Smaller than the American Robin at 7 to 9 1/2 inches. The male is black with bright red shoulder patches. Females and young heavily streaked with a dusky brown color.
Their habitats include marshes, swamps and wet and dry meadows; pastures.
They breed from Alaska southeast across Canada to Newfoundland, and south to northern Baja California, central Mexico, the Gulf Coast and Florida. Winters regularly north to British Columbia, the Great Lakes and Pennsylvania.

Pictured here is a brown pelican which is native to North Topsail Beach in North Carolina. This particular pelican is a coastal bird with a distinctive pouch and an enormous wingspan (sometimes measuring over 6 1/2 feet long). They’re often found gliding over ocean waves, or plunging headfirst into water from heights of up to 60 feet while searching for food.
Brown Pelicans reside in the coastal NC waters during most of the year, but a good number will migrate south for the winter. Small numbers of them remain in North Carolina year-round.*

Winneshiek County Conservation is branching out to include recyling education along with our nature-based environmental education programs for schools and the wider community. We will be working closely with the Winneshiek County Landfill on this project so I got a wonderful tour of the landfill from the great staff there today. They've done an amazing job of restoring prairie habitat over landfill cells that are full after they've been properly sealed, and they've also converted over a hundred acres of buffer lands around the landfill to wetlands, prairie and wildlife habitat. It was a learning experience for me, for until today I did not know the Winneshiek County Landfill has some of the best wildlife and pollinator habitat in Winneshiek County. I spent the afternoon there taking nature photos that will be used to promote our new recyling education programs and put the landfill in a positive light since it really is a pretty place to visit. This black swallowtail butterfly looks just like a blooming black and yellow flower here.

Male flame skimmers are known for their entirely red or dark orange body, this includes eyes, legs, and even wing veins. Females are usually a medium or darker brown with some thin, yellow markings. Due to its choice habitat of warm ponds, streams, or hot springs, flame skimmers are found mainly in the southwestern part of the United States.

View of the centre of the Belgian town of Ypres. Actually the town is in the Flemish speaking part of Belgium and there the name is Ieper - but the French name of the town were made quite (in)famous during the First World War.
The view here includes the Cloth hall (Lakenhalle van Ieper or Les Halles aux draps d'Ypres) originally built in the 13th century and St Martin's cathedral (Sint-Maartenskathedraal or Cathédrale Saint-Martin) begun in the same century, to be finished in 1370. Both these building were more or less completely destroyed in the First World War and the buildings you see now are (very well done) copies of the originals (the cathedral built in the 1920s and the Cloth hall 1930s-60s).

Goldcrest - Regulus regulus
The goldcrest (Regulus regulus) is a very small passerine bird in the kinglet family. Its colourful golden crest feathers gives rise to its English and scientific names, and possibly to it being called the king of the birds in European folklore. Several subspecies are recognised across the very large distribution range that includes much of Eurasia and the islands of Macaronesia. Birds from the north and east of its breeding range migrate to winter further south.
The goldcrest is the smallest European bird, 8.5–9.5 cm (3.3–3.7 in) in length,[2] with a 13.5–15.5 cm (5.3–6.1 in) wingspan and a weight of 4.5–7.0 g (0.16–0.25 oz).
Several small passerine species survive freezing winter nights by inducing a lower metabolic rate and hypothermia, of a maximum of 10 °C (18 °F) below normal body temperature, in order to reduce energy consumption overnight. However, in freezing conditions, it may be that for very small birds, including the tiny goldcrest, the energy economies of induced hypothermia may be insufficient to counterbalance the negative effects of hypothermia including the energy required to raise body temperature back to normal at dawn. Observations of five well-fed birds suggest that they maintain normal body temperatures during cold nights by metabolising fat laid down during the day, and that they actually use behavioural thermoregulation strategies, such as collective roosting in dense foliage or snow holes to survive winter nights. Two birds roosting together reduce their heat loss by a quarter, and three birds by a third. During an 18‑hour winter night, with temperatures as low as −25 °C (−13 °F) in the north of its range, goldcrests huddled together can each burn off fat equivalent to 20% of body weight to keep warm.
Until the severe winter of 1916–17 the Goldcrest was abundant and widespread, nesting in all the wooded portions of our islands; in 1920 it could have little more than an obituary notice, for the nesting stock was practically wiped out. ... and for some years, even as a winter visitor, the Goldcrest remained rare, absent from most of its nesting haunts. It is, however, now fully re-established.
Conversely, populations can expand rapidly after a series of mild winters. In lowland Britain, there was an increase of 48% following the 1970/71 winter, with many pairs spreading into deciduous woodlands where they would not normally breed.
In culture
Aristotle (384–322 BC) and Pliny (23–79 AD) both wrote about the legend of a contest among the birds to see who should be their king, the title to be awarded to the one that could fly highest. Initially, it looked as though the eagle would win easily, but as he began to tire, a small bird that had hidden under the eagle's tail feathers emerged to fly even higher and claimed the title. Following from this legend, in much European folklore the wren has been described as the king of the birds or as a flame bearer. However, these terms were also applied to the Regulus species, the fiery crowns of the goldcrest and firecrest making them more likely to be the original bearers of these titles, and, because of the legend's reference to the smallest of birds becoming king, the title was probably transferred to the equally tiny wren. The confusion was probably compounded by the similarity and consequent interchangeability of the Greek words for the wren (βασιλεύς basileus, and the crests (βασιλισκος basiliskos, In English, the association between the goldcrest and Eurasian wren may have been reinforced by the kinglet's old name of gold-crested wren.
This tiny woodland bird has had little other impact on literature, although it is the subject of Charles Tennyson Turner's short poem, The Gold-crested Wren first published in 1868. An old English name for the goldcrest is the woodcock pilot, since migrating birds preceded the arrival of Eurasian woodcocks by a couple of days. There are unfounded legends that the goldcrest would hitch a ride in the feathers of the larger bird, and similar stories claimed that owls provided the transport. Suffolk fishermen called this bird herring spink or tot o'er seas because migrating goldcrests often landed on the rigging of herring boats out in the North Sea.

Kilmaluag is a scattered township at the northernmost tip of the Isle of Skye's Trotternish Peninsula. It includes the hamlets of Solitote, Aird, Connista, Kendram, and Balmacqueen. The township's name means 'Church of St Moluag', referring to the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to the region.
Anthurium is a genus of about 1000 species of flowering plants, the largest genus of the arum family, Araceae. General common names include anthurium, tailflower, flamingo flower, and laceleaf. It's native to tropical America, from Mexico to northern Argentina and Uruguay. They are grown for their attractive flowering bracts which are popular with the cut flower trade. All parts of the plant, are poisonous. If ingested, may cause mild stomach disorders. Anthurium is a genus of herbs often growing as epiphytes on other plants. Some are terrestrial. The leaves are often clustered and are variable in shape. The inflorescence bears small flowers which are perfect, containing male and female structures. The flowers are contained in dense spirals on the spadix. The spadix is often elongated into a spike shape, but it can be globe-shaped or club-shaped. Beneath the spadix is the spathe, a type of bract. This is variable in shape, as well, but it is lance-shaped in many species. It may extend out flat or in a curve. Sometimes it covers the spadix like a hood. The fruits develop from the flowers on the spadix. They are juicy berries varying in color, usually containing two seeds. 3523

Por el oeste, las sierras de Frihuela y Castejón, integradas en el Sistema Ibérico, hacen de límite, junto con la Sierra Cebollera al sur, con la provincia de Soria. En Villoslada hay un centro de interpretación del parque natural de la Sierra de Cebollera.
El techo del municipio es una enorme planicie llamada La Mesa (2168 m) que comparte con Lumbreras de Cameros. Grand Teton National Park is a United States National Park in northwestern Wyoming. At approximately 310,000 acres (480 sq. mi; 130,000 ha; 1,300 km2), the park includes the major peaks of the 40-mile-long (64 km) Teton Range as well as most of the northern sections of the valley known as Jackson Hole. It is only 10 miles (16 km) south of Yellowstone National Park, to which it is connected by the National Park Service-managed John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway. Along with surrounding National Forests, these three protected areas constitute the almost 18,000,000-acre (7,300,000 ha) Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, one of the largest intact mid-latitude temperate ecosystems in the world.
Human history of the Grand Teton region dates back at least 11,000 years, when the first nomadic hunter-gatherer Paleo-Indians began migrating into the region during warmer months pursuing food and supplies. In the early 19th century, the first White explorers encountered the eastern Shoshone natives. Between 1810 and 1840, the region attracted fur trading companies that vied for control of the lucrative beaver pelt trade. U.S. Government expeditions to the region commenced in the mid-19th century as an offshoot of exploration in Yellowstone, with the first permanent white settlers in Jackson Hole arriving in the 1880s.
Efforts to preserve the region as a national park commenced in the late 19th century, and in 1929 Grand Teton National Park was established, protecting the major peaks of the Teton Range. The valley of Jackson Hole remained in private ownership until the 1930s, when conservationists led by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. began purchasing land in Jackson Hole to be added to the existing national park. Against public opinion and with repeated Congressional efforts to repeal the measures, much of Jackson Hole was set aside for protection as Jackson Hole National Monument in 1943. The monument was abolished in 1950 and most of the monument land was added to Grand Teton National Park.
Grand Teton National Park is named for Grand Teton, the tallest mountain in the Teton Range. The naming of the mountains is attributed to early 19th-century French-speaking trappers—les trois tétons (the three teats) was later anglicized and shortened to Tetons. At 13,775 feet (4,199 m), Grand Teton abruptly rises more than 7,000 feet (2,100 m) above Jackson Hole, almost 850 feet (260 m) higher than Mount Owen, the second-highest summit in the range. The park has numerous lakes, including 15-mile-long (24 km) Jackson Lake as well as streams of varying length and the upper main stem of the Snake River. Though in a state of recession, a dozen small glaciers persist at the higher elevations near the highest peaks in the range. Some of the rocks in the park are the oldest found in any U.S. National Park and have been dated at nearly 2.7 billion years.
Christ's College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge. The college includes the Master, the Fellows of the College, and about 450 undergraduate and 170 graduate students. The college was founded by William Byngham in 1437 as God's House. It was such a wild morning when we went round the corner from Vestrahorn. It was one of those days where you had to park pointing into the wind otherwise you would lose your doors if the wind caught them. But having that forethought, unfortunately, that just meant you had to fight to open the door against the force of nature's fury.
We did manage to get out and stagger about on the headland next to the orange Hvalnes lighthouse that stands like the headstrong bridge structure of an oceangoing tug.
But seeking an image of black and white stripy beach we headed down to the strand that stretches as far as the eye can see, and is a feature of about half of Iceland's southern coast.
I did take a brief phone pano, and it looks good, but I also tried a four frame pano with the Nikon which is better in some respects, but less so in others. I should have made it five frames wide to include a bit more of the sea to the left. But, hey ho, you live and learn!
I see Gary had a wander on the black sand, but seems to have gone and hidden behind a rock again.
It was only a few hundred yards back to the car, but it was one of the most exhausting walks I can remember fighting uphill into that wind on deep loose black gravel. Rarely have I been more grateful to get back in a car!

Hi girlies, here is my new Hairbase "Jennifer", this product is part of a TRES BEAU collaboration between NONNATIVE and GOREGLAM. I'm using Lelutka's Avalon Head in this photo.
I made this product in Baked On Mesh (BOM) and it has 10 colors to choose from. It also includes two Tintable versions for you to tint in any color you desire. The point of creating this product was to reduce the forehead and use it with different hairs, I hope you like it.
