at the end of last year i went to the natural history museum to see the wildlife photographer of the year exhibition. i visited the previous year and as with then the standard was ridiculously high. in my head i tried to denigrate the superior standard of wildlife photography by telling myself that the photographers were lucky, in the right place at the right time, or use the old 'well if i was in africa...' argument. however those envious thoughts didn't hold much water when i began reading the accompanying text and it became clear how much skill, patience and effort was behind each photo. my favourite image, which was only awarded a runners up commendation, was bad boys by andrew walmsley - a shot full of power, humour and monkeys. if you're unable to make it to london to see it in person here's the online gallery. a positive side effect to seeing the exhibition was that it made me revisit some of my old photos, and i was particularly reminded of my dolphin encounter in venezuela by this dolphin shot. at the time i only posted one photo, so here's another from the same boat trip.

here's the original

Wednesday 25 July 2012: Les Contamines-Montjoie - Auberge Le Truc (1,720 m) - Refuge de Miage (1,560 m) - Col de Tricot (2,120 m) - Bellevue (1,800 m) - Col de Voza (1,653 m) - Les Houches - Les Bossons

Day 12 of our Tour du Mont Blanc, on Exodus' Mont Blanc Circuit trip - a clockwise circumambulation of the Mont Blanc massif

Today would bring us back into the valley of Chamonix-Mont Blanc, and it felt far too soon to be returning to Les Bossons. Suddenly the end was nigh....

After our final tent wrangling, and Stephen and Ian demonstrating their double act tent-taking-down skills for the rest of us, we said au revoir lovely Camping Le Pontet and walked down to Les Contamines, turning off at the signpost for Le Truc. A steep climb up through pine trees eventually brought us out above the tree line at Auberge Le Truc (1,720 m). The morning's blue skies and bright sun made for poor photos of the Glacier du Miage and the peaks above, including the elusive Mont Blanc and the Aiguille de Bionnassay.

A descent into the next valley brought us to the Refuge de Miage (1,560 m) in its stunning location below the glacier and the Dômes de Miage (but the sun was still working against my photos!). Refreshed by coffee and cake (I declined the blueberry tarte at 7€ a slice...), we commenced the long haul and many zigs and zags up to the Col de Tricot (2,120 m). En route, it did indeed feel frustrating to have lost the 200m between Auberge Le Truc and Refuge de Miage! Still, the views from the col were smashing - north into the Bionnassay valley with the line of the Mont Blanc Tramway just discernable, and south back over the Miage valley and to the ridges beyond. A great spot to rest for a while.

The next stretch took us down into the Bionnassay valley and more great views of the peaks and glaciers of the Mont Blanc Massif up to our right, and we lunched with a stupendous view looking up the Glaicer de Bionnassay at the Aiguille de Bionnassay and Dôme du Goûter.

Accompanied by Alpine Roses, flowers and woodland we descended towards the Torrent de Bionnassay, and crossed, carefully, over the cable suspension bridge. A very busy section followed, up to Bellevue where the tramway and the cable car from Les Houches deposit strollers, hikers and mountaineers alike. Those with tired legs opted for the cable car down, the rest of us continued to the Col de Voza (1,653 m) and then took the black run down to Les Houches - the sandy/scree track made for tough going on the knees.

Having made a rainy rendezvous at a bar in Les Houches, we squeezed onto the bus back to Les Bossons - hello again Camping Les Marmottes .... and BONJOUR MONT BLANC! Yes, at last.... we realised what we'd missed on our arrival... the amazing views of the Glacier des Bossons, Mont Blanc and the Aiguille du Midi - and many more peaks and ridges besides. The colours turned from blue to white to rose pink as the sun set. Beautiful.

(See links). Marvin's Shoe Service has been repairing shoes and leather goods for over 30 years. Established in 1977.

Martin's Shoe Service - Online Athens

Marvin’s Shoe Service has been in business for over 50 years. Marvin Eberhart started the shoe shop in 1977, and his son Frank started working there at age 15. Marvin passed away on December 14, 2004 and left the business to his sons Frank and Ric.

Frank now owns and operates the shoe shop along with his part-time helper, Stan Thrasher, 65, who began learning the craft of shoe repair even before Frank, 66. Marvin’s Shoe Service remains a family-owned, independent leather repair shop dedicated to craftsmanship.

There’s been a shoe repair shop in the same location since at least 1902, and probably before, said Eberhart. Leonard Hale, the man who owned the shop before it became Marvin’s, had been doing business there since 1937, much of the time partnering with his brother.

When Frank Eberhart began learning shoe repair from his father as a teenager, Athens boasted six, maybe seven, shoe repair shops, he recalled. Now there are just two: Marvin’s and Alps Shoe Service, a Baxter Street shop that’s also been in business many years.

Frank and Stan do a lot more than repair shoes at the shop. As the website says, they do professional repair of most leather goods — like installing zippers in your hard-to-get-on boots, re-stringing baseball gloves, re-covering motorcycle seats, repairing saddles and tack or restoring a ripped leather jacket (sometimes for museum displays). They also do custom dyeing and orthopedic work.

Most customers are from Athens, including many University of Georgia students after they discover the business. But Marvin’s fame has spread far and wide. Frank and Stan regularly receive mailed-in boots and shoes in need of repair from customers in Texas, Tennessee and other states.

Neither Eberhart nor Thrasher plan to retire anytime soon, they said.

Eberhart also hasn’t given any thought to what might become of the business when he does retire — an event which could affect many people, given the hundreds of thousands of shoes and other leather objects that have been in and out the business's doors.

“We’ll think about that when the time comes,” he said.

The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is the U.S. Navy’s primary strike and air superiority aircraft. It is an updated version of the F-18C/D, featuring a 20 percent larger airframe, 7,000 lb heavier empty weight, and 15,000 lb heavier maximum weight than the original Hornet. The Super Hornet carries 33 percent more internal fuel, increasing mission range by 41 percent and endurance by 50 percent over the earlier Hornet.

The F/A-18 E/F acquisition program was an unparalleled success. The aircraft emerged from Engineering and Manufacturing Development meeting all of its performance requirements on cost, on schedule and 400 pounds under weight. All of this was verified in Operational Verification testing, the final exam, passing with flying colors receiving the highest possible endorsement.

The first operational cruise of Super Hornet, F/A-18 E, was with VFA-115 onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) on July 24, 2002, and saw initial combat action on Nov. 6, 2002, when they participated in a strike on hostile targets in the "no-fly" zone in Iraq.

Super Hornet, flew combat sorties from Abraham Lincoln during Southern Watch, demonstrating reliability and an increased range and payload capability. VFA 115 embarked aboard Lincoln expended twice the amount of bombs as other squadrons in their airwing (with 100% accuracy) and met and exceeded all readiness requirements while on deployment. The Super Hornet cost per flight hour is 40% of the F-14 Tomcat and requires 75% less labor hours per flight hour.

The forward fuselage is unchanged from the C/D Hornet, but the remainder of the aircraft shares little with earlier F/A-18C/D models. The fuselage was stretched by 34 inches to make room for fuel and future avionics upgrades and increased the wing area by 25%. However, the Super Hornet has 42% fewer structural parts than the original Hornet design. The General Electric F414 engine, developed from the Hornet's F404, has 35% additional thrust over most of the aircraft's flight envelope. The Super Hornet can return to an aircraft carrier with a larger load of unspent fuel and munitions than the original Hornet.

Other differences include approximately rectangular intakes for the engines and two extra wing hard points for payload (for a total of 11), retaining previous hardpoints on the bottom centerline, wingtips, and two conformal fuselage positions. Among the most significant aerodynamic changes are the enlarged leading edge extensions which provide improved vortex lifting characteristics in high angle of attack maneuvers, and reduce the static stability margin to enhance pitching characteristics. This results in pitch rates in excess of 40 degrees per second, and high resistance to departure from controlled flight.

The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is an attack aircraft as well as a fighter through selected use of external equipment and advanced networking capabilities to accomplish specific missions. This “force multiplier” capability gives the operational commander more flexibility in employing tactical aircraft in a rapidly changing battle scenario. In its fighter mode, it serves as escort and fleet air defense. In its attack mode, it provides force projection, interdiction, and close and deep air support.

innisfreegarden.org/garden.html

We arrived at Innisfree as soon as it opened at 10AM one mid-August morning when the entire Northeastern US was in the middle of a record heatwave. Despite the heat and humidity, we were able to make a quick 1.5 mile circle on the path around the deep glacial lake at the heart of this 150 acre garden before we wilted and had to return to our air conditioned car. The harsh mid-day light made photography challenging, as you can see. We learned that Innisfree, said by some to be one of the world's Ten Great Gardens, opens at sunrise on three occasions each year, and we are already planning another trip to the Hudson River Valley in the future when we hope we can see and photograph this amazing place under better conditions.

"Like the pyramids of Egypt or the Great Wall of China, Innisfree helps us to define what we mean by ‘civilization’. It’s one of the few places in this world that lived up to — nay, exceeded — my expectations."

David Wheeler, Editor, Hortus (2013)

"In the late 1920s, Walter Beck and his wife, avid gardener and heiress Marion Burt Beck, began work on Innisfree, their country residence in Millbrook, New York. Walter Beck’s fascination with Asian art influenced his painting, the collecting he and his wife pursued, and their ideas on garden design. In the 1930s, Beck discovered the work of 8th-century Chinese poet, painter and garden maker Wang Wei. Studying scroll paintings of his famed garden, the Wangchuan Villa, Beck observed that Wang created carefully defined, inwardly focused gardens and garden vignettes within a larger, naturalistic landscape. Wang’s place-making technique — christened “cup gardens,” by Beck — influenced centuries of Chinese and Japanese garden design. It is also the principal design motif in the Innisfree landscape. Like his Chinese predecessor, Beck created three-dimensional pictures in the garden, incorporating both rocks from the site and horticultural advice from his wife. Unlike Wang Wei, or perhaps more familiar figures like Lawrence Johnston, who used his cup-like rooms at Hidcote in England to draw one through a sequence of events and create an overall sense of place, Beck focused more on individual compositions. Relating these to each other and to the landscape as a whole was the genius of Lester Collins."

The genius of this place lies not so much in the ideas which the designers formulated for the cup gardens, many of which are disarmingly simple, but in the way they have been maintained over the years. Essentially, everything is allowed to settle into the prevailing spirit of the place; if it does not, it is removed. It is this sensitivity, care and attention to the qualities of landscape, natural and made, that make Innisfree such a memorable success.

Tim Richardson, Great Gardens of America (2000)

Western gardens are usually designed to embrace a view of the whole. Little is hidden. The garden, like a stage set, is there in its entirety, its overall design revealed in a glance. The traditional Chinese garden is usually designed so that a view of the whole is impossible. [It] requires a stroll over serpentine, seemingly aimless arteries. The observer walks into a series of episodes, like Alice through the looking glass."

HY EISMAN

Horace and Dotty Dripple 32

Hy Eisman (b. March 27, 1927) is an American cartoonist who wrote and drew the Sunday strips The Katzenjammer Kids and Popeye. Eisman was the first to introduce the character of Bluto to the Popeye Sunday page. Bluto has continued to appear as the twin brother of Brutus.

He entered the comic strip field in 1950 and worked on several strips, including Kerry Drake, Little Iodine and Bunny. In comic books he was the last artist doing Little Lulu before it was cancelled in 1984. He took over The Katzenjammer Kids in 1986 and the Popeye Sunday strip in 1994. An extensive interview with Eisman on his career appeared in Hogan's Alley #15 (2007).

In 1976, Eisman, who lives in Glen Rock, New Jersey, became a teacher at the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art.

Eisman won the 1975 National Cartoonists Society's Award for Best Humor Comic Book Cartoonist (for Gold Key's Nancy comic books). In 1984, he received an Award for his work on the Little Lulu comic book.

Hy Eisman started as a greeting card artist and quickly went to creating his own newspaper cartoon feature 'It Happened in New Jersey'. In the late 1950s he became an assistant to comic artists like Alfred Andriola ('Kerry Drake') and Vernon Greene ('Bringing up Father'). At the same time, he drew for comic books by Charlton (romance), ACG ('Adventures into the Unknown', 'Forbidden Worlds'), Marvel (romance), Harvey ('Blondie') and Western Publishing ('Nancy', 'Twilight Zone', 'Smokey Stover'). From 1967 to 1983 he illustrated the 'Little Iodine' series, which was originally created by Jimmy Hatlo. In 1986 he took over 'The Katzenjammer Kids', the world's oldest continuing comic strip. In 1994, Eisman added another comic legend to his repertoire when he started drawing the Sunday 'Popeye' strip.

We have done some reorganization around the house: we added a few bookshelves upstairs and emptied the lowest ones in the living room.

Then we collected all the toys we could find, were stunned at how much we actually have, and packed them all in boxes.

Now Karel and Madelief have a box of bricks, a box of teddy bears and a plastic seesaw in their bedroom, and downstairs in the living room they have two pushcarts, a spiral thingy, a box of legos, a box of teddy bears and one out of eight numbered boxes with all sorts of toys (to be replaced at regular intervals).

With less toys, they get to play more. And the empty bookshelves don't necessarily hold toy boxes, they're also a good place to store little children.

Kleine meisjes?

democracystreet.blogspot.com/2009/02/driftwood-serves-for...

Driftwood serves for firewood, joinery, or interestingly shaped mementos. Unused by men it decays, having been cast on beaches since life began, but in my tiny lifetime humans have so fouled their groundwater that they can no longer trust their springs and wells, and many hesitate to drink from official reservoirs. Shrewdly marketed anxiety about health has created a global market for bottled water whose castaway containers get trapped among the rushes of lakes and ponds, clutter the banks of a thousand rivers, bobbing turgidly in shiny clusters against the walls of ditches and waterways, floating seaward to drift with the great ocean currents, accumulating advertisements for men along the shores of the world.

Sea and wind drift this problem across borders strewing plastic along the Corfu shore. Corfu contributes but is also the recipient of this unsightly harvest. We buy bottled water now and then and we dispose of the bottles with care or use them for other liquids, but we shouldn’t buy this stuff in the first place. There are better ways for the rich world to behave. In Ano Korakiana the water comes sparkling from the tap, but on this island gifted with copious rainfall, no shop, as elsewhere, is without its stack of plastic bottled water. Clean water from taps should be proudly advertised on menus and publicised by its suppliers. People are careless, but manufacturers should pay for research into biodegrading and clean ups. No doubt they do and much difference it seems to make. Yet while men bomb and children starve, I hesitate to rage against this blight, and if Ed Balls' conjecture this weekend (7/02/09) that we face a depression worse than the 1930s, global in its reach, changing the political landscape for ever, events might bring us to stop fouling our nest, bring us towards a more ascetic future.

On Isola Bella in Lake Maggiore.

This was after we had left the palace and gardens, and before we got a boat back to Stresa.

View of the Borromeo Palace from the west side of the island. Is a small square / piazza here.

Isola Bella (Lago Maggiore)

Isola Bella (lit. 'beautiful island') is one of the Borromean Islands of Lago Maggiore in north Italy. The island is situated in the Borromean Gulf 400 metres from the lakeside town of Stresa. Isola Bella is 320 metres long by 400 metres wide and is divided between the Palace, its Italianate garden, and a small fishing village.

Until 1632 the island—known only as l’isola inferiore or isola di sotto—was a rocky crag occupied by a tiny fishing village: but that year Carlo III of the influential House of Borromeo began the construction of a palazzo dedicated to his wife, Isabella D'Adda, from whom the island takes its name. He entrusted the works to the Milanese Angelo Crivelli, who was also to be responsible for the planning the gardens. The works were interrupted around middle of the century when the Duchy of Milan was struck by a devastating outbreak of the plague.

Construction resumed when the island passed to Carlo’s sons, Cardinal Giberto III (1615–1672) and Vitaliano VI (1620–1690); the latter in particular, with the financial backing of his elder brother, entrusted the completion of the works to the Milanese architect Carlo Fontana and turned the villa into a place of sumptuous parties and theatrical events for the nobility of Europe.

The completion of the gardens, however, was left to his nephew Carlo IV (1657–1734). They were inaugurated in 1671.

The island achieved its highest level of social success during the period of Giberto V Borromeo (1751–1837) when guests included Edward Gibbon, Napoleon and his wife Joséphine de Beauharnais, and Caroline of Brunswick, the Princess of Wales. It is said that Caroline, having fallen in love with the place, did her best to convince the Borromeo family to sell her Isola Madre or the Castelli di Cannero islands; her request being turned down, she established herself on the banks of Lake Como at Cernobbio in the Villa d’Este.

Beautiful.

This roll drop curtain was painted 1930-35 by Granite State Studios in Plymouth NH. We have no record of where it hung, but it was a backdrop on a stage the size of Contois Auditorium. We know this because the height of the curtain is exactly right for Contois. The width is narrower because the curtain has been cut/torn on the sides. It is now 15ft wide, instead of the approximately 20ft it should be.

The scene shows an imaginary street, which is how all the advertising street scenes were constructed. There is, for instance, no statue of Joan of Arc at the foot of Church Street! Many of the businesses are gone; others changed their name but are still around. For instance, Burlington Mattress became Vermont Mattress. Burlington Paint & Wallpaper became Vermont Paint & Wallpaper. Lippa’s is obviously still there. The blimp has Shepard & Hamell, which many people will remember. A few businesses are from St. Albans and even Newport – this happened when travelling salesman would promise stores a spot on a second curtain other than their own, or because some of the slots might not have found Burlington buyers. We’ll never know. (by Chris Hadsel, www.curtainswithoutborders.org/index.html)

is a municipality of Portugal, in the Setúbal District, lying at the foothills of the Serra da Arrábida, a mountain range between Setúbal and Sesimbra.

Due to its particular position at the Setúbal Bay, near the mouth of the Sado River and its natural harbour, it’s an important fishing town, with a total area of 195.0 km2 (75 sq mi) and a total population of 37,567 inhabitants.

General information

Besides professional fishing and sport fishing (mainly of swordfish), the most significant revenues in Sesimbra come from tourism. The town is famous for its beaches, fish restaurants and nightlife.

The original name of Celtic origin was Cempsibriga, meaning the Burg (Briga) of the Celtic tribe the Sesim.

Close by, on a mountaintop, 240 m (787.40 ft) above sea level, lies strategically (the ruins of) the Moorish castle. It was taken from the Moors, during the Portuguese Reconquista in the year 1165 by king Afonso Henriques with the help of Frank Crusaders. The battlements afford a beautiful panorama over Sesimbra, its harbour and the surrounding countryside.

During the Age of Discoveries, Sesimbra became an important seaport. Even king Manuel I lived here for a while. In the 17th century the fort Fortaleza de Santiago was built along the beach, as part of Portugal's coastal defence. It was even used in the 18th century by Portuguese kings as a seaside retreat.

A tourist travelling to Sesimbra can appreciate its beaches, traditional fish restaurants and the Arrábida National Park.

Close to the Moorish castle is the church Nossa Senhora do Castelo. It stands on the spot where king Sancho I built a Romanesque chapel in the early 13th century, leading to the creation in 1388 of the parish of Nossa Senhora do Castelo de Sesimbra. The present church was built in 1721. When a new church was built in the village, this church passed into disuse and fell into ruins. It was restored between 1965 and 2001. The walls of the church are inlaid with beautiful azulejos. The 17th century-pulpit was made from local pink marble. The gilded triumphal arch of the 18th century-choir is decorated with Manueline motives. On the left side of the choir stands in a niche the gilded and polychromed statue of the Madonna of the Castle on a giant shell.

There is a local radio station in the municipality, Sesimbra FM.

What's Left?"

The window wall: these will be a kind of room divider, separating the bed(room) from the main living space. Keith got these out a house in Missoula from one of his contractor friends (free!), saving us about $50 or more... We've wanted to do something like this for a couple years at least. And now we actually have the means and the space. Tonight we finished sanding them all (some have multiple layers of paint, which makes a cool effect) and then we laid them out in different formations until we found one we liked. As pictured below. Forgive the horrible garage lighting. They look a lot radder in real life, trust me. So they'll be hooked together vertically with eye-hooks (or something) and wire. And suspended from the ceiling between the bed and the woodstove.

Ω Θεέ!

Oh!

No!”

Sorella Liu rispose: “Sia resa grazia a Dio!

Here is the amazing Hotel Dort Mevsim i stayed in Pamukkale. I would highly recommend Hotel Dort Mevsim for all backpackers, like me :). You can even book your hostel online from Turkey Hostels. Cheers !

The last few days have been a flurry of activity with building on the river and wet lands. But, in between I have gone to a bunch of new places and back to some of my favorite venues.

Xavier & I love to salsa. So we did a search and wham, we found >Latin Palace Dance Club. Couples were dancing in dressy attire to wonderful salsa music. Wearing a tuxedo without a shirt and me in a short cocktail dress, it so reminded Xavier & me of Miami clubs.

A stopover at Organica to catch the last hour of DJ Qee's set woke us up with a nice psy jolt! So good to hear Qee's dynamic sounds and see old friends.

A brand new club called Fear FM sent me a tp. I got to meet owner/builder Cypher Webb. Beautifully built by Cypher, he was also spinning an awesome set of hardstyle and goth rock. I had a blast there. Cypher is also recruiting DJ's so peeps, give him a shout!

It was so late on Thursday night (Fri morn?) that I just had to stop off and say hi to DJ Xavi at The Cave. Owner Tasty Hax was there, too. I run into her at every party!

Friday afternoon, I got a tp from one of the builders. I ended up at Blackhearts 80's club. I love the funkiness of this club. So simple. It feels like a rock n roll club. Halloween was coming and the Pillsbury Dough Boy showed up! LOL!

Late night, and Xavier & I headed for DJ Nebulae's set at Piranha. Xavi loves this club. He set his JMD Effects hud on and we were in psy heaven. We always have fun at Shad's club!

In between all the craziness, I hit New Berlin's Electro Smog. Gee... I can't seem to get enough of this place. Zap Hax was hosting and DJ djleftydc Denja was spinning a sweet set of tunes.

Another new place I landed upon was Le Ghetto Hype. This is a fun club of alternative and eclectic tunes. Owner DJ Frederick Neberle & partner ARNAUD Mureaux have built a wonderful place to hang.

Off to Divaz Lounge! DJ 8wall Wrigglesworth just sent me a tp! OMG, 8wall is spinning at Divaz.

I met 8wall at Dance Island last year and then over at Nutrie. He spins a very chill set of house and minimal tunes.

But, the highlight of my night was at Old Factory listening to DJ Jeangilles Anthony. This frenchman is an artist. Beautiful industrial noise layered with a hardstyle beat... then transcending into experimental music... psychedelic experimental noise. LOL! and I fell asleep there... just couldn't leave!

Late night on Friday, Xavier and I ended up at DJ Digital Francis' Le Pardis de Digital Nation. It was an after party and Digi was spinning. Xavi & Digi started a "stump me" game. I think Digital was very impressed with Xavier's musical knowledge. They bro-downed the entire night leaving me and DJ Snowkitty dumbfounded... 'cause neither of us knew any of the tunes. LOL! I think Xavier has a new favorite dj now!

I've been meaning to check out the food trucks by the Red Hook Ball Fields for the past 2 years or so. Finally got the chance this past weekend. I wish I had a bigger stomach so I could try more stuff because all I had was the mixed ceviche and spicy pork huarache. But the 2 things I tried was pretty good.

Spicy Pork Huarache So this pic doesn't highlight the best part of this dish which is the meat hiding under all that guac and salsa. I know, I could have moved it and focused on the bits hanging out on the side. But I was in too much of a hurry to dig in. Plus, my friend was hungry too. We joked about having a support group for People With Friends Who Won't Let Them Eat Until Food Porn Has Been Properly Aquired. There needs to be pics of people on the sidelines with forks in their hands drooling and anxiously waiting when it comes to food porn.

Mixto Ceviche I had my reservations about getting ceviche off a tiny food cart especially on a hot summer day (there was a heat advisory the day I went) but it was pretty good. In fact, it's better than some ceviche I've had in restaurants.

The only con about getting food at the Red Hook Ball Fields is that there's not much else nearby (unless you want to take a stroll to IKEA or walk further up for the shops on Smith and Court). My friend mentioned the last time she was here, she met some folks who made a trek all the way from Queens via subway just for the food. I don't know, food was good. Just not sure it was THAT good. But you always gotta try it once I guess.

There was one more thing we really wanted to try which was the papusa. But the line for that truck was pretty long and we were already stuffed from the other food we got. Think I will have to make another trip back just for that. Although I heard you might be able to get it at the Brooklyn Flea as well. Anybody tried the papusa? Is it worth the wait in line?

Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis), Estero Bluffs, Cayucos, CA (Jack)

www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn74118.html

Two species of skunk are found in California, the spotted skunk (Spilogale gracilis) and the striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis), which is the species most commonly found around homes.

Although originally considered members of the weasel family, recent genetic research has placed skunks into their own family Mephitidae. Both skunk species produce an oily, yellow sulfur-alcohol compound that contains sulfuric acid. This pungent liquid is stored in two separate scent glands located on each side of the anus and can be squirted accurately at targets as far as 6 to 10 feet away as a self-defense mechanism. The secretion is acrid enough to cause nausea and can produce severe burning and temporary blindness if it strikes the eyes.

Striped skunks are primarily active at dawn, dusk, and at night but can be active during the daytime, particularly in human-use areas. Spotted skunks rarely venture out during the daytime. Both skunk species consume a highly-varied diet including insects, grubs, earthworms, small rodents, snakes, lizards, frogs, mushrooms, berries and fruit, pet food, and garbage. Skunks will also opportunistically feed on bird eggs, which can result in substantial losses to ground-nesting birds when skunk densities are high. Food items found in their diet will vary seasonally depending on availability.

The average life span of skunks is around 2 to 3.5 years, although they can occasionally live up to 7 years in the wild.

Skunks often den in burrows. They will often use abandoned burrows dug by ground squirrels, foxes, or coyotes and will enlarge them if necessary. If dens are scarce, they will readily use brush piles, hollow logs, and culverts. In urban settings, they den under decks, porches, or beneath buildings. If other suitable dens are unavailable, skunks will dig their own dens. Skunks do not hibernate; but in regions with colder weather, they may congregate in communal dens during the winter.

Skunks are attracted to residential areas by the availability of food, water, and shelter. They become a nuisance when they live under porches, decks, garden tool sheds, or homes. Their scent is usually not welcome around homes, and they often spray dogs that bark and approach rapidly. They like to feed on ripening berries and fallen fruit and cause other garden problems by digging while in search of grubs and other insects. They often search for food in lawns by digging small pits or cone-shaped depressions that range from 3 to 5 inches across. Like raccoons, they may also damage lawns by rolling back sections of sod in search of insects.

Skunks have an excellent sense of smell and good hearing, but they have very poor vision. This poor vision explains why they are often hit by cars when crossing roads. A skunk may not react if a person more than 10 feet away is quiet and standing still or moving slowly.

Healthy skunks are mild-tempered animals. They are not aggressive and, given the opportunity, prefer to flee rather than fight. They usually only defend themselves when suddenly frightened, cornered, or harmed. Skunks usually provide a warning before discharging their scent by stamping their forefeet rapidly, hissing, and arching their tail over their back. Skunks prefer not to spray given the time required to replenish their spray supply. Therefore, using caution around skunks should substantially reduce the possibility of being sprayed.

Disease concerns occur when skunks take up residence in an urban or suburban setting. In California, skunks are one of the most common carriers of rabies, a viral disease transmitted by the bite of an infected animal. Skunks can also be carriers of other diseases including leptospirosis, listeriosis, canine distemper, canine hepatitis, Q-fever, and tularemia.

PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING!

09. October 2011 – 15. January 2012

Sprengel Museum HannoverSprengel Museum Hannover

IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE

LOWER SAXONY SAVINGS BANK FOUNDATION

PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING! is an exhibition of the works of 31 photographers on a floor area of over 2,000 square metres. Since HOW YOU LOOK AT IT in 2000, this exhibition is the first and only one to provide an all-embracing overview of artistic photography from the 1960s to the present day. The exhibition has been organized by the Sprengel Museum Hannover in collaboration with the Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation. Starting out from the Foundation’s collection of large groups of works by both American and European photographers, the only collection of its kind in Europe, the exhibition explores the history and perspectives of the ‘documentary style’ of photography.

PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING! constitutes yet a further step towards establishing Hanover as an important centre for artistic photography in the north of Germany.

The starting points of the exhibition are the works of Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, William Eggleston, Lee Friedlander, John Gossage, Nicholas Nixon, Martin Parr and Michael Schmidt. The artist photographers Rineke Dijkstra, Paul Graham, Thomas Struth and the photographers of the generations that followed, such as Jitka Hanzlová, Stephen Gill, Jochen Lempert, Elisabeth Neudörfl, Heidi Specker and Tobias Zielony, visualize the world with a style of photography that adheres strictly to the medium and yet is highly subjective. Max Baumann, Boris Mikhailov, Rita Ostrowskaja and Helga Paris extend the perspective with experiences of their own confrontations with different political systems, while Laura Bielau, Thomas Demand, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Wolfgang Tillmans and Jeff Wall use the documentary style of photography as a means of exemplifying the phenomena of visual perception. Many of the works are being exhibited for the very first time.

Integrated into the exhibition are three successive Project Rooms organized by three guest curators and each taking place for the duration of one month. They thematize three different methods of collecting and three different ways of using photography.

From 9.10. until 30.10.2011 the artist Thierry Geoffroy will investigate the idea behind the title of the exhibition – PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING! – and ask: Who calls whom and what, and for what purpose, and out of what interests? On 1.11.2011 Markus Schaden will be setting up a study room devoted to the photography book as a ‘storage medium’ and collector’s item. From 6.12.2011 until 15.1.2012 Wilhelm Schürmann will be exposing the obsessions that can be the driving force behind a private collection of photographs, graphics, paintings and sculptures.

In the run-up to the exhibition HOW YOU LOOK AT IT at the Sprengel Museum Hannover, which was curated by Thomas Weski and Heinz Liesbrock on the occasion of EXPO 2000, the Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation began to purchase comprehensive groups of works by selected American and European photographers. Since then, the collecting activity of the Foundation has been focused on those works of photography that may be understood to be in the tradition of the ‘documentary style’ (Walker Evans, 1903-1975) and have been exercising a strong influence on photography since the end of the 1960s. Thus it has been possible – thanks not least to the recommendations of a high-calibre advisory board – to build up a photographic collection distinguished by its concentration on groups of works. In this regard the collection is unique in Europe.

The Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation’s collection and its perspective are now to be the subject of the present exhibition, which is being mounted jointly with the Sprengel Museum Hannover and also in the context of the Museum’s own well-cultivated photography tradition, which began in 1979 and can boast exhibitions of such great exponents of photography as Karl Blossfeldt, El Lissitzky, Judith Joy Ross and Michael Schmidt, to name only a few of many, or the “SPECTRUM” International Prize for Photography of the Foundation of Lower Saxony. ‘Collecting’ manifests itself here as an open system that operates self-reflexively in the aforementioned Project Rooms and is future-oriented and discussion-friendly in the exhibition’s supplementary events.

PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING! is accompanied by a copious publication (Steidl, Göttingen). Visitors will also be offered a comprehensive information programme.

The exhibition has been curated by Inka Schube, Curator for Photography and Media Art, Sprengel Museum Hannover, and Thomas Weski, Professor of “Curatorial Cultures”, Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig.

staff member at the Max-Planck-Institut für Astrophysik in Garching, and also an Apl. Professor at the Ludwig Maximilians Universität in München. He is also the leading scientist in the project "Dark Matter and Large Scale Structure" which is part of the SFB375 in Astroparticle-Physics financed by the DFG. After his Ph D in particle physics at LMU under the supervision of Prof.s Dürr and Heisenberg, he spent 3 years as a postdoc in Japan and the US. During that time his research interest switched to astrophysics -- the structure of neutron stars ,and the physics of pulsars and X-ray sources--,and after his return to München in 1973 he joined the MPI für Astrophysik. In 1984 he spent one year as a guest professor at Zürich university. Around 1986 he started research in Cosmology ,then a new field at the MPA. He has written a text book on cosmology "The Early Universe" which will (hopefully) soon appear as a revised and updated edition. His research interests are : The cosmic large scale structure--models and data--, and still at a reduced level, the physics of accreting neutron stars.

and yes I did buy it - not sure I comprehend much - but an interesting book.
