John Donne (pronounced /ˈdʌn/ "dunn"; 1572 – 31 March 1631) was an English Jacobean poet, preacher and a major representative of the metaphysical poets of the period. His works are notable for their realistic and sensual style and include sonnets, love poetry, religious poems, Latin translations, epigrams, elegies, songs, satires and sermons. His poetry is noted for its vibrancy of language and inventiveness of metaphor, especially as compared to those of his contemporaries.

 

Despite his great education and poetic talents, he lived in poverty for several years, relying heavily on wealthy friends. In 1615 he became an Anglican priest and, in 1621, was appointed the Dean of St Paul's Cathedral in London.

 

John Donne was born on Bread Street in London, England, into a Catholic family at a time when Catholicism was illegal in England.[3] Donne was the third of six children. His father, also named John Donne, was of Welsh descent, and a warden of the Ironmongers Company in the City of London. Donne's father was a respected Catholic who avoided unwelcome government attention out of fear of being persecuted for his religious faith.[4][5] Donne's father died in 1576, leaving his wife, Elizabeth Heywood, the responsibility of raising their children.[5] Elizabeth Heywood, also from a noted Catholic family, was the daughter of John Heywood, the playwright, and sister of Jasper Heywood, the translator and Jesuit. She was a great-niece of the Catholic martyr Thomas More.[6] This tradition of martyrdom would continue among Donne’s closer relatives, many of whom were executed or exiled for religious reasons.[7] Despite the obvious dangers, Donne’s family arranged for his education by the Jesuits, which gave him a deep knowledge of his religion that equipped him for the ideological religious conflicts of his time.[6] Donne's mother married Dr. John Syminges, a wealthy widower with three children, a few months after Donne's father died. In 1577, his mother died, followed by two more of his sisters, Mary and Katherine, in 1581.

 

Donne was a student at Hart Hall, now Hertford College, Oxford, from the age of 11. After three years at Oxford he was admitted to the University of Cambridge, where he studied for another three years.[8] He was unable to obtain a degree from either institution because of his Catholicism, since he could not take the Oath of Supremacy required of graduates.[6] In 1591 he was accepted as a student at the Thavies Inn legal school, one of the Inns of Chancery in London. In 1592 he was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn, one of the Inns of Court[6], where he held the office of Master of the Revels.[3] His brother Henry was also a university student prior to his arrest in 1593 for harbouring a Catholic priest, William Harrington, whom Henry betrayed under torture.[3] Harrington was tortured on the rack, hanged until not quite dead, and then was subjected to live disembowelment.[3] Henry Donne died in Newgate prison of bubonic plague, leading John Donne to begin questioning his Catholic faith.[5]

 

During and after his education, Donne spent much of his considerable inheritance on women, literature, pastimes and travel.[4][6] Although there is no record detailing precisely where he traveled, it is known that he traveled across Europe and later fought with the Earl of Essex and Sir Walter Raleigh against the Spanish at Cádiz (1596) and the Azores (1597) and witnessed the loss of the Spanish flagship, the San Felipe.[1][5][9] According to Izaak Walton, who wrote a biography of Donne in 1640:

“ ... he returned not back into England till he had stayed some years, first in Italy, and then in Spain, where he made many useful observations of those countries, their laws and manner of government, and returned perfect in their languages. ”

 

By the age of 25 he was well prepared for the diplomatic career he appeared to be seeking.[9] He was appointed chief secretary to the Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, Sir Thomas Egerton, and was established at Egerton’s London home, York House, Strand close to the Palace of Whitehall, then the most influential social centre in England.

 

During the next four years he fell in love with Egerton's niece Anne More, and they were married just before Christmas [3] in 1601 against the wishes of both Egerton and her father, George More, Lieutenant of the Tower. This ruined his career and earned him a short stay in Fleet Prison, along with the priest who married them and the man who acted as a witness to the wedding. Donne was released when the marriage was proven valid, and soon secured the release of the other two. Walton tells us that when he wrote to his wife to tell her about losing his post, he wrote after his name: John Donne, Anne Donne, Un-done. It was not until 1609 that Donne was reconciled with his father-in-law and received his wife's dowry.

 

Following his release, Donne had to accept a retired country life in Pyrford, Surrey.[6] Over the next few years he scraped a meagre living as a lawyer, depending on his wife’s cousin Sir Francis Wolly to house him, his wife, and their children. Since Anne Donne had a baby almost every year, this was a very generous gesture. Though he practiced law and worked as an assistant pamphleteer to Thomas Morton, he was in a state of constant financial insecurity, with a growing family to provide for.[6]

 

Anne bore him 12 children in 16 years of marriage (including two stillbirths - their eighth and then in 1617 their last child); indeed, she spent most of her married life either pregnant or nursing. The 10 surviving children were named Constance, John, George, Francis, Lucy (after Donne's patroness Lucy, Countess of Bedford, her godmother), Bridget, Mary, Nicholas, Margaret and Elizabeth. Francis, Nicholas and Mary died before they were ten. In a state of despair, Donne noted that the death of a child would mean one less mouth to feed, but he could not afford the burial expenses. During this time Donne wrote, but did not publish, Biathanatos, his defense of suicide.[7] His wife died on 15 August 1617, five days after giving birth to their twelfth child, a still-born baby. Donne mourned her deeply, including writing the 17th Holy Sonnet.[6] He never remarried; this was quite unusual for the time, especially as he had a large family to bring up.

 

Donne's earliest poems showed a developed knowledge of English society coupled with sharp criticism of its problems. His satires dealt with common Elizabethan topics, such as corruption in the legal system, mediocre poets, and pompous courtiers. His images of sickness, vomit, manure, and plague assisted in the creation of a strongly satiric world populated by all the fools and knaves of England. His third satire, however, deals with the problem of true religion, a matter of great importance to Donne. He argued that it was better to examine carefully one's religious convictions than blindly to follow any established tradition, for none would be saved at the Final Judgment, by claiming "A Harry, or a Martin taught [them] this."[7]

 

Donne's early career was also notable for his erotic poetry, especially his elegies, in which he employed unconventional metaphors, such as a flea biting two lovers being compared to sex.[9] In Elegy XIX: To His Mistress Going to Bed, he poetically undressed his mistress and compared the act of fondling to the exploration of America. In Elegy XVIII, he compared the gap between his lover's breasts to the Hellespont.[9] Donne did not publish these poems, although he did allow them to circulate widely in manuscript form.

 

Donne was elected as Member of Parliament for the constituency of Brackley in 1602, but this was not a paid position and Donne struggled to provide for his family, relying heavily upon rich friends.[6] The fashion for coterie poetry of the period gave him a means to seek patronage and many of his poems were written for wealthy friends or patrons, especially Sir Robert Drury, who came to be Donne's chief patron in 1610.[9] Donne wrote the two Anniversaries, An Anatomy of the World (1611) and Of the Progress of the Soul, (1612), for Drury. While historians are not certain as to the precise reasons for which Donne left the Catholic Church, he was certainly in communication with the King, James I of England, and in 1610 and 1611 he wrote two anti-Catholic polemics: Pseudo-Martyr and Ignatius his Conclave.[6] Although James was pleased with Donne's work, he refused to reinstate him at court and instead urged him to take holy orders.[5] Although Donne was at first reluctant, feeling unworthy of a clerical career, he finally acceded to the King's wishes and in 1615 was ordained into the Church of England.[9]

 

Donne became a Royal Chaplain in late 1615, Reader of Divinity at Lincoln's Inn in 1616, and received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Cambridge University in 1618.[6] Later in 1618 he became chaplain to Viscount Doncaster, who was on an embassy to the princes of Germany. Donne did not return to England until 1620.[6] In 1621 Donne was made Dean of St Paul's, a leading (and well-paid) position in the Church of England and one he held until his death in 1631. During his period as Dean his daughter Lucy died, aged eighteen. It was in late November and early December of 1623 that he suffered a nearly fatal illness, thought to be either typhus or a combination of a cold followed by the seven-day relapsing fever. During his convalescence he wrote a series of meditations and prayers on health, pain, and sickness that were published as a book in 1624 under the title of Devotions upon Emergent Occasions. Meditation XVII later became well known for its phrase "for whom the bell tolls" and the statement that "no man is an island". In 1624 he became vicar of St Dunstan-in-the-West, and 1625 a Royal Chaplain to Charles I.[6] He earned a reputation as an eloquent preacher and 160 of his sermons have survived, including the famous Death’s Duel sermon delivered at the Palace of Whitehall before King Charles I in February 1631.

 

It is thought that his final illness was stomach cancer. He died on 31 March 1631 having published many poems in his lifetime; but having left a body of work fiercely engaged with the emotional and intellectual conflicts of his age. John Donne is buried in St Paul's, where a memorial statue of him was erected (carved from a drawing of him in his shroud), with a Latin epigraph probably composed by himself.

This plant is a species of liana belonging to the Apocinaceae family. It is a robust, woody vine with oval leaves that have a red central rib. The genus includes lianas, shrubs, and small trees. The flowers are flared and showy. The fruit contains elongated seeds with terminal silks. Native to western and equatorial Africa. It appears naturally in the virgin forest of Río Muni.It acts as a remedy for fever and gonorrhea. It is also cardiotonic, although in high doses it can be fatal, which is why it is used as a poison for crossbow arrows. Strophanthus: generic name derived from "strophos" and "anthos" (crooked flower) due to the crooked segments of its corolla, which in some species reach up to 35 cm in length. Various African tribes use some species to prepare the poison for their arrows.

The breeding range includes northwest Africa, most of Europe and extends eastwards across temperate Asia to the Angara River and the southern end of Lake Baikal in Siberia. There are also a number of distinctive subspecies on the Azores, the Canary Islands and the Madeira Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The chaffinch was introduced from Britain into several of its overseas territories in the 19th century. In New Zealand the chaffinch has colonised both the North and South Islands.

The sloping cliffs are covered in places by hawthorn and blackthorn. Wild flowers include two yellow-flowered umbellifers, Alexanders, an early flowering plant introduced by the romans and the aromatic fennel flowering from mid-summer.

 

Sea beet, sea purslane, sea sandwort and sea rocket grow along the foreshore, together with the unusual sea holly.

 

Silver ragwort a plant of Mediterranean origin is also now well established along this coast.

Schoenthal Monastery, first mentioned in 1145, includes one of the oldest churches in Switzerland. It is considered a showpiece of Romanesque architecture. Its western façade features ashlar masonry, a portal with a depiction of a lamb carrying a cross, and an arch supported by a lion baring its teeth on one side, and by a man on the other. The inscription on the arch reads: HIC EST RODO.

 

Of the murals on the inside of the church, a depiction of St. Christopher has been preserved above the gateway to the cloister dating from about 1310/20. Behind the eastern façade, fragments can be seen of an angel swinging a censer; these date from around 1430. The bell in the steeple was cast in Aarau in the 15th century. The deconsecrated monastery was used for various commercial purposes over a period of 500 years. As of 1986, the new owner had extensive renovations carried out in collaboration with the canton’s departments of archaeology and the preservation of historical monuments. The latter recommended using the traditional plaster made of slaked lime.

This ice fishing hut on Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada had silhouetted cutouts on both sides - this one, a youngster with a fish, and one on the other side of a man sitting in a folding chair, fishing. Such creativity!

This is the third image in a series of images I shot in Manitoba in December, 2019 which won 1st Place in the Architecture category of the Sony World Photography Awards. The Awards ceremony and the exhibition have been cancelled, but winners will be announced on June 9.

 

SWPA has strict entry rules outlining when images can be shot and if they are published (publishing includes showing images on social media). As I shot these in December and had to submit them in mid-January I didn’t have a chance to show them online, so they were submitted as ‘unpublished’. I have received permission now to publish them on my website and on social media, so here you go.

 

I wrote a short blog post about this trip to Manitoba (and North Dakota) to photograph these ice fishing huts in December, 2019.

Here's another shot from my whirlwind late summer trip to the Treaure State of our second go at Montana Rail Link's 840 local headed back up to the 2nd Sub mainline after working the cement plant at Montana City. They are seen here approaching the MT Hwy 282 crossing about 3/4ths of a mile from the junction. This was once the location of the massive ASARCO East Helena smelter that refined lead along with trace elements of precious metals from 1888 until 2001. A huge railroad customer for over a century, the plant has since been demolished and only the massive slag pile remains. Interestingly this is one of the only sections of MRL trackage that is not formerly Northern Pacific. This line was once a part of the Great Northern Railway's Great Falls to Butte route built by the Montana Central Railway in 1888. Merged into the GN in 1907 the line provided access to a the great mining town of Butte that was served by four class 1s all vying for lucrative traffic interchanged rom the Anaconda Copper Company's Butte, Anaconda and Pacific Railroad. Known as the 8th Sub of GN's Butte Division in latter years it was cut back just two years after the formation of Burlington Northern in 1972 when the southern 30 miles of the line across the Continental Divide at 6352 ft Elk Park Pass was abandoned. 35 miles from Montana City to Basin hung on for another decade until it was cut back to its present length in 1982. The five mile stub was sold to the new MRL in 1987 though interestingly BN and BNSF retained the north end of the line from Helena Jct. to Great Falls which remains intact but out of service to this day.

 

For the prior few months, the assigned power for this job had been MRL 109 and 355. Both are veteran ex Burlington Northern units, the former a GP9 originally blt. Feb. 1955 as Northern Pacific 210 and the latter an SD45 blt. Dec. 1971 as BN 6558. Long known for its preference for the 20 cylinder EMD brutes, the MRL rostered some 52 indivdual units of the model at varying times during the past 35 years (and over 80 if you include dash 2 and cowl variants) though today this one is the last of her breed in service on the property.

The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, previously known as Villa Vizcaya, is the former villa and estate of businessman James Deering, of the Deering McCormick-International Harvester fortune, on Biscayne Bay in the present day Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami, Florida.

 

The early 20th century Vizcaya estate also includes extensive Italian Renaissance gardens; a native woodland landscape; and a historic village outbuildings compound. The landscape and architecture were influenced by Veneto and Tuscan Italian Renaissance models and designed in the Mediterranean Revival architecture style, with Baroque elements. F. Burrall Hoffman was the architect, Paul Chalfin was the design director, and Diego Suarez was the landscape architect.

 

Miami-Dade County now owns the Vizcaya property, as the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, which is open to the public. The location is served by the Vizcaya Station of the Miami Metrorail.

 

The estate property originally consisted of 180 acres (73 ha) of shoreline Mangrove swamps and dense inland native tropical forests. Being a conservationist, Deering sited the development of the estate portion along the shore to conserve the forests. This portion was to include the villa, formal gardens, recreational amenities, expansive lagoon gardens with new islets, potager and grazing fields, and a village services compound. Deering began construction of Vizcaya in 1912 officially beginning occupancy on Christmas Day 1916 when he arrived aboard his yacht Nepenthe.

 

The villa was built primarily between 1914 and 1922, at a cost of $15 million, while the construction of the extensive elaborate Italian Renaissance gardens and the village continued into 1923. During the World War I years building trades and supplies were difficult to acquire in Florida. Vizcaya is noteworthy for adapting historical European aesthetic traditions to South Florida's subtropical ecoregion. For example; it combined imported French and Italian garden layouts and elements implemented in Cuban limestone stonework with Floridian coral architectural trim and planted with sub-tropic compatible and native plants that thrived in the habitat and climate. Palms and Philodendrons had not been represented in the emulated gardens of Tuscany or Île-de-France.

These funds have been matched by grants from FEMA, Save America's Treasures, and numerous other funders. Plans include the restoration of the villa and gardens, and adaptation of the historic village compound for exhibition and educational facilities; however, additional funds are required for this. The completed first phase of this project has included the rebuilding of the museum's Cafe and Shop (in historic recreation areas of the building adjacent to the pool), renovation of the East and West Gate Lodges that flank South Miami Avenue, and rebuilding of the David A. Klein Orchidarium in a plan that generally uses historic precedent. At the same time, Vizcaya has completed the first half of a major conservation program of its outdoor sculpture collections. With a consulting landscape architect, Vizcaya has too finished a comprehensive cultural landscape report, which will be a vital tool in the ongoing restoration of the formal gardens.

Nearly every festival in the southern most Indian state Kerala includes at least one elephant draped in gold-plated caparisons. In recent years, even mosques and churches have been known to hire elephants for religious celebrations.

 

Kerala’s annual temple festivals, known as poorams, are competitive, and there’s great pressure to add glory to the temple by bringing in more and more elephants every year, which usually requires hiring private elephants to supplement the ones the devaswom already owns. During temple season, roadside posters herald the appearance of popular elephants, some of which have their own fan clubs.

 

To control the elephants, their handlers, known as mahouts, often treat them roughly with poles and pointed hooks.

 

“They will learn that I am the mahout only if I hurt them,” one handler said at a small temple festival in Tiruvalla last year. “All elephants have to be kept in chains.”

 

Current regulations allow elephants to be paraded only for a few hours at a time, but such rules are ignored at festivals like the one in Tiruvalla, where the mahouts said their elephants would be working from dusk till dawn.

 

But as elephant mania has swelled, new recommendations and regulations are introduced every year to keep the use of elephants in check – and possibly to phase it out entirely.

 

In 2010, the same year that the elephant joined the tiger in being designated a National Heritage Animal in India, a report issued by the government-appointed Elephant Task Force gave an audacious vision of the future of captive elephants in Kerala. Known as the Gajah report, its recommendations included an eventual ban on the commercial use of elephants and even on their use in religious ceremonies. All privately owned elephants, the report suggested, should become government property; captive elephants’ current owners would instead be considered their “guardians

Koh Tao is a beautiful island located in the Gulf of Thailand, about 70 kilometers east of mainland Thailand. Part of an archipelago that also includes Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, the island is best known for its breathtaking natural beauty and diving and snorkeling opportunities. Koh Tao is known worldwide as one of the top destinations for divers. The island offers an abundance of diving schools and dive sites, ranging from shallow coral reefs to deep wrecks. The crystal clear waters and diverse marine biodiversity make it an ideal place to learn to dive or improve your diving skills. The island has several beautiful beaches with soft white sand and crystal clear water. These beaches offer excellent opportunities for sunbathing, swimming and relaxing. Koh Tao also has many opportunities for adventure activities such as hiking, rock climbing and kayaking. The island is covered in lush jungle and offers beautiful views from higher vantage points. Although Koh Tao is best known for its quiet and relaxing atmosphere, the island also has a vibrant nightlife. There are plenty of bars and restaurants where travelers can enjoy delicious food and drinks.

 

The John Suwan viewpoint is located at the southernmost tip of Koh Tao. Depending on the weather, it's crucial to have water with you as it can get extremely hot on the way to the viewpoint and at the top. Temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius are not uncommon. The path to the top is rocky, challenging, and uphill. It's best to wear sturdy footwear and avoid sandals or flip-flops. There are several rock blocks you need to scramble over, though many of them have larger ropes attached to assist you in climbing up. Just before reaching the top, you'll also need to maneuver through a few rock blocks and then pull yourself up at the top of the rocks.

Upon reaching the summit, you'll be rewarded with what is considered one of the most stunning views of Koh Tao: a perfect panoramic view of Chalok Baan Kao and Thian Og bays. On a clear day, you can also see Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. Thanks to the view over the bays, you can capture beautiful photos of the crystal-clear turquoise water surrounding Koh Tao and the shallow coral reefs below. John Suwan gets its name from local landowners, as it was first discovered by Mr. Suwan and his friend Mr. John.

Ever since its grand opening City Center has become the centerpiece of downtown West Palm Beach. The City Center complex includes the City Hall (150,000 GSF, including the City’s Commission Chambers), the Mandel Public Library (85,000 GSF, including a 150-seat auditorium, children’s library, and teen library), the Palm Beach Photographic Centre and Museum (35,000 GSF) and a parking garage for 300 cars with charging stations for electric vehicles.

 

Song + Associates originally conducted a space-needs study in 1997 to program the future functions of City Center as part of Phase I for the project. Once funding was established years later, Song + Associates validated the study by providing necessary program modifications to reflect the city’s growth and reorganization. We also developed new programs for those departments that were not part of the original study. This phase of the project consisted of weekly meetings with the library staff, Photographic Centre staff, and each of the 22 departments within City Hall in order to understand the workflow, workspaces, support spaces, and department adjacencies. After the programming and master planning was completed then came the design to create a civic connection space for the public all in one convenient location.

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

　あらすじ

　大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。

　上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。

　そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。

　大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。

　「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」

　ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。

  

本編

 

人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。

　ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。

　もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。

　二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。

　再生だ。

　明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。

　それが再生の意味だ。

 

　十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

Just before 7, I was woken by some blood curdling Fox noises from the allotments beyond my garden. It was still dark. After I had showered, there were some more noises. I peaked out and saw this Fox in my neighbour's garden - possibly trying to escape an amorous partner. Always good to get a photo in the bag early.
