In 1293, during the Florentine Republic, the notary Ser Mino de Cantoribus suggested replacing Santa Reparata by an even bigger and more magnificent cathedral, in such a way that 'industry and the power of man could not invent or even attempt anything greater or more beautiful ', and was prepared to finance the construction. However, the population was expected to contribute, and all wills now include a donation clause for the works. The project was entrusted to Arnolfo in 1294, and he ceremoniously laid the cornerstone on September 8, 1296.
Must every train photo include a locomotive? Of course not....and especially with a manifest train I like to keep my camera ready for an old fallen flag logo or just to show the train in its environment.
While this train had no particular noteworthy freight cars it was a nice classic mixed freight that was heavy on tank cars, and the model railroad like scene required more than just a head end photo, don't you concur?
This is southbound daily St. Luc Yard Montreal to Saratoga Springs manifest train 252 on a gloomy but colorful morning about 0745 AM. This is about MP 144.75 as measured from Albany, NY on modern day Canadian Pacific's Canadian Mainline. This famous locale is known as the Red Rocks high above Willsboro Bay on the west shore of Lake Champlain along the former Delaware and Hudson Railroad mainline that was completed as a through route to Canada in 1875.

Cuckoo - Cuculus Canorus
The common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) is a member of the cuckoo order of birds, Cuculiformes, which includes the roadrunners, the anis and the coucals.
This species is a widespread summer migrant to Europe and Asia, and winters in Africa. It is a brood parasite, which means it lays eggs in the nests of other bird species, particularly of dunnocks, meadow pipits, and reed warblers. Although its eggs are larger than those of its hosts, the eggs in each type of host nest resemble the host's eggs. The adult too is a mimic, in its case of the sparrowhawk; since that species is a predator, the mimicry gives the female time to lay her eggs without being seen to do so.
The English word "cuckoo" comes from the Old French cucu and it first appears about 1240 in the poem Sumer Is Icumen In - "Summer has come in / Loudly sing, Cuckoo!" in modern English.
The scientific name is from Latin. Cuculus is "cuckoo" and canorus, "melodious ".
A study using stuffed bird models found that small birds are less likely to approach common cuckoos that have barred underparts similar to the Eurasian sparrowhawk, a predatory bird. Eurasian reed warblers were found more aggressive to cuckoos that looked less hawk-like, meaning that the resemblance to the hawk helps the cuckoo to access the nests of potential hosts. Other small birds, great tits and blue tits, showed alarm and avoided attending feeders on seeing either (mounted) sparrowhawks or cuckoos; this implies that the cuckoo's hawklike appearance functions as protective mimicry, whether to reduce attacks by hawks or to make brood parasitism easier.
The common cuckoo is an obligate brood parasite; it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds. At the appropriate moment, the hen cuckoo flies down to the host's nest, pushes one egg out of the nest, lays an egg and flies off. The whole process takes about 10 seconds. A female may visit up to 50 nests during a breeding season. Common cuckoos first breed at the age of two years.
More than 100 host species have been recorded: meadow pipit, dunnock and Eurasian reed warbler are the most common hosts in northern Europe; garden warbler, meadow pipit, pied wagtail and European robin in central Europe; brambling and common redstart in Finland; and great reed warbler in Hungary.
Studies were made of 90 great reed warbler nests in central Hungary. There was an "unusually high" frequency of common cuckoo parasitism, with 64% of the nests parasitised. Of the nests targeted by cuckoos, 64% contained one cuckoo egg, 23% had two, 10% had three and 3% had four common cuckoo eggs. In total, 58% of the common cuckoo eggs were laid in nests that were multiply parasitised. When laying eggs in nests already parasitised, the female cuckoos removed one egg at random, showing no discrimination between the great reed warbler eggs and those of other cuckoos.
It was found that nests close to cuckoo perches were most vulnerable: multiple parasitised nests were closest to the vantage points, and unparasitised nests were farthest away. Nearly all the nests "in close vicinity" to the vantage points were parasitised. More visible nests were more likely to be selected by the common cuckoos. Female cuckoos use their vantage points to watch for potential hosts and find it easier to locate the more visible nests while they are egg-laying.
Cluxewe is a resort on First Nations Kwakwaka'wakw (or Kwakiutl) land that includes an excellent restaurant, cabins, and a campground. From the tenting area - which has its pros and a few major cons depending on which site you get - a long gravel spit leads to the mouth of the Cluxewe River, seen here in morning fog. The beach is pristine. Litter is almost non-existent. Walk it early in the morning and you will almost certainly be alone. To the seaward side is Broughton Strait; to the left, across a small hump of land, is the Cluxewe River and estuary. You may see eagles, loons, sandpipers, seals, herons, mink, and waterfowl. Two huge, old tree stumps guard the beach. I loved the textures, the growth lines embedded in the weathered wood, and the new growth springing out of the old.

Libidibia coriaria, synonym Caesalpinia coriaria, is a leguminous tree or large shrub native to the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, and northern and western South America. Common names include divi-divi, cascalote, guaracabuya, guatapana, nacascol, tan yong, and watapana (Aruba).
The species was first described by Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin in 1763, as Poinciana coriaria. In 1799, Carl Ludwig Willdenow transferred it to the genus Caesalpinia, and in 1830, Diederich von Schlechtendal transferred it to his newly created genus Libidibia. The genus Libidibia was not always accepted and the species was usually placed in Caesalpinia, until molecular phylogenetic studies led to the reinstatement of Libidibia. Tannins are extracted from divi-divi and it is used for dying leather and for ink. The larger trunks area also used for carpentry works. It has also medicinal properties.
Divi-divi is the national tree of Curaçao. It is also very common and popular on Aruba.

The Ring of Kerry is a 179-km-long circular tourist route in County Kerry, south-western Ireland. Clockwise from Killarney it follows the N71 to Kenmare, then the N70 around the Iveragh Peninsula to Killorglin – passing through Sneem, Waterville, Cahersiveen, and Glenbeigh – before returning to Killarney via the N72.
Popular points include Muckross House (near Killarney), Staigue stone fort and Derrynane House, home of Daniel O'Connell. Just south of Killarney, Ross Castle, Lough Leane, and Ladies View (a panoramic viewpoint), all located within Killarney National Park, are major attractions located along the Ring. A more complete list of major attractions along the Ring of Kerry includes: Gap of Dunloe, Bog Village, Kerry Woollen Mills, Rossbeigh Beach, Cahersiveen Heritage Centre, Derrynane House, Skellig Experience, Staigue Fort, Kenmare Lace, Moll's Gap, Ladies View, Torc Waterfall, Muckross House, The Blue Pool, Ross Castle, Ogham Stones, St Mary’s Cathedral, Muckross Abbey, Franciscan Friary, Kellegy Church, O’Connell Memorial Church, Sneem Church and Cemetery, Skellig Michael, Beehive Cells and the Stone Pillars marking an important grave.
There is also an established walking path named The Kerry Way, which takes its own route, and a signposted Ring of Kerry cycling path which uses older quieter roads where possible. The Kerry Way roughly follows the scenic driving route of the Ring of Kerry.
There are numerous variations to the route taking in St. Finian's Bay and Valentia Island which the official driving ring misses (the official cycling route takes in Valentia Island). As well as beaches, it also offers the Gap of Dunloe, Bog Village, Derrynane House, the Skellig Experience Valentia Island, Molls Gap, Torc Waterfall, Muckross House, and Ross Castle.

El Anillo de Kerry (en inglés, Ring of Kerry) es un circuito turístico situado en el Condado de Kerry, en el suroeste de Irlanda. This was not one of my 'usual' Mountain Bluebirds, and I was so happy to notice it, perched on a fence post. Managed to take about four rapid shots before a man, walking along a path leading from his property, caused it to fly. This handsome little bird made such a nice ending to my drive.
The weather forecast for yesterday was a risk of a thunderstorm in the afternoon. My plan had been to start out early in the morning and be home before any storm could arrive. However, as tends to happen, it was late morning before I finally made it out the front door. I enjoyed seeing the build-up of clouds, but was fortunate that the storm stayed away.
It had been a while since I last drove out to the area I wanted to explore; maybe eight months or so. I was curious as to whether I was going to be able to find a bird that many people had been reporting recently. A species that is rarely seen in Alberta, though I had seen a number of them on a trip to Texas in March 2019. I did also see one at a different location, at Frank Lake,but the extremely distant bird looked the size of a pin head.
My hope was that most people who wanted to see this bird had already been out there. My waiting till later paid off, as there was just one couple there. The bird was far away across on the other side of a pond, but my eyes eventually found it. I noticed two people walking fast towards it and I first thought they were unethical photographers. When I zoomed in, I could see that they were fishermen! The bird was flushed and fortunately flew that much closer to where I was standing, yet still quite a distance away. It was so interesting to watch this bird search every inch of the ground, several times catching a tiny fish. Suddenly, it flew, and I wondered what had spooked it. When I saw a photographer walking back through the trees closest to us, my question was answered. Am I really the only person who is not intent on getting inflight shots, even if the bird has to be flushed in order to get them? Anyway, I was so delighted to get the chance to watch it for a while.
On the way home, I drove the long way through my 'usual" area. I was surprised that I didn't see many birds, not even a Snipe. One Mountain Bluebird was so welcome.

Libidibia coriaria, synonym Caesalpinia coriaria, is a leguminous tree or large shrub native to the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, and northern and western South America. Common names include divi-divi, cascalote, guaracabuya, guatapana, nacascol, tan yong, and watapana (Aruba).
The species was first described by Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin in 1763, as Poinciana coriaria. In 1799, Carl Ludwig Willdenow transferred it to the genus Caesalpinia, and in 1830, Diederich von Schlechtendal transferred it to his newly created genus Libidibia. The genus Libidibia was not always accepted and the species was usually placed in Caesalpinia, until molecular phylogenetic studies led to the reinstatement of Libidibia. Tannins are extracted from divi-divi and it is used for dying leather and for ink. The larger trunks area also used for carpentry works. It has also medicinal properties.
Divi-divi is the national tree of Curaçao. It is also very common and popular on Aruba.
