CHUJA ISLAND FESTIVAL: AN EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE

www.jejuweekly.com/news/articleView.html?idxno=1857

As I drove to the Jeju ferry terminal at 6 am on Saturday morning, one of the best sun rises I have ever seen began to develop above me. Incredible swirls of cloud reflected the brilliant yellow and orange colors of the sky. It was an amazing scene. Unfortunately it was the last sunshine I would see that day. An hour later I was on a ferry bound for Chuja Island and the Yellow Corvina Fish Festival, menacing storm clouds hanging overhead.

Rough seas bounced the ferry (and my stomach) up and down as high winds and sheets of rain hammered the windows. It wasn't much better when I arrived at the island an hour later. Rain was still falling and the festival booths sat empty. By 12 pm I was ready to return to Jeju. But, just as I was about to give up, there was a break in the weather and the festival resumed.

Within minutes of the rain stopping, several local men and women sat down near the pier and began to make nets for the crowd of people that had quickly gathered around them. The women were particularly fascinating as they wrapped colorful string around ropes and nets with jaw-dropping speed. Net making is a popular job among the women of Chuja as they can earn between 50-70,000 won per day.

The nets are designed specifically to catch Yellow Corvina, a species of fish once plentiful all over the southern waters of Korea but now mainly limited to the area around Chuja. Each 24 meter net is tied together to form one long 16 km net. The massive net is spread out over 650 meters of water near the island and, weighted down by circular stone blocks, allowed to sink into the sea. Then the fisherman wait for the tide to come in. Over the next few hours, the fish, unable to see the thin white fibres of the net, get trapped inside as the current brings them closer to shore.

A few meters away a woman demonstrated to a throng of visitors how to properly tie several Yellow Corvina together so that the fish dry properly. Deftly moving her hands back and forth, she expertly braided a pair of ropes around a bunch of fish. A man beside her proudly held them up in the air as I took a photo, an iconic image of Chuja Island and a symbol of its economy.

Later that afternoon, as I was preparing to leave the island and as the rain began to fall again, a large pool was filled with fish and dozens of people, young and old, jumped into the water to to try to catch them with their bare hands. It was quite the sight and the blur of motion a symbol of the turbulent weather we've had in Korea this summer.

American Roads

U.S. Route 80 is an east–west United States highway, much of which was once part of the early auto trail known as the Dixie Overland Highway. As the "0" in the route number indicates, it was originally a cross-country route, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. However, the entire segment west of Dallas, Texas, has been decommissioned in favor of various Interstate highways and state highways. Currently, the highway's eastern terminus is in Tybee Island, Georgia, at the Atlantic Ocean. Its western terminus is at the border of Dallas and Mesquite, Texas, at an intersection with Interstate 30.[2]

U.S. Route 80 (US 80) was a U.S. highway in California that continued east across the country to Georgia. The western terminus was in San Diego, California, and US 80 continued east through the city on several different alignments through the years. The highway went through the Cuyamaca Mountains, encountering many switchbacks, before descending to El Centro. After passing through the sand dunes, the highway crossed the Colorado River into Yuma, Arizona.

The highway replaced a 1912 plank road across much of Imperial County. The winding two-lane road through the Cuyamaca Mountains was one of the factors that led to a four-hour journey from San Diego to El Centro. During the 1930s, the road was realigned through the mountains, but several curves remained. In the 1950s, work began on constructing what would become Interstate 8 (I-8) to replace the old highway in San Diego to bypass the cities of San Diego, La Mesa, and El Cajon. This started with the construction of the Alvarado Canyon road as well as Mission Valley Road through the San Diego area, as well as construction a replacement for the old highway across the Viejas Grade. The construction continued across the rest of the route through the next two decades. US 80 was gradually decommissioned after 1964 as I-8, through San Diego and Imperial counties, was completed. In 2006, the highway was designated by the California State Legislature as Historic U.S. Route 80.

Route description[edit]

There were multiple alignments through the downtown San Diego area. The route as of 1928 began at Broadway (US 101) and ran along 4th Avenue north to University Avenue in the Hillcrest district, then went east on University Avenue.[3] By 1933, the routing had shifted to use Park Boulevard south of University Avenue into downtown, to end at Market Street; the city council voted that July to use University Avenue west of Park Boulevard to connect to US 101, to obtain federal funding for improving that road.[4] The next year, the Point Loma highway was referred to as the western terminus of US 80 by E.E. Wallace, a district highway engineer.[5] Nevertheless, the state-produced highway maps from the next few years did not reflect the change, or this choice of the western terminus.[6][7]

In the early days of World War II, some maps showed the western terminus of US 80 at the Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma, running north on Catalina Boulevard, north then east on Cañon Street, northeast on Rosecrans Street, southeast on Lytton Street, east on Barnett Avenue, south on Pacific Highway (US 101) and finally east on Market Street, before continuing north along Park Boulevard to El Cajon Boulevard.[8] US 395 ran concurrently along the route from downtown San Diego to the intersection with Fairmount Avenue.[9] By 1942, the US 395 concurrency had been removed.[10] With the completion of the Cabrillo Freeway, between 1946 and 1948, US 80 shifted from Park Boulevard to 11th Avenue north onto the new freeway before continuing east onto El Cajon Boulevard towards La Mesa.[11][12][13] The final San Diego alignment, with signs to be placed in 1954, moved the western terminus to the intersection with US 101 where it traveled east on what was known as Camino del Rio and Alvarado Canyon Road, and then continuing on the Mission Valley road towards La Mesa.[14][15] According to Caltrans district engineer Jacob Dekema, during the 1950s, the parts of Camino Del Rio and Rosecrans Street from Lytton Street and Rosecrans Street to Pacific Highway were considered a part of US 80.[16]

A section of old US 80 (Wildwood Glen Lane) now closed to vehicular traffic west of Descanso Junction

East of San Diego, US 80 followed the path of El Cajon Boulevard through La Mesa and then onto Main Street near downtown El Cajon before heading towards the Mountain Springs grade.[17] The route was realigned from Arnold Way onto Alpine Boulevard as it passed through Alpine and the Viejas Indian Reservation, before entering the Laguna Mountains and the Cleveland National Forest on the alignment used by I-8.[18] At Laguna Junction, a cafe for travelers existed from 1916 until when the building was taken down to provide land for the interchange with I-8.[19] A section of old US 80 — with the first few miles signed as SR 79 — continues to serve as access to the communities of Descanso, Guatay and Pine Valley;[18] SR 79 intersected US 80 east of Descanso.[20] At the time, the Ellis Wayside Rest provided a rest area for travelers; later, the state recognized it as a historic site.[21] Exiting the national forest, US 80 continued in a southeasterly direction towards Live Oak Springs and Boulevard, intersecting with the eastern terminus of SR 94. US 80 then came close to the Mexican border as it curved around the Jacumba Mountains and into the hot spring town of Jacumba.[20][22] East of there, US 80 passed by the Desert View Tower.[23]

US 80 then descended rapidly into Imperial County along the In-Ko-Pah Gorge just west of Coyote Wells and Ocotillo before entering the city limits of El Centro.[20][22] East of El Centro, US 80 again continued into Holtville. US 80 cut a southeasterly trajectory, running parallel and very close to the Mexican border, and traversing the Algodones Dunes and the Colorado Desert. It finally reached Winterhaven before crossing the Colorado River into Yuma, Arizona.[22] Almost the entire length of the former US 80 within Imperial County has since been designated County Route S80.[13]

History[edit]

Construction[edit]

Route 12 was added to the state highway system in 1909 from San Diego to El Centro,[24] and Route 27 was added from El Centro to Yuma in 1915.[25] Before a highway was constructed through the Imperial San Dunes, travelers had to pass to the north in order to reach Yuma.[26] The first route through Imperial Valley was originally a plank road made of pieces of wood that were tied together.[27] The road was completed by October 1912, and portions were still visible into the 2010s. The Ocean-to-Ocean Bridge across the Colorado River was open in 1915, and a new plank road was opened that year which became state-maintained in 1917, and used a foundation of wooden rails, with the planks bound together by steel, as opposed to simple planks that were fastened to rails. However, traffic congestion and dusty conditions made travel along the plank road difficult.[26][28][29] The delay in constructing a road to San Diego caused increased development in Los Angeles and resulted in that city becoming the trade and population center of Southern California.[30]

A stagecoach road existed into the 19th century that passed through the mountains east of San Diego.[31] Construction was discussed as early as 1911, with The San Diego Union and Daily Bee saying that it "will be one of the best in the system."[32] Well before the freeway was constructed, the automobile road through the mountains east of San Diego was narrow and wound through the mountains; it was officially dedicated in 1912.[27][33] This trip was known to take up to four hours, and frequently resulted in the radiator boiling over, flat tires, or broken fan belts; recent inclement weather would result in cars becoming mired in the mud.[31] But meanwhile, Colonel Ed Fletcher declared the road a "success", and indicated his belief that a concrete road from San Diego to Yuma would soon follow, responding to criticism that a road from Los Angeles to Brawley should have been built.[34]

US 80 was designated on November 11, 1926, along with the rest of the U.S. Routes.[35] The asphalt road was constructed through the valley as the main east–west route, and was open by 1927.[26] Another road was constructed in the early 1930s, to remove curves and widen the lanes.[31] The result was a two-lane road that still had many switchbacks, with one popularly known as "Dead Man's Curve".[36] Planning for this new alignment was underway in 1932, and much of the work was to be located at the Viejas Grade, and at the segment just west of Alpine.[37] Paving continued on US 80 into 1934, just west of the sand dunes.[38]

Meanwhile, Imperial County businessmen hoped to promote the use of this road over the route from Phoenix to Los Angeles, to increase tourism.[39] Eventually, US 80 did become the most used road into Southern California from the east, but by 1947, the Highway 80 Associated was formed to increase the traffic on the road, since the war and advertising by other cities had caused it to fall again.[40] Four years later, US 80 was reported to be the most used transcontinental highway,[41] and there was a 40 percent increase in the out-of-state cars that traveled through the state inspection station at Yuma during the first three months of that year.[42] But in 1954, there were reports that traffic had decreased, because the road to Phoenix, Arizona from Lordsburg, New Mexico had improved.[43]

Early freeway development[edit]

Starting in 1932, county and state officials proposed rerouting US 80 away from what is now La Mesa Boulevard. Although the city raised concerns about the proposal, due to the shift in transportation design towards "free-access highways" where vehicles could travel up to 60 miles per hour (97 km/h), and the success of the Arroyo Seco Parkway in Los Angeles, the La Mesa Scout newspaper withdrew their objections to the construction.[44] In the meantime, parts of El Cajon Boulevard through downtown El Cajon were widened in 1935.[45] Federal funds were allocated for rerouting US 80 in 1940;[44] by then, La Mesa Boulevard had been designated as a U.S. 80 Business Route, and El Cajon Boulevard then carried the US 80 designation to San Diego.[46] But in 1947, the San Diego Highway Development Association criticized the proliferation of traffic signals and businesses on El Cajon Boulevard, during the discussion of how to resolve traffic issues on US 101 through Oceanside.[47]

World War II stalled most freeway projects in the San Diego area. Plans were developed by 1946 for a freeway through Alvarado Canyon that would connect with the Cabrillo Freeway.[44] Funding was obtained by 1949 for the 5.4 miles (8.7 km) portion between 70th Street and Lake Murray Boulevard, and Fairmout Avenue. The first portion of the Alvarado Canyon Highway, the first freeway thorough La Mesa, was opened in early 1950. Reports indicated that this decreased the time to travel from La Mesa to San Diego by a factor of two, with 7,000 trips on the route each day.[44] That same year, the San Diego city manager expressed concerns at the Highway Commission meeting about shifting US 80 away from El Cajon Boulevard to the Alvarado Canyon and Mission Valley Road route, due to the potential loss of commerce for businesses located near the current route.[48]

In 1948, the Highway 80 Chamber of Commerce president complained that funds were being prioritized for US 395 construction, instead of on US 80.[49] In September, the county supervisors approved the Mission Valley road as a limited access highway, but held off on processing the results from surveying.[50] The next month, $1 million was allocated to the realignment of the Viejas grade,[51] namely, increasing the radius of the curves from 300 feet (91 m) to 2,000 feet (610 m), as well as limiting the grade to 4 percent.[52] By 1949, the project was under way, with prisoners contributing to the labor force,[53] and was projected to include a tunnel as well as several crossings of the Sweetwater River.[54] A longer 34 miles (55 km) tunnel through the Cuyamaca Mountains was also proposed that year, which would have been the longest in the world.[55] But by 1950, work on the Viejas grade had stalled, due to the prison labor camp being shut down; efforts were then made to start work again.[56] More funds were allocated by the State Highway Commission a few months later, and the work was to be put out for bid to complete the project.[57]

Meanwhile, construction continued on the western part of the US 80 freeway. On August 27, 1951, the final link in the new freeway between Point Loma and La Mesa was dedicated.[58] The next year, planning continued for the possibility of a freeway bypass of El Cajon that would connect to the existing US 80 freeway.[59] However, many El Cajon Boulevard motel owners raised objections over the reassigning of the US 80 designation to the new freeway, as it would potentially harm business. In response, the Highway Development Association proposed designating El Cajon Boulevard as a business route.[60] But in order to obtain funding for the construction, the new route would have to be added to the state highway system by the California State Legislature, or be designated as US 80.[61] Later, a Freeway 80 Association was formed to encourage public support for the construction of the bypass of El Cajon, and the conversion of the Alvarado Canyon and Mission Valley roads into a freeway.[62] Following the city of San Diego council and county approval, the California State Assembly transportation committee heard complaints from citizens claiming that they had not been adequately notified about the plans for US 80 or SR 94, or given enough time to provide input.[63]

In Imperial County, discussion regarding rerouting US 80 south of the city of Holtville began in August 1953.[64] The next year, the state director of public works announced that the route would be rebuilt to the south for 7 miles (11 km) as a freeway.[65] In February 1954, the California Highway Commission declared that both the Alvarado Canyon and Mission Valley roads, as well as the new Holtville alignment, were to be part of US 80; an alignment was also chosen for the part of the highway that passed through El Cajon.[66] A $934,211 contract was given out to construct the Holtville portion in April.[67] Contrary to the recommendation of the California Senate Interim Committee on Highways to study constructing the freeway to replace US 80 on a new alignment, San Diego County officials decided to pursue upgrading the existing road to become a freeway. Another route through the Lyons Valley was considered as an alternative.[68] The Highway Development Association proposed adding grade-separated interchanges on the routing of US 80 through San Diego, as well as reconstructing the interchange with the Cabrillo Freeway, as well as finishing the work on the Viejas Grade and through the mountains.[69] That year, according to Caltrans, the interchange with US 395 was the busiest in the county.[70]

Interstate Highway System[edit]

In April 1955, a Caltrans official announced that US 80 would be built as a freeway for its entire length in California, as it was to be included in the Interstate Highway System.[71] In the meantime, while plans moved further along on US 101, the mayor of San Diego asked the California Highway Commission to keep the US 80 project on track.[72] However, the construction was put on hold because of lower traffic levels on US 80, compared to other local highways.[73] State Assemblyman Hegland raised the issue in the Assembly Highway subcommittee in December, stating that the construction of the freeway would help the economy and the Port of San Diego.[74] State Senator Collier went even further and blamed the delay on San Diego County officials, in addition to linking the delay to damaging the program to develop the port.[75] The bridge over the Colorado River was replaced in 1956, at a cost of $1.2 million, and was in use until 1978, when the I-8 bridge was built.[76]

Finally, in May 1957, bids opened for the part of US 80 between Grossmont Boulevard in La Mesa and Chase Avenue in El Cajon, that would connect to the new SR 67 freeway.[77] Groundbreaking took place on June 10, and the project was to cost $3.6 million.[78] The rebuilding of the Cabrillo Freeway interchange became a priority due to the availability of federal funding, and due to the traffic problems encountered with having ramps entering from both the left and the right.[79] In July, the Highway Development Association decided to formally raise the issue of the incomplete highway survey through Imperial County at the next California Highway Commission meeting.[80] In 1958, federal funds were allocated to construct US 80 from Taylor Street to Fairmount Avenue as an eight-lane freeway, and from there to 70th Street as a divided highway.[81] In August, the state announced that there were four proposed routes for US 80 through the mountains, including one with a tunnel.[82] A contract was later awarded to construct the freeway from Taylor Street to the Cabrillo Freeway at a cost of $1.2 million.[83] In November, Caltrans announced that the Walker Canyon route had been chosen for US 80, which would allow for the route to be constructed in stages, as well as being the least expensive alternative.[84]

By the end of the year, plans were being made for construction of the freeway between Flume Drive east of El Cajon and Laguna Junction,[85] and the portion of the freeway from Fairmount Avenue to Lake Murray Boulevard was contracted for $2.6 million.[86] In January 1960, the Taylor Street to Cabrillo Freeway portions were under construction, including the interchange at the latter, and were scheduled to be complete by October, while the Cabrillo Freeway to Fairmout Avenue portion was up for bid;[87] the next month, the contract was awarded for $4.6 million, with interchanges to be constructed at Texas Street and Ward Road to replace traffic signals.[88] In July, the new I-8 designation for the road was announced, and plans to post signs were made.[89] Another contract for the portion from Grossmont Summit near Chase Avenue to Ballantyne Avenue was awarded for $2.7 million in November.[90]

But in 1960, Jacob Dekema, the district highway engineer, stated that due to lower traffic on US 80, the completion of the freeway through the mountains would be delayed until at least 1971.[91] Construction of the section of US 80 from Magnolia Avenue to Third Street was contracted for $2.7 million in April.[92] That year, work continued on the freeway, and in August, only one traffic signal was left on the highway west of El Cajon, at Ward Road.[93] In August, Dekema announced that bids for the portion between Lake Murray Boulevard and Third Street would be opened the following month; once that was completed, the entire freeway west of El Cajon would be complete.[94] Eastbound lanes between US 395 and Fairmount Avenue opened on November 23.[95]

The portion from the Grossmont summit to Magnolia Avenue and SR 67 was completed in April 1961.[96] By August, the entirety of the freeway west of El Cajon was complete, with the exception of the portions from near Lake Murray Boulevard to near La Mesa Boulevard for $3.1 million, as well as between Magnolia Avenue and the El Cajon eastern city limits for $2.7 million. In addition to this, the part of the freeway from near Grays Well to Ogilby Road in Imperial County was also being constructed for $2.3 million.[97] The 2.3 miles (3.7 km) freeway portion east of Magnolia Avenue that connected with the undivided US 80 opened on September 6.[98] The final section in La Mesa was completed in April 1962.[99] Construction started on the Mountain Springs portion of US 80 in September 1962.[100] That year, US 80 west of the Cabrillo Freeway interchange was declared to be the busiest road in the City of San Diego, at 71,000 daily vehicles.[101]

US 80 was removed from the state highway system in the 1964 state highway renumbering when I-80 was designated; I-8 assumed the routing from San Diego to El Centro and Yuma.[2] However, US 80 signs were posted for several years afterward on the remaining portions of the original asphalt road that had not been bypassed by the freeway.[102] After the freeway was built, the population of Jacumba went from 400 to 200, and many businesses closed or relocated. However, the population began to increase after a few years, and residents began commuting to jobs in El Centro and San Diego.[103] Following a campaign from the local Old Highway 80 Committee and endorsement from the San Diego County Board of Supervisors,[104] the California State Legislature passed a resolution allowing for the route to be designated and signed as a state historic route, Historic U.S. Route 80, in 2006.[105][106]

Visitors to the Current show at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, Hyde Park were directed by the Chapman Brothers with this message.

GET RID OF MEANING. YOUR MIND IS A NIGHTMARE.

Easier said than done when it comes to this art by the Chapman Brothers which features the familiar mutilated bodies and scenes of horrific torture and gruesome ritualised decapitations that do not necessarily contrive to horrify, as this sentence would appear to suggest.

The Chapman brothers are inclined to provide enough comforting context. We Monks were after all invited to enter a brand new swanky art gallery and no art lover as far as we are aware has thus far been harmed or traumatised by a Chapman image.

We entered cautiously and discovered the familiar grim images, scary in a "ghost train" kind of way. The Chapman Klansmen are comedy Klansmen with rainbow socks and comedy smiley faces. The Chapman crucified martyrs are nothing more than harmless corporate Ronald MacDonald effigies, and so very many of them as in the real world.

I found myself failing to "get rid of meaning" by comparing the Chapman Brothers to Richard Dadd, whose "Fairy Feller's" is arguably more horrific, given Dadd's state of mind, but far less horrifically explicit than the Chapman Brothers.

As far as we know the Chapman Brothers are not actually psychotic. They are more inclined to toy with the visitors most visitors go along with the toying. I could not fail to notice two American ladies failing to "get rid of the meaning" They provided me with an in-depth commentary on each particular scene of horror and mutilation as if Ronald MacDonald were a real person and these were scenes from a soap opera, a warped Nazi soap opera.

The miniature horror model show might also appeal to the model makers within all of us boys, seeking the same thrill you might get when you view an architect's model of a new airport or a shopping centre complete with little trees to provide context and scale.

For this reason I did wonder why The Chapman Brothers had not provided a model Hornby Nazi train-set to circulate about the corpses. Yes, I do believe that there is a train spotting model maker and dark grim humour within us all.

We Monks saw "Hell", the earlier Chapman Brothers work which featured similar miniature grotesque models in glass cases. These works which took years of endeavour to construct were destroyed in the cataclysmic MOMART fire in the 2004. They have now been recreated and re-imagined somewhat in the same spirit.

I discussed this with a young "curator" in the gallery. I discovered that the new Serpentine Sackler Gallery was in fact an 1805 listed building and formerly a depositary for gunpowder and such. I again found myself failing to "get rid of the meaning", so I changed the subject and I told her that I was a little scared to go into the central section behind the black curtain, from where I could hear the sounds of horror. She said that I should not be scared and that all would be well if I were to enter..

Beyond the black curtain masked members of the KKK were sitting amongst the visitors watching a Chapman movie. There I observed Mrs Monk sitting next to a KKK pointy hat both of them watching the horror movie as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

There was a Chapmanesque resonance in the movie but no fearful reaction from the visitors. Just the occasional knowing laugh.

A Native American woman stands in the forest with her friend, a large mountain lion. The woman has a painted face, and wears a deer skin dress and a brown fur shawl. The big cat stands next to her with its head just under her hand. Both the woman and the cougar look at you the viewer as if you have disturbed them in their peaceful woods.

This was based on a story I heard as a kid. I've never been able to find the title or a reference to it though. It goes roughly like this:

___

One winter, a Creek Indian village was having a hard time. The harvest was small and the winter was cold. The people were hungry.

Among them was a man named Panther. Panther went out hunting to help feed his people. Unable to find game in the village's usual hunting ground, he decided to trespass in the forest of a sorceress.

In those woods, he came to a river where the sorceress was bathing. He hid behind some rocks and spied upon her. She was beautiful and Panther was smitten by her.

He stayed too long and she caught him. She was angry, and he was afraid that she would use her magic on him in some bad way. So he pleaded with her and told her that he was hunting to help feed his starving village.

The sorceress took pity on Panther and gave him a magic arrow. Whenever he dropped the arrow on the ground, it would point in the direction to go and find game. However, she told him that he had to return the arrow by the next full moon.

Red Panther used the arrow to find many deer over the next few days which he killed and brought back to his village where he was acclaimed a hero. Soon was the day of the next full moon. Panther new he had to take the arrow back to the sorceress, but he did not want to give up the acclaim he had achieved so he decided to keep the arrow.

The next week, he went out hunting but did not return. Other hunters followed his tracks. They headed towards the sorceress's woods. On the way, they changed from the tracks of a man to those of a cat. When they reached the woods, the hunters saw the sorceress. They dared not approach her though, for now she was guarded by a large panther.

30 September: The Longest Table ever in Doel

Wednesday 30 September will be the very last day that people who rent a house in Doel are (officially) allowed to stay in the village. After that day, only 13 house owners will be left behind in a village that may fall prey to thiefs, vandals and other crooks.

Doel artist Denise Aerts, however, is not to be discouraged and invites everybody to come to Doel on Wednesday, 30 September to jointly compose the longest table that has ever been in the streets of the village and celebrate a symbolic "Last Supper" in Doel.

One detail: since there are no more facilities in the village, everybody has to bring his or her own (camping) table and a bag with food and beverages.... Denise and her friends will make sure there is music and a nice atmosphere.

The building of the table starts as of 14 hrs and the supper will begin around 18 hrs.

Denise urgently appeals on all sympathizers and people who do not want the village to disappear to join her symbolic Last Supper in Doel

on 30 September

The summit of Crich Hill is reputed to have been the site of a Beacon Fire, which signalled the sighting of the Spanish Armada in the English Channel in 1588. It is believed that after the thrashing the Spanish received from Drake, his ships and the good old English weather, it was again used to celebrate the victory. In 1988 this most famous naval victory was again celebrated on its 400th anniversary with a new Beacon Post and Brazier being built and in 2002 it was again rebuilt as a cairn and brazier to commemorate HM The Queen's Golden Jubilee.

In 1734 there were a number of small lime kilns on the Hill and the public footpath which runs across the Hill to Crich is believed to have been used by Salt Merchants who packed the salt on horses or mules, transporting it southwards from the Cheshire area.

THE TOWER

The first record of any tower type structure is during the reign of King George III (1760) when a wooden tower was erected to provide both a landmark and a place from which to take in some of the best views available. It is thought that this tower was erected to mark his accession to the Throne. Owing to its wooden construction in such an exposed area, it only lasted about 25 years before being demolished. In 1788, Francis Hurt paid the princely sum of 210 to have a conical limestone tower with a wooden top constructed on the site of the old tower. By about 1843 the conical tower was in such a poor state of repair that a decision was taken to rebuild and in 1849 some of the stones of this conical tower were used to build the base of the new circular tower that was built from grit stone.

The circular tower was opened in 1851 (the year of the Great Exhibition) and it had a stone stairway winding up inside. An engraved tablet set in the wall at the top showed that the tower was 955 feet above sea level.

It could be said that this tower was the forerunner of The Sherwood Foresters Memorial. In June 1856 it was the scene of a jubilant crowd celebrating the end of the Crimean War (1854-56) and Sergeant Wetton of the 95th Derbyshire Regiment, a resident of Crich, was carried to the top of the Hill in a specially adapted chair as he had lost a leg at the Battle of the Alma (20th September 1854). There is no doubt that he would have been happy that the war was over, but it is certain that he would have remembered his Regimental Family and the comrades who never came home. In 1881 the 95th Derbyshire Regiment joined the 45th Nottinghamshire Regiment to form The Sherwood Foresters.

In June of 1882 there was a major landslide in the area of the quarry and this had a serious subsidence effect on the tower, lightning strikes and further minor movements of the ground in the immediate area resulted in the closing of the tower to the public for reasons of safety.

Dovevo leggere, o no, quel libro? In lacrime, pregai Dio senza sosta…

Pensai tra me e me: “Tutto questo è solo vino vecchio in bottiglie nuove!

Allora perché continuano a resistere a Dio Onnipotente e a condannarLo ostinatamente? No!

Chi è che continua a parlare all'umanità? Cadiamo davanti a Lui e apriamo i nostri cuori. Le nostre lacrime sgorgano in riconoscenza, ricoprendo le nostre vesti. Gridiamo riconoscenti verso Dio Onnipotente. Oh, nostro amato! Nostro amato! Pensiamo a Te giorno e notte. Oh, nostro amato! Nostro amato!

Oh, nostro amato! Nostro amato! Amiamo la Tua giustizia. Oh, nostro amato! Nostro amato! I nostri cuori son così colmi di riverenza e noi Ti amiamo così tanto. Oh, nostro amato! Nostro amato! Il Tuo amore è così splendido. Oh, nostro amato! Nostro amato! La Tua essenza è santa e perfetta. Possiamo noi amarTi per l'eternità! Nostro amato!

After finding out that my cousin has her own blog and having read her post on the use of fish sauce, I took this picture to personally vouch for the one that I use at home.

In her post she writes: "Fish sauce is not just for Asian dishes -- it deepens the taste of pretty much any cuisine." So true!

I use it as a "kakushi aji", or hidden taste, to bring out an element of umami (savoriness) in any dish needing support in that area.

It would seem on the surface that all fish sauces are alike, and certainly one is forgiven in believing that given that they all seem to be labeled alike. It sometimes seems as if half of them are named "Phu Quoc", the Vietnamese island reknowned for their fish sauce. (Even in the VN markets I don't think I ever came across a fish sauce imported from Vietnam. One will find that almost all fish sauce imported into the U.S. invariably comes from Thailand, as is the case with the one pictured here...)

And common advice on the internet says that price should be your guide. But it has been my experience that there's really no such thing as an expensive fish sauce - they all seem to be priced in a very narrow pricing range.

I stumbled upon this particular fish sauce after studying many ingredient labels, carefully avoiding the ones with the obvious additives, eyeing the depth and quality of color through their bottles, and blindly trying to divine which bottle spoke out to me as being the most true. But honestly it was just dumb luck. It turned out to be fantastic stuff, or at the very least the only fish sauce that actually tasted like how I (a non-VN gringo) thought a good fish sauce should taste like.

I would later find out that one of the key things to look for in a fish sauce is the word "nhi", which indicates that it's produced from the very first pressing of salted, fermented fish. In a way it's somewhat akin to the very first pressing of olives that results in an extra virgin olive oil (albeit without the fermented fish part!)...

Yes, though it may not sound very appetizing, fermented fish is a very good thing, beyond being easy fodder and a "gimme" for a Fear Factor producer. Even the ancient Romans had their own fish sauce called garum, albeit by the same people who undertook a massive infrastructure project just to deliver lead-tainted water.

Much closer to home and to our time, who hasn't heard of Worcestershire sauce, which is, essentially, a fermented fish sauce.

And then there's the joys of Edo Mae Nigiri Sushi, the process of its creation requiring the pressing of fish onto a small vinegared ball of rice. It is believed by many that an instant form of fermentation occurs in this contact area between fish and rice, rendering the fish proteins and hence subtly transforming its flavors. (Perhaps... ...and if one does not subscribe to that belief, at least one can be assured that the earlier forms of sushi involved well-fermented fish of the non-instant variety!)

PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING!

09. October 2011 – 15. January 2012

Sprengel Museum HannoverSprengel Museum Hannover

IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE

LOWER SAXONY SAVINGS BANK FOUNDATION

PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING! is an exhibition of the works of 31 photographers on a floor area of over 2,000 square metres. Since HOW YOU LOOK AT IT in 2000, this exhibition is the first and only one to provide an all-embracing overview of artistic photography from the 1960s to the present day. The exhibition has been organized by the Sprengel Museum Hannover in collaboration with the Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation. Starting out from the Foundation’s collection of large groups of works by both American and European photographers, the only collection of its kind in Europe, the exhibition explores the history and perspectives of the ‘documentary style’ of photography.

PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING! constitutes yet a further step towards establishing Hanover as an important centre for artistic photography in the north of Germany.

The starting points of the exhibition are the works of Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, William Eggleston, Lee Friedlander, John Gossage, Nicholas Nixon, Martin Parr and Michael Schmidt. The artist photographers Rineke Dijkstra, Paul Graham, Thomas Struth and the photographers of the generations that followed, such as Jitka Hanzlová, Stephen Gill, Jochen Lempert, Elisabeth Neudörfl, Heidi Specker and Tobias Zielony, visualize the world with a style of photography that adheres strictly to the medium and yet is highly subjective. Max Baumann, Boris Mikhailov, Rita Ostrowskaja and Helga Paris extend the perspective with experiences of their own confrontations with different political systems, while Laura Bielau, Thomas Demand, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Wolfgang Tillmans and Jeff Wall use the documentary style of photography as a means of exemplifying the phenomena of visual perception. Many of the works are being exhibited for the very first time.

Integrated into the exhibition are three successive Project Rooms organized by three guest curators and each taking place for the duration of one month. They thematize three different methods of collecting and three different ways of using photography.

From 9.10. until 30.10.2011 the artist Thierry Geoffroy will investigate the idea behind the title of the exhibition – PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING! – and ask: Who calls whom and what, and for what purpose, and out of what interests? On 1.11.2011 Markus Schaden will be setting up a study room devoted to the photography book as a ‘storage medium’ and collector’s item. From 6.12.2011 until 15.1.2012 Wilhelm Schürmann will be exposing the obsessions that can be the driving force behind a private collection of photographs, graphics, paintings and sculptures.

In the run-up to the exhibition HOW YOU LOOK AT IT at the Sprengel Museum Hannover, which was curated by Thomas Weski and Heinz Liesbrock on the occasion of EXPO 2000, the Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation began to purchase comprehensive groups of works by selected American and European photographers. Since then, the collecting activity of the Foundation has been focused on those works of photography that may be understood to be in the tradition of the ‘documentary style’ (Walker Evans, 1903-1975) and have been exercising a strong influence on photography since the end of the 1960s. Thus it has been possible – thanks not least to the recommendations of a high-calibre advisory board – to build up a photographic collection distinguished by its concentration on groups of works. In this regard the collection is unique in Europe.

The Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation’s collection and its perspective are now to be the subject of the present exhibition, which is being mounted jointly with the Sprengel Museum Hannover and also in the context of the Museum’s own well-cultivated photography tradition, which began in 1979 and can boast exhibitions of such great exponents of photography as Karl Blossfeldt, El Lissitzky, Judith Joy Ross and Michael Schmidt, to name only a few of many, or the “SPECTRUM” International Prize for Photography of the Foundation of Lower Saxony. ‘Collecting’ manifests itself here as an open system that operates self-reflexively in the aforementioned Project Rooms and is future-oriented and discussion-friendly in the exhibition’s supplementary events.

PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING! is accompanied by a copious publication (Steidl, Göttingen). Visitors will also be offered a comprehensive information programme.

The exhibition has been curated by Inka Schube, Curator for Photography and Media Art, Sprengel Museum Hannover, and Thomas Weski, Professor of “Curatorial Cultures”, Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig.

Introduction to AlgebraMathematics is a kind of subject without which any of the class syllabus is not furnished. It's the important topic and also the includes complex part of studies every time. Today we are going to take you on the ride of your journey throughout the schooling with mathematics but mainly we will discuss one of the mathematical branch rather than whole math content. Today's highlighted branch is Algebra, so let us start first with what Algebra is all about then go through the content which students need to learn till class 12th from their starting line. Algebra is preferred to be used as a tool to solve complex optimized techniques of solving mathematical queries. The problem is that Algebra is very vast itself, so until students not get aware from whole algebra concept till then he is not able to use its fundamentals as tool. Initial classes of students include introduction part of algebra and as they move towards their upper classes Algebra problems evaluation is the target for students and finally when they reach to 10 +2 class, that time their total past learning of algebra is needed to br compiled in a single form to implement the principles and formulas together in other applications solving.

airderien35.free.fr/Actu.html

The Ford Rotunda was originally built as an exhibit building for the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. After the close of the Fair, the building was taken apart and shipped to Dearborn, and reassembled on Rotunda Drive, across from the Central Office Building (the "World Headquarters" for that time period). During the year, the Company would have various automotive exhibits for the public and local school children. Tragically, while making roof repairs on Friday, November 9th, 1962, the hot tar roof ignited, and before the fire department could arrive, the building was pretty much destroyed. A sad day in Ford history, and a loss to the children and families who visited regularly.

In 2014 I started working on a design for our #BritArmyAndFriends reunion at #SpaceFestVI

Here is the collection of my brainstorming and the design process:

And additionally some background information:

My latest design features the #NebraSkydisk - one of the most beautiful, astronomical artefacts ever found - until today.

This is the oldest-known image of our cosmos so far, with an estimated age of 3600 years (!!!), the earliest known diagram of the heavens, which makes it one or may be THE most important archaeological discovery of the twenty-first century.

It was discovered on July 4th 1999 near the city of Nebra in Germany and since then fascinates not only the experts.

I have to admit that I fell in love with this beauty as soon as I heard about it several years ago.

And I always wanted to paint it one day.

So what better match could there be than combining this masterpiece, created by stargazers several thousand years ago, who loved observing (and already started understanding) our night sky,

with #SpaceFestVI, which will bring people together again, who come from all around the world to share their love of space and our beautiful blue marble … ?!

#OnceUponATime

One year ago, in April 2013 I was looking forward to an amazing event.

A group of #SpaceTweeps was planning to meet in Tucson / Arizona for #SpaceFestV ( www.spacefest.info/V/Astro.html )

Some of us had met each other in person earlier, some on Facebook several months in advance in a group called the #BritArmyAtSpacefest and some #HonoraryMembers joined our group at #SpaceFest itself.

This event turned out even better than I (and I guess many of us) ever could have imagined!

Meeting like-minded people with a great diversity of backgrounds and professions from literally all over the world in the middle of Arizona and sharing with them at least 4 days, while being amongst some of the most remarkable #SpaceLegends #MoonWalkers #MeteoriteMen #AsteroidHunters #Scientists and other #SPACEHOLIX was unforgettable.

Since that time our group is in regular contact (mostly via social media) and as we didn't want to wait a whole year for #SpaceFestVI , we got together again in November 2013 to share another great event:

We enjoyed our #ItIsStonegengeReunionOClock where our group of about 20 people had the pleasure to getting exclusive access in a private tour to the inner circle of the stones during sunset.

Surrounded by many other highlights and #MiniTweetups in UK this was a brilliant weekend.

Since then we are looking forward to our next reunion at #SpaceFestVI which will take place in Pasadena / California in May 2014 ( www.spacefest.info/VI/Astros.html )

What I had started in 2013 after getting back to painting after a very long time,

became kind of a tradition in the meantime:

Inspired by several #Space- and #ScienceTweetups I painted logos for every event I attended

and got them printed on badges for all participants and also some on t-shirts etc.

And 2013 has been quite a ride :-)

Catedral de El Burgo de Osma

www.lafronteradelduero.com/Paginas/el_burgo_de_osma.html

Our Lady of Lourdes & St Joseph, Leigh on Sea, Essex

Blog page

I passed OLoL&SJ (apologies for the acronym) on my way to St Clement and had to stop. This RC church had fallen off my radar and would have been missed had it not been so arresting.

Built in the 1920's to the design of the parish priest, Fr FW Gilbert, it stands as his personal testament to God. Full of good period glass, a very Catholic reredos, lectern and rood; unusually a SE tower but, to my mind, the most exceptional feature is the Lady Chapel which is a scaled replica of Lourdes.

A rich priest's homage to Gothic architecture with a distinct Catholic twist - I wish this was my parish church!

Neither Pevsner nor Mee covered it (inherent anti Catholicism at work?) so Taking Stock instead:

An idiosyncratic Gothic church of the 1920s, very much a personal work by the parish priest Fr F. W. Gilbert, but closely following the design of Charles Nicholson’s church of St Alban at Westcliff-on-Sea. The church was sympathetically extended in the 1960s. The interior is rich in fittings, some designed by Fr Gilbert.

The original church (now the parish hall) began life as a timber-framed, corrugated iron drill hall, originally built for the Essex Volunteers in 1900 under the supervision of Major Burles and purchased in 1913. The site of the present church was purchased by the Rev. F.W. Gilbert in 1924, using donations and his private money. It appears that Fr Gilbert acted as his own architect, his design borrowing heavily from that of the Anglican church of St Alban the Martyr at Westcliff-on-Sea, built in 1898-1908 from designs by Nicholson & Corlette. The Gilbert family promised £2,000 once building work commenced. The contract price was £12,234. The builders were Messrs Marshall & Smith of Grays but Fr Gilbert acted as his own clerk of works, using local labour, including unemployed men from Grays. The foundation stone was laid on 7 October 1924 and the church opened in September 1925. The presbytery was built in 1925.

The church was sympathetically extended in 1965-66 by Burles, Newton & Partners, in the same style and materials; the west wall was moved twenty feet further out to create a choir gallery, west door and porch and a baptistery with organ chamber above. Proposals to replace the old hall with a new and larger building were prepared in 2007 but have not yet been implemented.

The church is a large and handsome structure in a free Gothic style. The walls are faced with random rubble with stone dressings. Apparently much of the stone was quarried near Glasgow and was originally used as ballast in lighters intended for the Gallipoli campaign, which were later bought by a local ship owner, who donated the stone for the building of the church. The roof is covered in plain tiles. On plan the church comprises a long nave and sanctuary under a continuous roof swept down over north and south aisles, southwest porch, northwest organ chamber, southeast double transept and southeast tower. The gabled west end is Burles & Newton’s work of the 1960s and has a broad straight-headed doorway flanked by small trefoiled windows with a large six-light traceried window above. On the north side is a tall transeptal organ chamber and then the low side wall of the north aisle with three pairs of small trefoiled windows. On the south side is a small projecting porch and then the low side wall of the south aisle, a double transept with three-light traceried windows in the gabled ends and then the bold square south east tower. The tower is of three stages with a traceried two-light window on the south side of the lowest stage and pairs of small openings in the two stages above. The tower has a single large diagonal buttress at the southeast corner, crenellated flint-faced parapets and a tiled spirelet. The east end wall of the sanctuary is articulated with three round-headed blind arches. This wall fronts the garden of the large presbytery which is attached to the northeast corner of the church, and the church and presbytery together form a strong architectural composition.

The interior walls are all plastered and painted with plain flooring of timber. There is a west gallery in the 1960s extension and nave arcades of four bays of simple pointed chamfered arches on square chamfered concrete piers. Above each pier the nave is spanned by the tie beams of the roof and above them is a five-sided timbered ceiling. The aisles have lean-to roofs and are also timbered. The east bay on the south side is a small transept. There is no chancel arch in the usual sense, but the division between nave and sanctuary is marked by pilaster strips on the walls with a rood beam at half- height and a timber rib spanning the roof between them. The sanctuary has a single large open arch on each side and is richly furnished. The east wall in particular is lined to full-height with carved decoration. The floor is black and white marble. On the south side of the sanctuary is a second transept divided from the first by a double arch resting on dwarf double columns with ornamental Gothic capitals. In the east wall of this transept a chamfered pointed arch leads to the base of the tower which contains a Lourdes grotto.

The church is rich in fittings. These include the carved timber reredos filling the whole east wall, the extraordinary pulpit with figures of evangelists supported by cherubs, apparently designed by Fr Gilbert, who also designed the figures of the rood beam, the elaborate oak stalls in the sanctuary and the font at the west end of the nave given in memory of Col. Knight (d.1891) with its stone bowl on clustered columns and a surrounding floor of Cosmati work.

There is some stained glass in the church including the west window by Whitefriars and other windows by Goddard & Gibbs. The scale model of the Lourdes grotto was built by Cyril Psaila (d. 1931).

Since 2001 we have been trying to find Digiscope solutions, from the perfect camera, adapters, lenses, eyepieces, scopes and mounting systems. Now we have great camera, lenses, eyepieces Super Scopes and mounting systems. To my way of thinking Adapters have always been a challenge and the weakest link in Digiscoping. The Manufactures of the adapters have been camera brand specific, over engineered, or have depended on the filter threads of a camera or camera lens to support totally the weight of the camera. No Good, I promise that no lens manufacture would recommend that. Referring to the term “over engineered” I am referring to adapters like the swing models. Personally I believe that they lack support for the camera and seem to be easily damaged while in the field. The new ATX/STX Swarovski seems to have corrected the major concern of camera support, not depending of the filter threads to support the camera system unlike the DCA or the DA-10 from Kowa what I currently use. I have broken in half 4 lenses in the past years using those systems before I tried Support Brackets like the TSN-DA3. Support brackets are great; the scope, eyepiece, adapter and camera are now one secure solid piece if one can remember to lock everything down. I have to confess that due to my negligence of not checking to see if everything was tightened I have send a Scope in for repair and ruined an expensive DSLR when it smashed on the asphalt road. Weight is another issue. The Kowa TSN-DA3 Digiscope Support Bracket weighs 2.58 pounds. The one I own went to a machine shop and all none structural Aluminum was milled away cutting the weight to just over 2 pounds. Some of my days in the field carry me 8 or more miles walking. So like a back packer every pound counts. Up until now the TSN-DA3 was very important to keep my kit functioning and secure. So I carried that 2 + additional pounds.

At the Space Coast Festival two different people showed me a new Adapter. Angie “just a birder” bought one she is excited and bragging about hers. It was of high quality machined Aluminum that will work with 4/3 camera as well as some DSLR and P&S cameras. A minor sleeve change (inner ring) and it will adapt to any spotting scope eyepiece. It is not expensive and best of all the weight of the camera stresses the scope not the filter threads of the lens. There for a support bracket is not necessary, cutting my carry weight 2+ pounds. I ordered one.

Yesterday I received my Digidapter. I watched the video on www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVGfQTd8UPQl for quick assembly instructions. I inspected it for deficits like over engineering or a key feature not considered. I could not any faults. It was designed for quality, for the speed and smoothness in mounting the camera on a scope coming back to same position each time without adjustment or alignment.

•The fasteners are of the highest quality, brass and stainless.

•The screw design for mounting the camera in the tripod mount is superior.

•The brass stop screws on the mounting plate are designed for finger tightening, no fear of stripping the brass parts from over tightening. The camera comes back to the same spot every time.

•The elevation plate has milled slots so only the provided Allen key is necessary to lock the camera in place.

•The camera does not have to be removed from the Digidapter to replace batteries and flash cards. .

• Coupling the camera to the eyepiece is a breeze. Close tolerance machining and the highest quality anodizing is why it is smooth and easy.

•To change from one scope manufacture to another or if the eyepiece is different in size all that is needed is a different inner ring, all of the other parts will remain the same. This means for those scope owners that would like a functional adapter for a Pentax, Celestron, Vortex or Vanguard scope it is now available at a reasonable price.

•Overall, it is solid and functional, easy to use, returns to the same position with each mounting. No binding, pieces glide together, no effort. Precision and effortless in use, protecting the camera and eyepiece from stress damage. No adapter that I have seen mounts the camera and has it ready to shoot faster, safer and with more precision.

•The Digidapter is the best I have seen.

The big question at the Space Coast Festival was would the new 20mm f/1.7 ll ASPH Lumix lens works with this adapter. That lens is short like a Pancake lens but it is about 2 inches in diameter. I phoned my order to Paul Sayegh the owner and designer of the Digidapter. We spent hours on the phone discussing the 4/3s and some of the unique lenses that this system is creating. I had the lens in hand with a pair of dial calipers. I measured and re-measured the key points of the lens and measurement in relation to the camera. I took and then emailed to Paul the photos of the GX 7 and lens and added the measurement to the photos. After receiving the photos we talked again and at Paul’s request I re-measured everything once more. In three days I received my Digidapter and it was perfect.

Paul is an engineer, a designer, a communicator and a great machinist with an advanced knowledge of stress and tolerances. Paul is a big lens photographer that found Digiscoping and knows the importance of Digiscoping as a tool in photography. Digidapter and Paul Sayegh deserve our support.
