Este año, la Casa del Deporte implementará un total de 19 escuelas gratuitas en Viña del Mar, con once disciplinas entre las que se encuentran como novedades el balonmano y la halterofilia.
Entre las postales que dejaron los X Juegos Suramericanos ODESUR Santiago 2014, además de la histórica cosecha de medallas que completaron un total de 129 preseas para nuestro país, se cuentan recintos repletos de público vitoreando a deportistas como si se tratasen de eliminatorias mundialistas de futbol, evidenciando el gran interés y pasión que sienten los chilenos por deportes muy distintos al balompié.
Consciente de esta atención por variadas disciplinas, es que la Ilustre Municipalidad de Viña del Mar, a través de la Casa del Deporte, hace ya casi una década, ha implementado de forma gratuita en toda la ciudad, un programa compuesto por Escuelas Deportivas, y que este año junto a las ya clásicas Tenis, taekwondo, Karate, Natación, Basquetbol, Hockey Patín, Gimnasia Rítmica, Voleibol y Rugby, trae importantes novedades, como la inclusión de dos nuevas especialidades deportivas.
El programa de Escuelas Deportivas, este 2014, da la bienvenida a su oferta al cada día más popular Balonmano o Handball, y que después de la brillante participación de las selecciones chilenas masculinas y femeninas de la disciplina, premiadas con bronce en ODESUR 2014, y que justamente jugaron en Viña del Mar, es que niños, jóvenes y adultos, pusieron sus ojos sobre esta entretenida rama deportiva.
Junto con el balonmano, la Halterofilia o Levantamiento Olímpico de Pesas, también se suma al programa Escuelas Deportivas, y consiste en el levantamiento de la mayor cantidad de peso posible en una barra en cuyos extremos se fijan varios discos, los cuales determinan el peso final que se levanta, y que reciben el nombre de “haltera”.
Orientadas a niños entre 7 y 14 años, las Escuelas Deportivas 2014, suman un total de diecinueve, y para la inscripción en cualquiera de las once disciplinas de este año, sólo hay que asistir al lugar, el día y la hora fijada para la clase, y llenar una matrícula gratuita con los datos personales del alumno, y la firma de un apoderado mayor de edad autorizando la participación del menor en el taller. Inveneo is proud to be an implementing partner with Creative Associates in the Tanzania 21st Century Basic Education Program (Tz21) where our role is to lead the technology intervention design and deployment with Kicheko Ltd, our Inveneo Certified ICT Partner (ICIP) in Tanzania. Together, Inveneo and Kicheko have been instrumental in introducing sustainable technology solutions that are relevant to rural Tanzanian schools that often lack electrical power and ICT skilled staff.
Recently we passed a major milestone in the program - the deployment of information and communication technologies to 5 pilot schools.
Dr. H.E. Kavishe of Kicheko, Wayan Vota and Jen Overgaag of Inveneo, assisted by a cadre of Kicheko technicians, installed a mix of laptops, desktops, LED projectors and related networking and power equipment at Naliendele, Kambarage, Darajani, and Kisiwandui Primary Schools, and Machakaeni Teacher Center.
The pilot deployment is testing technology configurations and the installation was used to train local engineers on Inveneo installation methodologies in preparation for the major ICT deployment to all schools, scheduled for early 2012.

Under the framework of UNDP’s “Implementing NAPA Priority Interventions to Build Resilience in the Agriculture and Water Sectors to the Adverse Impacts of Climate Change” project, the Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources of the Government of Sudan, with the support of UNDP is implementing pilot adaptation measures and strengthening national and local capacities to respond to climate change and its impact in Sudan.
The pictures show activities implemented in River Nile State, where six villages that lay alongside the western bank of the River Atbara have been targeted by UNDP for increasing the resilience of the local communities to the effects of climate change in Sudan. Through an extensive consultative process among local stakeholders and community members, these six villages were revealed to be among the hardest hit by recurring food insecurity issues. In recent years, as climate change has further taken its toll on the dry, desolate region, the riverine villages have again and again received below average flooding which has in turn resulted in significantly lower crop yields during the cultivation season. For the farmers of Lower Atbara who depend on the meagre waters to sustain their livelihoods - the struggle to provide the basic needs for their families has become even more pronounced.
Beginning in 2011, the bold initiatives undertaken by the project have consisted of awareness raising activities, supplying supplementary irrigation, provision of agricultural extension and improved seeds, introduction of cash crops and vegetables, planting of shelterbelts to reduce sand encroachment and availing butane gas to the communities.
The project is made possible through the generous support of the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The Port Angeles Fire Hall stands as a reminder that not all visions are implemented as planned. Designed by Seattle architect William Aitken and completed in 1931, the Art Deco Fire Hall was the first of three contiguous buildings that were to serve collectively as a city-government campus. Budget realities during the Depression, however, forced city leaders to scrap plans for the additional buildings, leaving the Fire Hall to serve triple-duty as the permanent home for the Fire Department, the City Council Chambers and the city jail. The Fire Department used the building until the 1950's, at which point new equipment and firefighting technologies required the department to relocate to a larger facility nearby. But the Fire Hall remained in active use, serving as a juvenile home, Port Angeles’ first YMCA, the city Sanitation Department, a Senior Center and, until closing in 2006, a popular café.
The Fire Hall is located on soft and moisture sensitive soils, creating a concern of foundation settling and possible erosion and seismic related problems. In addition, the building’s envelope is no longer weatherproof, contributing to interior deterioration. Recent assessments place the cost for core and shell upgrades at over $1 million dollars, with full restoration likely to cost double that. Undaunted, city and county officials continue to champion rehabilitation and reuse of the structure. Together with the former Carnegie Library (now the Clallam County Historical Museum) and the historic Clallam County Courthouse, in 2011 the Fire Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Port Angeles Civic Historic District, the only National Register-listed historic district within the city’s core. Returning the Fire Hall to active use would not only restore the vision city leaders had nearly a century ago, it would complement the positive effect the Port Angeles Downtown Association has had in its efforts to revitalize and enhance the city’s Main Street business core.

Agahi to implement the Nokia-UNESCO Mobile Learning initiative to deliver quality education to teachers
Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO collaborate to launch Mobile Learning for Teacher’s in Pakistan using Nokia Education Delivery App to facilitate teacher training via mobile phones
Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO Islamabad launched the project “Mobile Learning Project for Teacher’s Professional Development” today as formal collaboration in the presence of senior government officials, Nokia representatives and UNESCO representatives. As part of this program, UNESCO and Nokia are joining hands, where Nokia is providing its mobile phones and its application “Nokia Education Delivery (NED) for UNESCO’s project on ‘use of ICT for professional development of public school teachers’ in remote areas.
Since 2011 NED has turned into an open source solution to improve livelihoods, and in order to support such mobile learning innovations to be filled with life in Pakistan, The project will be implemented by AGAHI, a UNESCO partner and a non-profit foundation working in the area of communication and media policy design.
Nokia developed NED to allow using a mobile phone to access and download videos and other educational materials from a constantly updated education library. Operating in hundreds of schools and having reached millions of students in the Philippines, Tanzania, Chile and Colombia, Nokia Education Delivery has been shown to improve study results and increase retention among students.
This collaboration is part of the agreement signed last year between UNESCO and Nokia at international level to promote the use of mobile technologies to further the objectives of “Education for All”. As part of this agreement Nokia is developing applications and new Mobile technologies offering access to information and enrich learning environments at global level.
In Pakistan, through the project “Mobile Learning for Teachers” Nokia’s Education Delivery application will help UNESCO to enable the delivery of high- quality educational materials to teachers who lack training and resources though mobile phones giving an opportunity to teachers to train themselves on the same level as professionally competent teachers.
Speaking about the project, UNESCO Director, Kozue Kai Nagata said, “In 21st century Public- private partnerships are enjoying growing attention and support as a new and sustainable modality for development. We are confident to collaborate with Nokia to provide us with the best platform to train public school teachers. Nokia Education Delivery is fit to match our need of delivering quality training to a large number of public school teachers across Pakistan through the project named “Mobile Learning for Teachers”
Amir Jahangir, President AGAHI and a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, shared his views on the launch that “Pakistan is a knowledge starved country, where universal education has its own challenges. To meet the target of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) on education, Pakistan needs to address its education challenges through innovation and technology which can reach to a larger population with cost effective solutions”.
Speaking about the launch of NED program, Ulrike Vott Nokia Sustainability Manager for Middle East said, “Nokia Education Delivery facilitates education in a fun and interactive way. In addition to the NED software, Nokia offers program implementation support for the benefit of Pakistan’s education landscape.” The Nokia Education Delivery software system has two modules. The first module is installed on a Nokia mobile phone and contains a browse able catalog of educational videos. The second module is installed on the computer of the education administrator. It manages the organization’s mobile video library, so that videos can be added, deleted and updated. It also provides information on the usage of different videos.”
This unique pilot project for Pakistan has been initiated by UNESCO and AGAHI aims at using Mobile phones as medium for training teachers, where the teachers in remote areas will be equipped with devices, SIMs, a software solution and high quality educational content. The course for training and capacity building will be developed into video files and will be transmitted step by step according to curriculum on the phones provided to teachers. Over the course of the training period, teachers will be tested via SMS on regular basis and as an incentive, those who will score highest in tests will receive free mobile top ups. At the end of the course, test scores of all teachers will be aggregated and the passing teachers will be awarded certificate in the final workshop.
AGAHI is UNESCO implementing partner in Pakistan. A not for profit, AGAHI specializes in creating communication, information and media policy design tools, that enables the stakeholders to engage in information collaboration on knowledge-based platforms. AGAHI works in building the capacity of knowledge workers in creating content based on best practices to disseminate information in building a more integrated knowledge ecosystem.

El ministro de Energía y Minas, Gonzalo Tamayo Flores, reafirmó hoy que el Gobierno cumplirá el compromiso de llevar el gas natural a la región Cusco, en un plazo no mayor a dos años. Para ello, mediante un proyecto encargado a Proinversión, se implementará un esquema de transporte de gas por camiones, conocido con el nombre de ‘ductos virtuales’.
“Este proyecto, cuya inversión aproximada será de 350 millones de dólares, abarca la construcción, operación y mantenimiento de sistemas de distribución de gas natural por una red de ductos que llevará este combustible en camiones a Cusco y otras ciudades del sur del país”, sostuvo en conferencia de prensa Tamayo Flores.
Agregó que a través de este sistema de ductos se priorizará el consumo doméstico y vehicular, así como a las pequeñas y medianas empresas. “La decisión del Gobierno de llevar gas natural al sur del país, especialmente al Cusco, no se detendrá”, subrayó el ministro Tamayo.
El titular del sector llegó a esta ciudad para informar sobre la culminación del contrato de concesión del Gasoducto Sur Peruano (GSP), debido a que el consorcio encargado no logró obtener la totalidad de recursos para financiar la obra.
“El Gobierno cumplirá con todo lo que legalmente corresponda para que la nueva licitación de la construcción del gasoducto del sur, que estará a cargo de un comité especial de Proinversión, se concrete en un proceso transparente”, destacó Tamayo Flores.
Ante este nuevo escenario, el titular del Ministerio de Energía y Minas (MEM) reafirmó que “se anularán los cobros en los recibos de luz por el gasoducto, que vienen afectando a los usuarios del Cusco y de otras regiones del país”.
De otro lado, indicó que se ejecutará una carta fianza por 262 millones de dólares debido a que el consorcio encargado del GSP no cumplió con lo establecido en el contrato. “Se trata de la mayor carta fianza que se haya ejecutado alguna vez en el Perú, como una penalidad de que no cumplieron lo que ofrecieron”, informó Tamayo.
Finalmente, anunció que en los próximos días se nombrará a una empresa que valorizará las obras del GSP que se han avanzado hasta el momento, para determinar el monto invertido por el consorcio.
Reuniones con autoridades
A fin de explicar la situación actual del GSP y los nuevos esquemas que ejecutará el Gobierno para llevar gas natural al Cusco y otras regiones del país, el ministro Tamayo sostuvo reuniones de trabajo con autoridades y congresistas de la región Cusco.
De esta manera, se reunió con el gobernador regional Edwin Licona, el alcalde provincial Carlos Moscoso y los alcaldes distritales de Santiago y Wuanchaq, Franklin Sotomayor y Willy Cuzmar, respectivamente. También participaron los congresistas por la región Cusco Wilbert Rozas, Nelly Cuadros, Benicio Ríos, Armando Villanueva y Edgar Ochoa.

1) Previously the machines had AC Clutch and AC Induction motor i.e. 400 Watt to 500 watt consumption per hour. Now, I have used DC motor 50 watt to 100 watt consumption per hours
.
2) The size of DC motor now is which is much smaller than the AC motor used previously. The size of the table has also been reduced accordingly.
3) The battery of 70 Ampere 12 volt can be charged with single solar panel of 75 Watt and this can work for 10 hours where there is no electricity/ rural areas.
4) In cities, AC to DC converter would be used to run the motor.
5) The DC motor can work on small invertors also.
Overall, the idea of operating industrial sewing machines on DC motors is very beneficial and this project would be helping many lives in future
I am a 51 years old business man working in the field of Industrial Sewing Machines since 1977, i.e. when my age was just 14 years. After passing my 8th class, I started operating Button Hole and Button Stitch machines. That time the cost of making one button hole and putting one button was 2 paisa each. The more button holes and buttons were stitched, the more money I would make. This was my only source of earning bread and butter, but at times I would end up earning nothing in the day because of electricity failures and operational dysfunctions in the machines for which there were hardly any repairers around at that time as the machines were not made in India . After making lot of efforts, I was able to understand and fix some of the common problems myself that occurred in the machines. This helped me to great extend as I was no longer dependent on getting the machines repaired from outside or buying new machines. But the problem of electricity failures persisted. However, there was no solution to this that time. I moved on in life and my business, gradually got into sale and servicing of all kinds of Industrial Sewing machines and progressed.
But I wished if I could still do something that could help people like me at large who are till date struggling great deal and ending up compromising on their bread and butter because these high-load industrial machines like Button Hole, Button Stitcher, Overlock, Bartake, Feedoarm, Double-needle, Zig-zag, Belt machine, Elastic inserting machine, Snap button machine etc. do not work without electricity. Each machine consumes about 400 Watt of electricity per hour. Using these industrial sewing machines on present day generators, invertors and solar plants is possible, but that requires huge investment, set-up and space. Consequently, the profit becomes small. So this was not a welcoming and exciting idea.
I was constantly thinking of some other way by which these high-load industrial sewing machines could perform on low-load/ less energy and should be portable so that it could be used anywhere, no matter that place is connected with regular power source or not.
The whole idea was to make these industrial sewing machines available, accessible and operational in the most under developed areas and also save energy. For discussions, understanding and research on this proposal, I visited companies in abroad during 2001, 2002, 2004, 2007 but they suggested that the power consumption can be reduced to 50% but this was not enough, as this meant that each machine would still consume 200 watt per hour. I aimed to reduce the power consumption by 80% so I continued making efforts. After lots of research and experiments, I have finally been able to achieve success. Now all such high-load industrial sewing machines could be operated only at the consumption of 75 Watt per hour.

Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO Islamabad launched the project “Mobile Learning Project for Teacher’s Professional Development” today as formal collaboration in the presence of senior government officials, Nokia representatives and UNESCO representatives. As part of this program, UNESCO and Nokia are joining hands, where Nokia is providing its mobile phones and its application “Nokia Education Delivery (NED) for UNESCO’s project on ‘use of ICT for professional development of public school teachers’ in remote areas.
Since 2011 NED has turned into an open source solution to improve livelihoods, and in order to support such mobile learning innovations to be filled with life in Pakistan, The project will be implemented by AGAHI, a UNESCO partner and a non-profit foundation working in the area of communication and media policy design.
Nokia developed NED to allow using a mobile phone to access and download videos and other educational materials from a constantly updated education library. Operating in hundreds of schools and having reached millions of students in the Philippines, Tanzania, Chile and Colombia, Nokia Education Delivery has been shown to improve study results and increase retention among students.
This collaboration is part of the agreement signed last year between UNESCO and Nokia at international level to promote the use of mobile technologies to further the objectives of “Education for All”. As part of this agreement Nokia is developing applications and new Mobile technologies offering access to information and enrich learning environments at global level.
In Pakistan, through the project “Mobile Learning for Teachers” Nokia’s Education Delivery application will help UNESCO to enable the delivery of high- quality educational materials to teachers who lack training and resources though mobile phones giving an opportunity to teachers to train themselves on the same level as professionally competent teachers.

Speaking about the launch of NED program, Ulrike Vott Nokia Sustainability Manager for Middle East said, “Nokia Education Delivery facilitates education in a fun and interactive way. In addition to the NED software, Nokia offers program implementation support for the benefit of Pakistan’s education landscape.” The Nokia Education Delivery software system has two modules. The first module is installed on a Nokia mobile phone and contains a browse able catalog of educational videos. The second module is installed on the computer of the education administrator. It manages the organization’s mobile video library, so that videos can be added, deleted and updated. It also provides information on the usage of different videos.”
This unique pilot project for Pakistan has been initiated by UNESCO and AGAHI aims at using Mobile phones as medium for training teachers, where the teachers in remote areas will be equipped with devices, SIMs, a software solution and high quality educational content. The course for training and capacity building will be developed into video files and will be transmitted step by step according to curriculum on the phones provided to teachers. Over the course of the training period, teachers will be tested via SMS on regular basis and as an incentive, those who will score highest in tests will receive free mobile top ups. At the end of the course, test scores of all teachers will be aggregated and the passing teachers will be awarded certificate in the final workshop.

This high level side event organized at the helm of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly continues to advocate the nature of the 2030 Agenda—‘country-led and country-owned,’ as reflected during the UNDG high level event during the HLPF 2017 earlier this year.
UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed in her key note remarks stated, “We have hit the SDGs walking – not yet running – and we need to pick up the pace. Progress will only be achieved through genuine and meaningful partnerships.”
Host of the event, Mr. Achim Steiner, the UNDG Chair and the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said, "In the SDGs we have found a common language in identifying the challenges and opportunities in development. We need new partnerships- we need investment bankers to work with rural farmers, policy makers with activists."
The side event also marked the launch of the 2016 UNDG results report: Lift Off: Agenda 2030—Shared Results of the UNDG in 2016. The new report captures the collective results and impact achieved by the UN Development System through 131 UN Country Teams supporting 165 countries and territories, as well as by the UNDG at the regional and global levels. The best way to prevent cyber bullying in schools is through implementing an actual law that prohibits this behavior on school grounds. Many states have implemented laws similar to this one where cyberbullying is banned on all school owned electronic devices. These laws help prevent cyberbullying by stating that cyberbulling is illegal on the grounds that it will “create a hostile environment” and infringe on the rights of the “victim.”

Kavalcare Solar System for Jhpiego Mid-Wife Clinic Dec8, 2014
Every year, 12,000 women in Pakistan die of birth complications. The Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Services Component, implemented by MCHIP/Jhpiego, aims at preventing maternal, newborn, and child deaths by ensuring skilled birth attendance (SBA) through a total market approach, empowered community, timely referral of obstetric and neonatal complications to an emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) facility, and improved access to child care.
Lack of electricity in remote areas is a major issue that often leads to obstetric complications and newborn deaths. Refrigerated storage is vital for the effectiveness of life saving drugs and vaccines. Ice boxes are used in remot areas of this purpose but it is an ineffective method especially when easy availability of ice is a problem. To overcome these issues, Lodhie Foundation in association with Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program/JHPIEGO, extended its Kavalcare program and provided a Solar Powered System to a remote clinic located at village Haji Usman Jhakro near Makli, District Thatta. System provides sufficient power to operate a small refrigerator, a fan and 3 lamps 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It was designed, manufactured and installed by Shaan Technologies private Limited Karachi. After installation of Solar System in August 2014, this small remote clinic is serving a community of 10,000 plus persons who lives in village Haji Usman and surrounding areas. On an average 10 patients visits this clinic each day. Clinic also provides up to 15 birth attendance and new born care in a month.

The implementation of the weather index insurance project by the FAO working with a private firm -ZimNat Insurance Company has helped a number of households in Goromonzi District. Here farmers receive their pay outs from ZimNat through the texta cash mobile money platform which also offered them an opportunity to be part of the banking system.

Agahi to implement the Nokia-UNESCO Mobile Learning initiative to deliver quality education to teachers
Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO collaborate to launch Mobile Learning for Teacher’s in Pakistan using Nokia Education Delivery App to facilitate teacher training via mobile phones
Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO Islamabad launched the project “Mobile Learning Project for Teacher’s Professional Development” today as formal collaboration in the presence of senior government officials, Nokia representatives and UNESCO representatives. As part of this program, UNESCO and Nokia are joining hands, where Nokia is providing its mobile phones and its application “Nokia Education Delivery (NED) for UNESCO’s project on ‘use of ICT for professional development of public school teachers’ in remote areas.
Since 2011 NED has turned into an open source solution to improve livelihoods, and in order to support such mobile learning innovations to be filled with life in Pakistan, The project will be implemented by AGAHI, a UNESCO partner and a non-profit foundation working in the area of communication and media policy design.
Nokia developed NED to allow using a mobile phone to access and download videos and other educational materials from a constantly updated education library. Operating in hundreds of schools and having reached millions of students in the Philippines, Tanzania, Chile and Colombia, Nokia Education Delivery has been shown to improve study results and increase retention among students.
This collaboration is part of the agreement signed last year between UNESCO and Nokia at international level to promote the use of mobile technologies to further the objectives of “Education for All”. As part of this agreement Nokia is developing applications and new Mobile technologies offering access to information and enrich learning environments at global level.
In Pakistan, through the project “Mobile Learning for Teachers” Nokia’s Education Delivery application will help UNESCO to enable the delivery of high- quality educational materials to teachers who lack training and resources though mobile phones giving an opportunity to teachers to train themselves on the same level as professionally competent teachers.
Speaking about the project, UNESCO Director, Kozue Kai Nagata said, “In 21st century Public- private partnerships are enjoying growing attention and support as a new and sustainable modality for development. We are confident to collaborate with Nokia to provide us with the best platform to train public school teachers. Nokia Education Delivery is fit to match our need of delivering quality training to a large number of public school teachers across Pakistan through the project named “Mobile Learning for Teachers”
Amir Jahangir, President AGAHI and a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, shared his views on the launch that “Pakistan is a knowledge starved country, where universal education has its own challenges. To meet the target of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) on education, Pakistan needs to address its education challenges through innovation and technology which can reach to a larger population with cost effective solutions”.
Speaking about the launch of NED program, Ulrike Vott Nokia Sustainability Manager for Middle East said, “Nokia Education Delivery facilitates education in a fun and interactive way. In addition to the NED software, Nokia offers program implementation support for the benefit of Pakistan’s education landscape.” The Nokia Education Delivery software system has two modules. The first module is installed on a Nokia mobile phone and contains a browse able catalog of educational videos. The second module is installed on the computer of the education administrator. It manages the organization’s mobile video library, so that videos can be added, deleted and updated. It also provides information on the usage of different videos.”
This unique pilot project for Pakistan has been initiated by UNESCO and AGAHI aims at using Mobile phones as medium for training teachers, where the teachers in remote areas will be equipped with devices, SIMs, a software solution and high quality educational content. The course for training and capacity building will be developed into video files and will be transmitted step by step according to curriculum on the phones provided to teachers. Over the course of the training period, teachers will be tested via SMS on regular basis and as an incentive, those who will score highest in tests will receive free mobile top ups. At the end of the course, test scores of all teachers will be aggregated and the passing teachers will be awarded certificate in the final workshop.
AGAHI is UNESCO implementing partner in Pakistan. A not for profit, AGAHI specializes in creating communication, information and media policy design tools, that enables the stakeholders to engage in information collaboration on knowledge-based platforms. AGAHI works in building the capacity of knowledge workers in creating content based on best practices to disseminate information in building a more integrated knowledge ecosystem.
