the fourth time in recent years (2017, 2019 and 2023) that the floodwaters have risen so high. While the water levels are beginning to recede, the flooding has already lasted for over a week. Taking in the scene, I began this sketch on my bike. Hopefully in a couple of weeks everything will return to normal.

Aujourd'hui, j'ai fait ma première sortie à vélo de la saison vers mon endroit préféré : le parc du lac Leamy. Malheureusement, le parc a été inondé, comme c'est le cas pour tout le bassin de la rivière des Outaouais. C'est la quatrième fois ces dernières années (2017, 2019 et 2023) que les eaux montent aussi haut. Bien que le niveau de l'eau commence à baisser, l'inondation dure depuis plus d'une semaine. En contemplant le paysage, j'ai commencé ce croquis sur mon vélo. J'espère que d'ici quelques semaines, tout rentrera dans l'ordre.

I was walking all around this neighbourhood looking for a cactus with the same shape as a fire hydrant.

I got the message (Thank you, Ingrid) that this crane was being assembled at the refinery. I had to draw it as part of my series of sketches recording the delivery of coke drums.

 

As I was drawing, security came up to me and said that I needed permission to draw this as I was on site. I had no idea that I had already cycled 1 km into the refinery and I was still sat outside the gate leading to the core of the site. I wasn’t allowed to photograph anything and was given the OK to draw. I think my sketches are too inaccurate to warrant a security risk!

 

Security told me that this crane was delivered on 261 trucks! The huge red crane on the right was used to assemble the bigger crane on the left. It’s hard to judge the scale of this thing. The pale block running across the black refinery tower about halfway up; this is a single storey. I’m guessing that the crane is a couple of hundred metres tall.

 

This was hard to draw, not only that the refinery is a jumble of pipes and beams, there was scaffolding that completely covered the tower. And it was bloody cold. Security offered that I warm up in the reception
