The Northern California Coast includes the San Francisco Bay Area and the vast coastline from the San Francisco Peninsula all the way to California's border with Oregon. Perched on a cliff on the central California coast, 50 miles south of San Francisco, the 115-foot Pigeon Point Lighthouse, one of the tallest lighthouses on the West Coast, has been guiding mariners since 1872. Its five-wick lard oil lamp, and first-order Fresnel (pronounced fra-nel) lens, was first lit at sunset, November 15, 1872. Although the original Fresnel lens is no longer in use, the lighthouse is still an active U.S. Coast Guard aid to navigation using an automated LED (light-emitting diode) beacon.

Macro Monday: #Hobby
A hobby most of us enjoy: listening to music. As Nietzsche already said: "Without music, life would be a mistake." While this is a 45 rpm Beatles single (a very early recording of "Skinny Minnie" / "My Bonnie" with Tony Sheridan, 1962, but published on Polydor as "late" as 1968; the sleeve shows The Beatles very young, all clad in leather like rockers, probably taken in the days when they regularly played at the Cavern Club in Hamburg) which I got when I was a kid (the single, I mean), I thought that this actually looks like the cover of a ca. 1978 LP, the debut of, let's say, the then upcoming and most promising, if not to say hot Punk-Prog Band Poly d'Or: "A Case of the Mondays". An elaborate, most intricate, deeply philosophical (in a Punk-Prog way) concept album / Punk opera about a guy called Sir Bob who wakes up one Monday in a shrinking world, and... Do you really want to know how the story goes on? No, of course not, because you all know it, and experience it every week. Groundhog Monday :-) (And please note, I didn't mean to include the sad story that inspired the real life Sir Bob [Geldof] to write his band's greatest hit; this is all about MMs and fun.)

Nicht bezogen auf ein Hobby, das viele von uns erfreut: Musikhören. Denn das ist ja klar, wie sagte schon Nietzsche: "Ohne Musik wäre das Leben ein Irrtum." Eigentlich ist das eine uralte Polydor-Beatles-Single, wohl aufgenommen im Jahr 1962 (The Beatles with Tony Sheridan) zu Cavern-Club-Zeiten, das Cover zeigt sie dann auch alle seeehr jung, wie Rocker in Leder gekleidet, und zu hören gibt es auf der einen Seite "Skinny Minnie" und auf der anderen "My Bonny". Veröffentlicht wurde das Ganze 1968. Das Foto erinnert mich aber eher an eine LP so ca. von 1978, also fiel mir folgende Geschichte dazu ein: Dies ist das Debüt der damals aufstrebenden Punk-Prog-Band Poly d'Or, "A Case of the Mondays", ein unglaublich vielschichtiges, philosophisches Konzeptalbum, eine Punk-Oper gar, über einen Typen namens Sir Bob, der eines Montags in einer schrumpfenden Welt erwacht und... wollt Ihr wirklich wissen, wie es weitergeht? Natürlich nicht, Ihr wisst es längst, erlebt Ihr es doch jede Woche selbst ;-) (Kleine Anmerkung: Die traurige Geschichte, die den echten Sir Bob [Geldof] damals zum größten Hit seiner Band inspirierte, lassen wir hier mal außen vor, hier geht es um MM und Spaß. Hoffentlich.)

The peregrine's breeding range includes land regions from the Arctic tundra to the tropics. It can be found nearly everywhere on Earth, except extreme polar regions, very high mountains, and most tropical rainforests; the only major ice-free landmass from which it is entirely absent is New Zealand. This makes it the world's most widespread raptor, and one of the most widely found bird species. In fact, the only land-based bird species found over a larger geographic area is not always naturally occurring, but one widely introduced by humans, the rock pigeon, which in turn now supports many peregrine populations as a prey species. The peregrine is a highly successful example of urban wildlife in much of its range, taking advantage of tall buildings as nest sites and an abundance of prey such as pigeons and ducks. Both the English and scientific names of this species mean "wandering falcon," referring to the migratory habits of many northern populations. Experts recognize 17 to 19 subspecies, which vary in appearance and range; disagreement exists over whether the distinctive Barbary falcon is represented by two subspecies of Falco peregrinus, or is a separate species, F. pelegrinoides. The two species' divergence is relatively recent, during the time of the last ice age, therefore the genetic differential between them (and also the difference in their appearance) is relatively tiny. They are only about 0.6–0.8% genetically differentiated.
While its diet consists almost exclusively of medium-sized birds, the peregrine will occasionally hunt small mammals, small reptiles, or even insects. Reaching sexual maturity at one year, it mates for life and nests in a scrape, normally on cliff edges or, in recent times, on tall human-made structures. The peregrine falcon became an endangered species in many areas because of the widespread use of certain pesticides, especially DDT. Since the ban on DDT from the early 1970s, populations have recovered, supported by large-scale protection of nesting places and releases to the wild.
The peregrine falcon is a well respected falconry bird due to its strong hunting ability, high trainability, versatility, and – in recent years – availability via captive breeding. It is effective on most game bird species, from small to large.

I am conscious that you will all get bored if I just post shots of Hull but don’t worry I will still vary my stream with shots of elsewhere and particularly less urban settings. I do feel this year however I will post more shots than usual of my city obviously showing city of culture events but I also want to show some of its interesting buildings and landmarks including its pubs. Anyway I hope you guys will stick with me in 2017 .
Obviously some of the City Of Culture 2017 events do not lend them selves to photography. I live about ten minutes walk from Hull University and this week the first big art Exhibition has opened in the University liberty called “Lines Of Thought” , it’s a great show covering drawing from Michelangelo to the present day. It includes works by Rembrandt, Da Vinci and Durer. The show is on for two months so it means I can regularly take the short walk to the university have a cup of coffee and spend time with some masterpieces.
For my USA contacts the exhibition moves from Hull to Santa Fe and after that to Providence Rhode Island well worth catching if you are in those vicinities

Fritillaria meleagris is a Eurasian species of flowering plant in the lily family Liliaceae.
Its common names include snake's head fritillary, snake's head (the original English name), chess flower, frog-cup, guinea-hen flower, guinea flower, leper lily (because its shape resembled the bell once carried by lepers), Lazarus bell, chequered lily, chequered daffodil, drooping tulip or, in the British Isles, simply fritillary. The plant is native to the flood river plains of Europe where it grows in abundance.
The name Fritillaria comes from the Latin fritillus meaning dice-box, possibly referring to the chequered pattern on the flowers although this derivation has been disputed. The name meleagris means "spotted like a guineafowl". The common name "snake's head" probably refers to the somewhat snakelike appearance of the nodding flower heads, especially when in bud, on their long stems. Vita Sackville-West called it "a sinister little flower, in the mournful colour of decay".
The flower has a chequered pattern in shades of purple, or is sometimes pure white. It flowers from March to May and grows between 15–40 cm (6–16 in) in height. The plant has a button-shaped bulb, about 2 cm in diameter, containing poisonous alkaloids. It grows in grasslands in damp soils and river meadows at altitudes up to 800 m (2,625 ft).
Fritillaria meleagris is native to Europe and western Asia but in many places it is an endangered species that is rarely found in the wild but is commonly grown in gardens. In Croatia, the flower is known as kockavica and is associated by some with the country's national symbol. It is the official flower of the Swedish province of Uppland, where it grows in large quantities every spring in the meadows of Kungsängen (King’s Meadow), just outside Uppsala, which gives the flower its Swedish name, kungsängslilja (king’s meadow lily). It is also found for example in Sandemar Nature Reserve, a nature reserve west of Dalarö in Stockholm Archipelago.
The only species that occurs in the wild in the Netherlands is the wild fritillary flower; in Belgium it is extinct or very rare.
Like many plants in the lily family, F. meleagris is susceptible to the scarlet lily beetle, which can seriously damage or kill it.

I wanted to include a shot in my photostream of the colourful autumn leaves on the ground somewhere, and JJ and I found these on Friday on our way home from my Mum's. Sadly they were too damp to be crunchy!
The first sunny day for what seems to be an age. Unfortunately it coincided with the return to work, so my image came from home before heading to work.

Ruabon Moors are an area of upland moorland in Wales to the west of Ruabon and Wrexham. They lie partly within Wrexham county borough and partly within Denbighshire.
In the northern part of the moors are the areas known as Minera Mountain and Esclusham Mountain. Further south are Ruabon Mountain and Eglwyseg Mountain. In the west the moors reach their greatest height at Cyrn-y-Brain,565 metres (1,854 ft) above sea level.
To the north and north-east, the moors are bounded by Minera Limeworks and the Clywedog valley. In the east they slope down to the villages of Rhosllannerchrugog and Ruabon. There are several small reservoirs in this area. At the southern edge of the moors the cliffs of Eglwyseg Rocks overlook the River Dee and the Vale of Llangollen. On the western side there are more cliffs at World's End while the Horseshoe Pass separates the moors from Llantysilio Mountain. Llandegla Forest, a large conifer plantation, covers the north-western side.
Ruabon Moors are part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest and hold a wide variety of plant and animal life. Large parts of the moors are covered with heather. Where there are outcrops of limestone on the surface a number of scarce plants can be found such as prickly sedge, dark red helleborine and rigid buckler-fern.
The moors are managed for red grouse shooting. Huge numbers were shot in the past (an average of 4658 per year from 1900 to 1913) but numbers have now decreased dramatically. The area is also home to black grouse and a major conservation programme has caused their population to increase in recent years. Other birds which can be seen include peregrine falcon, merlin, hen harrier, short-eared owl and ring ouzel.
The area has been modified by human activity since prehistoric times when people built cairns and cleared the original forest. Mining has taken place in the area since Roman times and there are still many shafts of disused lead, zinc, silver and coal mines dotting the area. During the Second World War bombs were dropped on the moors by German planes heading to and from Liverpool and a number of bomb craters can still be seen today.
The area is popular with walkers and rock-climbers and the Offa's Dyke Path crosses the region.

Gulls or seagulls are seabirds of the family Laridae in the suborder Lari. They are most closely related to the terns (family Sternidae) and only distantly related to auks, skimmers, and more distantly to the waders. Gulls are typically medium to large birds, usually grey or white, often with black markings on the head or wings. They typically have harsh wailing or squawking calls; stout, longish bills; and webbed feet. - Daucus carota, whose common names include wild carrot, bird's nest, bishop's lace, and Queen Anne's lace (North America), is a flowering plant in the family Apiaceae, native to temperate regions of Europe and southwest Asia, and naturalized to North America and Australia.
D. carota was introduced and naturalized in North America, where it is often known as "Queen Anne's lace". Both Anne, Queen of Great Britain, and her great grandmother, Anne of Denmark, are taken to be the Queen Anne for which the plant is named. It is so called because the flower resembles lace; the red flower in the center is thought to represent a blood droplet where Queen Anne pricked herself with a needle when she was making the lace.
The flowers are small and dull white, clustered in flat, dense umbels. They may be pink in bud and may have a reddish flower in the centre of the umbel. The lower bracts are three-forked or pinnate, which distinguishes the plant from other white-flowered umbellifers.
As the seeds develop, the umbel curls up at the edges, becomes more congested, and develops a concave surface bird's nest. The fruits are oval and flattened, with short styles and hooked spines. The dried umbels detach from the plant, becoming tumbleweeds.

The Stelvio Pass, located in Italy, at 2757 m (9045 feet) is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps, and the second highest in the Alps, slightly below the Col de l'Iseran (2770 m, 9088 feet).
It is located in the Italian Alps north of Bormio in the province of Sondrio and south of Stilfs in South Tyrol, some 75 km (47 mi) from Bolzano, close to the Swiss border, as the Umbrail Pass joins the Stilfser Joch's southern ramp nearby. The "Three languages peak" (Dreisprachenspitze) above the pass is so named because this is where the Italian, German and Romansh languages meet.
The road connects the Valtellina with the upper Adige valley (Vinschgau) and Meran. The most important mountain range next to the Stilfser Joch is the Ortler Alps. Adjacent to the pass road there is a large summer skiing area. Important mountains nearby include Ortler, Monte Livrio, Monte Scorluzzo, and Monte Zebrù.

Mormon Row Historic District - Mormon Row is a line of homestead complexes along the Jackson-Moran Road near the southeast corner of Grand Teton National Park, in the valley called Jackson Hole. The rural historic landscape's period of significance includes the construction of the Andy Chambers, T.A. Moulton and John Moulton farms from 1908 to the 1950s. Six building clusters and a separate ruin illustrate Mormon settlement in the area and comprise such features as drainage systems, barns, fields and corrals. Apart from John and T.A. Moulton, other settlers in the area were Joseph Eggleston, Albert Gunther, Henry May, Thomas Murphy and George Riniker. The area is also known as Antelope Flats, situated between the towns of Moose and Kelly. It is a popular destination for tourists and photographers on account of the historic buildings, the herds of bison, and the spectacular Teton Range rising in the background. The alluvial soil to the east of Blacktail Butte was more suitable than most locations in Jackson Hole for farming, somewhat hampered by a lack of readily available water. The Mormon homesteaders began to arrive in the 1890s from Idaho, creating a community called "Gros Ventre", with a total of 27 homesteads. The Mormon settlers tended to create clustered communities, in contrast to the isolated homesteads more typical of Jackson Hole. Grand Teton National Park is a United States National Park in northwestern Wyoming. At approximately 310,000 acres (480 sq mi; 130,000 ha; 1,300 km2), the park includes the major peaks of the 40-mile-long (64 km) Teton Range as well as most of the northern sections of the valley known as Jackson Hole. It is only 10 miles (16 km) south of Yellowstone National Park, to which it is connected by the National Park Service-managed John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway. Along with surrounding National Forests, these three protected areas constitute the almost 18,000,000-acre (7,300,000 ha) Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, one of the largest intact mid-latitude temperate ecosystems in the world. Human history of the Grand Teton region dates back at least 11,000 years, when the first nomadic hunter-gatherer Paleo-Indians began migrating into the region during warmer months pursuing food and supplies. In the early 19th century, the first White explorers encountered the eastern Shoshone natives. U.S. Government expeditions to the region commenced in the mid-19th century as an offshoot of exploration in Yellowstone, with the first permanent white settlers in Jackson Hole arriving in the 1880s. Efforts to preserve the region as a national park commenced in the late 19th century, and in 1929 Grand Teton National Park was established, protecting the major peaks of the Teton Range. The valley of Jackson Hole remained in private ownership until the 1930s, when conservationists led by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. began purchasing land in Jackson Hole to be added to the existing national park. Against public opinion and with repeated Congressional efforts to repeal the measures, much of Jackson Hole was set aside for protection as Jackson Hole National Monument in 1943. The monument was abolished in 1950 and most of the monument land was added to Grand Teton National Park. Grand Teton National Park is named for Grand Teton, the tallest mountain in the Teton Range. The naming of the mountains is attributed to early 19th-century French-speaking trappers—les trois tétons (the three teats) was later anglicized and shortened to Tetons. At 13,775 feet (4,199 m), Grand Teton abruptly rises more than 7,000 feet (2,100 m) above Jackson Hole, almost 850 feet (260 m) higher than Mount Owen, the second-highest summit in the range. The park has numerous lakes, including 15-mile-long (24 km) Jackson Lake as well as streams of varying length and the upper main stem of the Snake River. Though in a state of recession, a dozen small glaciers persist at the higher elevations near the highest peaks in the range. Some of the rocks in the park are the oldest found in any U.S. National Park and have been dated at nearly 2.7 billion years. Grand Teton National Park is an almost pristine ecosystem and the same species of flora and fauna that have existed since prehistoric times can still be found there. More than 1,000 species of vascular plants, dozens of species of mammals, 300 species of birds, more than a dozen fish species and a few species of reptiles and amphibians exist. Due to various changes in the ecosystem, some of them human-induced, efforts have been made to provide enhanced protection to some species of native fish and the increasingly threatened whitebark pine. Grand Teton National Park is a popular destination for mountaineering, hiking, fishing and other forms of recreation. There are more than 1,000 drive-in campsites and over 200 miles (320 km) of hiking trails that provide access to backcountry camping areas. Noted for world-renowned trout fishing, the park is one of the few places to catch Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat trout. Grand Teton has several National Park Service-run visitor centers, and privately operated concessions for motels, lodges, gas stations and marinas.
