What happens to Robins in the winter?

In the winter, they become nomadic, searching widely for their favorite cold-weather fare. Weather also influences robin movements. A heavy snowfall that persists for more than a few days may send them on their way, searching for better conditions. Robins also form flocks in the winter.

Can Robins survive snow?

Even in freezing temperatures, robins can stay warm enough to make staying through the winter worthwhile. ... If you want to observe robins in winter, try putting out water for them. They can survive on their own by eating snow, but birds always welcome a source of unfrozen water for drinking and bathing.

What do Robins eat when there is snow on the ground?

There isn't much one can feed robins in the winter. They're very adept at finding their preferred food and rarely visit feeding stations. During severe weather, robins may eat raisins, berries, or pieces of apples placed on the ground.

Do robins sing all day?

We know that robins are one of the first species to begin singing every morning. ... They sing the most early in the morning and at evening twilight after sunset. They sing the least around noon. We thought we could figure out approximately how many songs they sing each hour through the day, and add these up.

What is the sound of a robin singing?

It's a string of 10 or so clear whistles assembled from a few often-repeated syllables, and often described as cheerily, cheer up, cheer up, cheerily, cheer up. The syllables rise and fall in pitch but are delivered at a steady rhythm, with a pause before the bird begins singing again. At dawn, the song is more rapid.

Why do robins sing in winter?

The sound of a robin chirping in winter is a good sign, say scientists. It means the bird has built up enough fat reserves to survive the cold nights and has enough energy left to defend its territory. The bird traditionally sings in spring to attract a mate but in winter, when food is short, it faces a dilemma.

I have been writing a book about humorous tales of cycling around Kent and the many beautiful wild orchids seen on the way. Disappointingly my publisher has been influencing and shaping my writing towards a book concentrating about male obsessions. We have parted company but this has left me with a script that I no longer recognise and as I read my words leaves a sour taste. This will never do and is preventing me produce the light hearted, hopefully entertaining piece I wanted it to be. So today, I pressed the big delete button on my keyboard and away it went! I now have some time to sit and regather my thoughts, regroup and to start again from scratch. Autumn evenings and winter nights are not far away and due to house clearing and redecorating our office/library is back up and running, a lovely, quiet room to work. So, with invigorated interest its eye's down and the "funny gland" excreting on full flow, its time to start again!

"Baby, you can

Ride it, ooh yeah

Bring it over to my place

And you be like, "Baby, who cares?"

But I know you care

Bring it over to my place"

The Cloisters is one of our favorite museums. The minute you arrive at the train station you feel you are entering the 19th century. Itâs a short walk over and the surroundings are just lovely.

The Sand Island Lighthouse (also known as the Sand Island Light) is located approximately three miles south from Mobile Point. Originally located on a low lying island of 400 acres, the light stands surrounded by water and massive stones placed to halt the erosion of the island. The tower, which is influenced by the Italianate style, is a 132 foot conical masonry structure which tapers from a width of 40 feet at the base to 17 or 18 feet at the top. It rests on a foundation consisting of double course of sill timbers resting on one hundred seventy-one piles overlaid with 12 feet of concrete. Constructed in 1875, Sand Island Lighthouse is the older of the two remaining lighthouses in the state and is the third to have been erected on this location. A light at Sand Island has marked the entrance to Mobile Bay & the Mobile Ship Channel since 1838. This was the second navigational aid erected for the entrance to the port of Mobile, a light having been established at Mobile Point in 1822. The Frensel lens which has been removed was constructed by Barier and Fenestri in Paris in 1871. Since the construction of the tower several different systems were used for lighting. Originally lard oil lamps were used but were replaced in 1833 by mineral oil lamps. In 1912 an incandescent oilvapor lamp of 17,000 candlepower visible 18 miles at sea was installed and later replaced in 1947 by four nine inch 1000 watt bulbs when the light was automated in 1947. In 1966, the 60,000 candle power beam was dimmed to 8,000 when the new Mobile Point Light took over. The light was finally extinguished and the structure abandoned in 1971. The lens was removed at this time and moved to the nearby Fort Morgan Museum. In 1973, the keepers house was burned. The island were the Sand Island Lighthouse was built, originally 400 acres, had been eroding since the construction and by 1873 was reduced to less than 100 acres. The erosion continued at a rapid pace until between 1873 & 1902 the keepers dwelling was twice removed to more stable ground and several thousand tons of rock were placed around the island & tower. More recently, restoration efforts resulted primarily in stabilization of the island through 2008 and in December 2011 construction of a new island was completed with 1,400,000 yards of sand being dredged from the sea floor and deposited around the lighthouse creating a 2,600 feet by 500 feet, or approximately 15 acres island. Less than a year later the $6,000,000 restoration of the island was washed away by Hurricane Isaac.

A market town in the medieval period, Birmingham grew in the 18th century Midlands Enlightenment and subsequent Industrial Revolution, which saw advances in science, technology, and economic development, producing a series of innovations that laid many of the foundations of modern industrial society. By 1791 it was being hailed as "the first manufacturing town in the world".Birmingham's distinctive economic profile, with thousands of small workshops practising a wide variety of specialised and highly skilled trades, encouraged exceptional levels of creativity and innovation and provided an economic base for prosperity that was to last into the final quarter of the 20th century. The Watt steam engine was invented in Birmingham.

The resulting high level of social mobility also fostered a culture of political radicalism which, under leaders from Thomas Attwood to Joseph Chamberlain, was to give it a political influence unparalleled in Britain outside London, and a pivotal role in the development of British democracy. From the summer of 1940 to the spring of 1943, Birmingham was bombed heavily by the German Luftwaffe in what is known as the Birmingham Blitz. The damage done to the city's infrastructure, in addition to a deliberate policy of demolition and new building by planners, led to extensive urban regeneration in subsequent decades.

Birmingham's economy is now dominated by the service sector. The city is a major international commercial centre, ranked as a gamma+ world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network; and an important transport, retail, events and conference hub. Its metropolitan economy is the second largest in the United Kingdom with a GDP of $121.1bn (2014), and its six universities make it the largest centre of higher education in the country outside London. Birmingham's major cultural institutions – the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, the Library of Birmingham and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts – enjoy international reputations, and the city has vibrant and influential grassroots art, music, literary and culinary scenes. Birmingham is the fourth-most visited city in the UK by foreign visitors.

Birmingham's two professional football clubs are Aston Villa and Birmingham City, the former having achieved the most success by winning seven league titles and one European Cup. Birmingham has been selected to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

People from Birmingham are called Brummies, a term derived from the city's nickname of "Brum", which originates from the city's old name, Brummagem, which in turn is thought to have derived from "Bromwich-ham".The Brummie accent and dialect are particularly distinctive.

This peculiar galaxy, beautifully streaked with tendrils of reddish dust, is captured here in wonderful detail by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.

The galaxy is known as NGC 1022, and is officially classified as a barred spiral galaxy. You can just about make out the bar of stars in the centre of the galaxy in this image, with swirling arms emerging from its ends. This bar is much less prominent than in some of the galaxy’s barred cousins and gives the galaxy a rather squat appearance; but the lanes of dust that swirl throughout its disc ensure it is no less beautiful.

Hubble observed this image as part of a study into one of the Universe’s most notorious residents: black holes. These are fundamental components of galaxies, and are thought to lurk at the hearts of many — if not all — spirals. In fact, they may have quite a large influence over their cosmic homes. Studies suggest that the mass of the black hole sitting at a galaxy’s centre is linked with the larger-scale properties of the galaxy itself. However, in order to learn more, we need observational data of a wider and more diverse range of galaxies — something Hubble’s study aims to provide.

(Left to her own devices for the time being, Nicole turns on the TV, checking the onscreen guide for anything interesting to occupy her time. Behind the guide, the news is playing.)

Female Newscaster: The food bank is open until 6 PM for donations

Male Newscaster: In news abroad, 5 more disappearances were reported in the UK. Local authorities believe a common link is the time of the disappearances, around 9 PM. This seems to coincide with other vanishings in several European countries.

(Feeling nostalgic, Nicole chooses a rerun of a sitcom that was popular when she was in high school, getting comfortable on the couch. A large golden tabby with black stripes leaps up, beside her, purring loudly.)

Nicole: Okay, you can sit up here, but you have to be a good boy. (the cat lightly bites her finger, settling atop her legs) I love you, too. (smiles, scratching under his chin)

(Time passes, and Nicole's phone plays the opening notes of "Viva la Vida." She answers.)

Nicole: Hi. (teases) Not still at the office, are you?

Sean: No way. I am about to head for the front door. Just need you to open it, please. Got an armload of Italian.

Nicole: That sounds like something I should be jealous of. (laughs) Be right there. As soon as I get The Cat off my legs.

Sean: See you in a minute. (disconnects)

(Nicole slides The Cat off her legs, and he looks mildly insulted, then she stretches and crosses to the front door, calling down the hall.)

Nicole: Kiley! Dad's home! (she hears a cheer from the girls and smiles, opening the front door and quickly moving to help her husband with the bags of food) How much extra food did you get for Skyler? (jokes, bring the bags to the kitchen table)

A mixture of influences from a several locations up Borrowdale. I’m toying with the idea of cracking out my paints and going old-school with this one.

The seat of the ancient bishopric of Dol, the Saint-Samson cathedral dates to the 13th century and is primarily Gothic in style with both Norman and English influences. It was built on the site of an old church where Nominoë was crowned as the first king of Brittany in 850. This old church was replaced by a Romanesque style cathedral which was in turn destroyed in 1203 by the soldiers of Jean sans Terre and little is left of that building today. From Saint Samson in the 6th century to Monseigneur de Hercé, shot at Vannes in 1795, more than 80 bishops have occupied the bishopric of Dol. Since 1880 the Archbishop of Rennes is the Archbishop of Rennes, Dol and Saint-Malo. The cathedral has retained little of the old furnishings as in 1742 the cathedral chapter decided to get rid of all the old bishop's tombs and relaid the choir paving and in 1793 the rood screen which had separated the choir from the nave was demolished and was replaced by an iron grill on the orders of the zealots of the revolution.

Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti (26 October 1685 – 23 July 1757) was an Italian composer who spent much of his life in the service of the Portuguese and Spanish royal families.

He is classified primarily as a Baroque composer.

Domenico Scarlatti was born in Naples, Kingdom of Naples, in the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach and George Friederic Handel.

This portrait of the voluptuous bouquet of tulips was made under the influence of Scarlatti: SO BAROQUE!!!!
