Meet fish and wildlife biologist Andrew Dennhardt! Andrew discusses his conservation heroes and his path to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Learn more about Andrew in the latest Faces of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service interview.

By Olivia Beitelspacher, public affairs specialist

Olivia Beitelspacher: Welcome to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Andrew! Can you describe the role you play within the agency?

Andrew Dennhardt: I am a newly hired fish and wildlife biologist in the Listing and Recovery division of our Ecological Services office in Ventura, and my roles include drafting status reviews and assessments for federally threatened and endangered species as well as implementing conservation activities to advance their recovery. I am currently tasked with co-leading recovery efforts for the Santa Barbara County distinct population segment of the California tiger salamander (Ambystoma californiense), Arroyo toad (Anaxyrus californicus), and least Bell’s vireo (Vireo bellii pusillus).

OB: You’re certainly doing some important work! So tell us, what led you to a career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service?

AD: Today, the answer to this question stems immediately from my Directorate Resource Assistants Fellowship Program (DFP) internship in 2019, which was an exceptional experience. Historically, the answer stems gradually from my lifelong passion for people, research, education, and wildlife conservation. Growing up with self-proclaimed land stewards as parents on an organic produce farm, our family visited many conservation festivals together, and a celebration called “Bald Eagle Days” first introduced me to local agents of the Service as well as to their daily work with (and passions for) wildlife. Early on, I knew that I wanted to explore working for the Service in the future, and I was provided the opportunity to do so during my DFP internship in summer 2019. While studying past, present, and future recovery of least Bell’s vireo in that role, I also found an organization to call my home away from home in the Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office, and it was the hard work and passion of our biologists that readily brought me back for permanent employment with the Service. I am so thankful for this new opportunity, and I am also honored to be a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist—particularly after achieving this goal with the help of many generous mentors along the way.

OB: Wow, what a journey! The DFP internship is a fantastic way for students to learn more about conservation and establish a connection with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service . And it’s so cool that you get to come back to the office where you completed your DFP! So, Andrew, where did you go to school and what did you study?

AD: I received my bachelor’s degree in zoology, with a minor in environmental studies, from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, during which I researched natal dispersal habits of peregrine falcons in the midwestern U.S. Later, I received my master’s degree in wildlife and fisheries resources from West Virginia University in Morgantown, during which I studied the migration and population ecology of golden eagles in eastern North America. Recently, I completed my dual doctorate in fisheries and wildlife as well as ecology, evolutionary biology, and behavior at Michigan State University in East Lansing, during which I evaluated multi-species fish and bird population responses to environmental and anthropogenic factors across the Great Lakes region and continental North America. To learn more about my education and research, please visit my personal website at andrewjdennhardt.weebly.com/.

OB: Congratulations on your recent graduation! Do you have any conservation heroes?

AD: My conservation heroine is Rachel Carson, and my conservation hero is Aldo Leopold because each of them was an excellent communicator during their time. Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac is one of my favorite books, especially because many of its stories remind me of my childhood while growing up on a small farm in the Midwest. Carson’s Silent Spring is also near and dear to me because, in addition to another great book, I also learned that preliminary research on birds conducted at my alma mater, Michigan State University, helped form the basis of Carson’s rallying cry for conservation action against the widespread use of pollutants like DDT in the United States and elsewhere. It is Leopold’s and Carson’s abilities to communicate well, so captivatingly, that regularly inspire me to be a better communicator, especially in my new role as a Service biologist. Of Carson: “Those who dwell, as scientists or laymen, among the beauties and mysteries of the earth, are never alone or weary of life,” and of Leopold: “When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.” Well said, the both of you.

OB: Rachel Carson and Aldo Leopold are two of my conservation heroes as well. It’s amazing that their work and dedication continue to inspire so many generations of conservation stewards! Is there a particular project from your career or schooling that makes you really proud?

AD: My master’s research was quite the challenge in its day. For the first time in my education, I was asked to code computer programs, particularly those that would predict the migration patterns of a rare soaring raptor in response to updrafts in the environment. Raising the stakes, I was also tasked with collating historic records on sightings of these rare birds across a large geographic region, over many years, to later integrate with outputs from my migration simulations. Together, these data would be used to generate population abundance estimates for golden eagles in the study region, and with the help of several mentors and collaborators, I found a way to make our ambitious goals become realized. After later witnessing the scientific community challenge, distribute, and then adapt my work for use in other geographic regions, I have never felt so proud of a personal accomplishment before. Later, population estimates from this work informed guidance documents for conserving golden eagles across North America—guidance documents drafted by fellow colleagues of the Service in the Migratory Birds program Birds. To see my research inform management decisions, that was certainly a peak achievement of my early career, and I will always cherish such moments in my memory.

OB: That definitely sounds like an ambitious and challenging project! I’m glad to hear you’re your hard work paid off and is still informing management decisions! When you’re not out working hard in the field, how do you like to spend your free time?

AD: In my free time, I enjoy participating in sports like hunting, fishing, hiking, football, biking, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, softball, and basketball. Given my love of raptors and other birds, I also like to get out and observe our feathered friends from time to time, especially with my spouse, Amanda. We also enjoy traveling to new wild places together, including our national wildlife refuges, forests, and parks. On rarer occasions, we like to hit the town and sing some karaoke as well. And at great risk of attracting surprise weekend visitors or catering orders, occasionally, I also like to barbecue various meats with my smoker at home.

OB: That’s quite the list! I’m sure your days are never boring! Lastly, do you have a hidden talent? If so, what is it?

AD: I am not ashamed to admit that I like to impersonate animal sounds and sometimes other people’s voices, especially those of friends and family. I also like to think that I am pretty good at it, depending on who or what is the subject of my flattering imitations. Perhaps the best proof of my skills in this area is that several years ago, I was told by my supervisors at the time that one of the main reasons they had hired me for one of the technician positions at our consulting company was because a reference from the U.S. Forest Service had told them that I was “an excellent replicator of owl calls.” Needless to say, I had a real hoot that summer surveying the California Redwood Coast for northern spotted owls, and I often did not use the electronic callers to help locate them. I never thought that I would ever earn a job with my imitation skills, but those were the good ol’ days, reminders of a much simpler time since fewer computer models and video conferences were involved back then.

OB: Wow, that’s super impressive! I’m looking forward to hearing your impersonations. Thanks Andrew!

Paranapiacaba: Origem: Wikipédia, a enciclopédia livre.

No União Lira Serrano eram exibidos filmes, shows musicais e realizados bailes temáticos.

Museu do funicular:

Museu do castelo:

A planta dessas casas possui

Architecture in Vienna

Vienna's 2,000-year history is present in a unique density in the cityscape. The layout of the center dates back to the Roman city and medieval road network. Romanesque and Gothic churches characterize the streets and squares as well as palaces and mansions of the baroque city of residence. The ring road is an expression of the modern city of the 19th century, in the 20th century extensive housing developments set accents in the outer districts. Currently, large-scale urban development measures are implemented; distinctive buildings of international star architects complement the silhouette of the city.

Due to its function as residence of the emperor and European power center, Vienna for centuries stood in the focus of international attention, but it was well aware of that too. As a result, developed an outstanding building culture, and still today on a worldwide scale only a few cities can come up with a comparable density of high-quality architecture. For several years now, Vienna has increased its efforts to connect with its historical highlights and is drawing attention to itself with some spectacular new buildings. The fastest growing city in the German-speaking world today most of all in residential construction is setting standards. Constants of the Viennese architecture are respect for existing structures, the palpability of historical layers and the dialogue between old and new.

Culmination of medieval architecture: the Stephansdom

The oldest architectural landmark of the city is St. Stephen's Cathedral. Under the rule of the Habsburgs, defining the face of the city from the late 13th century until 1918 in a decisive way, the cathedral was upgraded into the sacral monument of the political ambitions of the ruling house. The 1433 completed, 137 meters high southern tower, by the Viennese people affectionately named "Steffl", is a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture in Europe. For decades he was the tallest stone structure in Europe, until today he is the undisputed center of the city.

The baroque residence

Vienna's ascension into the ranks of the great European capitals began in Baroque. Among the most important architects are Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. Outside the city walls arose a chain of summer palaces, including the garden Palais Schwarzenberg (1697-1704) as well as the Upper and Lower Belvedere of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1714-22). Among the most important city palaces are the Winter Palace of Prince Eugene (1695-1724, now a branch of the Belvedere) and the Palais Daun-Kinsky (auction house in Kinsky 1713-19). The emperor himself the Hofburg had complemented by buildings such as the Imperial Library (1722-26) and the Winter Riding School (1729-34). More important, however, for the Habsburgs was the foundation of churches and monasteries. Thus arose before the city walls Fischer von Erlach's Karlskirche (1714-39), which with its formal and thematic complex show façade belongs to the major works of European Baroque. In colored interior rooms like that of St. Peter's Church (1701-22), the contemporary efforts for the synthesis of architecture, painting and sculpture becomes visible.

Upgrading into metropolis: the ring road time (Ringstraßenzeit)

Since the Baroque, reflections on extension of the hopelessly overcrowed city were made, but only Emperor Franz Joseph ordered in 1857 the demolition of the fortifications and the connection of the inner city with the suburbs. 1865, the Ring Road was opened. It is as the most important boulevard of Europe an architectural and in terms of urban development achievement of the highest rank. The original building structure is almost completely preserved and thus conveys the authentic image of a metropolis of the 19th century. The public representational buildings speak, reflecting accurately the historicism, by their style: The Greek Antique forms of Theophil Hansen's Parliament (1871-83) stood for democracy, the Renaissance of the by Heinrich Ferstel built University (1873-84) for the flourishing of humanism, the Gothic of the Town Hall (1872-83) by Friedrich Schmidt for the medieval civic pride.

Dominating remained the buildings of the imperial family: Eduard van der Nüll's and August Sicardsburg's Opera House (1863-69), Gottfried Semper's and Carl Hasenauer's Burgtheater (1874-88), their Museum of Art History and Museum of Natural History (1871-91) and the Neue (New) Hofburg (1881-1918 ). At the same time the ring road was the preferred residential area of mostly Jewish haute bourgeoisie. With luxurious palaces the families Ephrussi, Epstein or Todesco made it clear that they had taken over the cultural leadership role in Viennese society. In the framework of the World Exhibition of 1873, the new Vienna presented itself an international audience. At the ring road many hotels were opened, among them the Hotel Imperial and today's Palais Hansen Kempinski.

Laboratory of modernity: Vienna around 1900

Otto Wagner's Postal Savings Bank (1903-06) was one of the last buildings in the Ring road area Otto Wagner's Postal Savings Bank (1903-06), which with it façade, liberated of ornament, and only decorated with "functional" aluminum buttons and the glass banking hall now is one of the icons of modern architecture. Like no other stood Otto Wagner for the dawn into the 20th century: His Metropolitan Railway buildings made the public transport of the city a topic of architecture, the church of the Psychiatric hospital at Steinhofgründe (1904-07) is considered the first modern church.

With his consistent focus on the function of a building ("Something impractical can not be beautiful"), Wagner marked a whole generation of architects and made Vienna the laboratory of modernity: in addition to Joseph Maria Olbrich, the builder of the Secession (1897-98) and Josef Hoffmann, the architect of the at the western outskirts located Purkersdorf Sanatorium (1904) and founder of the Vienna Workshop (Wiener Werkstätte, 1903) is mainly to mention Adolf Loos, with the Loos House at the square Michaelerplatz (1909-11) making architectural history. The extravagant marble cladding of the business zone stands in maximal contrast, derived from the building function, to the unadorned facade above, whereby its "nudity" became even more obvious - a provocation, as well as his culture-critical texts ("Ornament and Crime"), with which he had greatest impact on the architecture of the 20th century. Public contracts Loos remained denied. His major works therefore include villas, apartment facilities and premises as the still in original state preserved Tailor salon Knize at Graben (1910-13) and the restored Loos Bar (1908-09) near the Kärntner Straße (passageway Kärntner Durchgang).

Between the Wars: International Modern Age and social housing

After the collapse of the monarchy in 1918, Vienna became capital of the newly formed small country of Austria. In the heart of the city, the architects Theiss & Jaksch built 1931-32 the first skyscraper in Vienna as an exclusive residential address (Herrengasse - alley 6-8). To combat the housing shortage for the general population, the social democratic city government in a globally unique building program within a few years 60,000 apartments in hundreds of apartment buildings throughout the city area had built, including the famous Karl Marx-Hof by Karl Ehn (1925-30). An alternative to the multi-storey buildings with the 1932 opened International Werkbundsiedlung was presented, which was attended by 31 architects from Austria, Germany, France, Holland and the USA and showed models for affordable housing in greenfield areas. With buildings of Adolf Loos, André Lurçat, Richard Neutra, Gerrit Rietveld, the Werkbundsiedlung, which currently is being restored at great expense, is one of the most important documents of modern architecture in Austria.

Modernism was also expressed in significant Villa buildings: The House Beer (1929-31) by Josef Frank exemplifies the refined Wiener living culture of the interwar period, while the house Stonborough-Wittgenstein (1926-28, today Bulgarian Cultural Institute), built by the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein together with the architect Paul Engelmann for his sister Margarete, by its aesthetic radicalism and mathematical rigor represents a special case within contemporary architecture.

Expulsion, war and reconstruction

After the "Anschluss (Annexation)" to the German Reich in 1938, numerous Jewish builders, architects (female and male ones), who had been largely responsible for the high level of Viennese architecture, have been expelled from Austria. During the Nazi era, Vienna remained largely unaffected by structural transformations, apart from the six flak towers built for air defense of Friedrich Tamms (1942-45), made of solid reinforced concrete which today are present as memorials in the cityscape.

The years after the end of World War II were characterized by the reconstruction of the by bombs heavily damaged city. The architecture of those times was marked by aesthetic pragmatism, but also by the attempt to connect with the period before 1938 and pick up on current international trends. Among the most important buildings of the 1950s are Roland Rainer's City Hall (1952-58), the by Oswald Haerdtl erected Wien Museum at Karlsplatz (1954-59) and the 21er Haus of Karl Schwanzer (1958-62).

The youngsters come

Since the 1960s, a young generation was looking for alternatives to the moderate modernism of the reconstruction years. With visionary designs, conceptual, experimental and above all temporary architectures, interventions and installations, Raimund Abraham, Günther Domenig, Eilfried Huth, Hans Hollein, Walter Pichler and the groups Coop Himmelb(l)au, Haus-Rucker-Co and Missing Link rapidly got international attention. Although for the time being it was more designed than built, was the influence on the postmodern and deconstructivist trends of the 1970s and 1980s also outside Austria great. Hollein's futuristic "Retti" candle shop at Charcoal Market/Kohlmarkt (1964-65) and Domenig's biomorphic building of the Central Savings Bank in Favoriten (10th district of Vienna - 1975-79) are among the earliest examples, later Hollein's Haas-Haus (1985-90), the loft conversion Falkestraße (1987/88) by Coop Himmelb(l)au or Domenig's T Center (2002-04) were added. Especially Domenig, Hollein, Coop Himmelb(l)au and the architects Ortner & Ortner (ancient members of Haus-Rucker-Co) by orders from abroad the new Austrian and Viennese architecture made a fixed international concept.

MuseumQuarter and Gasometer

Since the 1980s, the focus of building in Vienna lies on the compaction of the historic urban fabric that now as urban habitat of high quality no longer is put in question. Among the internationally best known projects is the by Ortner & Ortner planned MuseumsQuartier in the former imperial stables (competition 1987, 1998-2001), which with institutions such as the MUMOK - Museum of Modern Art Foundation Ludwig, the Leopold Museum, the Kunsthalle Wien, the Architecture Center Vienna and the Zoom Children's Museum on a wordwide scale is under the largest cultural complexes. After controversies in the planning phase, here an architectural compromise between old and new has been achieved at the end, whose success as an urban stage with four million visitors (2012) is overwhelming.

The dialogue between old and new, which has to stand on the agenda of building culture of a city that is so strongly influenced by history, also features the reconstruction of the Gasometer in Simmering by Coop Himmelb(l)au, Wilhelm Holzbauer, Jean Nouvel and Manfred Wehdorn (1999-2001). Here was not only created new housing, but also a historical industrial monument reinterpreted into a signal in the urban development area.

New Neighborhood

In recent years, the major railway stations and their surroundings moved into the focus of planning. Here not only necessary infrastructural measures were taken, but at the same time opened up spacious inner-city residential areas and business districts. Among the prestigious projects are included the construction of the new Vienna Central Station, started in 2010 with the surrounding office towers of the Quartier Belvedere and the residential and school buildings of the Midsummer quarter (Sonnwendviertel). Europe's largest wooden tower invites here for a spectacular view to the construction site and the entire city. On the site of the former North Station are currently being built 10,000 homes and 20,000 jobs, on that of the Aspangbahn station is being built at Europe's greatest Passive House settlement "Euro Gate", the area of the North Western Railway Station is expected to be developed from 2020 for living and working. The largest currently under construction residential project but can be found in the north-eastern outskirts, where in Seaside Town Aspern till 2028 living and working space for 40,000 people will be created.

In one of the "green lungs" of Vienna, the Prater, 2013, the WU campus was opened for the largest University of Economics of Europe. Around the central square spectacular buildings of an international architect team from Great Britain, Japan, Spain and Austria are gathered that seem to lead a sometimes very loud conversation about the status quo of contemporary architecture (Hitoshi Abe, BUSarchitektur, Peter Cook, Zaha Hadid, NO MAD Arquitectos, Carme Pinós).

Flying high

International is also the number of architects who have inscribed themselves in the last few years with high-rise buildings in the skyline of Vienna and make St. Stephen's a not always unproblematic competition. Visible from afar is Massimiliano Fuksas' 138 and 127 meters high elegant Twin Tower at Wienerberg (1999-2001). The monolithic, 75-meter-high tower of the Hotel Sofitel at the Danube Canal by Jean Nouvel (2007-10), on the other hand, reacts to the particular urban situation and stages in its top floor new perspectives to the historical center on the other side.

Also at the water stands Dominique Perrault's DC Tower (2010-13) in the Danube City - those high-rise city, in which since the start of construction in 1996, the expansion of the city north of the Danube is condensed symbolically. Even in this environment, the slim and at the same time striking vertically folded tower of Perrault is beyond all known dimensions; from its Sky Bar, from spring 2014 on you are able to enjoy the highest view of Vienna. With 250 meters, the tower is the tallest building of Austria and almost twice as high as the St. Stephen's Cathedral. Vienna, thus, has acquired a new architectural landmark which cannot be overlooked - whether it also has the potential to become a landmark of the new Vienna, only time will tell. The architectural history of Vienna, where European history is presence and new buildings enter into an exciting and not always conflict-free dialogue with a great and outstanding architectural heritage, in any case has yet to offer exciting chapters.

I love this bay, its a beautiful tranquil place, however after reading news reports on a court judgement 13/7/2018 forcing the fisher men to remove their boats within 28 days it saddened me, hence I made a trip today Friday 13th July 2018 to capture the views and scenery before this unpopular ruling is implemented, what a sad situation indeed, I have included the news report on the legal wrangle at the end of this description.

Cove is a 20 minute drive from my home in Aberdeen Scotland, it was a pleasure to visit today and capture the tranquility that it presented.

Scattered across the harbour are stones with various sealife characters carved into them.

Cove Bay is a suburb on the south-east edge of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Today Cove is home to over 7000 people. It is a popular residential location owing to its extremely village-like status.

It is a quiet suburb just at the edge of the City and in 2015 won the Silver award for Scotland in bloom. Nearby Altens and Tullos Industrial Estates, affording ample employment opportunities.

History

Cove Bay is situated to the east of the ancient Causey Mounth, which road was built on high ground to make passable this only available medieval route from coastal points south from Stonehaven to Aberdeen.

This ancient trackway specifically connected the River Dee crossing (where the Bridge of Dee is located) via Portlethen Moss, Muchalls Castle and Stonehaven to the south.

The route was that taken by William Keith, 7th Earl Marischal and the Marquess of Montrose, who led a Covenanter army of 9000 men in the battle of the Civil War in 1639.

Cove Bay was a village in the extreme north-east corner of Kincardine, governed from Stonehaven, until 1975, when it was added to the City of Aberdeen. Though simply referred to as Cove, in the 19th and early 20th centuries it was known as The Cove, becoming Cove Bay around 1912.

Industry

Cove has been noted for industries such as granite, which was quarried in several locations to the south of the village. Owing to its close-grained texture, Cove granite was one of the hardest in north-east Scotland and proved highly resistant to frost, making it ideal for causeway stones used in the construction of roads. It was widely exported to cities in England, including Billingsgate Market in London.

Fishing

The village itself sprung up around the fishing industry, with the boats berthed on a shingle beach, a gap in the rocks that afforded a natural harbour. During this time, it is estimated that approximately 300 people lived in the area. In the mid 19th century the fishing was at its height, which, over years, has included cod, haddock, salmon, herring and shellfish. The piers and breakwater were constructed in 1878. At the end of World War I the fishing began to decline. At present only a couple of boats pursue shellfish on a part-time basis.

Between 1894 and 1937, Cove also housed a fishmeal factory, the Aberdeen Fish Meal Factory, which was located at the edge of the cliffs. It produced quality manure which was exported to both Europe and America. It became locally known as "the stinker" because of the processing odour, which was highlighted by the Aberdeen entertainer Harry Gordon in a parody entitled A Song of Cove.

Current tenants at the site include National Oilwell Varco (NOV), Driving Standards Agency and Hydrasun. A Community football pitch is also inlcluded within the development.

Cove Academy

Plans for a secondary school in Cove have now been approved and will be situated alongside Wellington Road. It is thought that once this is built pupils from Cove, Torry as well as Kincorth will attend this school.

The Legal Wrangle - Landowner V Fishermen - Judgement 13/7/18

Fishermen told to move boats from Cove Bay after legal dispute

Fishermen have been told to move their boats from an Aberdeen bay after a long-running dispute.

Several fishermen were fighting an eviction order on behalf of landowner Pralhad Kolhe at Cove Bay, where they had been fishing for many years.

In a written judgement, a sheriff has given them 28 days to move their boats and equipment from Mr Kolhe's land.

However, Sheriff Andrew Miller also ordered the removal of obstructions to vehicular access onto the pier.

The case was heard at Aberdeen Sheriff Court earlier this year.

One of the fisherman, Jim Adam, told a court he was "stunned" to receive a legal letter telling him to remove his boat.

He had been fishing from Cove Bay since 1966.

'We were hopeful'

The first day of the hearing heard the letter said the landowner, who lives in a house overlooking the harbour, was unable to make use of his land for amenity purposes and that he did not wish Mr Adam's vessel, or any other vessel, on his land.

In the ruling, Sheriff Miller also gave Mr Kolhe 28 days to remove the obstructions to vehicle access to the pier.

Mr Adam told BBC Scotland: "We are disappointed, we were hopeful.

"The good news is at least for the recreational folks they have got vehicle access."

The blueprint image is the cover of the vision document, along with the nine team names charged with implementation the Conserving the Future vision document's 24 recommendations.

The Isdera Imperator 108i was a low-volume German supercar produced from 1984 to 1993. The Imperator 108i was born out of the Mercedes-Benz CW311 concept car from 1978. Eberhard Schulz, who formerly worked as a design engineer for Mercedes-Benz, headed an engineering company that designed the CW311 concept. With no interest in putting the CW311 into production itself, Mercedes-Benz allowed Schulz for produce the vehicle under his own brand, Isdera.[1]

Implementing a fiberglass body upon a tubular steel spaceframe, the Isdera Imperator 108i was comparable to the Lamborghinis of its day. The original Imperator 108i featured 5.0 L (5,000 cc) Mercedes-Benz M117 V8 engine which gave the vehicle a top speed of 176 mph (283 km/h) and an acceleration of 0-60 mi (97 km) in 5.0 seconds. As Mercedes-Benz developed more powerful V8 engines, they were used in the Imperator 108i. Later engines included a 5.6 L (5,600 cc) Mercedes-Benz M117 V8, a 5.6 L (5,600 cc) AMG V8 and a 6.0 L (6,000 cc) AMG V8, with both AMG engines featuring advanced 32-valve cylinder heads.[1]

Unusually, the Imperator 108i featured a rear-view periscope, creating a bulge on the roof. It also featured gullwing doors

A.H. Gregg was a prominent business man in Farmer Village, now called Interlaken, NY. They originally produced agriculture machinery, and later moved to Trumansburg, NY and established Gregg Iron Works. The principle article of manufacture was the Meadow King Mower, but other implements were added as the capacity of the works increased as the demand warranted. The Osborn Sulky Plow, Sharpe Horse Rake, Morse Horse Rake, King of the Lawn and Young America Lawn Mowers, and later, reaping machines and twine binders were built to quite an extent. The annual out- put for several years was in the neighborhood of 2,000 mowers, 500 reapers, 1,500 rakes, 1,500 lawn mowers, 500 sulky plows, besides hand plows and miscellaneous tools.

This rare pass is signed on front by Gregg, with information on back. There is an embossed stamp on the signature portion as well. In good condition with some wear and light soiling. International Cotton Exposition (I.C.E) was a World's Fair held in Atlanta, Georgia from October 5 to December 3 of 1881. h The location was along the Western & Atlantic Railroad tracks near the present day King Plow development. It planned to show the progress made since the city's destruction during the Battle of Atlanta and new developments in cotton production.

Placed a short train ride from downtown, it was designed so that the largest building could later be used as a cotton mill. A quarter of a million people attended generating between $220,000 and $250,000 in receipts split evenly between sales and gate receipts.

Founding

The idea of holding such an exhibition in the South was first suggested by Edward Atkinson of york who in August 1880 wrote a letter to a New York journal discussing the great waste incident to the methods then in use in the gathering and handling of the cotton crop and advised the exhibition to bring all of those interested in the production of this great Southern staple for the purpose of improvement. The Atlanta Constitution republished and urged the importance of some action in regard thereto. A few weeks after the publication of this letter it was announced that Mr. Atkinson was about to make a Southern trip for the purpose of putting the suggestion in form. Mr. H. I. Kimball being impressed with the importance of the enterprise and personally acquainted with Mr. Atkinson, invited him to Atlanta to address the people on the subject. This invitation Mr. Atkinson accepted, and at the solicitation of many prominent citizens of Atlanta he delivered, on October 28, 1880, an address in the senate chamber, in which he advocated Atlanta as the proper place in which to hold a cotton exhibition, such as would result in devising improved methods in the cultivation of the cotton as well as to be a stimulus to the entire industrial development of this section.

Early that november, James W. Nagle and J. W. Ryckman came to Atlanta to ascertain what action the citizens proposed to take in the matter. At their suggestion several preliminary meetings were held. A committee consisting of Governor A.H. Colquitt, Mayor W.L. Calhoun, ex-Governor R.B. Bullock and J.W. Ryckman was appointed to prepare a plan for preliminary organization, which resulted in the formation of such an organization and the election of Senator Joseph E. Brown, president; S.M. Inman, treasurer and Ryckman, secretary.

[edit] Incorporation

In February 1881, the chamber of commerce proposed and a corporation was organized under the general law, and a charter was obtained from the court. The Atlanta incorporators were those above plus R.F. Maddox, Benjamin E. Crane, Evan P. Howell, M.C. Kiser, Robert J. Lowry, Sidney Root, Campbell Wallace, J.F. Cummings, W.P. Inman, J.C. Peck, L.P. Grant, W.A. Moore, G.J. Foreacre, Richard Peters and E.P. Chamberlin. Associated with them were citizens of several other counties in Georigia and of the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana, Missouri, Massachusetts, New York, Maine, Rhode Island and of London, England. Thus equipped the new enterprise commenced active operations.

At first it was only contemplated that the exposition should be confined to cotton and all pertaining thereto, in its culture, transportation, manufacture, etc. The capital stock of the corporation was originally fixed at $100,000 in shares of $100. As the work advanced, however, and as the country became interested in the subject, it was decided to open its doors for the admission of all products from every section, and the capital stock was therefore to $200,000. H.I Kimball was elected chairman of the 25 member executive committee whose mission was to raise the money.

It was believed if Atlanta subscribed one-third the amount required, other cities interested in the succedss of the enterprise would contribute the balance. A canvass of the city was made, and in one day the amount proportioned to Atlanta was secured. Mr. Kimball was authorized to visit Northern cities and endeavor to interest them in the undertaking. He visited New York and secured subscriptions to two hundred and fifty-three shares of stock ($25,300); Boston took sixty shares; Baltimore, forty-eight; Norfolk, VA buying twenty-five; Philadelphia, forty-three; Cincinnati, seventy-nine. The gratifying result of Mr. Kimball's work in the North and the apparent interest manifested by the whole country caused the executive committee to take immediate steps to put the whole work of organizing and conducting the enterprise in hand. Kimball was named director-general and CEO.

[edit] Construction begins

Contemporary rendering of the 1881 Exposition

Oglethorpe Park was selected as the site of the exposition. It belonged to the city and was located two and one half miles northwest from the railroad depot, and on the line of the Western & Atlantic Railroad. This park was originally laid out and improved under the direction of Mr. Kimball, in 1870 for the use of agricultural fairs, but the work of adapting the grounds and erecting the necessary buildings for the exposition was not an easy task. The work was begun under Mr. Kimball's direction and rapidly pushed to completion and made ready in ample time for the opening of the exposition.

The main building was constructed after a general model of a cotton factory, as suggested by Mr. Atkinson, the form being a Greek cross, the transept nearly half the length, the agricultural and carriage annexes extending along the southern side, and the mineral and woods department forming an annex at the extreme western end of the building. Its extreme length was seven hundred and twenty feet, the length of the transport four hundred feet, and the width of the arms ninety-six feet. The dimensions of the remaining principal buildings were as follows:

Railroad building, 200x100 fee

Railroad annexes, 40x60 and 40x100 feet

Agricultural implement building 96x288 feet

Carriage annex, 96x212 feet

Art and industry building, 520x60 feet

Judge's hall, 90x120 feet

Horticultural hall, 40x80 feet

Restaurant, 100x200 feet

There were several other buildings, as the Florida building, press pavilion, police headquarters, etc, and quite a number of individuals or collective exhibitors erected buildings for themselves.

[edit] Opening

The exposition was opened on October 5, 1881 and the occasion formed a memorable day in the history of Atlanta. The event was attended by many governors, senators and congressmen and addresses were made by Kimball, Governor Colquitt, North Carolina Senator Z.B. Vance and Indiana Senator D.W. Voorhees.

The exposition was a success in every way. The entire number of exhibits was 1,113 of which the Southern States contributed more than half; New England and Middle States, 341; Western States, 138; foreign, 7. The gross receipts were $262,513, and the total disbursements $258,475. The average daily attendance was 3,816 for the seventy-six days it was open. The largest number of admissions on any one day occurred on December 7th, Planters' Day, when there were 10,293.

The Exposition Cotton Mill was opened on the site in 1882 and remained in operation until 1969.[1]

Water & Light at Sassi Mazar Balochistan May30, 2015

SUN SHINES IN THE NIGHT

Sassi punnu mausoleum got Solar Energy

Every year thousands of peoples from various parts of Sindh, Baluchistan and Punjab gather at the shrine of Sassi and Punnu in Singher village to attend a 3 days carnival. Singher village is , 52 Kilometers away from Hub town. Singher means chain, as the village is surrounded by the chain of hills where it is believed that Sassi and Punnu were buried under a landslide.

Before the monsoon a carnival organizing committee receives donation from the Baloch tribal chiefs of Sindh and Balochistan to bear the expenditures of the event. Collected funds are mostly used for providing food, water and accommodation to all the devotees there. Sufi Faqirs (singers) from Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab travel to perform songs on the occasion to pay homage to Sassi Punnu, the popular tragic romance of Sindh and Balochistan. Besides folk songs, a traditional Sindhi game malakhro similar to Japanese wrestling sumo also attracts a large number of the people to come there.

Lands from mountains with old graves scattered in the area and rainy water ways are quite difficult to cross for the travellers. Despite this, devotees, males and females, travel long distance to visit the site the entire year. For the local people, camel is the only means of transport and people gather there during the occasion.

There is only one well, which is useful for the communities otherwise the entire area underground water level is unsafe for human consumption. In case the area receives monsoon rains the people use rainy water from ponds.

For the benefit of peoples living in surroundings as well as devotees who visit during carnival and over the year, Masood Lohar, country Manager UNDP, GEF small grant program decided to use solar energy for providing clean and safe water and lighting on the mausoleum.

On 30th May 2015, Shaan Technologies Private Limited installed a 3 HP Solar Powered pump on a 250 ft deep well that is located near the tomb. Operating on a 3 kilowatt solar panel bank this pump provide 30 Gallon water per minutes & eliminates requirement of diesel generator operated pump that organizing committee previously used to supply water during the festival.

Now solar pump serves as a continuous source of clean water without any additional cost. A water tank is provided to store pumped water. This tank helped as a 24 hours ready source of water for the local people.

In addition to that 2 solar powered floodlights were also installed in front yard of tomb. These 14 watt LED lights runs on a 35 watt solar panel that provide sufficient power to run LED lamps up to 12 hours. Dusk to Dawn photo sensors is also used in the system that automatically turns on the light just before the sunset and turns off at dawn. This project was financed by the UNDP GEF Small grant program. Lodhie foundation contributed 10% cost of the project under its poverty alleviation initiative.

Folktale of Sassi & Punnu

Sassi Punnu is a famous folktale of love told in the length and breadth of Sindh, Pakistan. The story is about a faithful wife who is ready to undergo all kinds of troubles that would come her way while seeking her beloved husband who was separated from her by the rivals

Sassi was the daughter of a Brahman Hindu Rajah from Rohri . Upon Sassui's birth, astrologers predicted that she was a curse for the royal family’s prestige. The Raja ordered that the child be put in a wooden box and thrown in the Sindhu, present day’s river Indus. However, she was saved by a washer-man belonging to Bhanbhor, near Gharo district, Thatta . The washer-man raised her as his own daughter.

When Sassui became a young girl, she was as beautiful as the fairies of heaven. Stories of her beauty reached Punhun a prince from Kech Makran Balochistan and he became desperate to meet Sassi. The handsome young Prince therefore travelled to Bhambore. He sent his clothes to Sassi's father (a washerman) so that he could catch a glimpse of Sassi. When he visited the washerman's house, they fell in love at first sight. Sassui's father was dispirited, hoping that Sassi would marry a washerman and no one else. He asked Punnhun to prove that he was worthy of Sassui by passing the test as a washerman. Punnhun agreed to prove his love. While washing, he tore all the clothes as, being a prince, he had never washed any clothes; he thus failed the agreement. But before he returned those clothes, he hid gold coins in the pockets of all the clothes, hoping this would keep the villagers quiet. The trick worked, and Sassui's father agreed to the marriage.

At last Punnu (Punhoon) married her. However, his father, Ari, the King of Ketch, did not like his son getting married to a low-caste girl, so he instructed his other sons to go to Bhanbhor and bring back Punnu at any cost. They visited Punnu as his guests and during the night they intoxicated him and his wife. Later, they put their brother on one of the camels and left. When Sassi woke up in the morning, she was shocked to find Punnu missing and all his brothers gone. She understood their trickery. She left Bhambhor immediately to Kech Makran on foot in search of him. The Kech Makran is located along the Makran Coastal Highway in Baluchistan, Pakistan.

After crossing Pab Mountain, she reached the Harho range. She could not proceed further when her path was blocked by the Phor River. So she started retracing her steps. Soon she was accosted by a beastly goatherd who intended to molest her. Sassi prayed to God for protection. Immediately the ground below her feet started caving in like quicksand and she disappeared within seconds. Seeing the miracle, the goatherd repented sincerely, and to make amends for his misconduct, he made a grave in the site and became its custodian.

Punnu found no peace of mind at Kech. He languished and soon became an invalid. Under the circumstances, his father allowed him to return to Bhambhor.

During his return journey, Punnu happened to pass by the site where Sassi had met her death. When the goatherd came to know his story, he told him as to what had happened to Sassi. Punnu was beside himself on hearing the horrible news.

He prayed to God to unite him with Sassi. Again the ground became quicksand and he soon disappeared into the bowels of the earth. So came to an end the tragic love story of Sassi and Punnu. The legendary grave still exists in this valley.

The famous Sufi saint and poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai sings this historic tale in his sufi poetry “Shah jo Risalo” as an example of eternal love and union with Divine.

Sassi’s resting place is said to be about 45 miles away in the Pub range to the west of Karachi. A local man of some importance constructed a simple mausoleum in 1980 over the joint grave of Sassi and Punnu. It is often visited by tourists.

Astfel, a simțit că și-a găsit vocația.

Provocările tinerilor într-o lume a schimbărilor

They've Ruined It. Millions of dollars in Town revenue wiped out ? Our great Festival is no longer even recognizable ? How could anyone take a world class event and turn it into something stupid ? New President Erica Gillis has got to be the worst ever ?

ABF 2022,

Following a 2 year absence due to Covi,, the 2022 Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival. (and Parade) will be held as per usual this year.. But, unfortunately the Queen Annapolisa and Apple Blossom Princess competition will have to be postponed until next year due to time constraints.

ABF 2022 :

* Update 2022 Update * This year's ABF won't be same as others ? For the first time in its long illustrious history, this years ABF will be missing the better half of the Festival, that being the coveted Queen Annapolisa and Apple Blossom Princess competition and the prestigious coronation crowning ceremony in Wolfville ? All are to be postponed ? Bad news indeed for aspiring young contestants, for our local communities, for the Festival itself, and for patrons and sponsors. Perhaps the current board of Directors should focus more attention on their job of actually holding the event rather than arguing about inclusion and entrance ? The Valley looks forward to next year's pageant ? Unfortunately. it seems that this year's directors are not prepared to make the necessary expenditures needed to bring in some quality outside guest performers for the Friday night concert ( (or for a big-name Saturday night concert event) as has always been the case in previous years when bands like Eddy's Basement, or the many various guest Tribute Bands, or artists like the Barra McNiels, K D Lang, Michelle Wright, and others were brought in to entertain the crowd ?

It seems this year ABF Officials choose to emphasize the word 'free' in advertisements ? The ABF events they are advertising as free have always been free ? Is this promotion or the pointing out of the 'free' idea mean there are future plans to begin charging for events that have always been free in the past such as Grand Street Parade or the Friday night Memorial Park entertainment and Fireworks ? It seems more likely that if they were to ever repeat this year's lacklustre bare minimal effort they might have to start paying patrons to attend ?

ABF 2023 :

Shocking news from ABF,

* There's been a stunning development at ABF. *

Apparently in a new younger generation there are those who harbor resentment towards our nations history, for English colonialism, and even for the Monarchy ? Other minority groups have voiced discontent over the diversity and inclusion issue ? And so it seems that the current ABF Board of Directors has listened to the concerns and complaints of a few small minority groups while apparently ignoring and excluding the overwhelming majority of Valley residents ? And it appears that this current Board of Directors chose to resolve discontent by simply moving to implement and execute the nuclear option and final solution ? And therefore after a highly successful lengthy run of 87 consecutive years in a row, the highly anticipated, very popular, family oriented, inclusive and diverse, multi village Queen Annapolisa and Apple Blossom Princess Pageant along with the prestigious Royal Coronation crowning ceremonies held in Wolfville have all been terminated forever by this current board of Directors ?

.

-----------------------It's The End of an Era-----------------------------

"We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep."

Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival 2023 - ABF Board of Directors have announced they are making drastic new changes in format and making more devastating cut-backs to the annual People's Festival ? Recent concerns over ceremony, symbolism, monarchy and past colonialism, along with the ongoing inclusion and diversity issue relative to the Queen Annapolisa contest, as well as the current Trudeau Liberal political environment in Canada, may have all influenced a new generation of ABF Officials to radically update the historic Queen Annapolisa and Apple Blossom Princess pageants in order to bring the Valley up to modern standards that they believe more relevant to current times ? And so it seems that Directors must have held an extremely private 'think tank' and without consideration, consultation, or bothering to invite or gain approval from long time participating Valley communities, Officials must have decided that rather than trouble themselves any further with the issue, why not just take the easy way out and simply get rid of this history ? And so it seems that a decision must have been made, in a very private way, to enforce the life ending final solution ? And so, as of 2023 the iconic 87 year old Apple Blossom Princess contest and pageant is to be shut down and terminated forever ? This act has been carried out without public input, inclusion, involvement, attendance or approval, and now one of the longest running, popular, highly anticipated, inclusive and diverse family events to ever benefit the Valley is over ?

This cold act of finality will end the 88 year reign of her royal Heinous Queen Annapolisa and it will terminate all further participation of the 7 to 10 Apple Blossom Princess contestants and child attendants representing 7 to 10 local Valley communities ? It also ends appearances by the beautiful hand crafted award winning Princess floats that are the focal highlight of Grand Street Parade and will signal the end of the ultra glamorous Queen and Ladies-in-waiting Crowning ceremonies gala that is held and televised each year from Acadia University in Wolfville ? This will end the popular community Princess Tea events, the Royal Party visitations to local Schools, hospitals and old folks homes that were so welcome and appreciated by Students, Seniors, shut-ins and the disabled ? And this means the end of Royal Party appearances at the Kentville Children's Parade, the Memorial Park Friday night open air Rock concert and fireworks, and Royal party attendances at many other events held annually throughout the Valley and Province ?

It appears now that current ABF Officials led by President Logan Morse along with Kentville town rep Lindsey Young not only interrupted the Pageant in 2022 when they temporarily postponed it, but have now in 2023 moved to terminate the prestigious event forever explaining that their decision was made to improve, include, modernize and evolve the fampus pageant ? This final act of termination ends almost 90 years of royal pageantry and also leaves a huge gap in the Festival itself ? It also negatively affects the nearby Valley communities who participate and always enter contestants in the Pageant ? The end of this important multiple community event and the taking away of the better half and Star of the Apple Blossom Festival brings forth the question of what replacement is planned, and what are local towns and villages that always play a major role in both the Queen and Princess competition suppose to do now ? And what about Valley youth and childhood dreams of one day becoming a child attendant or an Apple Blossom Princess or even a Queen ?

You have to marvel at the level of disrespect shown by these new generation Officials who have appointed themselves as the ones that will end the Pageant and then think that Valley residents are stupid enough to believe that by cancelling and taking away a long running 90 year old event they have in some perverted way of thinking moved the Valley forward or improved and modernized anything ? It seems far more likely that they have taken a giant leap backwards and robbed the Valley people of a much beloved, multi community, inclusive and live local family production that has always been the most anticipated highlight of the year for the past almost 90 consecutive years ?

Why current ABF Management, who claim to be stewards in charge and responsible for the promotion and presentation of this event, appear unable to perform their duties or to perform the job they're paid to do and do what their predecessors have always done so well each and every year for the past 87 years, often in far more trying circumstances and in far less prosperous times, is difficult to comprehend ? And you have to wonder, Whatever happened to the # 1 rule in business that says that if you can't do your job because of your inexperience, immaturity, inability, personal bias, laziness, or just plain stupidity, then,, YOU'RE ALL FIRED ! (and a Class action recovery suit may be forthcoming ?)

An Identity Crisis ;

Can an identity crisis be looming in the town of Kentville ?

A proud and neighborly salt of the earth working class community with generous hard working friendly citizens and a rich historic Railroad, agriculture, food and farming background is losing many of its longtime local traditions, themes and trademarks while elected Town officials, many of them new arrivals just stand still, watch and even enable ? After having always been identified as the main Provincial railroad center ever since the old Dominion Rail days dating back to 1869, the town has since lost all passenger and freight train rail service in and out including a modern passenger Dayliner service that traveled back and forth to Halifax every day ? And after the railway had been shut down it seemed they couldn't clear out the brand new train station, dig up tracks and demolish the old roundhouse fast enough ? And so now, in what seems to be cruel mockery, the only visible signs left in Kentville from past glory years of what once was the largest, most important, most active railroad center west of Halifax is a hand painted picture of a train mural that has been etched onto the weather beaten side of a downtown business building ?

Unfortunately the end of the railway industry wasn't to be the last major transportation loss yo be forced upon the people of Kentville as they were to become even more isolated from the outside World when for no apparent rational or necessary reason the aviation community at the Waterville municipal Airport CCW3 complex were told to get out when they had done nothing wrong and had no where else to go ? An invaluable contributor to the local area was suddenly lost when a fully operational well established municipal airport, a well known popular Canadian sky diving facility, an internationally known long time pilot training and licensing academy, many private aircraft owned by local owners, and numerous other fully established aviation businesses were all lost to the community after being ordered off the property ? An eviction order courtesy of Kings Council also left our young Camp Aldershot Air Cadets without their base of operations, and now the next generation of youngsters will have to grow up without their popular aviation training and education facility ?

And so it had seemed that a duly elected group of officials who don't even live in the area had ended the long life of a historic local Aviation facility that took multiple decades to build and establish, and they had transformed a thriving Aeropark into a useless barren open field of weeds where unsupervised Michelin bike riding children can now be seen dodging dandelions that are poking their heads thru the deteriorating asphalt runway that once served as the landing platform for private and commercial aircraft to fly in and out on a daily basis ? And to add salt to this wound, what appeared to be a calculated senseless forced eviction and the subsequent devastating lost revenue to the local economy was to be hailed by Kings Council, ( and also by the prestigious Ivany Report Committee ) as being a bold and brilliant business decision to greatly improve and benefit the local area ?

After months of facing homelessness and an uncertain future, a few of the evicted tenants found sites elsewhere and relocated at their own expense to start all over again, while others just quit, and others were finally redirected to a new location in Greenwood (which just happened by chance to be Kings Council County Warden's home riding) ? And so, in the end a devastating loss for Kentville and the entire local area became a windfall for Kingston Greenwood, and, Kentville was left to carry on without either a Railway or an Airport ?

When the original Kentville KCA town School closed, Kentville lost its high school and students were left without a home town school ? They were now bused daily to the nearby town of Canning ? This left only the Grade 1 to 8 age groups to identify with Kentville as their home school, a situation that still exists today ? There is no longer a movie theater in Kentville as the downtown movie theater has been closed forever, and the popular Edge sports bar, eatery and pool hall had also closed down and was never replaced ? Harvey's Hamburgers drive thru closed down and it wasn't replaced ? The longtime bowling alley in New Minas was bought out by developers, torn down, and replaced with a business office complex ? We lost the local salvage, reclamation and disposal site in South Alton when the Provincial Government ordered it to be shut down, but the same folks who shut it down never offered to replace it to leave the community without this much needed facility ? One day a portion of roof blew off the town funeral home and it never re-opened leaving only one such establishment in town ? And, just as the citizens of Kentville were shocked to learn that both Apple Blossom Princess and the Queen Annapolisa pageants were terminated after 87 consecutive years, there was at the same time an all age Drag Queen show preparing to entertain at the Kings Arms Pub in a total flip flop scenario from the one that most Kentville citizens identify with at this time of year when popular Irish Rovers or Scottish pipers played at the pub ? Numerous local restaurants and small businesses have come and gone - mostly gone - and, after Maders has served the community for 50 years, high taxation and license fees, ridiculous Government rules and regulations have left Maders barely able to hang on ? The main town supermarket Jasons IGA had a fire forcing him to close down for over a year and so there was no supermarket to provide groceries for local citizens ? The ever popular multi venue Wandlyn Inn burned down and all of its venues were lost to the community ? The Inn was never replaced after the fire and now there's just a fast food MacDonald's on the old property as a replacement for the many lost hotel rooms, the indoor swimming pool, whirlpool and sauna, the nightclub, dual convention centers and dual restaurants that Wandlyn Inn had offered ?

The traditional July 1st Canada Day town sponsored event of fun, food, speeches and local entertainment held each year at the wading Pool was curtailed by the Town due to budget considerations, and if you want to enjoy July 1st entertainment or fireworks you must travel to New Minas, Hantsport or Berwick ? Access to water supply is always one of the most identifiable utility entitlements to be provided by any town ? Billions are currently being spent by the Canadian taxpayer to provide all First Nations people with free safe water ? Yet Kentville water commission charges the customer 10,000 dollars just to turn their town owned water on at the roadside and nothing else ? And after this initial surcharge has been forced upon the customer he still has to pay for all yard trenching, pipe laying and household plumbing work to be done ? KWC's valued new customer is then rewarded with a water bill courtesy of the town each and every month thereafter ?

They have even managed to take away Kentville's most famous of all and instantly identifiable town landmark in the hotel name Cornwallis Inn ? Cornwallis Inn is a well known trademark hotel name that has become synonymous World wide with the name of Kentville and ae name that represents a multitude of fond memories for residents ? It was hard to understand why the Town would ever allow such an important name to be changed, and it was also hard to understand why a previous Town of Kentville planning dept would ever allow numerous subsidized low rental apartment units to be built onto the side of this Town centerpiece and that also serve to block the access lane to the rear parking lot ? The Cornwallis Inn will always be one of the Valleys greatest treasured landmarks and is due for protected Canadian heritage site status ?

They have also changed well known and immediately identifiable names of some Kentville Streets and also the local traffic bridge that traverses the Cornwallis River ? And so now many citizens and delivery drivers do not know what they're talking about when they use these new names and it can be especially hard on Seniors who can become confused by unnecessary name changes made to familiar places ? In some cases this has created a safety hazard ?

In 2017 ABF Directors attempted to take Kentville's Grand Street Parade away from Kentville and move it to a different town ? Outraged citizens were forced to claw and battle just to get their own local parade returned back to them after they have hosted it for the last 87 years ? And, in yet another huge step backwards in that same year, ABF decided to cease and desist all Wednesday, Thursday and weekend games, food, music, displays, amusements, local student displays and performances, etc. etc. that were always held at Memorial Park during Apple Blossom festival week ? No explanation was given and no replacement or apology was ever offered by the Town for such a major loss of long running public outdoor entertainment to be absorbed by the citizens of Kentville ? And Kentville has now lost its most identifiable of all citizens that being their beloved Apple Blossom Princess Kentville, when a newcomer generation of ABF Officials showed uncommon immaturity, disrespect, disregard and insensitivity when presuming themselves to be the ones that are entitled to end the long running iconic Queen Annapolisa and Apple Blossom Princess competition after 88 years ? This means that all public Royal party appearances including all Princess Teas, the appearance at Kentville Children's Parade, Friday night concert, Wolfville Coronation ceremonies, fireworks, Parade, all Royal visitations to schools, shut-ins, Seniors, and all hospital attendances normally made by Queen Annapolisa and the Royal Party will no longer take place ?

In 2022 the Kentville Grand Street Parade was understandably limited following the 2 previous Covi year cancellations, but unfortunately this year's 2023 effort wasn't much better ? The enormous contribution and wonderful diversity of nearby Valley communities from Windsor to Digby was no longer included in this Parade ? Apple Blossom royalty and all Princess floats were also no longer included ? Many residents expressed disappointment when their beloved Apple Blossom Princess Kentville and child attendant were no longer included in their own Town Parade ? And it seemed Kentville has lost its most identifiable citizen and a wonderful Town Ambassador who carries out many important official Town duties while advertising and promoting Kentville simply by representing the town with beauty, charm, grace, dignity and talent all year long whenever and wherever she went ?

The long running three consecutive weekdays of wonderful mid week Apple Blossom entertainment down at the Park have been cancelled and Apple Blossom week entertainment is cut down to a bare bone single Friday night affair offering minimal local entertainment, some kindergarten bouncy castles, and food wagons that sell twenty dollar hamburgers, (gone are the days of the dollar dog and drink) ? And it feels strangely empty down there now that the highlight of the evening Royal Party visitation and rock music supplied by Eddy's Basement is no longer included ? And there was even a noted decrease in the quality of the fireworks, ( which btw will no longer be started by Queen Annapolisa at her official Royal Party visitation to the Park following Coronation ceremonies in Wolfville) ? And, the newcomer ABF Officials have found yet another way to take more away from ABF patrons when charging inflation stressed locals a high entrance fee just to attend a downtown open air ABF street dance ?

And so, the citizens of Kentville have become frustrated with the many cutbacks, cancellations and closures that are never replaced once gone ? Both of the Provincial Railway and the municipal Airport are now permanently closed and even Acadia Van lines inter provincial no longer stops ? The Wandlyn Inn complex and all of its popular hotel and restaurant services were never replaced ? Devastating cut backs were made to the historic Apple Blossom Festival that saw a week long fun filled period of public entertainment at Memorial Park reduced to a minimal Friday night affair and a parade that lasted less than an hour ? Concerns remain about the absence of an in-Town High School for Teens, the loss of a key funeral home, the loss of the Pool Hall, the absence of a movie theater, the loss of Harveys drive thru, the loss of one of 2 Tim Hortons and their non local hiring policy, the loss of the dt pizza parlor, the loss of the local fruit and vegetable market, the absence of a 7/11 convenience store, the closure of the bakery, and also the loss of the local disposal site when no replacement was offered by the Province that shut it down ? And there was the shocking elimination of historic Valley culture when they terminated the Valley Apple Blossom Princess event and when they put an end to the long running prestigious Acadia U Coronation ceremonies in Wolfville ? The sacrilegious changing of the name of Kentville's internationally known name Cornwallis Inn symbolically married to the Town name Kentville and cherished by local residents was extremely disappointing ? And many citizens worry about the serious shortage of tourist facilities after the Wandlyn hotel complex burned down and the Town had lost so many hospitality, business, tourist, restaurant, hotel, night club, convention and recreational venues ?

And now, in a more recent issue, we are seeing more and more of our small businesses that are located all over the Valley that not only provide local employment but also serve as popular meet and greet gathering spots for friends and neighbors, are now changing hands after being bought out or turned over to strangers that are not from Halifax or from N.S. nor even Canada but have arrived from another Continent ? These take-overs appear to include replacing management and assuming control over the business and hiring policy in some long time Valley fast food, gas, and coffee businesses ? And now it seems that whenever shopping at the Milne Court Petro-Can, or New Minas Ultramar, KVille Ultramar, KFC, or Mary Browns, the DQ, or the Burger King, or Subway, or any of the 3 Timmies , or Walmart, Needs, or when receiving a parcel from amazon, or paying the bill at a cash register st many other stores it feels like you're suddenly in a foreign country ? And some of the newly hired employees are new to Canada and not familiar with local currency and so it is advisable to count your change when paying by cash ? There are also some worries that the temporary foreign workers program is unfair and possibly racist, and others worry about the advent of nepotism if local establishments are run by new management and when many of our local residents can't find local jobs any more ? Another major local employer, Eassons Trucking, also seems to be affected by the current influx of foreign workers with some reports of untrained, unlicensed, unqualified, (and Government subsidized) unsafe drivers behind the wheel, and rumors that some units with multiple workers on board have a hole drilled in the floor of the sleeper cabin to accommodate a long piece of ABS plumbing pipe that is used to transfer raw shidzen sewage on a one way trip from the truck cabin interior directly down to the open highway below and avoid pit stops at the Big Stop ?

And, some concerns were shown over the recent Kentville municipal election, when many candidates seemed unawares of the Town's long time real traditions, customs, character and past history ? Some candidates idealistically saw Kentville as a kind of happy go lucky, blissful, Hallmark or Who-ville movie set type village inhabited by busy jolly munchkins frolicking up and down picturesque colorful cobblestone streets bordered by quaint shops, internationally known boutiques and fancy eateries ?

Kentville has elected a new Mayor who is also a new local business owner, who must tackle the current town crisis ? He appears to have befriended and may possibly be being influenced by the ex County Warden Brothers who resides in the Kingston/Greenwood area and who doesn't give a squat about Kentville and had previously sold out Kentville when leading the charge to use heartless expropriation without compensation to shut down the local municipal Airport, popular skydiving academy, international flight training academy and many other successful aviation businesses at Waterville ? And what about the new Mayors' recent New Year's message of congratulating himself on enlarging the size of his downtown retail store and expressing personal happiness over the new (taxpayer funded) installation of a brand new double wide sidewalk in front of his store, but failing to mention serious town issues like town youth unemployment, racial profile hiring at Hortons, the fentanyl and opioid crisis, vandalism, street people and homelessness, the end of our Princess Kentville and the loss of millions in town revenue after they terminated Queen Annapolisa and ruined Grand street Parade, as well as, the no place to stay or eat for tourists visiting Kentville problem, the long running need for an indoor town recreation facility (no one wants to get their daily exercise by hiking down crude outdoor trails, attacked by mosquitos, and witnessing users shoot up in the privacy of the forest) ? And there's also the housing crisis, the sudden high increases in rental rates crisis, the alarming rate of downtown business foreclosures and bankruptcies, and a need to honor Kentville's glorious past railroading history with a museum and outdoor train and locomotive display of some sort ? Adding to this, disrespect had been shown when, ( due to a drop of rain ) they cancelled this year's Military march-on and (the best in area) Remembrance Day ceremonies always held outdoors at the Memorial Cenotaph on Park Street ? There was also Kentvilles snubbing of the Trudeau Liberals express wish for diversity and inclusion in Canada when a shortened Grande Street Parade was no longer as inclusive or as diverse as per normal ? And where Senior citizens were seen to be perched precariously aboard a stop and go, unsheltered, jerking motion, no sided open vehicle without restraining devices, water or protection from the sun ? There was also the confusion caused from the nonsensical changing of many long time well known established town names including the most famous of them all the Cornwallis Inn ? There's also the pressing need to build a high school, and there are some complaints about the failure to provide public outdoor entertainment events that exceed the grade school level ? There was also some controversy over the hanging up of the biggest pride flag that money can buy hung above the main entrance of the Cornwallis Inn, and of course, also the serious drainage problem discovered when the recent town flooding crisis took place? There was also concerns shown after the Provincial Government forced our local reclamation and disposal site to permanently close down and didn't offer to replace it but just left the area without one ? And, there remains a demand for an inquiry into the exploitive five figure fee charged by Kentville water commission to a new customer just to turn the water on at the road ? And there are concerns over many recent takeovers of local small businesses when our locals around here can't find work ? And some new concerns have been expressed over the formation of an exclusive kind of Ontarioville newcomer type town slowly establishing itself as an independent town within a town ? Some local drivers are concerned over this years Spring pothole epidemic that made some streets unfit to drive on (at a time when a brand new double lane sidewalk installed in front of Phinneys was smooth as a baby's bum), and the refusal by Town to help drivers with expensive auto repairs caused by unguarded potholes ? And there was also concerns over the inadequate street lighting in many areas and the residential streets and sidewalks still needing attention ? And there was some complaints relating to the inconvenience felt by local residents when ultra slow motion repairs on Canaan Ave moved at three legged turtle racing speed and had caused this vital access route to remain closed to traffic, incl emergency vehicles, for many many Months, (unlike the speedy workmanship and high priority given to a new downtown sidewalk installation in the front of Phinneys) ?

And so, can it be time to stop come from away newcomer mentality, and make it mandatory for all candidates bidding on these important Town governing positions to be born, raised and reside in the town of Kentville in an effort to preserve, protect, retain and respect the unique character, history, diversity, identity and many longtime community traditions that make Kentville ?

May 30th, 2025 - 20 dollar burgers and bouncy castles ? High level security enforced in this year's Memorial Park Friday night rock concert ? ( must have taken up most of the budget ) ? Town of Kentville brings in outside police, cordons off the ground zero area with barricades and manned guard posts to establish maximum concert security level ? In past years this concert had always featured invited guest rock bands, interesting games, demonstrations and displays and a visit from the Queen Annapolisa Royal party following their prestigious coronation ceremony in Wolfville, but this newcomer version of the event appears to be some kind of an outdoor romper room type family show featuring food trucks, inflatable air bouncy castles and local bands as the featured invited guest main stage star performer ? Not much to do or see for those above the elementary grade school level other maybe purchase some food from a food truck that charges upscale restaurant prices and then dine on a paper plate with plastic utensils while standing up in a crowd of unruly kids and being lustfully observed by nearby hungry saliva drooling pet dogs leashed to their owners ? However, thanks to the upgraded crowd control security, a heavy police presence and the enforcement of strict traffic control, there had been a report of a parking violator being successfully apprehended and a runaway pet was captured and returned to its owner ? www.flickr.com/photos/74039487@N02/54558198569/in/photost...

ABF 2017 :

A quick review of the notorious hostile takeover bid and an attempt to extract the 2017 Kentville Grand Street Parade away from its natural home in the town of Kentville ?

February, 2017 - With only 3 months to go and parade planning and preparations well underway as per usual for the upcoming 2017 edition of Kentville Grand Street Parade, officials were suddenly caught totally off-guard and were absolutely blindsided by shocking news coming from out of nowhere that current ABF Management who are in charge of the festival had made a final decision in private to take Grand Street Parade away from its long time home in Kentville ? Apparently, they had already moved to taken it away from Kentville and then transfer it to New Minas during secret meetings without consulting, giving notice, or requesting permission ? And so it seemed that a group of inconsiderate Officials with radical new ideas had ignored town of Kentville interests and 87 years of tradition, and had (incredibly) just taken the annual Grand Street Parade ( and even future Parades ) from Kentville without consultation, notice or permission ? Drastic location changes and even elimination of other longtime events and attractions always held in Kentville such as the Friday night outdoor show and fireworks, the Memorial Park Wednesday and Thursday displays with Valley student participation and numerous attractions, the bringing in of popular outside bands, and even the famous historic Kentville Children's Parade were all targeted by this grouping of ABF directors for cut-back or termination ? Radical changes in the Queen Annapolisa and Apple Blossom Princess competition including gender, contestant rules, location of crowning ceremony, and changes in overall competition format were also discussed ? ABF Officials defended secretive, inconsiderate and authoritarian type actions by claiming that as stewards of the festival they are entitled and obliged to uphold the integrity of the festival ? (integrity ? ) They later changed stories saying they were left with no other choice due to Kentville's inability to prove they can successfully host such a large Parade event, ( Kentville has hosted this parade for the last 85 years ), and also because the people in charge of Grand Street Parade were unprofessional, indifferent and uncooperative ?

And so it came to be that a newly elected Mayor and a new Council in its infancy were suddenly confronted with perhaps the most serious challenge ever to be faced by the town of Kentville since the tragic loss of their two major transportation sources, that being the loss of the railway in 1989, followed by the shocking loss of aviation in 2014 when the Town CAO and the Warden and Council conspired to close out Waterville municipal Airport and evict all businesses and tenants ? This new and very serious challenge came in the form of a surprise and pernicious attack and attempt to hijack Kentville's most beloved local commercial attraction ? The unexpected surprise action came from an unfamiliar and unfriendly source that appeared to be inconsiderate, disrespectful, and even a tad opportunistic when considering that Kentville just finished installing a brand new rookie Mayor and Council ? When the newly elected Mayor of Kentville was suddenly swarmed by news of so many extreme actions already taken against her town's best interests, a shocked and disbelieving Mayor Snow said when speaking with local media that she was overwhelmed, heartbroken and called the actions unprecedented, disrespectful and unacceptable ? Everyone seemed to agree that an attack on Kentville's most popular and well known outdoor event without courtesy of an invitation, negotiation, inclusion, consultation or approval is unacceptable ? Needless to say, the biggest losers of all were the good citizens of Kentville who have contributed so much over the last 90 years going back to the thirties and forties in times when the CNR train brought many Parade patrons to stay at the Cornwallis Inn ? Over the years the Town has invested enormous amounts of its time, energy and town resources into the creation of a world-famous event that draws tens of thousands of visitors.

All Valley towns take great pride and look forward to their individual town festivals and especially their yearly parade. The citizens of Kentville are no different. Towns like Kingston, Hantsport, Wolfville, Windsor, Berwick, Canning, Greenwood etc. will never have to worry about someone hijacking their yearly community parade or otherwise taking it away ? However, sadly, the citizens of Kentville now face the troubling prospect of a possible loss of their annual town parade without notice at any time and of losing many years of time, energy, town resources, manpower and all of the other general services and contributions made during the past 88 years that it has taken to create this world class event ?

The current 2017 ABF board of Directors is led by Angela Pelton and Alxys Chamberlain (Queen Annapolisa 2015), with Barb Madic, Heidi Scotney-Kinsman, John Patterson, Katie Gordon, Krista Morine, Linda Keddy, Logan Morse, Sarah Griffiths, and Steffany Cox-Lingard ?

On the recent 2023 edition of the Grand Street Parade :

"it looked as if some spectators along the route just joined in and began to walk along to make themselves a part of the parade ? "

May 27th, 2023 - Dismay, disillusion and disappointment prevail in Kentville over shocking changes and missing regular entrees in this years 2023 Grand Street Parade ? Where is our famous Queen Annapolisa and where are Apple Blossom Princesses and child attendants riding in their beautiful hand crafted decorated floats ? Where's the town criers ? And what about majorette groups, Scottish pipers and large marching bands that always attend ? And where is Hantsport and Windsor and their large delegations ? And where are Digby, Aylesford, Annapolis Royal, Canning, Middleton, Wolfville, and more ? Why are so many of the Valley towns and villages that normally participate not included in the parade this year ? It was also extremely disappointing for many when for the first time ever, Kentville Apple Blossom Princess (aka Miss Kentville) was no longer included ? Many local residents young and old identify with the Apple Blossom Princess at this time of year ? This year the towns royal float was used to transport a group of everyday normal town residents sitting together in a social scene that was meant to identity Kentville with diversity and inclusion ? The New Minas float also did not include their Apple Blossom Princess this year, however it had been transformed into a mobile advertisment for the famous New Minas UFO incident which all New Minions identify with. Berwick's float didn't include a Princess Berwick this year but was altered to proudly identify with the town's upcoming Centennial celebrations. And the Kingston float was also missing an Apple Blossom Princess this year but was instead used to promote their long running Kingston Steer Barbecue that all Kingstonians can identify with. It was good to see an RCMP contingent again although they sent far less officers this year than usual ? And it was noted that only one other large marching band appeared in the parade when usually 4 or more of these big bands, many with pipers, usually attend after traveling in from places like Cape Breton, Bridgewater, Dartmouth etc ? And where were the pets and farm animals ? There were no horses, wooden wagons, riders or other livestock this year and even the usual greyhound dog contingent did not appear ? Also noticed that some spectators must have just joined in and began walking along to become part of the parade, and others must have come over from the Children's parade with their strollers to join in ? There was a variety of advertisers, most from out of town but some local ? There were various Political parties represented, with the largest delegation coming from the Kody Blois Liberals ? All in all, this Year's parade seemed to be a weak and incomplete effort that really missed the inclusion and diversity of royal pageantry and 7 to 10 spectacular award winning Princess floats ? It was also missing many of the large street marching bands and majorettes that usually enter ? It was also missing the usual local agriculture horticulture and livestock component, the traditional Scottish pipers bands that always attend, and the many large out of town contingents that always normally participate ? This was not the famous grand street parade that patrons are used to seeing and did not represent the high standards and degree of professionalism set by previous Grand Street Parades ? It was soon obvious that what had been advertised as a newer, bigger, bolder, more inclusive and more diverse parade was nonsense and to the contrary this, what we were told was to be a new modern version of an old standard, was instead theopposite when it was missing the inclusion and the diversity of many now excluded Valley communities and their Princesses that had always come to Kentville to join in and participate in the Queen Annapolisa competition ?

And so, quickly summing up, can this strangely unfamiliar, shortened, now Royal-less, newcomer mentality amateur version of the long running world-famous Grand Street Parade that is now missing Queen Annapolisa and 7 to 10 Apple Blossom Princesses and 7 to 10 beautifully handcrafted individual Town Princess floats, and is also missing all of the unique character and diversity usually provided by the many missing Valley communities, and that is missing so much more of the usual content now become a community parade that is no longer fit for its regular media televised broadcast, and, can this upsetting and disappointing attempt to represent a long running world class extra special community event now signal the end of the once glorious Grand Street Parade era ?

2023 Grand Street Parade - In Trudeau's modern Liberal era of diversity and inclusion in Canada, why is the Kentville parade now excluding so many people and denying so much diversity ? The exclusion of so many of the usual participants and denial of their valued diversity have marred the 2023 Grand Street Parade ? Many nearby Valley communities were missing in the Parade when longtime participants were no longer included ? History of the Vienna Hofburg

First residence

With the elevation of Austria to Archduchy in 1156, Vienna became a city of residence. From the residence of the Babenberg dynasty, who was located on the present site "Am Hof", unfortunately, there do not exist any remains anymore. After the extinction of the Babenberg, Ottokar II of Bohemia (1230-1278) took over by marriage the rule in Vienna and began in 1275 with the construction of a castle within the city walls of Vienna. This castle was equipped with four towers around a rectangular court that is known as Schweizerhof today. In the battle for the German crown Ottokar was defeated at the Battle of Dürnkrut by Rudolf I of Habsburg (1218-1291) and killed during the retreat.

As the old residence of the Babenberg in 1276 burned down, Rudolf probably 1279 moved into the former castle of Ottokar. The descendants of Rudolf extended the castle only slightly: castle chapel (documentary mention in 1296), St. Augustine's Church (consecrated in 1349), reconstruction of the chapel (1423-1426). Due to the division of the lands of the Habsburg Vienna lost its importance and also lacked the financial resources to expand the castle.

Imperial residence

Under Frederick III. (1415-1493) the Habsburgs obtained the imperial title and Vienna became an imperial residence. But Friedrich and his successors used the Vienna Residence only rarely and so it happened that the imperial residence temporarily orphaned. Only under Ferdinand I (1503-1564) Vienna again became the capital of the Archduchy. Under Ferdinand set in a large construction activity: The three existing wings of the Swiss court were expanded and increased. The defensive wall in the northwest as fourth tract with the Swiss Gate (built in 1552 probably by Pietro Ferrabosco) was rebuilt. In the southwest, a tract for Ferdinand's children (the so-called "children Stöckl") was added. The newly constituted authorities Exchequer and Chancery were located in adjacent buildings at Castle Square. Were added in the castle an art chamber, a hospital, a passage from the castle to St. Augustine's Church and a new ballroom.

First major extensions of the residence

In the area of "desolate church" built Ferdinand from 1559 a solitary residence for his son. However, the construction was delayed, and Maximilian II (1527-1576) after his father's death in 1564 moved into the ancient castle. His residence he for his Spanish horses had converted into a Hofstallgebäude (Stallburg - stables) and increased from 1565 .

Ferdinand I decided to divide his lands to his three sons, which led to a reduction of Vienna as a residence. Moreover, stayed Maximilian II, who was awarded alongside Austria above and below the Enns also Bohemia and Hungary, readily in Prague and he moved also the residence there. In 1575 he decided to build a new building in front of the Swiss court for the royal household of his eldest son, Rudolf II (1552-1612). The 1577 in the style of the late Renaissance completed and in 1610 expanded building, which was significantly fitted with a turret with "welscher hood" and an astronomical clock, but by the governor of the Emperor (Archduke Ernst of Austria) was inhabited. However, the name "Amalienborg Castle" comes from Amalie of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (wife of Joseph I.), which in 1711 there installed her widow seat.

In the late 16th and early 17th Century only a few extensions were carried out: extension of a separate tract in the northeast of the castle for the Treasure and Art chamber (1583-1585) and setting up of a dance hall in the area of today's Redoutensäle (1629-1631).

Under Leopold I the dance hall by Ludovico Burnacini 1659/1660 was rebuilt into an at that time modern theater ("Comedy House"). 1666 Leopold I in the area of today's castle garden a new opera house with three tiers and a capacity of 5,000 people had built.

In the 1660-ies under Leopold I (1640-1705) after the plans of architect Filiberto Lucchese an elongated wing building between the Amalienborg Castle and the Schweizerhof, the so-called Leopoldine Wing, was built. However, since the tract shortly after the completion burned down, this by Giovanni Pietro Tencala was set up newly and increased. Architecturally, this tract still connects to the late Renaissance. The connection with the Amalienborg castle followed then under Leopold's son Joseph I (1678-1711).

After completion of the Leopoldine Wing the in the southeast of castle located riding school was renewed, the south tower of the old castle pulled down, the old sacristy of the chapel replaced by an extension. Under Charles VI. (1685-1740) the Gateway Building between cabbage market (Kohlmarkt) and Courtyard by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt was transformed into a monumental triumphal arch as a representative sign of the imperial power. However, this construction does not exist anymore, it had to give way to the Michael tract.

Baroque redesign of the Hofburg

In the early 18th Century set in a buoyant construction activity. The emperor commissioned Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach with the construction of new stables outside the city walls and a new court library.

After the death of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, his son Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach took over the construction management for the stables and the court library. 1725 the palatial front of the stables was completed. As already during the construction period has been established that the stables were dimensioned too small, the other wings were not realized anymore. The with frescoes by Daniel Gran and statues of Emperors by Paul Strudel equipped Court Library was completed in 1737.

Opposite the Leopoldine Wing a new Reich Chancellery should be built. 1723 was entrusted with the planning Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. 1726, however, the supervision the Reich Chancellery was withdrawn and transferred to the Chancery and thus Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach, who also designed the adjacent Court Chamber and the front to St. Michael's Church. 1728 the Court Chamber and the facade of the two buildings were completed. By Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach was also the Michaelertrakt, the connection between the Winter Riding School and the Imperial Chancellery Wing planned. However, since the old Burgtheater the building was in the path, this was half done for a period of 150 years and was only completed in 1889-1893 by Ferdinand Kirschner .

Under Maria Theresia (1717-1780) the at St. Michael's Square located and only as remnants existing Ballhaus was adapted as a court theater. Beside the Emperor hospital in return a new ball house was built, being eponymous for the Ballhausplatz. Subsequently, there occured again and again conversions and adaptations: reconstruction of the comedy hall according to the plans of Jean Nicolas Jadot into two ballrooms, the small and large ball room (1744-1748). The transformation of the two halls (from 1760), repair of the Court Library, and from 1769 onwards the design of the Josephsplatz took place under Joseph Nicolas of Pacassi. These buildings were completed by the successor of Pacassi Franz Anton Hillebrandt. As an extension for the Court Library in the southeast the Augustinian tract was built.

Other structural measures under Maria Theresia: establishment of the court pharmacy into the Stallburg, relocation of the in the Stallburg housed art collection into the Upper Belvedere, razing of the two remaining towers of the old castle, the construction of two stairways (the ambassador stairway and the column stairways (Botschafter- and Säulenstiege).

Extensions in the 19th Century and early 20th century

Francis II (1768-1835) gave Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen and his wife Marie Christine (daughter of Maria Theresa) the Palais Tarouca south of the Augustinian monastery. From 1800 this was remodeled by Louis Montoyer and extended by a wing building to today's Albertina.

1804, Francis II proclaimed the hereditary Empire of Austria and was, consequently, as Franz I the first Emperor of Austria. With the by Napoleon Bonaparte provoked abdication of the emperor in 1806 ended the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.

1809 part of the old bastions was blown up at the castle in consequence of the war with Napoleon, and after it blazed. Towards today's ring road, then new outworks were created (the so-called Hornwerkskurtine and the Escarpen). In the early 20-ies of the 19th Century were layed out three gardens: the private imperial castle garden with two of Louis Remy planned steel/glass- constructed greenhouses, Heroes Square (Heldenplatz) with avenues and the People's garden (Volksgarten) with the Theseus Temple (Pietro Nobile). At the same time, emerged also the new, 1821 by Luigi Cagnola began and 1824 by Pietro Nobile completed outer castle gate.

1846 was built a monumental memorial to Francis I in Inner Castle Square. In the turmoil of the 1848 revolution the Stallburg was stormed and fought fiercely at the outer castle square and the castle gate. As a result, the roof of the court library burned. The political consequences of the revolution were the abdication of Emperor Ferdinand I (1793-1875), the dismissal of the dreaded Chancellor Clemens Lothar Fürst Metternich and the enthronement of Ferdinand's nephew Franz Joseph.

In the first years of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I (1830-1916) the royal stables of Leopold Mayer have been redesigned and expanded. As part of the expansion of the city, the city walls were razed and instead of the fortifications arose place for a magnificent boulevard, the Ringstrasse. 1862, the idea of an Imperial Forum by architect Ludwig Förster was born. On the surface between the Hofburg and the Imperial Stables should arise court museums (Museum of Art History and Museum of Natural History).

At the outer Castle Square (today's Heldenplatz) were in the 60-ies of the 19th Century the by Anton Dominik Fernkorn created equestrian statues of Archduke Charles (victor over Napoleon at the Battle of Aspern) and Prince Eugene of Savoy (victor over the Turks in several battles) set up.

After an unsuccessful architectural competition on the design of the Heroes' Square area in 1869 Gottfried Semper could be won. This led to the involuntary and not frictionless collaboration with Carl Freiherr von Hasenauer. Planned was a two-wing complex beyond the ring road, with the two flanking twin museums (Art and Natural History Museum) and the old stables as a conclusion. 1871 was began with the Erdaushebungen (excavations) for the museums. 1889, the Museum of Natural History was opened, and in 1891, the Museum of Art History.

On a watercolor from 1873 by Rudolf Ritter von Alt (1812 - 1905) an overall view of the Imperial Forum is shown.

1888, the Old Court Theatre at St. Michael's Square was demolished, as the new KK Court Theatre (today's Burgtheater), built by Gottfried Semper and Carl Freiherr von Hasenauer, was finished. The since 150 years existing construction site at St. Michael's Square could be completed. The roundel got a dome, the concave curved Michaelertrakt was finalized by Ferdinand Kirschner. The once by Lorenzo Mattielli created cycle of statues on the facade of the Reich Chancellery was continued with four other "deeds of Hercules' at he side of the passage arches. 1893, the Hofburg had finally got its ostentatious show facade.

1901, the old greenhouses were demolished and replaced by an orangery with Art Nouveau elements according to plans by Friedrich Ohmann (completed in 1910). In 1907, the Corps de Logis, which forms the end of the Neue Burg, is completed. Since Emperor Franz Joseph I in budding 20th Century no longer was interested in lengthy construction projects and the heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este (1863-1914) was against the establishment of a throne hall building, but was in favour for the construction of a smaller ballroom tract, the implementation of the second wing was dropped. After the assassination of Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este in Sarajevo, the First World War broke out. Franz Joseph I died in 1916. A great-nephew of Franz Joseph I, Charles I (1887-1922), succeeded to the throne, however, he held only two years. The end of the First World War also meant the end of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. On 11 November 1918 the First Republic was proclaimed. As Karl although renounced to government business, but not to the throne, he had to go into exile with his family.

The Imperial Palace in the 20th century

The interior design of the ballroom tract and the Neue Burg continued despite the end of the monarchy until 1926. By the end of the monarchy, many of the buildings lost their purpose. Furthermore used or operated was the Riding School. The stables were used from 1921 as an exhibition site of the Vienna Fair ("Fair Palace"). In 1928, the Corps de Logis, the Museum of Ethnology, until then part of the Natural History Museum, opened. In 1935 the collection of weapons (Court, Hunting and Armour Chamber) of the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History) came in the Neue Burg.

1933/1934 the outer castle gate by Rudolf Wondracek was transformed into the hero monument to the victims of the First World War. 1935 emerged on the left and on the right of the castle gate the pylon portals with eagle sculptures by William Frass. In March 1938, the Heroes Square and the balcony of the Neue Burg gained notoriety after Adolf Hitler to the cheering crowd at the Heldenplatz announced the annexation of Austria to the German Reich. The Nazis were planning a redesign of the Heroes' Square to a paved parade and ceremony space. The plans were not realized since 1943 a fire pond at Heldenplatz was dredged and the place was later used for agriculture. In the Trade Fair Palace during the period of Nazism propaganda events were held.

During the war, the Hofburg (Imperial Stables, St. Augustine's Church, Albertina, the official building of the Federal President, the current building of the Federal Chancellery) was severely damaged by bombing: The first President of the Second Republic, Dr. Karl Renner, in 1946 the Office of the President moved into the Leopoldine Wing (in the former living quarters of Maria Theresa and Joseph II).

During the occupation time the seat of the Inter-Allied Commission was housed in the Neue Burg.

1946 first events were held in the Exhibition Palace again, and were built two large halls in the main courtyard of the Exhibition Palace. In the course of the reconstruction war damages were disposed and the Imperial Palace was repaired, the barn castle (Stallburg) erected again. In 1958, in the ballroom wing the convention center has been set up.

1962-1966 the modern Library of the Austrian National Library is housed in the Neue Burg.

1989 emerged for the first time the notion of a "Museum Quarter". The museum quarter should include contemporary art and culture. The oversized design by Laurids and Manfred Ortner but was downsized several times after resistance of a citizens' initiative. It was implemented a decade later.

1992 the two Redoutensäle (ball rooms) burned out completely. Yet shortly after the fire was started with reconstruction. The roof was reconstructed and the little ball room (Kleiner Redoutensaal) could be restored. The big ball room, however, was renovated and designed with paintings by Josef Mikl. In 1997 the two halls were reopened.

From 1997-2002 the Museum Quarter (including Kunsthalle Wien, Leopold Collection) was rebuilt and the old building fabric renovated.

Was began in 1999 with the renovation of the Albertina. The by a study building, two exhibit halls and an underground storage vault extended Museum was reopened in 2003. The Albertina ramp was built with an oversized shed roof by Hans Hollein.

In 2006, additional rooms for the convention center were created by the boiler house yard.

This is 94 - 99 Bath Street in Birmingham. Part of a former gun making factory. Got on a snowy Bath Street. I took doors 94 to 97, but didn't see doors 98 or 99.

It used to be the Smith Press Industrial Works, described by PastScape as an Industrial Unit in Bath Street.

Now it looks like houses, with the wall all painted white.

The former gun making factory also includes 28a - 32 Shadwell Street in it's listing.

Gun making factory. 1839-40 extended 1850-59. Flemish bond red

brick. painted on Shadwell Street elevation, inner ranges have Flemish

stretcher bond stretcher bond brick walls. Slate roofs with gabled

ends. Rectangular plan overall with ranges facing Bath Street (SE)

and Shadwell Street (NW) and 3 linking ranges framing 2 rectangular

central courtyards. 2 storey 14 and 15-window ranges to Bath Street

and Shadwell Street respectively. 25-pane cast-iron windows in

segmental-headed openings with stone cills. Bath Street has rounded

Note The Bath Street (SE) range was built in 1839-40 for William Read

a coach builder. By 1860 Thomas Mabbutt a gun implement maker

occupied part of Read's buildings which by then had been extended

around two courtyards and to Shadwell Street. By 1871 Mabbutt

occupied the whole building and the 1876 Directory lists the whole

building as occupied by Abingdon Works Company Ltd., its managing

director being Thomas Mabbutt. The factory was taken over in circa

1907-8 by Humphries and Dawes, Cycle Makers. Since 1913 it has been

occupied by various gun makers and light engineering firms.

Successful project to address marine bio-invasions concludes

as ballast water management treaty nears entry into force

A decade-long project to promote implementation of an international treaty stemming the transfer of potentially invasive species in ships’ ballast water has reached a successful conclusion at a meeting of stakeholders from Governments, industry and UN bodies.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been executing the GloBallast Partnerships Programme in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project was launched in 2007 after an initial 4-year phase and has been assisting developing countries to reduce the transfer of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens in ships’ ballast water and implement the IMO Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention.

The final meeting of the GloBallast Global Project Task Force (GPTF), held in Panama City, Panama (16 to 17 March), highlighted the legacy elements of the GloBallast project, which are expected to be sustained by its main stakeholders following the formal closure of the project in June 2017. Specific examples include GloBallast training packages to support the capacity-building needs of countries implementing the BWM Convention. The regular Ballast Water Management R&D Fora, which promoted development of innovative ballast water treatment technologies, are also expected to continue after the project’s closure.

The GloBallast project has developed a successful model of working with lead partnering countries as well as the shipping industry and academia to catalyse knowledge-sharing, training and capacity-building. Regional task forces were formed in 12 developing sub-regions and regional strategies and action plans on ballast water management were developed, involving more than 100 countries; to date, six of these have been adopted through the regional cooperating institutions. GloBallast has also facilitated capacity building at the national level, helping to establish national task forces and assisting with drafting and adopting the national legislation in 80% of its lead partnering countries. This has supported many of these countries to ratify the BWM Convention, which will enter into force in September 2017. The meeting in Panama promoted the key role of the project’s lead partnering countries within their respective regions to sustain regional BWM implementation, and explored funding mechanisms that could finance future capacity-building needs.

The GloBallast project also pioneered a public-private sector partnership. The Global Industry Alliance for Marine Biosecurity (GIA) includes shipping companies such as Keppel Offshore and Marine (KOM) and APL. This alliance supported the formation of the Global Ballast Water Test Organizations Network (GloBal TestNet), which is formed of 19 organizations that test ballast water treatment systems and aims to increase levels of standardization, transparency and openness in so doing.

Dr Stefan Micallef, Director of IMO’s Marine Environment Division, said the GloBallast project was an outstanding example of direct, large-scale action taken by IMO, together with other international entities, to address the global threat to the health of the world’s oceans from invasive species carried in ships’ ballast water.

“Through GloBallast, Governments, industry and other stakeholders have acted to further improve the environmental and socio-economic sustainability of shipping and worked to reduce its negative impact on marine ecosystems. I have every hope that the ‘GloBallast family’ will continue its championing efforts and collaboration to protect our oceans, in the spirit of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14,” Dr Micallef said.

Dr Andrew Hudson, Head of the Water & Ocean Governance Programme at UNDP, said the GloBallast project had pioneered a successful model for collaboration, cooperation and capacity-building, which was now being emulated through other “Glo-X” projects.

“The GEF-UNDP-IMO GloBallast Programme has played a key catalytic role in preparing countries and the shipping industry for the implementation of the BWM Convention, which will reduce the significant ecological and economic damage, lost livelihoods and human health impacts often caused by invasive species. The legacy and impacts of the project will go on long after it formally closes,” Dr Hudson said.

Mr Chris Severin, International Waters Coordinator at the GEF, said the GEF is proud to have partnered with the United Nations, through IMO and UNDP, towards providing the world with a framework to start tackling one of the avenues for spreading of invasive species, namely the BWM Convention.

“I sincerely believe that the implementation of the BWM Convention will assist nations not only in delivering essential contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals, but also offer an opportunity for unlocking the potential of the so-called blue economy. The two GEF projects, totalling a grant of $12 million USD, have been supporting the 17-year process leading to what we are celebrating today, namely the entry into force of the BWM Convention – a convention that, through strong partnerships with leading nations and private sector partners, will unlock an unprecedented estimated private-sector investment of a minimum of US$30 billion,” Mr Severin said.

The GloBallast Global Project Task Force (GPTF) meeting, hosted by the Panama Maritime Authority, was attended by 43 participants, including representatives from 12 of the 15 Lead Partnering Countries of the GloBallast project (Argentina, Bahamas, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Ghana, Jamaica, Nigeria, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Yemen); one Pilot Country, Brazil; Regional Coordinating Organizations (REMPEC, SPREP, PERSGA and CPPS); GEF, UNDP and IMO; and from strategic partners, including the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), International Ocean Institute (IOI), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the GloBal TestNet and the World Maritime University (WMU).

The Uyghurs are a very welcoming Muslim Turkic ethnic group living in Eastern and Central Asia. About 7,2 millions of them live in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region at the western extremity of China. Uighur means unity or alliance. Their origins seem to come back to the Ding Ling nomads, in the 3rd century BC. The ancestors of the Uyghurs mixed with Turkish nomad tribes, Hans, Mongolians and Tibetans. With the settlement of the population and the development of trade, commercial links with China developped on the Silk Road. At the end of the 10th century, Islam spread. The imperial governement of China then implemented a tight control over the region. This led to the unrest of Uqturpan in 1765. Rebellions and separatist revendications have never ceased since then, even after the region became autonomous in 1955. Islam used to have a real influence on economic, legal land educational affairs as well as on the matrimonial system. Nowadays religion has shrunk to the personal space.
