These photos are the last of my series of Loon photos. My next camping trip, I hope to have some sunlight. All these Loon shots were taken under very smoky skies, which made the images a bit dark.

Common Loon ( (Gavia immer)-2_1920-
Mecosta County, Michigan
This series of Common Loon photographs were taken on my Loon Photography Sessions and are part of a series taken from incubation, through out the summer until the young left the lake for fall migration. These photos are from incubating the eggs to 4 weeks old. Stay tuned for more photos of the youngs progress as autumn and eventually winter creeps in.

Some things take an explanation. I was watching this loon hunting in shallow water very near rocky shore, when its hunt got frenzied. I snapped a few photos--and did not even see the fish at the time--and then the loon was gone, hunting further away. All I can suppose is that the loon spotted the fish and, in the moving water, made some stabs at it, only to realize it was dead. Now I don't know if loons don't eat dead prey, but I'm assuming this one passed under the floating fish, which came to rest on its back as it rose to the surface. MAYBE

Common Loon, Gavia immer, 32 in. / 81.28 cm. Generally UNCOMMON. Nests on deep clear forest lakes large enough to provide fish for a family and have enough room for a flapping, running takeoff. Winters on open water of large clear lakes, open ocean and bays. The most commonly seen loon species. Handheld.

Neben einem sehr interessanten Personenverkehr herrscht zwischen Pragersko und Zidani Most auch ein reger Güterverkehr. In der Regel fährt westwärts immer ein Güterzug circa 10 Minuten nach dem Regionalzug nach Zidani Most oder Dobova, damit der Güterzug ohne Halt von Pragersko bis nach Ljubljana durcheilen kann. Ende Oktober sind die Schatten bereits um halb 5 ziemlich lang; obwohl ich damit gerechnet habe, dass der Güterzug der nach dem LP 2917 kommen muss wird auch der letzte Zug für diesen herrlichen Fototag, dachte die Sonne anders und verabschiedete wenige Sekunden nach dem Durchfahrt des Lokalzuges, der an diesem Tag aus 312.129/130 bestand.
Ein Komment von einem Freund: der immer nur Desiros fotografiert, dem macht immer wieder ein Desiro das Licht aus! Wie wahr!
Besides a colorful passenger service consisting of a some Pendolino trains, a few loco-hauled Eurocitys, Flirt 4 EMUs and lots of … lots of Desiros, a couple of freight trains also pass through the Savinja-valley. Usually, a freight train follows the hourly regional service after 10 minutes so that these trains have green lights through all the way to Ljubljana. As at the end of October, the shadows become quite long around half 5, I supposed that the freight train, whatever it will be, that comes after the LP 2917 will the last one for this day. Well, the Sun decided to take farewell after a few seconds of the pass-by of LP2917, which was composed of 312.129/130 on this wonderful day.
This young loon suddenly turned up in the middle of The Hague (Netherlands) in. Not at all shy and clearly finding food in the canals.

Ze is onderweg van de chemische fabrieken in Kastl / Burghausen naar Mühldorf am Inn.
Met deze foto sloten we een heerlijke dag in de Bayerische Chemiedreieck dik tevreden af. We kregen die vrijdag 14 goederentreinen voor de lens... het was mooi geweest, tijd voor een lekker hapje eten.
De volgende dag op weg naar onze eigenlijke bestemming: de diesellijnen in Oostenrijk.
Maar niet voordat de volgende ochtend nog een keer een 294-er op foto mocht... de Flaschenzug zou immers ook op zaterdag rijden...

The juvenile Common Loon was feeding in a small pond off of Gillies Lake in the Gillies Lake Conservation Area located in the City of Timmins Northeastern Ontario Canada
To protect the loons on lakes we visit, boats should be kept well away from swimming birds, particularly when they are with chicks that are too young to dive or fly. Some shoreline areas should be left undisturbed to accommodate loon nests, and boaters passing these areas should travel at speeds that do not cause wash. Seaplanes should come and go as far from nesting areas as possible, taxiing to other parts of the lake. Anglers have the responsibility of using non-lead sinkers and of ensuring that no hooks or lines are left unattended or abandoned.

Adult Common Loon (Gavia immer) is busy early and often catching minnows, small fish and crayfish for two growing chicks. Here it is swimming by with a crappie for the nearby chick. Taken in Tomahawk, Wisconsin (Lincoln County) on August 10, 2014.
First found by Catherine Temple and Don Gayman on the Clearwater River, Lewiston, Nez Perce county, Idaho ,USA
This seems a bit of a strange plumage very similar to a bird that drew some discussion in November 2013
