Liz: (whispers) It's the girls! They're -- I don't know! They sound-- (she breaks off and Nicole hears her friend running across the room, knocking on the door) Tami, Trish? Are you okay?

Nicole: Liz, what's wrong? (Sean rises from the table, crossing to the couch. Nicole shakes her head at him.) Liz?

Liz: It sounds like they're, like they're tearing up the sheets or something. Tami and Trish Baxter, if you're trashing that hotel room I'm going to make your work it off as hotel maids!

Nicole: (to Sean) She says it sounds like the girls are trashing their room.

Kiley: It's okay, Mom. I think they just started their transformation. Florida's three hours ahead, right?

Nicole: (looks at her phone, where the time is changing from 6:10 to 6:11) Liz, Kiley says the transformation started at nine-ten.

Liz: If you could hear them you wouldn't be so calm. Listen.

(There's a scraping sort of noise and Nicole realizes Liz has turned her phone to the door of the room where her girls are staying. Nicole's eyes go wide and she puts the phone on speaker so that Sean can hear the sounds as well. Gasping sounds, cloth ripping, heavy thuds like fists or feet on the floor, pounding as if they were trying to break through the floor.)

Pacific Fiction ...

Faithful to the heritage of conceptual art, fascinated by land art and especially by Robert Smithson, influenced by Olafur Eliasson’s teaching at the Institut für Raumexperimente in Berlin, Julian Charrière sets in motion research processes that give rise to performances, photographic records, films and installations.

His materials, including decaying organic matter, cryogenically frozen plants, sediment and salt bricks reflect particular times and spaces, both as tangible traces of what he calls a ‘geology of history’ and as explorations of humanity’s interdependent relationship with our environment.

Pacific Fiction – Study for Monument is one of a set of works created by Charrière following his exploration of the Marshall Islands and the Bikini atoll, part of his research into former nuclear testing sites as dystopian places par excellence.

The United States test-fired nearly seventy nuclear bombs in the Marshall Islands from 1946 to 1958, including Castle Bravo, the single most powerful H-bomb, which wiped two islands from the map.

Pacific Fiction, a pyramid of coconuts encased in lead, can be read as the model for a future memorial. The coconuts refer to the etymology of the Bikini atoll, which takes its name from the local Melanesian name ‘Pikinni’, ‘pik’ meaning ‘surface’ and ‘ni’ meaning ‘coconut palm’. The lead is used for its physical property of withstanding radiation. While the pile of coconuts echoes a stock of cannon balls, the work’s pyramid shape and its subtitle, Study for Monument, also conjure up images of a tomb, Egyptian pyramids, the architecture of the bunkers on the Bikini atoll shoreline, and the angular iron monoliths that slumber in the depths of the Pacific.

This is a silver gelatin print with elements of chemigram and lumen printing from my project "Traces".

”Traces” is a series that explores the transformation of identity over time. It delves into the fluid nature of "the self," questioning how much of who we are is shaped by our past versus the influence of fate. Through this work, I sought to deconstruct the familiar image we recognize as ourselves and rebuild it through a variety of alternative techniques. I employed methods such as manipulating the negative, experimenting with alternative chemical processes in the darkroom, and incorporating mixed media on the final prints. The portraits, captured on film first and finally printed on paper, reflect a layered process that blends traditional analog techniques with experimental approaches to reimagine the subject’s identity.
