Texas History

On this day in 1874 Susanna O'Docharty, pioneer woman and community leader, asked a priest to prepare her for death. Although she was ill, the padre saw no signs of death. "This is why I sent for you, I die tonight," she told him curtly, which she did. The Indiana native, born in 1804, moved with her husband to Texas sometime before 1831 to join the McMullen-McGloin colony, where they helped establish the town of San Patricio. Susanna helped establish a meeting between the people of Matamoros and the San Patricio colonists in 1832 at Banquete Creek. This grew into an annual festive occasion called El Lugar del Banquete. Mrs. O'Docharty became a leader of a group of San Patricio residents loyal to the Centralist Mexican government and influenced several other families to move with her family to Matamoros, where they lived until 1845, when Gen. Zachary Taylor's army brought a semblance of law and order back to the old city of San Patricio. Upon her family's return, she returned to her role of community leader and began teaching in her home when the community school closed. She gave her two sons a basic law background that enabled them to become respected lawyers and judges in San Patricio and Nueces counties. Tales of her strong character still exist, including that of how she retrieved her infant daughter's remains from Mexico. About a year after returning to Texas, she enlisted the aid of twelve-year-old Hubert Timon, and the two disappeared early one morning riding south. Two weeks later they reappeared with Susanna balancing a small coffin on her saddle horn.

This keepsake is proof that I have, for good or bad, influenced my Daughter and Granddaughter in the subject of genres of reading, movies, tv and music.

The 3 of us went to the production of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War Of The Worlds at the M&S Bank Arenal Liverpool in April of 2022.

This was my 4th viewing of this amazing show.

This keepsake is the ticket / lanyard pass for the showing. The complete pass is 90 mms high and 50 mms wide, the image has been cropped to comply with Group Rules.

Happy Macro Monday folks !!

You can see the temple at the edge of the cliff. People are not allowed to enter the temple. It is beautiful to visit this place on sunset time.

This Balinese Hindu sea temple is built in 11th century and is one of nine directional temples meant to protect Bali from evil spirits. 'Ulu' means the ‘top’ or the ‘tip’ and 'watu' means a ‘stone’ or a ‘rock’ in Balinese. There are a lot of monkeys at the temple compound and they are believed to guard the temple from bad influences. For the visitors they are dangerous as they may snatch their belongings. The temple is popular for its unique position and offers a wonderful vantage point to view a spectacular sunset.

Favorite-Flavored Fable

My serpentine mind winds curving lines

Circuitous routes on the continuum of time

Aluminum signs control the flow by design

They unite and align, fast-forward and rewind

So I pause in the story in the gore and the glory

And I stop in the traffic through the noise and the static

Ecstatic just to have it, erratic though it seems

My dreams are less fantastic than reality can be

So look at me, baring flesh and hiding soul

An alchemist, turning hunger into gold

Bold as the thunder under auspices of light

Blessings bestowed abundant, a charmed sort of life

It's like it's luck on my karmic credit card

A good deed gone unpunished, my ransom and reward

I'm the stone to your sword, the Goliath to your David

Your favorite-flavored fable, to satisfy and savor

A chic-shabby heroine or a damsel in distress

Star cross'd lovers, Montagues and Capulets

Poison and daggers in iambic pentameter

Bragging borrowed wisdom, listen, voice of an amateur

The diameter of my sphere of influence grows

With each white lie that I've told, every promise turned hollow

And oaths before God just because I was scared

Unprepared to go where lack of care child-bared

But still she's here with me now, how I long for her embrace

Soon enough my child, with God's given grace

Thy will be done.

Tétouan is famed for its fine craftsmanship and musical delicacy and has been part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the area of Crafts and Folk Art since 2017. Its cultural heritage is the product of the interaction between different cultural influences throughout centuries. It is mainly characterized by its Andalusian style and way of living but both Berber, Jewish and Colonial Spanish influences are present too.

The streets are fairly wide and straight, and many of the houses belonging to aristocratic families, descendants of those expelled from Al-Andalus by the Spanish Reconquista, possess marble fountains and have groves planted with orange trees. Within the houses and riads the ceilings are often exquisitely carved and painted in Hispano-Moresque designs, such as are found in the Alhambra of Granada, and the tile-work for which Tetuan is known may be seen on floors, pillars and dados. The city has seven gates which were closed at night up until early 20th century. Many Sufi Zawiyas are scattered inside the walled old city.

A view of the Ceremonial Hall which is still sometimes used for state ceremonies.

The National Memorial complex was originally constructed in the 1920s/30s to honour World War I Czechoslovak legionaries. After 1948, it was used to promote the Communist regime and altered by them. Between 1953 and 1962 it housed the embalmed body of communist Czechoslovakia's first communist president, Klement Gottwald. The building is now part of the National Museum and is an interesting place to visit. There are also great views from the top of the building.

This part of the building is more in keeping with the original 1920s/30s design whereas the other parts of the building show the influence of the communists in the 1950s.

Trey RatcliffThere is a funny new ad campaign in New Zealand about taking photos "Under the Social Influence," warning people not to take photos of themselves with their arms outstretched on a mountaintop... It's pretty funny and I wrote about the same thing in my last book. Personally, I choose not to do it, but I did take this photo of some Influencers that all took turns taking the same photo over and over again... I thought about going back to all my previous landscape photos and photoshop myself in with this same pose... but I only thought about it for 10 seconds. This photo was taken on top of Walter Peak over Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown.

A couple of ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) shots this morning. Just trying to make the ordinary that little bit different. I have better examples to come but just thought I'd put these out there just now LOL

The first month of 2025 has been an essay in how cold we can get! Although we are on the same latitude as Moscow, we do have the warming influence of an ocean around Scotland's shores. So we probably shouldn't complain, but of course we do 😊

-16c was the lowest we managed - and snow a foot deep. So we were quite home-centred, and shooting, even in the garden, was quite an adventure. After keeping ourselves warm, we spent a lot of time trying to ensure our garden birds survived too. Icy weather for a few days is not too bad - but when it extends to 2 or 3 weeks, they were suffering. Both water and food froze solid so quickly!

So there are a lot of white images in the monthly collage! I used one snow bokeh image as the background for the collage. Happily the group challenges gave me inspiration for indoor and tabletop still life shots, as we felt the memories of 'lockdown' returning 😊

February is beginning with the same sub-zero world, though much of the snow has gone. But we are looking forward to a very early and very warm Spring! Well - we can dream!

As ever - many thanks to everyone who has visited my photostream and for the comments and faves.

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT

by swpoetry

You need to stay. And you need to stay loudly. You're afraid of making bad choices but the truth is this:

the tiniest actions will influence the course of the rest of your life and you cannot control it. So many factors play a part in you being here today: a delayed train, an extra cup of tea, the number of seconds your parents took to cross the street. This is chaos theory. Sensitivity. Mathematics. You are here. And every choice you have ever made has led you to right now, reading this. While you exist, every movement and moment matters; those bad choices led you to the best days of your life, if you were to play it all in rewind. Change will come, even if you're standing still. Butterflies will keep flapping their wings and causing hurricanes. So, make your choices and make them loud. Trust your gut. Trust energy. And if you ceased to exist? Oh, the universe would notice. The mess that would make. The hearts that would break. So just stay. Stay for bad choices. Stay for great ones. Stay.

Cause a few hurricanes.

Roger d'Astous studied at Taliesin during the Usonian period of Wright's career. He went on to build many houses, churches, and commercial buildings in Canada, mostly in Quebec. Nicole: (returns alone, bemused) I guess I was overreacting.

Sean: Why do you say that?

Nicole: The page is a pretty standard influencer page. Pretty girl promising to make every girl pretty. I admit, she's had some amazing successes, which is all the girls talk about, but there were some failures, too.

Sean: Failures?

Nicole: You know, where the tips either aren't followed just right, or the girl didn't have the bone structure to make it work. They're good cosmetic tips, but they're not going to work for everyone. I made sure the girls should be realistic, but they insist the ones it doesn't work for didn't do it at the right time.

Sean: The "right time?"

Nicole: (nods) You're supposed to start your transformation at exactly 21:10.

Sean: (snorts) Since when do you use military time?

Nicole: (smiles) Since talking to Liz, and it's what the channel, or whatever, uses, too.

Sean: Pete's a bad influence. He called back.

Nicole: And?

Sean: And he said everything was fine. He said the girls got carried away with the whole transformation thing, but that things were just fine. Then he hung up because the girls were demanding dessert.

Nicole: (smiles ruefully, shaking her head) And I make fun of conspiracy theorists.

Sean: (glances at his phone) Well, we've got a couple hours before nine. Want to watch a movie?

Nicole: Works for me. There's a quirky murder mystery I've been waiting to watch with you. It takes place in the White House, and it's called, "Apples And Orange Juice." (as she's scrolling to the app, the newscaster is talking about unusual disappearances on the East Coast) Here it is! You want popcorn?

Sean: I'm good, for now.

Just right from the fountain in the background behind the trees you see the steeple of the Cathedral, more to the centre the spire of the Hausmann Tower of the Residential Palace and at the right edge the Rampart Pavilion of the Zwinger.

The Zwinger is a building complex with gardens in Dresden. Its name that means 'bailey' derives from what had stood before in this place on the ramparts of the city. Built under the direction of the architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and the sculptor Balthasar Permoser, the Gesamtkunstwerk of architecture, sculpture and painting is one of the most important buildings of the baroque period and, along with Our Lady's Church, is the most famous architectural monument in Dresden. Its name Zwinger comes from the term used in the Middle Ages for a part of the fortress between the outer and inner fortification walls, although the Zwinger no longer fulfilled a function corresponding to its name when construction began.

The Zwinger was built from 1709 onwards as an orangery and garden and as a representative festival area. Its richly decorated pavilions and the galleries lined with balustrades, figures and vases bear witness to the splendour of the reign of Elector Frederick August I (also known as "August the Strong") and his claim to power. In the elector's original concept, the Zwinger was intended as the forecourt of a new palace, which was to occupy the square up to the Elbe; for this reason, the Zwinger remained undeveloped towards the Elbe side for the time being (provisionally closed off with a wall). The plans for a new palace were abandoned after the death of Augustus the Strong, and with the turning away from the Baroque, the Zwinger initially lost its importance. It was not until over a century later that the architect Gottfried Semper completed it with the Semper Gallery facing the Elbe.

Opened in 1855, the Semper Gallery was one of the most important German museum projects of the 19th century and enabled the extension of the use of the Zwinger as a museum complex, which had grown under the influence of the respective periods since the 18th century. The air raids on Dresden on 13 and 14 February 1945 hit the Zwinger hard and caused extensive destruction. Since its reconstruction in the 1950s and 1960s, the Zwinger has housed the Old Masters Picture Gallery, the Mathematical-Physical Salon and the Porcelain Collection. Although the original purpose of the Zwinger as an orangery, garden and representative festival area has been relegated to the background, the latter is still maintained with the performance of musical and theatre events.

Inside the huge 57 metre convex concrete column that symbolises the growth of the Afrikaans language and which dominates the Afrikaans Language Monument near Paarl.

The Afrikaans Language Monument (Afrikaans: Afrikaanse Taalmonument) is located on a hill overlooking Paarl, Western Cape Province, South Africa. Officially opened on 10 October 1975, it commemorates the semicentenary of Afrikaans being declared an official language of South Africa separate from Dutch. Also, it was erected on the 100th anniversary of the founding of Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners (the Society of Real Afrikaners) in Paarl, the organisation that helped strengthen Afrikaners' identity and pride in their language.

The monument, surprisingly post-modern for the product of an authoritarian right-wing state, consists of various tapering structures of a convex and concave nature, symbolising the influences of different languages and cultures on Afrikaans itself, as well as political developments in South Africa, as follows:

* three columns symbolise the European heritage of the language. The columns are from high to low to illustrate Europe’s diminishing influence on Afrikaans.

* three convex mounds on a podium symbolise the African influences on the language

* a wall on the stairway symbolises the influence of the Malay language and culture, placed between the curves of Western Europe and Africa as a separate entity. Yet it forms a unity with the two forces of Western Europe and Africa that merge to form the bridge that symbolically depicts the roots of Afrikaans.

* the highest column (about 57m high) symbolises the growth of Afrikaans and is open at the top. The other writer that inspired the architect, CJ Langenhoven, wrote that Afrikaans grows like a “fast-rising arch”; the second very high column represents South Africa and the declaration of the Republic of South Africa in 1960.

There is also an open stadium at the bottom of the structure where concerts and events are held.
