In today's Gospel Jesus tells His disciples: "Stay awake!" (Matthew 24:42)
The briefness of the statement and the exclamation mark at the end leave no room for misunderstanding. It isn't a request or something that would be rather nice to do, but is instead, a command. As such, it implies dire consequences for those who would disobey.
In this case, it is being unprepared for the Lord's return as judge of the living and the dead; a time we might suppose, where we have run out of opportunities for another chance.
The thought is frightening—for what one of us doesn't think there will always be at least a little time to set things in better order, but Jesus says, in order to be ready, we must stay awake!
To stay awake beyond what we are accustomed is often exhausting if not altogether impossible. Yet, we are told, "Stay awake!" and not just sometimes, but always!
How much these few words make me realize how much we are in need of God's help—and that we already have it! When the Blessed Trinity resides in us as Triune Lord and King, He never sleeps! His are the eyes that watch, His the ears that hear, His the spirit that prays and adores on our behalf.

US Bishops: Pelosi Got Church Teaching Wrong
House Speaker Misrepresents Catholic Understanding of Life
WASHINGTON, D.C., AUG. 26, 2008 (Zenit.org).- The chairmen of the U.S. bishops' Committees on Pro-Life Activities and Doctrine affirmed that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi misrepresented Church teaching on abortion during an interview on national TV.
Pelosi was asked on NBC-TV's "Meet the Press" on Sunday to comment on when life begins. She responded saying that as a Catholic, she had studied the issue for "a long time" and that "the doctors of the Church have not been able to make that definition."
Cardinal Justin Rigali, chairman of the U. Committee on Pro-Life Activities, and Bishop William Lori, chairman of the Committee on Doctrine, said her answer "misrepresented the history and nature of the authentic teaching of the Catholic Church against abortion."
They noted that the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, "Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law."
And the prelates explained: "In the Middle Ages, uninformed and inadequate theories about embryology led some theologians to speculate that specifically human life capable of receiving an immortal soul may not exist until a few weeks into pregnancy. While in canon law these theories led to a distinction in penalties between very early and later abortions, the Church's moral teaching never justified or permitted abortion at any stage of development.
"These mistaken biological theories became obsolete over 150 years ago when scientists discovered that a new human individual comes into being from the union of sperm and egg at fertilization. In keeping with this modern understanding, the Church teaches that from the time of conception -- fertilization -- each member of the human species must be given the full respect due to a human person, beginning with respect for the fundamental right to life."

Other bishops also released statements clarifying Church teaching.
Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington, D.C., noted that bishops are entrusted with the responsibility to interpret and teach Catholic doctrine.
"We respect the right of elected officials such as Speaker Pelosi to address matters of public policy that are before them, but the interpretation of Catholic faith has rightfully been entrusted to the Catholic bishops," he said in a statement. "Given this responsibility to teach, it is important to make this correction for the record. […]
"From the beginning, the Catholic Church has respected the dignity of all human life from the moment of conception to natural death."
And from Denver, Archbishop Charles Chaput and Auxiliary Bishop James Conley addressed an online letter to their faithful, titled "On the Separation of Sense and State: a Clarification for the People of the Church in Northern Colorado."
The letter affirms: "Ardent, practicing Catholics will quickly learn from the historical record that from apostolic times, the Christian tradition overwhelmingly held that abortion was grievously evil. In the absence of modern medical knowledge, some of the Early Fathers held that abortion was homicide; others that it was tantamount to homicide; and various scholars theorized about when and how the unborn child might be animated or 'ensouled.'
"But none diminished the unique evil of abortion as an attack on life itself, and the early Church closely associated abortion with infanticide. In short, from the beginning, the believing Christian community held that abortion was always, gravely wrong."
Cardinal Edward Egan released a statement this morning saying he was "shocked to learn" of Pelosi's remarks. He said her statements were "misinformed."
The cardinal affirmed that the unborn have "an inalienable right to live, a right that the speaker of the House of Representatives is bound to defend at all costs for the most basic of ethical reasons."
"Anyone who dares to defend that they may be legitimately killed because another human being 'chooses' to do so or for any other equally ridiculous reason," he added, "should not be providing leadership in a civilized democracy worthy of the name."

Before I get into the details, let me make a strong request — if you’re looking at these photos, and if you are getting any enjoyment at all of this brief look at some mundane Americana from 60+ years ago: find a similar episode in your own life, and write it down. Gather the pictures, clean them up, and upload them somewhere on the Internet where they can be found. Trust me: there will come a day when the only person on the planet who actually experienced those events is you. Your own memories may be fuzzy and incomplete; but they will be invaluable to your friends and family members, and to many generations of your descendants.
So, what do I remember about the year that I spent in Riverside? Not much at the moment, though I’m sure more details will occur to me in the days to come — and I’ll add them to these notes, along with additional photos that I’m tweaking and editing now (including some of the drive from Riverside to Omaha, where our family moved next), as well as some “real” contemporaneous photos I’ve found in family scrapbooks.
For now, here is a random list of things I remember:
1. I attended one school, somewhere in downtown Riverside, when my parents were looking for a house; and when they finally found a house out at the edge of town (at the base of the San Bernardino foothills), I was switched to a different school. This was typical; I usually attended two different schools in every city we lived in, and I attended a total of 17 schools before heading off to college.
2. While I eventually rode my bike to and from the second house to my school, I started off riding a school bus. A bunch of us kids would wait on a corner for the bus to arrive; and it was at the edge of a huge orange grove that seemed to stretch on forever. There were always a few rotten oranges lying on the ground, thoroughly rotten, and these substituted nicely for snowballs. There is nothing like the experience of being smacked in the stomach, of your fresh clean shirt, with a rotten orange.
3. Like most other suburban kids in the 1950s, I was allowed to do all sorts of things alone — as long as I returned home by dinner time. I could ride my bike anywhere I wanted, alone; I could hike way up into the hills alone (as long as I had a pocket-knife, which my father insisted I carry in case I was bitten by a rattlesnake). And I was allowed to sleep outside in the back yard, in a sleeping bag, virtually whenever I wanted to. The weather was always quite mild, the skies were clear (Los Angeles smog had not reached us in those days), and the stars were utterly amazing. There were shooting stars to watch, an experience I have never forgotten.
4. I discovered that marbles were excellent projectiles to shoot with one’s slingshot, and that they would actually travel in a more-or-less straight line. I became pretty good at shooting lizards with my slingshot; all I needed was an endless supply of marbles (because you could only shoot them once, at which point they would generally disappear somewhere). So I began practicing quite hard, played competitive games of marbles every day at school, and eventually amassed great quantities of the little round things.
5. Even better than lizards were spiders; they were everywhere, and they were relatively easy to catch. I don’t think any of them were dangerous, and in any case, none of them bit me. I sometimes put them in my pants pocket for the day, and I often brought them home. And I would put them in the dresser drawer with my socks and underwear; it seemed like a good place for them to relax. My mother discovered a couple of them one day, and was not impressed.
6. We had relatives in the city of Los Angeles, and made the 50-mile drive to visit them once or twice a year. We also made a 50-mile drive once or twice to visit San Juan Capistrano, which my parents thought was the most wonderful place in the world — mostly, they told me, because of the famous swallows that migrate each year from someplace in Argentina. In fact, I think they were impressed because they were old enough to like a 1940 hit song, “When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano,” which I couldn’t stand. If they had told me the place was the locale of the first Zorro novella (“The Curse of Capistrano,” published in 1919), I would have been much more impressed.
7. Riverside is where I got my first dog—a mutt named Blackie, that was part of a litter produced by the next-door neighbor’s dog. It provided an open invitation for me to visit the next-door neighbors whenever I wanted, and swim in their pool (a rarity in those days). At the end of our year in Riverside, Blackie moved with us to our next location — traveling all the way in a little house/bed that had been made for him in the World War II Jeep that Dad hitched to his Chevrolet.
8. Riverside is also where I had my first exposure, at school, to kids of other ethnic backgrounds. There were Asian kids, and black kids, and Latino kids (whom, sadly, my father referred to generically as “Mexicans,” but whom he also held in high respect because he remembered watching their comrades working harder and longer than any of the “white boys” in the rough mining and ranching camps on the Utah/Colorado border, where he had grown up). All of us were thrown together in the same classroom, all of us traveled to each other’s houses and neighborhoods after school, and nobody seemed to think it was unusual in any way.
9. I learned, to my enormous delight, that I *was* different in one special way: I was left-handed. During the pickup baseball games that we played constantly during recess, lunch, and after school, there were never enough baseball gloves for everyone, so everyone simply shared with everyone else (after all, if your team is at bat, you don’t need your baseball glove). But I was the only left-handed kid around, apparently the only one in the whole school; so nobody ever wanted to share my glove.

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

３ 原宿デザインフェスタで個展を開くまでに、毎月ひとつの作品を展示することにチャレンジ。
４ 作品とは、素材とシルエット。ファッションと似ている。

というタイトルが並んでいて、お時間がない方には、この締めに当たる『東京大学で学ぶ価値』だけでも読んで欲しい。
すばらしいです。
さすが、としかいいようがない祝辞です。
このラストパートで僕がもっとも惹かれたのは、もっともラストのテキストにあたるこの部分。
『 … 大学で学ぶ価値とは、すでにある知を身につけることではなく、これまで誰も見たことのない知を生み出すための知を身に付けることだと、わたしは確信しています。知を生み出す知を、メタ知識といいます。そのメタ知識を学生に身につけてもらうことこそが、大学の使命です。ようこそ、東京大学へ。』
このお話を読んで、さらに動画を拝見して確信したことは、僕が触れてきたアーティスト。
たとえば、ビートルズ、マイルスデイヴィス、ピカソ、芥川龍之介、モーツァルト。
こういった革新的な作品を発表し続けてきたアーティストらは、既存のアートを吸収し、再構成して、提出しています。
ここでいう『すでにある知から新たな知を生み出す。それをメタ知識という』
僕が好きなアーティストらが発表してきた革新的な作品群は、この『メタ知識』にあたります。
革新的な作品は、人の目を覚まし、震わせ、息を吹き込みます。
東京大学生に限らず、与えられた場所で自分の知のベストを尽くすことが、多くの人への貢献になります。
たとえばiPS細胞はそのベストな例だと僕は思っています。
なので、自分の知に溺れ、保身になるのではなく、知を晒して多くの人たちへ尽くしてください。
多くの人への貢献は、なかなか難しいかもしれません。
ならば、あなたの身近な人、たったひとりの人だけでも、ベストを尽くしてください。
僕は、若手のみなさんに心から期待しています。
人って、やれないことってないと僕は思っています。
まずは、なにかをやってみてください。

The Prayer of the Five Widows
An account after the Auca ambush in Ecuador, from CT's seventh issue.

This article originally appeared in the January 7, 1957, issue of Christianity Today—less than three months after the magazine's launch. It was posted June 15, 2015, to commemorate the death of Elisabeth Elliot.
On a beautiful Sunday afternoon a year ago, five young women were asking God for two things regarding their husbands: that they might be permitted to contact the Auca Indians again, and that they might be protected. As we sat in our jungle homes here in Ecuador, two in Arajuno, one in Shandia and two in Shell Mera, we little dreamed of the answer God was then giving. He answered both of those prayers, but, as is often the case with him whose thoughts are as far above ours as the heavens are high above the earth, his answer far transcended what we had in mind.
Silence on a Sand Strip
The second contact was given. Probably at about two-thirty in the afternoon at least ten Aucas arrived at the strip of sand where the men had set up their little camp. Having seen them some time earlier from the airplane, approaching the beach, the pilot had reported to his wife the anticipated contact. We can imagine the five, then, as the forest rang with their praises. They sang hymns together, committed themselves to the Lord once more and eagerly prepared for their longed for visitors. It was not long before savage yells, instead of hymns of praise, echoed through the forest, polished wooden spears slashed through the air and five young men lay dead on the Rio Curaray. Silence closed once more over the stand strip, and those beloved Indians returned nonchalantly to their thatched homes, to recount another killing to their waiting families.
The asked-for contact had been given. But what about the protection?
Protection from Disobedience
When the Lord Jesus prayed to His Father, as recorded in the seventeenth chapter of John, he asked, too, for protection for those whom the Father had given him. For what purpose? “. . . that they may be one, as we are.” Protection from what? “. . . that thou shouldst keep them from the evil one.” Each one of our five men, years before, had asked for the whole accomplishment of Gods will in him at any cost, to the end that Christ be glorified. The Evil One is determined, however, that Christ shall not be glorified. But, in making them obedient men, God had answered the prayer of his Son, the prayer of the men themselves and the prayer of their wives. The adversary did not succeed in turning them aside from Gods highest purpose. They were protected from that most fearful of all dangers, disobedience. They loved God above all else. “Herein is the love of God, that ye keep his commandments.”
The prayer of our hearts today, of the widows who remain, is the same, that Christ may be glorified.
Christ’s Glory in Some Aucas
First of all, we continue asking for that which motivated the men from the beginning of the project—that Christ may be glorified in some Aucas. The contact God gave to the five was only one step in the opening of the fast-closed doors to that tribe.
Nor was it the first step. Others had thought and prayed for years about them, asking for an entrance, flying over the territory in search of their whereabouts, seeking a way to carry to them the Word of Life.
Some of the five men had long borne them before the Lord, asking for their salvation and committing themselves to God for them.
Now, thousands of Christians in all parts of the world have learned of them and are praying.
For us who have been most closely touched by the death of the five, there could be no greater joy than to know at last that the blood of our husbands has been the seed of the Auca church. Our hearts go out to the very ones whose strong brown arms sent flying the lances that killed our loved ones, for we know that they walk in darkness, knowing not even the name of Him who is more than life to us. And how shall they hear without a preacher?
So we ask for those whom God has prepared to be sent to the Aucas and only those. A well-meaning but misguided effort could ruin further opportunities to enter the tribe. But because God has done a tremendous thing in taking five of His choicest servants in this incipient stage, we are bold to expect tremendous answers to prayer in the future. We believe He will send the Light to the Aucas and have given ourselves anew for that, if He should care to choose any one of us to go. We were wholly at one with our husbands in their desire to reach the Aucas and had it been possible, would gladly have accompanied them. The last thing on earth we would have wanted would have been to hinder them in obeying the command of Christ, which was as clear to us as it was to them. He was directingthe only issue at stake was obedience. Jesus made the conditions of discipleship unequivocal—“Forsake . . . Deny . . . Follow.” This is the price we are asked to pay.
Many speak of the five men as having made the “supreme sacrifice.” We do not think of it in that way. They would not have called it that. One of them wrote in his diary years ago, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” Jesus promised that whoever loses his life preserves it. Can we call this sacrifice? When we make a purchase, we pay the price, of course, but no one thinks of this as a sacrifice. How much less, then, when our lives, already paid for by Christ at tremendous sacrifice on his part, are offered to him? We lose nothing. We gain everything. Hence, we ask that God may choose those whom He wishes to carry the gospel to the Aucas, that they may be prepared by his Spirit, that they may not count their lives dear unto themselves, and that thereby the Aucas may be brought out of their bondage to know Jesus Christ, that he may be glorified in them.
Christ’s Glory in Us
We ask, further, that Christ may be glorified in us. “For we know that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the privilege He gave us in being the wives of men who were chosen to be slain for His sake. None of us is worthy. It is all of His grace, but we know that the Lamb is worthy, a thousand times, the lives of our husbands and of us. He chose to glorify himself in their death—may He now glorify Himself in our lives.
During those harrowing days when the rescue party was on its way to the beach, when we did not know what the next radio report would bring, we were conscious that whatever the outcome, God was determined to bring us to himself. He had promised, “When thou passest though the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee; when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned, neither shall the flame kindle upon thee, for I am the Lord thy God. . . . Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honorable, and I have loved thee.” How could we have proved the truth of that promise if there had been no waters? And what rivers could overflow but deep ones? And so, to show us that he meant what he said, to prove to us his love, this was what he sent, this thing which each of us had been sure she could never endure, the loss of the one who was as her own soul.
Purpose in the Stab of Pain
And how, then, can Christ be glorified in us through this experience? By our responding with thanksgiving to his dealings with us, by our declaration of our love to him in utter obedience, by our believing that his judgments are right, that he in faithfulness has afflicted us. We ask that we may go on in peace, as he has mercifully permitted us to do thus far. In talking together, we have often said that we did not want to miss one lesson which our loving Father would teach us by this thing. To us, the loss of our husbands is not a tragedy in itself—it is one more of our Father’s right judgments. But it would indeed be a tragedy if, in our failure to respond to him with love, trust, and praise, we should miss what he intended for us through it. We ask that we may know him, and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death. If, through the loss of our husbands, we may cause Christ to rejoice, to see in us the travail of his soul and be satisfied, we shall never call it sacrifice. Each day, when little things remind us, with a new stab of pain, that our husbands are gone, we turn these things into prayer—“Lord, by this, too, glorify thyself. For this, too, I thank thee and trust thee, knowing that there shall be glory, as thou has promised, through this suffering.”
Christ and the Little Ones
Not only do we ask that Christ be glorified in the Aucas and in us, but also in our children. Most of them will have no recollection of their fine fathers. But our Lord gave his word, “All thy children shall be taught of the Lord, and great shall be the peace of thy children.” We ask for his wisdom in training them, for his Spirit in us, that they may be as obedient as their fathers. How wonderful it would be if he should prepare one or more of them to go to the Aucas! We would give them to him for his use, asking that they come to know him as Savior and Lord at an early age. Far be it from us to withhold from the Lord the lives of these little ones, children of the men who did not withhold their own lives. May they sing from true hearts,
Faith of our Fathers, Holy Faith,
We would be true to Thee till death.
Wherever the Spirit Speaks
Finally, we ask that Christ be glorified in the lives of those to whom the Spirit of God has spoken because of the death of the five men. We have received letters from all over the world, telling of the impact of the event on one and another. But we have heard of few who have actually done anything about it, who have been changed by it. We pray earnestly that those who have heard the voice of the Lord may be obedient. We pray that young men who have been attracted by the “opportunities to use their talents for the Lord in the United States” may abandon themselves, with their talents, to Christ, for his use wherever he wants them. We pray that if any young wife is hesitating to commit her husband and family to God, through fear of loss, she may believe the words of our Lord Jesus, “Truly I say to you, there is no man who hath forsaken . . . who will not receive.” We have proved beyond any doubt that he means what he says—his grace is sufficient, nothing can separate us from the love of Christ We pray that if any, anywhere, are fearing that the cost of discipleship is too great, that they may be given to glimpse that treasure in heaven promised to all who forsake.
And all our supplication is “with thanksgiving”— for his great love, for the high privilege of serving him with all of our hearts, for having given us as husbands men who were true soldiers of Jesus Christ, men to whom we could look up in every respect, men who set for us a great example of faith that acts on what it believes. We look forward with joy to that day when God will reveal to us his complete plan, knowing that we shall see clearly that every step of the way was ordained to the end that Christ might be glorified. Our husbands already walk with him, their joy complete. We, too, shall see him face to face, and be satisfied.
This hath He done, and shall we not adore Him?
This shall He do and can we still despair?
Come let us quickly fling ourselves before Him,
Cast at His feet the burden of our care,
Flash from our eyes the glow of our thanksgiving,
Glad and regretful, confident and calm,
Then through all life, and what is after living,

The Brambling (Fringilla montifringilla) is a small passerine bird in the finch family. It is similar in size and shape to a Common Chaffinch. Breeding-plumaged male Bramblings are very distinctive, with a black head, dark upperparts, orange breast and white belly. Females and younger birds are less distinct, and more similar in appearance to some chaffinches. In all plumages, however, Bramblings differs from Chaffinches in a number of features such as having a white rump and an orange breast contrasting with a white belly. An additional difference for all plumages except breeding-plumaged male Bramblings is the bill colour - yellow in brambling, dull pinkish in Chaffinch.
Brambling are widespread, and in the breeding season, are foundthroughout the forests of northern Europe and Asia. It is migratory, wintering in southern Europe, north Africa, north India, northern Pakistan, China, and Japan. In Europe, it forms large flocks in the winter, sometimes with thousands or even millions of birds in a single flock. Such large gatherings occur especially if beech mast is abundant. (wikipedia)
Bramblings are winter visitors to Ireland, almost always associating with flocks of Chaffinches and other finches. The numbers of Bramblings wintering in Ireland vary from year to year depending on the weather and availability of food in Continental Europe. There are about 20-25 Brambling mixed in with a flock of 200+ Chaffinches on the main avenue into Powerscourt House and Gardens in Co. Wicklow. This photograph was taken while I was sitting in my car, which I was using as a blind. The Brambling is a species that is always wonderful to see. This is a male in winter plumage.

The Eurasian Curlew (Numenius arquata) is a wader in the large family Scolopacidae. It is one of the most widespread of the curlews, breeding across temperate Europe and Asia. In Europe, this species is often referred to just as the "curlew", and in Scotland known as the "whaup" in Scots. The familiar call is a loud curloo-oo.
The only similar species over most of the curlew's range is the Whimbrel (N. phaeopus). The Whimbrel is smaller and has a shorter bill with a kink rather than a smooth curve. Flying curlews may also resemble, albeit not existing in the same area, Bar-tailed Godwits (Limosa lapponica) in their winter plumages; however, the latter have a smaller body, a slightly upturned beak, and legs that do not reach far beyond their tail tips. The Eurasian curlew's feet are longer, forming a conspicuous "point". The curlew exists as a migratory species over most of its range, wintering in Africa, southern Europe and south Asia. Occasionally a vagrant individual reaches places far from its normal range, such as Nova Scotia and the Marianas. It is present all year in the milder climates of Ireland, the United Kingdom and its adjacent European coasts.
Formerly classified as a species of Least Concern by the IUCN, it was suspected to be rarer than generally assumed. Following the evaluation of its population size, the classification was found to be incorrect, and it was consequently promoted to Near Threatened status in 2008. Though it is a common bird, its numbers are noticeably declining. In Ireland, the breeding population is estimated to have declined by 86% in the last 30 years. (wikipedia)
The haunting cry of the Curlew is one of the most evocative and memorable sounds of the Irish landscape. For me, it is the sound of my childhood, when I would be out birdwatching during the winter months around Cork Harbour.
Sadly, these iconic birds have been suffering severe declines for many years in Ireland. Whilst they are still a regular sight along our coasts in winter when migrant birds from northern Europe come here to take advantage of our relatively mild winters, feeding in our estuaries and wetlands in large numbers, it is our resident breeding population that is now in danger of extinction. A terrible indictment of the country's (and governments) attitude to our natural heritage. Ireland's reputation for being "green" is, sadly, built on a myth.

This individual was feeding along the estuary in Dublin Bay before the rising tide forced the bird to fly over the Wooden Bridge and into the North Bull Island in Co. Dublin.
Honfleur is a commune in the Calvados department in Normandy en.normandie-tourisme.fr/normandy-tourism-109-2.html in northwestern France. It is located on the southern bank of the estuary of the Seine across from le Havre and very close to the exit of the Pont de Normandie. Its inhabitants are called Honfleurais. It is especially known for its old, beautiful picturesque port, characterized by its houses with slate-covered frontages, painted many times by artists, including in particular Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Johan Jongkind, forming the école de Honfleur (Honfleur school) which contributed to the appearance of the Impressionist movement. The Sainte-Catherine church, which has a bell tower separate from the principal building, is the largest church made out of wood in France. The first written record of Honfleur is a reference by Richard III, Duke of Normandy, in 1027. By the middle of the 12th century, the city represented a significant transit point for goods from Rouen to England. Located on the estuary of one of the principal rivers of France with a safe harbour and relatively rich hinterland, Honfleur profited from its strategic position from the start of the Hundred Years' War. The town's defences were strengthened by Charles V in order to protect the estuary of the Seine from attacks from the English. This was supported by the nearby port of Harfleur. However, Honfleur was taken and occupied by the English in 1357 and from 1419 to 1450. When under French control, raiding parties often set out from the port to ransack the English coasts, including partially destroying the town of Sandwich, in Kent, England, in the 1450s. At the end of the Hundred Years' War, Honfleur benefited from the boom in maritime trade until the end of the 18th century. Trade was disturbed during the wars of religion in the 16th century. The port saw the departure of a number of explorers, in particular in 1503 of Binot Paulmierde Gonneville to the coasts of Brazil. In 1506, local man Jean Denis departed for Newfoundland island and the mouth of the Saint Lawrence. An expedition in 1608, organised by Samuel de Champlain, founded the city of Quebec in modern day Canada. After 1608, Honfleur thrived on trade with Canada, the West Indies, the African coasts and the Azores. As a result, the town became one of the five principal ports for the slave trade in France. During this time the rapid growth of the town saw the demolition of its fortifications on the orders of Colbert. The wars of the French revolution and the First Empire, and in particular the continental blockade, caused the ruin of Honfleur. It only partially recovered during the 19th century with the trading of wood from northern Europe. Trade was however limited by the silting up of the entrance to the port and development of the modern port at Le Havre. The port however still functions today. The C.E. Long House (also known as the Peterman House) in Opa-locka, Florida, was designed in 1926 by architect Bernhardt E. Muller and built in 1927 as part of the city's unique Moorish Revival development.
The house was constructed by Carl E. Long and his wife Hazel R. Long. Carl Long played an active role in the early development of the municipality, serving as a town councilman, a superintendent at the Opa-locka Public Works Department, and later as the acting chief of the Opa-locka Police Department in 1928.
Key Historical Details
Designed by Bernhardt E. Muller, who created dozens of Moorish Revival buildings featuring signature domes, minarets, and exotic motifs envisioned by aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss.
Historical Recognition: The structure was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 17, 1987, as a contributing property within the Opa-locka Thematic Resource Area.

Reflejo de Luarca - Asturias //
Situación: El municipio de Valdés se encuentra ubicado en la costa occidental de Asturias. Su gran riqueza y diversidad natural se ve sintetizada en su eslogan turístico: La mar, el río y la montaña. La mar esculpe uno de los paisajes marinos más bellos del Principado; sus acantilados da paso a un sinfín de playas y de magnificas ensenadas como la del río Esva. Valles de extraordinaria belleza como el de Paredes, Muñas o sierras montañosas como Las Palancas, Estoupo o Belén de la Montaña.
Luarca, capital del concejo, es la villa Blanca de la Costa Verde. Luarca es una hermosa villa marinera que desde antaño ha tenido una intensa actividad comercial y pesquera entorno a la ballena. Son tipicos los barrios de pescadores como la Pescadería o el Cambaral donde se encuentra la Mesa de Mareantes.
Monumentos: Dentro de su arquitectura religiosa tenemos la iglesia parroquial de Santa Eulalia, situada en las proximidades del puerto En su lado norte se levanta un antiguo crucero de piedra, con las representaciones del Cristo Crucificado y Nuestra Señora del Niño. En la Villa se encuentra La ermita de la Virgen de la Blanca o de la Atalaya. Conserva en el ático una figura de la Virgen con el Niño del siglo XIV. En Trevías encontramos la iglesia de San Miguel guarda en su interior una bonita imagen de la Virgen de la Esperanza. Otras edificaciones religiosas importantes del concejo son: La iglesia parroquial de San Salvador de Barcia que data del siglo XIII. Nuestra Señora, en Méras de finales del XVII. San Pedro en Cadavedo, San Juan en Muñas de Arriba, y la de San Miguel en Canero, terminada en 1800 y que guarda rasgos decorativos barrocos. Su arquitectura civil y popular también es numerosa, pudiendo contemplar en el centro de la Villa, el Palacio y capilla del Marqués de Ferrera acogiendo en su interior la sala museo Jesús Villa Pastur, y un aula dedicada al paleolítico. La casa-palacio de los Gamoneda, del siglo XVIII, destacando su fachada, en Villademoros encontramos la torre del mismo nombre. Además de todas estas construcciones Valdés también nos deja grandes muestras del poder indiano, preferentemente en Villar y Barcelina, localidades próximas a la capital, entre las que podemos destacar Villa Barrera, Villa Argentina y Villa Teresa, en Villar, y Villa Rosario y Villa Excelsor en Barcelina.
Fiestas: El Rosario (15 de Agosto)
San Timoteo (22 de Agosto)
Multitud de celebraciones se suceden por todo el territorio Valdesano, sobre todo en la época estival, teniendo cada festejo una particularidad diferente. Así en la festividad de la Virgen del Rosario, tiene lugar una procesión marítima con posterior saleo con la imagen de la Virgen, tirándose posteriormente los jóvenes vestidos a la mar. Las fiestas de San Timoteo son una de las más concurridas del verano Astur, siendo el día 22 de Agosto su día grande, congregándose en el prau del patrón una infinidad de gentes asombrosa.
En la Vaqueirada de Aristébano, organizada conjuntamente con Tineo, tiene lugar una tradicional boda Vaqueira. También la celebración de La Regalina, tiene su nota característica, combinando bailes y cantos, realizados por las mozas solteras en honor de la patrona. Además de todos estos festejos, también son destacables en la Villa Blanca, los Carnavales y la Semana Santa, sin duda la más importante del Occidente Asturiano.
Costumbres: En relación con el Festival Vaqueiro y de la Vaqueirada, que tiene lugar el último domingo de julio en la localidad de Aristébano, se organiza una semana de actividades relacionada con la cultura vaqueira que mediante conferencias, exposiciones y publicaciones intenta dotar de contenido a los actos festivos del día de la vaqueirada, difundiendo los valores culturales y etnográficos de los antaño marginados vaqueiros de alzada.
Historia: Los datos más antiguos de la presencia humana en el Concejo de Valdés se remontan a las épocas prehistóricas, el yacimiento de Busto es hasta el momento presente, el sitio que ha dado los restos. También se han localizado restos industriales de estas mismas etapas en los sitios de Caroyas, Ribón, Paredes. También son numerosas las muestras artísticas que podemos encontrar en todo el concejo.
Valdés es un concejo asturiano que forma parte de la Comarca natural del Valle del Ese-Entrecabos, y es precisamente el río Ese o Esva el que le da nombre: Valdés es el Valle del río Es o Ese de los romanos, del que obtenían abundante oro para el imperio, pero la población de Valdés es tan antigua como la conquista de la tierra por los homínidos, ya que el yacimiento arqueológico del cabo Busto («Entre Cabos») (más o menos de la misma datación de Atapuerca
En la actualidad nos sigue cruzando de Sur a Norte el río Esva, con sus cada vez más codiciados salmones y peleonas truchas, aunque es el río Negro el que recorre la Villa, Luarca, capital del concejo, el que tiene más y más grandes, para disfrute de todos.
El territorio es un compendio de ríos, mar y montaña en un medio natural, eso nos permite tener unos productos de primerísima calidad: producimos la mejor leche gracias a nuestra cuidada cabaña lechera, pero nuestros pastos de media montaña también nos permiten producir una excelente carne. Los embutidos, el txosco y el butietxo.
De las mejores fabas de Asturias tenemos en nuestra gastronomía, la mejor fabada que se puede tomar.
¿Y del mar? los mejores mariscos son los de nuestras costas; son famosos los oricios y los percebes, junto con los centollos.
Pero Luarca merece una mención aparte, ya que resulta una villa urbanísticamente compensada a pesar de algunos desmanes del pasado, en la que los barrios de Pescadería y Cambaral ofrecen a la vista una apreciable homogeneidad urbanística. Luarca, que significa Txugar de Barcos en nuestro denostado idioma (aunque la denominan Txuarca los castizos), tuvo su origen en estos barrios, que junto con la Carril cierran la primera ciudad, posteriormente crecida con la Ley Cambó y sus edificios modernistas, eclécticos, etc.
El resto del concejo son poblaciones diseminadas en una extensión de 337 kilómetros cuadrados, en los que cabe destacar la naturaleza —Paisaje Protegido de Entrecabos de la Cuenca del Esva, Monumento Natural de las Hoces del Esva y Reserva Natural de la Playa de Barayo—, el tipismo de los arcos del pueblo de Brieves, Cadavedo, Trevías, lugar milenario y segunda población valdesana. Las parroquias de Paredes, Ayones y Arcallana merecen una visita sin prisas para poder observar los corzos, las nutrias, etc.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

３ 原宿デザインフェスタで個展を開くまでに、毎月ひとつの作品を展示することにチャレンジ。

そもそも写真を撮る際に、カメラ側で設定を行います。
その段階ですでに加工している、と僕は考えています。
なので、フォトショップは使ってくださいね。

と、その前に、昔ながらのフィルム撮影の際だって、現像段階があります。
これが、

っていう式ですよ。

フォトショップで、光や色彩をバランスよく加工するセンスが要求されるのだから、そんな屁理屈は失笑です。

ちなみに、僕は今日の写真のようにオリジナルはできるかぎりありのままに、撮影しています。
光の量は強調したりしますけど。
光や色彩をバランスよく撮っていないと、フォトショップの編集の際も加工に耐えられないと僕は感じています。
なので、きょうの写真のように、『普通』が基準になっています。
