The three columns represent the influence of Western European languages on the development of Afrikaans. Behind, the glorious scenery of the Simonsberg.
The Afrikaans Language Monument (Afrikaans: Afrikaanse Taalmonument) is located on a hill overlooking Paarl, Western Cape Province, South Africa. Officially opened on 10 October 1975, it commemorates the semicentenary of Afrikaans being declared an official language of South Africa separate from Dutch. Also, it was erected on the 100th anniversary of the founding of Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners (the Society of Real Afrikaners) in Paarl, the organisation that helped strengthen Afrikaners' identity and pride in their language.
The monument, surprisingly post-modern for the product of an authoritarian right-wing state, consists of various tapering structures of a convex and concave nature, symbolising the influences of different languages and cultures on Afrikaans itself, as well as political developments in South Africa, as follows:
* three columns symbolise the European heritage of the language. The columns are from high to low to illustrate Europe’s diminishing influence on Afrikaans.
* three convex mounds on a podium symbolise the African influences on the language
* a wall on the stairway symbolises the influence of the Malay language and culture, placed between the curves of Western Europe and Africa as a separate entity. Yet it forms a unity with the two forces of Western Europe and Africa that merge to form the bridge that symbolically depicts the roots of Afrikaans.
* the highest column (about 57m high) symbolises the growth of Afrikaans and is open at the top. The other writer that inspired the architect, CJ Langenhoven, wrote that Afrikaans grows like a “fast-rising arch”; the second very high column represents South Africa and the declaration of the Republic of South Africa in 1

I was going through some photos from last month, you know the ones, sitting there in a folder, waiting to be looked at and processed when I happened upon this one.
I do not know how I missed it on the first round, because this is a gorgeous portrait.
I'm not sure what it is, the pose, the smile, the composition... whatever it is, I love it and am kicking myself for not seeing it sooner!
She has a classic air about her here, even with the cheese and crackers in her hand. I love it, what a gem to be hidden in a folder!
This was jammed between a bunch of blurry photos, so I think I snapped this when I was showing my cousin's son how to use my camera.
I had bribed him with camera time if he would pose with his baby sister, he held up his end of the bargain so I handed over the camera, forgetting I had everything on manual settings.
He quickly returned and asked for a lesson, so I flipped things to auto and I think this must have been what I shot to show him where the buttons were, I wasn't even thinking about the photo at the time, just teaching him how to use the camera.
Funny how things work out that way sometimes.

Santa Cruz County, AZ - My friend Jules Wyman and I found this beautiful adult Green Ratsnake in a rather indecisive position on a dirt road about an hour before sunset. It was our first snake of the year in Arizona (at least for me!) and a really stunning one at that. It was special to getting out with Jules as he was recovering from a recent injury and was relegated to the car for the most part. This was a difficult shot for me as without a friend and being slightly unprepared I had to balance my camera on my leg as I gently posed the snake while I tried my best to get good focus at such an awkward angle. Keeping the photo session short, I was initially frustrated that I may have failed to get a good photo as for one reason or another I either haven't photographed or poorly photographed this species during other encounters. Luckily the snake and my camera were on my side and I was happy to find this photo when I parsed through the results of my little sunset shoot. I was very happy to have Jules literally rooting for me from the sidelines and being a positive influence, as this marks what I hope to be a fantastic summer full of great photographs and even greater memories!

When a tree grows in the direction of the wind it is called a lazy bush. This one is influenced by prevailing westerly winds.
The Palace Theater (or C. Pflanze building) is a beautifully restored late 19th century building with Italianate influences in downtown Maryville, TN first built by Mr. Charles Pflanze in 1868. Originally utilized as a furniture and casket shop, the building later housed a Five and Dime, a movie theater, and a drug store. It was 'restored' to its current 'Palace Theatre look' in 1934. Today, it offers live concerts, classic movies, special events, and an espresso bar.
In 1983, the Tennessee Historical Commission conducted an architectural survey of Maryville, TN. Representative structures of prevalent building types are included in this collection, such as this classic example, the Palace Theatre.
Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D5200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.

The small country is a major producer and exporter of aloe vera (aloe vera) and is strong in the financial and fishing sectors, in addition to logistical services in the oil sector. It is a small island with a lot of sun and wind all the time, which favors the country's main economic activity, tourism. Its area is 179 km2 (69.1 mi2) and is densely populated by approximately 110,000 inhabitants (2020 Census) and has a per capita income of just over US$25,000 p.a. The country's capital is Oranjestad.

Synopsis
Kei Kitami # who is aiming for a university # meets Kaori Uemura # an event companion who is 6 years older than her on SNS.
Kaori's dream of coming to Tokyo is to become friends with famous artists.
For that purpose # the presence of radio station producer Ryo Osawa was necessary.
Osawa talks to Kaori during the live radio broadcast.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

The Scottish Rite Temple was the precursor of Art Deco in Miami. Ahead of their time, the architects’ avant-garde modernist project was to become the first Art Deco building in Miami.
The building is a rare example of Egyptian influence architecture in Miami. Egyptian features were a global trend at the time after the archaeological discovery of Tutankhamun’s intact tomb in 1922 which sparked a sudden flourish of Egyptomania worldwide. Art Deco is considered to be an eclectic form of elegant and stylish modernism, which has been influenced by a wide range of sources. Among them were the arts of Africa, Ancient Egypt, and Aztec Mexico. Art Deco also drew on mathematics, such as geometry; also
on so-called streamline technology, modern aviation, electric lighting, the radio, ocean liners and the
skyscraper for inspiration.
The Scottish Rite Temple was built to the requirements of the Scottish Rite association, however, it has held different functions throughout the years. Especially during the Depression years, the temple was leased to other companies to help support and maintain it.
The “Federal Theater” leased the property
to show silent movies for a period of time, then “The Miami Playhouse Group” used the temple for live
plays, and it was leased out for church events on weekends, from regular services to wedding
ceremonies. Today, the property is underused and in need of repairs to be able to accommodate other
functions besides the regular Masonic ceremonies.
The principal elevation of the building is characterized by four stylized Doric columns dividing the main
façade into three bays.
The columns extend to a height of two stories and are capped by a stylized entablature bearing the name of the building as an inscription: “Scottish Rite.” There are four stylized
sculptural eagles which surmount the entablature atop the placement of each column axis below.
Behind the eagles is visible a gable end roof. The building’s configuration presents a “T” shape plan with
a projecting lower wing to the northeast. The principal elevation of the wing is characterized by a
colonnade delineated by similar stylized Doric columns and an articulated masonry entablature.
The principal roof of the building is a ziggurat-shape mass that is capped by a stylized cupola. The walls of
the building are clad in smooth stucco.
The building is accessible by way of a set of masonry steps leading from the sidewalk level. The steps
span the width of the main façade and emphasize the Grecian overtones in the styling. The greater
part of the fenestration has been replaced by awning-type windows set in aluminum frames. A masonry
dentil course wraps around the perimeter of the building at the height of the entablature.
The auditorium is undoubtedly the most outstanding interior space. With a seating capacity of 700
persons the auditorium is composed , in addition to the main floor, of two major balconies and two
small balconies. Under the ziggurat roof is a dome from which is suspended a magnificent chandelier;
the four columns that support the dome have large light panels featuring the emblems of the Order.
The stage is large enough to accommodate extensive theatrical productions and is equipped with all
necessary equipment including a complete electrical switchboard to control all of the lighting effects.
The building was badly damaged by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, therefore completely restored at a cost
of $2.7 million. The most impressive restoration work was the fifty hand-painted backdrops decorating
the stage for historic tableaus used in the Rite’s symbolic degree ceremonies. During the restoration an
orchestra pit was discovered under the floor of the auditorium; 700 new seats and a new sound system
were also installed. A Skinner pipe organ adds up to the list of features.
