Today, I feel like changing things a bit. I've been taking lots of portraits images of myself or love ones . Some are simple and made sense, while some makes you wonder what the hell is wrong with this guy. I noticed also that my images are becoming like one could find in Facebook, MySpace, or dare I say Friendster. Nothing against images posted there, I'm talking about the girl and friends in the bathroom images??? or the emo look, angry at the world self portrait. Before photography, I was into modding cars and make them go "Vroom Vroom". Spending countless hours making it shine, a number of "fix it" and speeding tickets. I grew out of it.
For this shot, I saw a video in YouTube. Its all about strobist shot, single light source multiple pictures and merge them all in Photoshop. Seems like a good idea.

Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu
5 Days / 4 Nights
Is a trek that takes you through diverse landscapes and altitudes as we trek around the skirts of Mount Salkantay(6271m/20,568ft) and camp within clear sight of the snow capped peak. Ascending to reach the famous Apacheta Pass at 4,600m/15,088ft) and then descent into a more tropical area passing Andenes and Chaullay on the far side of the mountain. Train ride from Hydro Electric Dam and then spend the rest of the 4th evening relaxing in the town and hotsprings of Aguas Calientes. Early 5th morning you take the bus (or walk if desired) up to Machu Picchu your well deserved prize. Late afternoon train and bus back to Cusco in the evening.
This path is well-known as the Salkantay Trek. After the Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek is the most beautiful and popular one. Indeed, the magazine National Geographic Adventure rated the Salkantay Trek as one of the best 25 treks all over the world.
Salkantay Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco - Mollepata - Soraypampa
We will leave from Cusco approximately between 4:30a.m. and 5:00a.m. A local bus will take us to the town of Mollepata (2900 meters above sea level) where we will arrive approximately at 8:15 in the morning to have breakfast. During the trip we will have panoramic views of the majestic Salkantay, other mountains covered with snow, and the Valley of Apurimac River. We will meet with our support staff, and they will load the equipment on horses and mules. Around 9:00 a.m., we will begin our walk toward Sayllapata (3200 meters above sea level). About 1:00p.m., we will have a Peruvian lunch. After lunch, we will continue hiking toward the Soraypampa villages (3850 meters above sea level). Around 5:30 in the afternoon we will arrive to our camp where the tents will be ready for you as well as your dinner.
Day 2: Soraypampa - Salkantay Pass - Huayracpunku - Chaullay
Today, nature will change drastically from dry sceneries to snowy peaks and tropical areas. After a nutritious breakfast, we will start the most difficult part of the trek. We will start the hike around 7:00 in the morning. We will hike to a place called Pampas Salkantay, then go toward the left side of the snowy peaks of Umantay located next to the Apu Salkantay. At midday, we will be on the highest point ( 4600 meters above sea level). We will appreciate spectacular views of the mountains and the imposing snowy peaks of the Salkantay (6264 meters above sea level) which is known as the second highest point of the Cusco region. Around 1:00 p.m., we will have our lunch, in the area called Huayracmachay. After a trek of approximately 3 hours, we will arrive to our camp in Challway (2920 meters above sea level). Around 7:00p.m., we will recuperate from the trek and eat dinner.
Day 3: Chaullay - Collpapampa - La Playa - Santa Teresa
Around 7:00a.m., we will start our trek. We will walk for about 6 hours toward Playa Sahuayaco and during this period; we will observe a town called Collpabamba, also called the “Forest Cloudy Brow” where waterfalls, thermal hot springs, fruit-bearing trees, varied flora, and birds can be observed. If we are lucky, we will be able to observe the famous bird called the “Cock of the Rocks”. From Playa Sahuayaco, we will head to the campsite located at the hot springs of Santa Teresa (It is recommended to bring a bath suit.) Here you will eat dinner.
Day 4: Santa Teresa - Hidroelectryc - Aguas Calientes
After of our delicious breakfast we are going to walk for approximately around 8:30 a.m we begin our trek to the village Colpani, we follow this rising trail, from which we will see plantations of coffee, banana, passion fruit and a lovely view of the Santa Teresa Valley. We follow along the riverside of Vilcanota River until arrive to the Oroya (canopy brich) From here we have an option to hike to hidroelectrica or to catch a small car where will take us until Hidroelectrica (25 minutes), from this place we can observe the back of Machupicchu Sanctuary, where we have the last lunch with all staff. from here we will continuo walking until arrive to Aguas Calientes around 4:30 p.m then we will stay in a hostal the last night.
Day 5: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu Sanctuary - Aguas Calientes - Ollantaytambo - Cusco
Today, you will be able to choose between waking up at 4:30a.m. and walking up to Machu Picchu or taking a bus to Machu Picchu at 7:00a.m. In Machu Picchu, you will have a guided tour for about two hours and after that you will be free to explore the Citadel and take pictures, or if you desire, ascent toward the Huaynapicchu Mountain. At 2:26p.m. or 6:03p.m. (depending on availability), you will be taking a train to Ollantaytambo and from there; a bus will drive you to your hotel in Cusco.

Wednesday 25 July 2012: Les Contamines-Montjoie - Auberge Le Truc (1,720 m) - Refuge de Miage (1,560 m) - Col de Tricot (2,120 m) - Bellevue (1,800 m) - Col de Voza (1,653 m) - Les Houches - Les Bossons
Day 12 of our Tour du Mont Blanc, on Exodus' Mont Blanc Circuit trip - a clockwise circumambulation of the Mont Blanc massif
Today would bring us back into the valley of Chamonix-Mont Blanc, and it felt far too soon to be returning to Les Bossons. Suddenly the end was nigh....
After our final tent wrangling, and Stephen and Ian demonstrating their double act tent-taking-down skills for the rest of us, we said au revoir lovely Camping Le Pontet and walked down to Les Contamines, turning off at the signpost for Le Truc. A steep climb up through pine trees eventually brought us out above the tree line at Auberge Le Truc (1,720 m). The morning's blue skies and bright sun made for poor photos of the Glacier du Miage and the peaks above, including the elusive Mont Blanc and the Aiguille de Bionnassay.
A descent into the next valley brought us to the Refuge de Miage (1,560 m) in its stunning location below the glacier and the Dômes de Miage (but the sun was still working against my photos!). Refreshed by coffee and cake (I declined the blueberry tarte at 7€ a slice...), we commenced the long haul and many zigs and zags up to the Col de Tricot (2,120 m). En route, it did indeed feel frustrating to have lost the 200m between Auberge Le Truc and Refuge de Miage! Still, the views from the col were smashing - north into the Bionnassay valley with the line of the Mont Blanc Tramway just discernable, and south back over the Miage valley and to the ridges beyond. A great spot to rest for a while.
The next stretch took us down into the Bionnassay valley and more great views of the peaks and glaciers of the Mont Blanc Massif up to our right, and we lunched with a stupendous view looking up the Glaicer de Bionnassay at the Aiguille de Bionnassay and Dôme du Goûter.
Accompanied by Alpine Roses, flowers and woodland we descended towards the Torrent de Bionnassay, and crossed, carefully, over the cable suspension bridge. A very busy section followed, up to Bellevue where the tramway and the cable car from Les Houches deposit strollers, hikers and mountaineers alike. Those with tired legs opted for the cable car down, the rest of us continued to the Col de Voza (1,653 m) and then took the black run down to Les Houches - the sandy/scree track made for tough going on the knees.
Having made a rainy rendezvous at a bar in Les Houches, we squeezed onto the bus back to Les Bossons - hello again Camping Les Marmottes .... and BONJOUR MONT BLANC! Yes, at last.... we realised what we'd missed on our arrival... the amazing views of the Glacier des Bossons, Mont Blanc and the Aiguille du Midi - and many more peaks and ridges besides. The colours turned from blue to white to rose pink as the sun set. Beautiful.

Mark Stephen Gerstein
AUGUST 20, 1961 – FEBRUARY 27, 2021
Mark Stephen Gerstein, 59, gained his angel wings February 27, 2021 due to natural causes at his home. A celebration of his life will be planned at a later date. Mark was born August 20, 1961 in Boone, IA to Bernard and Clarice Gerstein. He graduated from Ames High in the class of 1980. Mark was a lover of music and the environment. Anyone who knew him knew he was passionate about reading and he was likely to share his favorite books with them. He prided himself on connecting people. Mark was a great outdoorsman and hunter. In all his life, he never met a stranger, every person he met was a friend in the making. In the last few years, Mark was extremely passionate about and was actively engaged in Marianne Williamson's 2020 presidential campaign. Mark is survived by his three girls who were his whole world, Kylie (Miguel Piña), Alivia (Justin Boot) and Natalie Gerstein and their mother Michelle Hill (Brian Hill); father, Bernard; brother, William (Rhoda); sister, Beth (Greg) Timm; brother, Garth (Angela); sister-in-law, Barb Anderson; nieces and nephews, Aliza and Neil Gerstein, Alex (Nicole Zelickson) and Sedona Timm. He was preceded in death by his mother, Clarice, and his brother, Greg. Memorial contributions may be directed to Food at First in Ames. Mark volunteered there and would have loved knowing that he continued to give even after he passed.

Graduada de Bachiller en Letras del Colegio del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, tiene un Doctorado en Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de La Habana, Cuba y un Master of Sciences in Human Services, Summa Cum Laude de Nova University en Estados Unidos, y un Certificado de Maestra para Junior College del Dpto. de Educación de la Florida (1974-1984). Trabajó por 30 años en el Dpto. de Salud y Servicios de Rehabilitación, en los últimos 15 años como Directora de la División de Staff Development and Training de los condados de Dade y Monroe. En 1979 fue seleccionada por un tribunal de administradores del Dpto. para dirigir el programa estatal de tres años “Management Fellows” diseñado para preparar líderes. En 1990 fue la primera administradora aprobada por el Fla. Board of Nursing, con una maestría distinta a la de las enfermeras, para otorgar créditos educacionales (ceu’s) a ellas a través de los programas que diseñara su División. En 1993 fue la primera ejecutiva del sector público en obtener el premio “Davis Productivity Award” diseñado para el sector privado “por sus contribuciones a mejorar la labor y productividad de los empleados del Dpto. de Salud Pública.” Durante su carrera recibió 35 certificados y 8 placas en reconocimiento por sus contribuciones, de Tallahassee la última en 1998, al retirarse, “por haber sostenido un extraordinario liderazgo creativo durante toda su carrera en el departamento.” Matilde ha sido conferencista en distintos tópicos educacionales, culturales, de administración y de servicio social en las universidades FIU, St. Thomas, UM, Miami Dade College y en diversos centros de servicios comunitarios. Del 2008 al 2010 fue la asistente del Sr. Manuel Muñiz, Presidente del Instituto Cultural Hispanoamericano de la Universidad de Miami en el Koubek Center donde dictó también seis conferencias. En Junio del 2012 publicó su primer libro titulado “Perfumes del Mar y mis Recuerdos”, en Abril del 2013, su segundo libro “Encuéntrate conmigo en las Estrellas”, y en Septiembre del 2014, el tercero titulado “El Cofre de mis Recuerdos”, todos presentados en la Casa Bacardi del Instituto de Estudios Cubanos y Cubano-Americanos (ICAAS) de la Universidad de Miami.

circles representing "The Cosmic Dancer", an ancient image of the
divine dating back to prehistoric times in India. The drawing was
completed in three days.

Nataraja, "The Cosmic Dancer" is an ancient image of the divine dating back to prehistoric times in India. The earliest figurines are cast in stone and found amidst the ruins of the Indus Valley civilization (circa 4000-2800 C.E.) Later representations are cast in either bronze or iron and to be found in southern india from the time of the Chola Dynasty (800-1100 A.D.) The most famous of these is installed in the Siva temple at Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu where for centuries it has inspired the imagination and fervent devotion of pilgrims from all over India.
The image is deceptively simple at first glance. It reveals a sure-footed dancer-figure firmly holding down a crouched demon while the other is half-raised in a balancing pose. Four arms reach out expressively - the one on the left holds up a lighted torch from which issue burning flames that form a majestic aureole or a halo of fire around the figure, at once illuminating and encircling it. The right arm holds up a drum, the flying tassels of which indicate a rhythmic song in progress. The lower left hand is held up with palm out in a symbolic gesture, or "mudra", indicating and exhorting fearlessness. The lower right hand reaches gracefully across a lithe torso pointing down towards the delicate foot that is raised in movement. Here rest and salvation are assured to those seeking sincerely. The figure is androgynous with a dangling earring on the left side. Seen in the mystic imagination of poets from long ago, The Nataraja is a profound vision of the Absolute. This god is by no means aloof or hidden apart from creation in some transfixed realm. The Cosmic Dancer has an unstinting capacity to endure his own death and to leap forth into an unknown place where He will be emptied of every familar position or posession, claim or identity - indeed, of life itself. Through such a complete reversal and sacrafice, then, the Dancer attains a new life in an open ground that is now illuminated by the fires of self-knowledge and a triumphant self-awareness. This is the prize, the deepest mystery of His joy. The Nataraja is in complete union- is unity itself as living truth of action.
The sense of unity is expressed through a fine sensitivity to balance by the Cosmic Dancer. Rising above fear and ignorance, this deity knows that movement is an expansion from the limited into the unlimited, of matter into spirit, because He understands balance. Opposites abide in Him rather than exsisiting without: death and creation, lightness and dark, joy and pain, are but complementary poles to be conjoined through harmony and poise. The central axis of the Dancer's body is like a spinal column that knows an exquisite connection to all space and holds it together. Then the entire panorama of the world becomes a play or "lila"- a game, a dance, a spontaneous outflow of energy. The sacred is everywhere and in every step.

Durante mi PhD busco desarrollar un estudio antropológico sobre la creación y negociación de diferentes formas de conocimiento alrededor del dengue.

Traditionally home to the Ghungalu people the Blackdown Tableland rises abruptly above the surrounding dry plains not far from the massive Blackwater International Coal operations at Blackwater.
Located at an altitude of over 900 metres (3,000 feet), and almost on the Tropic of Capricorn in Queenslands Dry Tropics, Blackdown Tableland is home to one of the most species rich and diverse plant communities in Australia.
The Tableland, and Blackdown National Park is reached by leaving the Capricorn Highway just to the east of Dingo (183km west of Rockhampton in Central Queensland) and driving up the steep range to the top where commanding views of the surrounding plains can be had.These days the road to the top is sealed but care needs to be exercised particularly when nearing the top.
Blackdown Tableland National Park supports a diverse range of isolated plant communities including heathlands, dry eucalypt forests and moist pockets of Livistona palms, ferns, mosses and orchids while at the same time protecting spectacular sandstone scenery characterised by escarpments, gorges and waterfalls and a host of rare and interesting species only found in this locality.
After driving the winding narrow road up to the Blackdown Tableland we rounded a bend and were pleasantly surprised, when almost at the top, to find a very small and isolated colony of flowering Livistona fulva (July) thriving in under the protection of the sandstone cliffs near the very top of the Blackdown Tableland.

LIVISTONA FULVA
"There are many unique plants growing on these tablelands, and from a palm perspective, they are the home of Livistona fulva, also known as Livistona sp. "Blackdown". This palm is one of the more attractive members of the genus, with stiff leaves which have a bronze waxy surface under the leaf. On the tablelands they grow to approximately 60ft tall(18-20 metres), the trunk smooth and approximately 10-12 inches thick."(25-30cm)
This palm is tolerant of a wide range of conditions, from high heat and humidity down to below freezing temperatures. Given suitable water and fertiliser, it grows at a reasonable rate."

I have established that the species, once known as Livistona sp.'Blackdown Tableland' was named by Flickr contributor and very helpful plant ID expert - Tony Rodd who visited the Blackdown Tableland just after the road was carved up to the top in 1970.

The day started off cold, but I knew it wouldn't last. According to one weather station, it was 46 degrees at the start, 59 degrees at 8 AM, 70 degrees by 9, 77 at 10 and 81 degrees at 11 AM. That was actually cooler than last year! Knowing it would be hot, my strategy was to go out easy and cool as efficiently as possible. At the first checkpoint near mile 6, I was the 222nd marathoner out of 346 entrants, averaging about 9:20/mile. I kept moving steadily along, and Derrick spotted me just before mile 12. This is where Derrick helped me pull off my greatest marathon trick ever. He had soaked a towel in a pail of ice water. I took that towel & draped it over my head-- it was very effective, and kept me cool for 5+ minutes. Soon thereafter, the half-marathon course diverged and the runners thinned considerably. From this point on, I counted a total of two runners who passed me. I clocked the first half in just under 2:04.
The next checkpoint was near mile 15, and I had moved up 19 spots to 203th. I had slowed a bit, but apparently not as much as others! Around here, I was starting to suffer. My legs were hurting, possibly due to dehydration. The tough thing was I was drinking plenty, but I think most of it sat in my stomach since I was sweating so much my body couldn't replace the fluids fast enough. Regardless, I kept on chugging and now I started to pass more people. I was the 179th person across the 3rd checkpoint near mile 21. Now, all I could think of was seeing Derrick, Emily & Brandon near mile 25 with my ice towel, photo opp & personal cheering section. My knee started to hurt, but I just ran through it (it's fine now). At the last checkpoint before the finish near mile 23, I had passed 13 more people to reach 166th.
At mile 25, I got my ice towel, and that made all the pain go away. I really kicked it up a notch now, passing 20 people in the last 3 miles, including 2 who I raced by in the last 100 yards. My final time was a quite good 4:11:43. All told, I passed 79 people after mile 6 while getting passed by 3. That means I passed almost 25% of the field! If you don't believe me, check out the results. So, despite the slower than hoped (but faster than expected) time, I really felt like I ran my best time considering the race conditions and my shape.

Manchin and Sinema are on a collision course over closing a tax loophole for rich Americans. It could upend Biden's $790 billion deal.

■ It's possible Democrats will wait days, if not weeks, before Sinema breaks her silence.
Senate Democrats are relearning an old Argentine dance lesson: It takes two to tango.
Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia stunned many by striking an agreement for a $790 billion climate, healthcare, and tax package. The legislation is much bigger than most Democrats thought possible only two weeks ago when Manchin appeared to take climate programs and tax hikes off the table, citing growing fears about fueling inflation.
But the most carefully negotiated deals can still be upended in an environment where no margin of error exists. Manchin is on a collision course with Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona over a small part of the bill. The pair disagree on carried interest, a loophole in the tax code that mostly benefits wealthy investors and hedge fund managers.
Eliminating carried interest is a goal that's eluded both Republican and Democratic administrations for a decade. It's the percentage of profits that hedge-fund managers receive from lucrative investments. But that compensation is taxed at a lower capital gains rate that tops out at 23.8% and doesn't face a higher income tax rate like most Americans pay on their wages. Critics argue it amounts to a huge gap in the tax code.
Sinema was cut out of private negotiations between Manchin and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. It reportedly prompted her to ask fellow senators "What's going on?" when news broke of the deal on the Senate floor.
"It's the latest perplexing move by Senate leadership and doesn't seem like a strategy designed to maximize chances of success," John LaBombard, an ex-aide to Sinema, told Insider. He said the Arizona Democrat has long held "particular interest" on the tax proposals in the mix. "It strikes me as a very strange strategy to let the rest of the caucus learn about the agreement from a press release."
For his part, Manchin has expressed strong support for the measure and doesn't seem inclined to drop it. Last year, he joined two Senate Democrats in sponsoring a bill eliminating carried interest. "The only thing I was adamant about was the carried interest," he told reporters on Thursday.
Sinema is known to harbor objections to narrowing carried interest, per a Democratic aide familiar. But Democrats are hoping it's not thrown out since it represents the only tax increase on rich individuals within the bill. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts said Democrats are doing "exactly the right thing" by including it.
Others caution the party is in for a bumpy ride. But the finish line is in sight after a year of tense negotiations that still rest on Manchin and Sinema. "Until you get it done, there's twists and turns," Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia told Insider. "Senator Sinema is going to do her own due diligence, which she does."
Sinema's office said in a statement that she is still reviewing the 725-page legislation and awaiting rulings from the Senate parliamentarian, who governs what qualifies under reconciliation, the legislative maneuver Democrats are using to avoid a Republican filibuster and pass the bill along party lines in the evenly split Senate. It's possible Democrats will wait days, if not weeks before Sinema breaks her silence on the package.
Schumer declined to comment on Thursday whether he'd kept Sinema in the loop. "Members are reviewing the text, and we'll all be talking shortly," he said at a press conference. He aims to put the bill on the floor sometime next week.
A tax loophole that Democrats and Republicans alike can't seem to close
Both Presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama sought to scrap carried interest but failed to do so. What's on the table now doesn't get rid of it either; the changes that Democrats are pursuing only make it harder for rich investors to get the preferential tax rate on swaths of their income.
"This doesn't completely close the loophole," Kimberly Clausing, a former Treasury Department tax official for the Biden administration, told Insider. "It only partially does by lengthening the amount of time that you have to hold the investment for it to qualify as a capital gain."
Closing the carried interest loophole would only affect a slice of the financial sector. But it's a tax that hits a powerful group of rich Americans who have managed to escape tax increases so far under the Biden administration.
The American Investment Council, a lobbying group that represents private equity firms like Blackstone, immediately pummeled the carried interest initiative as a burden on small businesses benefiting from their investments.
"This is like a small universe of a few hedge funds that maybe hold long-term investments, a lot of private equity or venture capital firms," Ben Koltun, the research director at Beacon Policy Advisors, said in an interview. "It's a very select few people, but also a very powerful few people as well."
It is possible to revamp the proposal so it secures the support of Sinema without losing Manchin's thumbs up.
"There are ways of adjusting it," David Kamin, the former deputy director of the White House National Economic Council under Biden, told Insider. "But this is one that already represents a compromise even as it raises $14 billion from changing the treatment of a small group of people who are able to convert their their labor income to capital gains."
"If this just dropped out, the amount of money would not sink these other really important things that the bill is doing," Clausing said.
However, Sinema has wielded enormous influence over the process. That isn't likely to change.
"I certainly hope that by this point, it's abundantly clear to Senator Schumer and other party leaders that political pressure does not work on Senator Sinema," LaBombard, now a senior vice president at public affairs firm ROKK Solutions, said. "After a year of repeatedly trying and failing to pressure her into taking positions contrary to her long-held views, this should not surprise anyone."
Investors and money managers hoping to knock carried interest out of the bill may have an ally in Sinema. Individuals and organizations in the securities and investment industry donated $2.2 million to the Arizona Democrat since 2017, per data from nonpartisan campaign finance tracker OpenSecrets.
"You know, one will say 'I object to this' and the other one will say, 'I object to that' and we can't have this or that,'" Steve Rosenthal, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center, told Insider. "It's almost like performance theater at this moment."

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on Sunday said the reason lawmakers such as Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) were not brought into negotiations on a climate, health care and taxes deal that he struck with Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) was that he feared it wouldn’t come to “fruition.”
The deal would require the support of all 50 Senate Democrats, placing Sinema, who was not involved in the behind-the-scenes negotiations, in close scrutiny until she announces a position.
“The reason people weren’t brought into this, I didn’t think it would come to fruition,” Manchin told CNN “State of the Union” co-anchor Jake Tapper. “I didn’t want to disappoint people.”
The bill is a slimmed-down package from the roughly $3 trillion Build Back Better deal Democrats hoped to pass before Manchin announced he couldn’t support the bill late last year after months of wrangling over a potential deal.
Manchin and Schumer had been negotiating for months on a smaller package. Their talks collapsed on July 14, but the two Democrats surprised many in Washington when they announced a deal last week.
The package would invest $369 billion in energy-focused climate programs over the next 10 years and $300 billion to reduce the deficit in addition to provisions to extend health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.
When asked by Tapper if Sinema would support the bill, Manchin highlighted what he said were her contributions to the potential text.
He said Sinema was “very instrumental” in allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices and the two moderate senators were in agreement to not raise taxes on Americans.
“She has so much in this piece of legislation,” Manchin said. “She’s formed quite a bit of it and worked on it very hard.”
Manchin added that he and Sinema “speak a lot” but declined to say the last time they met.
“Hopefully, she will be positive about it,” he said. “But she’ll make her decision. I respect that.”
Manchin said he hopes that the Senate will pass the bill this week before they leave for the upcoming August recess.

The bike has taken Debra and me around Europe and the UK, and changed our lives. It introduced us to new friends and took us to obscure places we'd otherwise never have seen. Sadly, since starting a family, I've not ridden the Pragahari as much as I would have liked...and this year has been particularly bad due to the incessant rain across Britain. Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu
5 Days / 4 Nights
Is a trek that takes you through diverse landscapes and altitudes as we trek around the skirts of Mount Salkantay(6271m/20,568ft) and camp within clear sight of the snow capped peak. Ascending to reach the famous Apacheta Pass at 4,600m/15,088ft) and then descent into a more tropical area passing Andenes and Chaullay on the far side of the mountain. Train ride from Hydro Electric Dam and then spend the rest of the 4th evening relaxing in the town and hotsprings of Aguas Calientes. Early 5th morning you take the bus (or walk if desired) up to Machu Picchu your well deserved prize. Late afternoon train and bus back to Cusco in the evening.
This path is well-known as the Salkantay Trek. After the Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek is the most beautiful and popular one. Indeed, the magazine National Geographic Adventure rated the Salkantay Trek as one of the best 25 treks all over the world.
Salkantay Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco - Mollepata - Soraypampa
We will leave from Cusco approximately between 4:30a.m. and 5:00a.m. A local bus will take us to the town of Mollepata (2900 meters above sea level) where we will arrive approximately at 8:15 in the morning to have breakfast. During the trip we will have panoramic views of the majestic Salkantay, other mountains covered with snow, and the Valley of Apurimac River. We will meet with our support staff, and they will load the equipment on horses and mules. Around 9:00 a.m., we will begin our walk toward Sayllapata (3200 meters above sea level). About 1:00p.m., we will have a Peruvian lunch. After lunch, we will continue hiking toward the Soraypampa villages (3850 meters above sea level). Around 5:30 in the afternoon we will arrive to our camp where the tents will be ready for you as well as your dinner.
Day 2: Soraypampa - Salkantay Pass - Huayracpunku - Chaullay
Today, nature will change drastically from dry sceneries to snowy peaks and tropical areas. After a nutritious breakfast, we will start the most difficult part of the trek. We will start the hike around 7:00 in the morning. We will hike to a place called Pampas Salkantay, then go toward the left side of the snowy peaks of Umantay located next to the Apu Salkantay. At midday, we will be on the highest point ( 4600 meters above sea level). We will appreciate spectacular views of the mountains and the imposing snowy peaks of the Salkantay (6264 meters above sea level) which is known as the second highest point of the Cusco region. Around 1:00 p.m., we will have our lunch, in the area called Huayracmachay. After a trek of approximately 3 hours, we will arrive to our camp in Challway (2920 meters above sea level). Around 7:00p.m., we will recuperate from the trek and eat dinner.
Day 3: Chaullay - Collpapampa - La Playa - Santa Teresa
Around 7:00a.m., we will start our trek. We will walk for about 6 hours toward Playa Sahuayaco and during this period; we will observe a town called Collpabamba, also called the “Forest Cloudy Brow” where waterfalls, thermal hot springs, fruit-bearing trees, varied flora, and birds can be observed. If we are lucky, we will be able to observe the famous bird called the “Cock of the Rocks”. From Playa Sahuayaco, we will head to the campsite located at the hot springs of Santa Teresa (It is recommended to bring a bath suit.) Here you will eat dinner.
Day 4: Santa Teresa - Hidroelectryc - Aguas Calientes
After of our delicious breakfast we are going to walk for approximately around 8:30 a.m we begin our trek to the village Colpani, we follow this rising trail, from which we will see plantations of coffee, banana, passion fruit and a lovely view of the Santa Teresa Valley. We follow along the riverside of Vilcanota River until arrive to the Oroya (canopy brich) From here we have an option to hike to hidroelectrica or to catch a small car where will take us until Hidroelectrica (25 minutes), from this place we can observe the back of Machupicchu Sanctuary, where we have the last lunch with all staff. from here we will continuo walking until arrive to Aguas Calientes around 4:30 p.m then we will stay in a hostal the last night.

Today, you will be able to choose between waking up at 4:30a.m. and walking up to Machu Picchu or taking a bus to Machu Picchu at 7:00a.m. In Machu Picchu, you will have a guided tour for about two hours and after that you will be free to explore the Citadel and take pictures, or if you desire, ascent toward the Huaynapicchu Mountain. At 2:26p.m. or 6:03p.m. (depending on availability), you will be taking a train to Ollantaytambo and from there; a bus will drive you to your hotel in Cusco.

The old brick water tower which stands above Eden Park harks back to a time when such utilitarian structures were thoughtfully designed and prominent local landmarks. Now a National Historic Landmark, the 172-foot-high brick water tower in Cincinnati was built in 1894, and was in use until 1912. Actually the tower is still in use, but is now a communications facility for the city.
Designed by Samuel Hannaford & Sons in the Romanesque Revival style, the structure consists of a cylindrical water tank and an adjoining taller octagonal turret.
The original purpose of the water tower was as a pressure tank to get water into the Walnut Hills mains and hydrants. Expansion made it necessary to provide pressure tanks in other more strategic locations, and so this water tank was closed down in 1916.
Inside the tower is a spiral staircase and elevator going to the top. In those days you could take the elevator for five cents and enjoy the panoramic view of the Ohio River.
During WWI it served as a guardhouse for infantry encamped in the park. When night flying was still in its infancy, a revolving beacon was placed on top. In 1943 the city turned the tower over to the Park Board for preservation.
There was an effort to remodel the tower for use as a Police Department communications center in 1947, but it was abandoned after several workers contracted a fever caused by the pigeon droppings that had accumulated over the years.
Eden Park, owned and operated by the Cincinnati Park Board, is located in the Mt. Adams community of Cincinnati, Ohio. The park began as the designation for the city's water supply, purchased in 1859. However, early on the city saw that the area could also serve the dual purpose of city park. The park area was originally designed by noted landscape architect Adolph Strauch, who also was responsible for Spring Grove Cemetery.
