Gavia immer. This should really be titled Common Loon as it was taken in New Jersey, North America, but I’ve stuck with its European name. It was feeding in the sheltered part of an estuary, which afforded relatively close views. The lighting was poor so not a great shot of this much photographed species. I thought I’d post it as it’s the only one I’ve seen in summer plumage close enough to photograph. Its’ main range is in North America where it breeds on lakes in summer. It’s breeding range also extends to some arctic and sub-arctic parts of the north Atlantic. It winters on both coasts of America as well the Atlantic coast of Europe.
I have published my novel.
It is already available in English, Spanish, French, German, and Japanese. Currently, the Simplified Chinese version is under translation.I

Der republikanische Präsidentschaftskandidat Justin Bradford wird während einer Rede angeschossen. Beinahe zur selben Zeit wird in Los Angeles auch der frühere Präsident Owen Reed Opfer eines Attentats.
Zwei Schüsse, die eine Nation entzweien.
Doch Justin überlebt wie durch ein Wunder.
Was sein Leben rettet, ist eine selbst weltweit äußerst seltene Blutgruppe ― Bombay-Blut.
Diejenige, die dieses Blut spenden kann, ist Anaya Patel, eine Community-Art-Facilitatorin aus Brooklyn.
Das Blut einer einzelnen Frau berührt das Schicksal einer Nation.
Dieser Zufall zieht sie, als wäre er vielleicht nie ein Zufall gewesen, nach und nach in das Zentrum eines gewaltigen Ereignisses.
Terrorismus, Wahlkampf, Einwanderung, Blut, Erinnerung, Gebet.
Menschen, die an Zerstörung glauben, und Menschen, die am Ende der Zerstörung die Leere sehen.
Ein Plan, der als Rache beginnt, lässt irgendwann die Grenze zwischen Erlösung und Nichts verschwimmen.

A smoldering current of xenophobia within the country.
A society breaking further apart.
Using all of it, a plan to collapse America from within begins to move forward in silence.
Republican presidential candidate Justin Bradford is shot during a speech. Almost at the same time, in Los Angeles, former President Owen Reed is also gunned down.
Two gunshots split the nation in two.
Yet Justin miraculously survives.
What keeps him alive is one of the rarest blood types in the world: Bombay blood.
The person able to provide that blood is Anaya Patel, a community art facilitator working in Brooklyn.
The blood of one woman touches the fate of a nation.
That coincidence, as if it had never truly been coincidence, begins to draw her toward the center of an enormous event.
Terrorism, elections, immigration, blood, memory, and prayer.
Those who believe in destruction, and those who have seen the emptiness left beyond it.
A plan that began as revenge gradually blurs the boundary between salvation and nothingness.
The night of Manhattan.
The light of Brooklyn.
Memories left behind by the river.
The city continues to shine as if nothing has happened.
Yet beneath its feet, a low sound no one can hear is still ringing.
What does revenge take away?
Whom does prayer save?
And where do human beings go, carrying what they have lost?

Mais Justin survit miraculeusement.
Ce qui lui sauve la vie est un groupe sanguin extrêmement rare dans le monde : le sang Bombay.
La seule personne capable de lui donner ce sang est Anaya Patel, facilitatrice d’art communautaire active à Brooklyn.
Le sang d’une femme touche soudain au destin d’une nation.
Ce hasard, comme s’il n’avait finalement jamais été un hasard, attire peu à peu Anaya elle-même au centre d’un événement immense.
Terrorisme, élections, immigration, sang, mémoire, prière.
Ceux qui croient en la destruction, et ceux qui finissent par voir le vide laissé au-delà de la destruction.
Un plan né comme une vengeance brouille peu à peu la frontière entre salut et néant.

Les souvenirs laissés au bord du fleuve.
La ville continue de briller comme si rien ne s’était passé.
Mais sous ses pieds, un son grave, que personne n’entend, continue de résonner.
Que prend la vengeance ?

Et vers où les êtres humains se dirigent-ils, en portant avec eux ce qu’ils ont perdu ?

くそ、手の震えがおさまらねー
隣のやつに気づかれてねーだろーなー、ぶるってんの。
鉛筆のてっぺんがぶるってるよ。やべー、オレ。
「それでは、はじめてください」
一１年前ー
新田塾ー成田校
三者面談。
塾長。そして、主人公、神崎ユウ。
母、神崎 沙織。
塾長「どーしても、マーチですか。ちょっとどうかなー」
試しの試験で偏差値３５。
周囲の高校生。近所にある進学校の生徒たちが、聞こえるように、
「これから、マーチだって」（笑）
「もうみんな2年からやってるのにな」（聞こえるように言う）
母「あ、あのーまぁー本人がそう言ってまして～」
塾長「第二志望って、ちなみにー」
間髪入れず、

千葉県八街市、ユウの2階の部屋。
父「ユウ、お母さんがユウはどこの大学に行きたいんだろうねって、ちょっと心配してたぞ」
ユウ「この前、言ったじゃん、マーチだよ、マーチ」
父、階下のお母さんへ声を張り上げる
「かーさーん、ユウは、マーチ受けるってよー」
母「マーチって、あのー、千葉商科大学のとなりにある東京マーチ大学？」
父「そうなのか？ ユウ？」
「たぶん、それじゃない」
父「違うってさー」
母「おかあさん、混乱しちゃうわー」
ユウ「ごめん、俺が言い方間違ったわ。明治大学。第一希望は」
父「かーさーんー」
母「はーいーー」
父「ユウは、明治大学受けるってさー」
母、それを聞いて、二階へ駆け上がってきて、
「おかあさん、その大学知ってるわー聞いたことあるー」
父、右手を胸の辺りで垂直に伸ばし、首を左右に振る。
「ジョーダンじゃないよー」
ユウ「は？」
父「ユウ、知らないのか？ お前、明治、遠ざかるぞ。たけちゃんマンは明治だ」
母「お父さん、なつかしー。サえてるー」
ユウ「。。。。。。。」
父「じゃ、これはどうだ？」
父、ギターのストロークを真似しながら、
「お、お、お、おー、ラーイドタイム！」
母「素敵ータツローねー」
ユウ「曲は知ってるけど、オンが抜けてるよ」
父「ユウ、そんな難しいことは考えるな」
ユウ「大事だろ、そこは」
母「おかあさん、うれしいわー、たけちゃんマンとタツローの後輩になるのね。ステキー」
父「お父さんも、うれしいぞー」窓をがらっと開けて、
「うちの子は、明治受けまーす！」
ユウ「やめろって。恥ずかしい。ちなみに受けるのは誰でもできるだろ」
父母、動きがストップ。
父「ユウ、大学って誰でも受けれるのか？ 母さん、そうなのか？」
母「そうみたいね」
父、また窓の外に向かって、
「明治大学は、だれでも受けれまーすっ！！」
ユウ「だからやめろって」
父「間違ったから訂正しとかないとな」
母「ユウ、おとうさんが正しいですよ」

可奈、iPhoneの探す機能で、ユウの位置を確認。まだ自宅。自宅？？？

ディズニーランド前、恋人同士だけでなく、家族などの笑顔が溢れている。
どっと落ち込む可奈。でも、開き直って、顔を上げる。
仕方ないよ、受験だし。帰るっ！
「ごめん、寝坊したわ」
可奈が振り返ると、ユウが立っている。
寝巻きのスウェットとジャージで参上。
それは可奈が2年前にプレゼントしたスウェットとジャージ。寝巻きだ。高校のジャージと大差なし。
「なんでそのカッコなの？」
「起きて、速攻で電車乗ってきた」
「スマホは？」
「財布持って、突っ走って、電車乗って、気づいたら忘れてた。ほら、八街ってさ、電車一本逃すと即死だから」
佳奈、呆然としている。ユウは辺りを見回して、
「しっかし、さみーな。スウェット一枚とか、やばいわ」
「もう」可奈、自分のコートを脱いで、ユウにかける。
「ありがと」
「この時期、風邪ひいたら、大学、落ちるかもよ？」
ユウ、口元に軽い笑みを浮かべ、
「可奈、オレは絶対に落ちない。絶対にオレはマーチへ行く。そもそも風邪をビビるぐらいならここに来ねーわ」
可奈、ゆっくり近づき頬をユウの胸に寄せる。ユウに聞こえるか聞こえないかぐらいで、小さく、バカ、と呟く。
ユウ、佳奈の耳元に囁く。
「もしも、マーチ、落ちたら、いっしょにずっと落ちてくれるか？」
佳奈、真剣な目でユウを見上げ、小さく頷き返し、目を閉じる。
ユウ、少し膝を落として、唇を重ねる。

Nachdem es am Vormittag im Altmühltal eher an Verkehr mangelte, entschieden Lukas und ich uns nach Treuchtlingen in die Ausfahrt Richtung Ansbach zu fahren. Dort angekommen kamen auch Prompt die Meldungen das sowohl der Kaiser- als auch der Flammentaurus zwischen München und Augsburg mit den Zielen Hamburg bzw Lübeck Gesichtet wurden. Die Freude war natürlich groß, da ich vom Kaiser nur einen Notschuss und den Flammentaurus noch nie zu gesucht bekommen hatte. Doch leider machten uns die Wolken bei beiden Loks einen Strich durch die Rechnung, sodass die Jagd nach einem Sonnenfoto der Loks weiter geht!

Immer wieder haben mich Lightshow und die Pyroeffekte begeistert. Für die Bühnenschow hatte ich sicherlich nicht den besten Platz, aber der Blick auf das Ganze war unbeschreiblich. 😎👍

The Porta Nigra (Latin for black gate) is a large Roman city gate in Trier, Germany. It is today the largest Roman city gate north of the Alps. It is designated as part of the Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The name Porta Nigra originated in the Middle Ages due to the darkened colour of its stone; the original Roman name has not been preserved. Locals commonly refer to the Porta Nigra simply as Porta.
The Porta Nigra was built in grey sandstone after 170 AD. The original gate consisted of two four-storied towers, projecting as near semicircles on the outer side. A narrow courtyard separated the two gate openings on either side. For unknown reasons, however, the construction of the gate remained unfinished. For example, the stones at the northern (outer) side of the gate were never abraded, and the protruding stones would have made it impossible to install movable gates. Nonetheless, the gate was used for several centuries until the end of the Roman era in Trier. It serves as an entrance to town.
In Roman times, the Porta Nigra was part of a system of four city gates, one of which stood at each side of the roughly rectangular Roman city. The Porta Nigra guarded the northern entry to the Roman city, while the Porta Alba (White Gate) was built in the east, the Porta Media (Middle Gate) in the south, and the Porta Inclyta (Famous Gate) in the west, next to the Roman bridge across the Moselle. The gates stood at the ends of the two main streets of the Roman Trier, one of which led north-south and the other east-west. Of these gates, only the Porta Nigra still exists today.
In the early Middle Ages the Roman city gates were no longer used for their original function and their stones were taken and reused for other buildings. Also, iron and lead braces were broken out of the walls of the Porta Nigra for reuse. Traces of this destruction are still clearly visible on the north side of the gate.
After 1028, the Greek monk Simeon lived as a hermit in the ruins of the Porta Nigra. After his death (1035) and sanctification, the Simeonstift monastery was built next to the Porta Nigra to honor him. To save it from further destruction, the Porta Nigra was transformed into a church: the inner court of the gate was roofed and intermediate ceilings were inserted. The two middle stories of the former gate were converted into the church naves: the upper story being of the monks and the lower story for the general public. The ground floor with the large gates was sealed, and a large outside staircase was constructed alongside the south side (the town side) of the gate, up to the lower story of the church. A small staircase led further up to the upper story. The church rooms were accessible through former windows of the western tower of the Porta Nigra that were enlarged to become entrance doors (still visible today). The top floor of the western tower was used as church tower, the eastern tower was leveled, and an apse added at its east side. An additional gate (the much smaller Simeon Gate) was built adjacent to the East side of the Porta Nigra and served as a city gate in medieval times.
In 1802 Napoleon Bonaparte dissolved the church in the Porta Nigra and the monastery beside it, along with the vast majority of Trier's numerous churches and monasteries. On his visit to Trier in 1804, Napoleon ordered that the Porta Nigra be converted back to its Roman form. Only the apse was kept, but the eastern tower was not rebuilt to its original height. Local legend has it that Napoleon originally wanted to completely tear down the church, but locals convinced him that the church had actually been a Gaulish festival hall before being turned into a church. Another version of the story is that they told him about its Roman origins, persuading him to convert the gate back to its original form.
In 1986 the Porta Nigra was designated a World Heritage Site, along with other Roman monuments in Trier and its surroundings.
The modern appearance of the Porta Nigra goes back almost unchanged to the reconstruction ordered by Napoleon. At the south side of the Porta Nigra, remains of Roman columns line the last 100 m of the street leading to the gate. Positioned where they had stood in Roman times, they give a slight impression of the aspect of the original Roman street that was lined with colonnades. It also has crowning cornice and parapet on its top.
The gate is today closed to cars, but stands right next to one of the main streets of Trier. In addition to the general pollution, the exhaust fumes of the passing cars have been damaging the stones for decades. Generally, however, the Porta Nigra is still in remarkable condition.
The Porta Nigra, including the upper floors, is open to visitors. In summer, guided tours are also offered by an actor dressed up as and portraying a centurion (a Roman army officer) in full armour.
New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, USA, is named after the city of Trier, Germany, and New Trier's logo depicts the Porta Nigra.

Die Porta Nigra (lateinisch für „Schwarzes Tor“) ist ein ab 170 n. Chr. errichtetes früheres römisches Stadttor am Porta-Nigra-Platz und Wahrzeichen der Stadt Trier. Der Name Porta Nigra stammt aus dem Mittelalter. Die Einwohner Triers bezeichnen das Tor meist nur als „Porta“.
Seit 1986 ist die Porta Nigra Teil des UNESCO-Welterbes in Trier. Des Weiteren ist sie ein geschütztes Kulturgut nach der Haager Konvention. Die Porta Nigra ist das besterhaltene römische Stadttor Deutschlands.
Der Bau des Stadttores wurde 170 n. Chr. als nördlicher Zugang zur Stadt Augusta Treverorum (Augustus-Stadt im Land der Treverer) begonnen. Die Datierung des Tores war lange umstritten und reichte vom 2. bis zum 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr. Im Januar 2018 konnte der Baubeginn aufgrund einer dendrochronologischen Untersuchung von Holzresten der Stadtmauer auf das Jahr 170 n. Chr. festgeschrieben werden, da diese 169/170 gefällt worden waren.
An verschiedenen Stellen finden sich in die Steine eingemeißelte Zeichen, von denen etliche auf dem Kopf stehen. Es handelt sich wohl um Steinmetzzeichen, die den Bau des Tores rekonstruieren helfen. Die Zeichen im Westturm enthalten Datumsangaben, allerdings ohne Jahresangabe, so dass eine absolute Datierung der Porta Nigra auf diese Weise nicht möglich ist. Über die Marken lässt sich aber die Zeit, die der Bau des Tores beanspruchte, abschätzen, da sie mehrere durchlaufende und übereinander liegende Quader kennzeichneten. Rechnet man diese Zeitangaben auf das gesamte Bauwerk hoch, berücksichtigt dabei eine sinnvolle Unterteilung in Baulose und schließt den Winter als Bauzeit aus, so wäre die Porta Nigra innerhalb von zwei bis vier Jahren als Rohbau fertiggestellt worden.
Endgültig fertiggestellt wurde der unter Kaiser Mark Aurel begonnene Bau nie. Beispielsweise sind die Bohrungen zur Aufnahme der Türangeln der Tore schon vorgefertigt worden. In die Drehachse der Tore ragen aber immer noch die Bossen der nicht fertig bearbeiteten Quader, so dass ein bewegliches Tor niemals eingebaut werden konnte.
Auch für das ungeübte Auge macht die Porta einen unfertigen Eindruck, zum Beispiel sind die auf der Fassade der Landseite vorgelagerten Halbsäulen im rohen Zustand belassen worden. Die Löcher, die mittelalterliche Metallräuber hinterließen, als sie die beim Bau verwendeten Eisenklammern und Bleivergüsse zur Wiederverwendung herausbrachen, verstärken diesen Eindruck noch. Insgesamt wurden für den Bau ca. 7200 Steinquader verwendet, deren größte bis zu sechs Tonnen wiegen.
Ging man früher oft davon aus, dass die Porta Nigra ebenso wie die römische Stadtmauer errichtet worden sei, als das nördliche Gallien im 3. Jahrhundert zunehmend durch germanische Angriffe bedroht war, ist die Mehrheit der Forscher heute der Ansicht, der Bau sei ein repräsentatives Großprojekt gewesen, das nicht primär Verteidigungszwecken dienen sollte und aufgrund finanzieller Engpässe unvollendet blieb.
Neben der Porta Nigra an der Nordseite der Stadt gab es noch die Porta Alba (Weißes Tor) an der Ostseite, Porta Media (Mitteltor) an der Südseite und die Porta Inclyta (Berühmtes Tor) an der Römerbrücke.
Der seit dem Mittelalter bezeugte Name Porta Nigra ist wohl von der dunklen Färbung abgeleitet, die durch die Verwitterung des Kordeler Sandsteins entstand. Erstmals erwähnt ist die Bezeichnung in den Gesta Treverorum aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. Der Abschnitt lautet in deutscher Übersetzung: „Sie (die Treverer) nannten es Marstor nach Mars, den sie als Gott des Krieges ansahen; wenn sie auszogen zum Krieg, marschierten sie zu diesem Tor hinaus. Schwarzes Tor aber wurde es genannt wegen der Trauer, in der sie, wenn sie aus dem Feld flohen, durch es zurückkehrten.“ Dabei ging der mittelalterliche Autor davon aus, dass Trier im Jahr 2003 vor Christus von den Treverern erbaut worden sei, obwohl die Stadt tatsächlich erst ca. 16 vor Christus von den Römern gegründet wurde. Die Begründung für den Namen des Tors, die der mittelalterliche Autor liefert, entspringt aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nur der Phantasie. Die Bezeichnung Porta Martis (Marstor) findet sich ebenfalls erstmals in diesem Text und wurde im Mittelalter alternativ gebraucht.
Der aus Sizilien stammende byzantinische Mönch Simeon ließ sich nach 1028 in dem Gebäude als Einsiedler nieder. Angeblich hatte er sich dort einmauern lassen. Nach seinem Tod 1035 wurde er im Erdgeschoss bestattet. Der Trierer Erzbischof Poppo erwirkte noch im selben Jahr seine Heiligsprechung durch den Papst. Dem Heiligen zu Ehren errichtete er das Simeonstift und baute das Tor zur Doppelkirche um, in deren Unterkapelle Simeon bestattet war. Die erhaltenen Stiftsgebäude gehen zum Teil auf das Jahr 1040 zurück. Es wurden zwei übereinander liegende Kirchenräume angelegt, von denen heute noch eine Apsis zu sehen ist. Der Orgelraum der Oberkirche am Westturm ist noch deutlich erkennbar. Da man für die Kirchennutzung nur einen Turm benötigte, wurde der zweite Turmaufbau der Porta Nigra abgerissen. Dies stellt die einzige bis heute sichtbare gravierende Änderung an der Bausubstanz dar.
Die eigentlichen Stadttore der Porta Nigra waren zugeschüttet worden, und man gelangte über eine Freitreppe direkt in das heute erste Stockwerk des Gebäudes. Die Funktion des Stadttores übernahm das Simeontor, das direkt im Osten an die Porta Nigra anschloss. Dieses im Vergleich zur Porta kleine Tor wurde durch den 1389 erbauten hohen Befestigungsturm, den so genannten Ramsdonkturm, geschützt.
Die Kirche und das Stift ließ Napoleon 1802 aufheben. Bei seinem Besuch in Trier im Oktober 1804 verfügte er den Rückbau der kirchlichen Anbauten. Von 1804 bis 1809 wurde das mittelalterliche Gebäude ausgekernt. Die Preußen vollendeten ab 1815 die Abbrucharbeiten, so dass nun wieder das römische Tor zu sehen ist. Lediglich den unteren Teil der mittelalterlichen Apsis ließ man aus denkmalpflegerischen Gründen stehen. Nach dem Abschluss der Arbeiten diente das Bauwerk als Triers erstes Antikenmuseum.
In den 1870er Jahren riss man die Stadtmauer und fast alle mittelalterlichen Stadttore ab, darunter auch das Simeonstor.
Am 11. September 1979 wurde die Porta Nigra symbolisch von Atomkraftgegnern besetzt.
1986 wurde das Tor zusammen mit anderen römischen Kulturdenkmälern in Trier und Umgebung von der UNESCO in die Liste des Welterbes aufgenommen.
Seit 2005 wird die Geschichte der Porta Nigra im Rahmen der Römischen Erlebnisführung „Das Geheimnis der Porta Nigra“ durch einen Schauspieler in der Paraderüstung eines Centurio interpretiert.
Am 27. Januar 2014 kam es zu einem Brand im Ostturm, nachdem zwei Dreizehnjährige einen Feuerwerkskörper von außen in ein Turmfenster geworfenen hatten und sich ein Vorhang für eine Erlebnisführung entzündete. Durch die Hitzeentwicklung kam es zu handtellergroßen Abplatzungen an einem Sandsteinquader.

A Common Loon (Gavia immer) surfaced very near to my kayak and went right into a wing stretch before I could zoom out to get the entire bird in the frame. While I prefer not to crop off wingtips or head, I liked this close-up look at the graphic patterns of its beautiful breeding plumage. I love these often curious birds that sometimes grace me with their presence while paddling local area lakes. Taken May 27, 2017 in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin.

Always delighted to see these birds out on the lake, though it's really tough to steady the canoe while trying to get shots at the same time. Oh...and then there's the constant breeze that keeps spinning you around.
