I've been meaning to check out the food trucks by the Red Hook Ball Fields for the past 2 years or so. Finally got the chance this past weekend. I wish I had a bigger stomach so I could try more stuff because all I had was the mixed ceviche and spicy pork huarache. But the 2 things I tried was pretty good.

Spicy Pork Huarache So this pic doesn't highlight the best part of this dish which is the meat hiding under all that guac and salsa. I know, I could have moved it and focused on the bits hanging out on the side. But I was in too much of a hurry to dig in. Plus, my friend was hungry too. We joked about having a support group for People With Friends Who Won't Let Them Eat Until Food Porn Has Been Properly Aquired. There needs to be pics of people on the sidelines with forks in their hands drooling and anxiously waiting when it comes to food porn.

Mixto Ceviche I had my reservations about getting ceviche off a tiny food cart especially on a hot summer day (there was a heat advisory the day I went) but it was pretty good. In fact, it's better than some ceviche I've had in restaurants.

The only con about getting food at the Red Hook Ball Fields is that there's not much else nearby (unless you want to take a stroll to IKEA or walk further up for the shops on Smith and Court). My friend mentioned the last time she was here, she met some folks who made a trek all the way from Queens via subway just for the food. I don't know, food was good. Just not sure it was THAT good. But you always gotta try it once I guess.

There was one more thing we really wanted to try which was the papusa. But the line for that truck was pretty long and we were already stuffed from the other food we got. Think I will have to make another trip back just for that. Although I heard you might be able to get it at the Brooklyn Flea as well. Anybody tried the papusa? Is it worth the wait in line?

Every day the mails carry tons of requests for donations for one cause or another, some worthy, some questionable.

But recently several hundred Chicagoans received a plea that some might consider, well, kind of odd.

A real estate woman who got one of the letters passed it along and asked: "Can you believe this?"

It was sent by Steven J. Thayer, a 30-year-old lawyer, who says he specializes in helping entrepreneurs raise money to start businesses.

And he began by describing a man named Stan who came to him a couple of years ago with a plan to open a carwash on the border of Chicago and the suburb of Calumet Park.

"Like most of our entrepreneurial clients," Thayer wrote, "Stan was enthusiastic about pursuing his dream. Stan's dream was to build the largest multipurpose carwash facility in the country.

"The carwash would include the longest tunnel wash, an 11 bay self wash, a gas station, an oil and lube shop and a convenience mart.

"At the time, Stan only had sketches of the proposed design of the project. He had spent the last 15 years contemplating the concept and was finally ready to pursue his dream.

"The only problem is that Stan's dream carwash cost over $2.8 million."

Thayer then went on to describe Stan's tireless efforts to raise the money with which to build the biggest multipurpose carwash in the country: his dealings with the Small Business Administration, oil companies, the land owner, banks, friends, relatives and other potential investors.

". . . Numerous hours of passionate labor and tears from Stan, his family and his closest friends."

As Thayer described Stan's gripping quest to build the nation's biggest multipurpose carwash, it sounded almost like something out of "The Right Stuff," the story of our astronauts.

"Stan was just one letter away from closing on a lifelong dream . . ."

Then came this one letter, the one from the Small Business Administration. But it said, nope, there was too much debt and not enough equity.

"On April 22, 1996," Thayer wrote, "with the stroke of a pen, the project died.

"Never in my life have I seen a person work so hard to pursue a dream, overcome so many obstacles, and fail. If I can help it, Stan will not be the first."

Then came the pitch.

"My goal in writing this letter is to appeal to the entrepreneurial spirit inside each of us. The Grandstand Auto Bath is the epitome of the entrepreneurial dream. It's the project that could never happen, the dream that would never come true.

"With your help the dream can come true. Together we can make it happen. My plan is simple, we need to raise enough money to balance out the project. My guess is that we only need a few hundred thousand dollars to balance out the project, although the more the better to cover unforeseen contingencies. I believe a fair amount for a contribution to such an entrepreneurial dream would be about $10 a person, although larger contributions are always welcome.

"The logistics are also very simple. If you would like to make a contribution, send a $10 check to (address). We will turn the money over to Stan as needed to keep the project moving.

"Please keep in mind that some of your contributions will go toward repaying Stan's personal debt that helped keep the project, Stan and his family alive for the past few years.

"Your contributions are not tax deductible and are considered a personal gift to Stan. If we don't raise enough money to complete the project, we will still turn the funds over to Stan to help him get his life reorganized. He certainly deserves it. -- Mike Royko, Chicago Tribune, 5/30/1996

"Tausende Menschen stehen auf gegen Judenhass"

Von Richard Herzinger,

Korrespondent für Politik

und Gesellschaft

"Wir wollen, dass sich Juden in Deutschland sicher fühlen." Dies war die zentrale Botschaft von Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel auf der vom Zentralrat der Juden veranstalteten Kundgebung "Steh auf! Nie wieder Judenhass" in Berlin.

"Schlimmsten antisemitischen Parolen seit vielen, vielen Jahrzehnten"

Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis), Estero Bluffs, Cayucos, CA (Jack)

www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn74118.html

Two species of skunk are found in California, the spotted skunk (Spilogale gracilis) and the striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis), which is the species most commonly found around homes.

Although originally considered members of the weasel family, recent genetic research has placed skunks into their own family Mephitidae. Both skunk species produce an oily, yellow sulfur-alcohol compound that contains sulfuric acid. This pungent liquid is stored in two separate scent glands located on each side of the anus and can be squirted accurately at targets as far as 6 to 10 feet away as a self-defense mechanism. The secretion is acrid enough to cause nausea and can produce severe burning and temporary blindness if it strikes the eyes.

Striped skunks are primarily active at dawn, dusk, and at night but can be active during the daytime, particularly in human-use areas. Spotted skunks rarely venture out during the daytime. Both skunk species consume a highly-varied diet including insects, grubs, earthworms, small rodents, snakes, lizards, frogs, mushrooms, berries and fruit, pet food, and garbage. Skunks will also opportunistically feed on bird eggs, which can result in substantial losses to ground-nesting birds when skunk densities are high. Food items found in their diet will vary seasonally depending on availability.

The average life span of skunks is around 2 to 3.5 years, although they can occasionally live up to 7 years in the wild.

Skunks often den in burrows. They will often use abandoned burrows dug by ground squirrels, foxes, or coyotes and will enlarge them if necessary. If dens are scarce, they will readily use brush piles, hollow logs, and culverts. In urban settings, they den under decks, porches, or beneath buildings. If other suitable dens are unavailable, skunks will dig their own dens. Skunks do not hibernate; but in regions with colder weather, they may congregate in communal dens during the winter.

Skunks are attracted to residential areas by the availability of food, water, and shelter. They become a nuisance when they live under porches, decks, garden tool sheds, or homes. Their scent is usually not welcome around homes, and they often spray dogs that bark and approach rapidly. They like to feed on ripening berries and fallen fruit and cause other garden problems by digging while in search of grubs and other insects. They often search for food in lawns by digging small pits or cone-shaped depressions that range from 3 to 5 inches across. Like raccoons, they may also damage lawns by rolling back sections of sod in search of insects.

Skunks have an excellent sense of smell and good hearing, but they have very poor vision. This poor vision explains why they are often hit by cars when crossing roads. A skunk may not react if a person more than 10 feet away is quiet and standing still or moving slowly.

Healthy skunks are mild-tempered animals. They are not aggressive and, given the opportunity, prefer to flee rather than fight. They usually only defend themselves when suddenly frightened, cornered, or harmed. Skunks usually provide a warning before discharging their scent by stamping their forefeet rapidly, hissing, and arching their tail over their back. Skunks prefer not to spray given the time required to replenish their spray supply. Therefore, using caution around skunks should substantially reduce the possibility of being sprayed.

Disease concerns occur when skunks take up residence in an urban or suburban setting. In California, skunks are one of the most common carriers of rabies, a viral disease transmitted by the bite of an infected animal. Skunks can also be carriers of other diseases including leptospirosis, listeriosis, canine distemper, canine hepatitis, Q-fever, and tularemia.

The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is the U.S. Navy’s primary strike and air superiority aircraft. It is an updated version of the F-18C/D, featuring a 20 percent larger airframe, 7,000 lb heavier empty weight, and 15,000 lb heavier maximum weight than the original Hornet. The Super Hornet carries 33 percent more internal fuel, increasing mission range by 41 percent and endurance by 50 percent over the earlier Hornet.

The F/A-18 E/F acquisition program was an unparalleled success. The aircraft emerged from Engineering and Manufacturing Development meeting all of its performance requirements on cost, on schedule and 400 pounds under weight. All of this was verified in Operational Verification testing, the final exam, passing with flying colors receiving the highest possible endorsement.

The first operational cruise of Super Hornet, F/A-18 E, was with VFA-115 onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) on July 24, 2002, and saw initial combat action on Nov. 6, 2002, when they participated in a strike on hostile targets in the "no-fly" zone in Iraq.

Super Hornet, flew combat sorties from Abraham Lincoln during Southern Watch, demonstrating reliability and an increased range and payload capability. VFA 115 embarked aboard Lincoln expended twice the amount of bombs as other squadrons in their airwing (with 100% accuracy) and met and exceeded all readiness requirements while on deployment. The Super Hornet cost per flight hour is 40% of the F-14 Tomcat and requires 75% less labor hours per flight hour.

The forward fuselage is unchanged from the C/D Hornet, but the remainder of the aircraft shares little with earlier F/A-18C/D models. The fuselage was stretched by 34 inches to make room for fuel and future avionics upgrades and increased the wing area by 25%. However, the Super Hornet has 42% fewer structural parts than the original Hornet design. The General Electric F414 engine, developed from the Hornet's F404, has 35% additional thrust over most of the aircraft's flight envelope. The Super Hornet can return to an aircraft carrier with a larger load of unspent fuel and munitions than the original Hornet.

Other differences include approximately rectangular intakes for the engines and two extra wing hard points for payload (for a total of 11), retaining previous hardpoints on the bottom centerline, wingtips, and two conformal fuselage positions. Among the most significant aerodynamic changes are the enlarged leading edge extensions which provide improved vortex lifting characteristics in high angle of attack maneuvers, and reduce the static stability margin to enhance pitching characteristics. This results in pitch rates in excess of 40 degrees per second, and high resistance to departure from controlled flight.

The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is an attack aircraft as well as a fighter through selected use of external equipment and advanced networking capabilities to accomplish specific missions. This “force multiplier” capability gives the operational commander more flexibility in employing tactical aircraft in a rapidly changing battle scenario. In its fighter mode, it serves as escort and fleet air defense. In its attack mode, it provides force projection, interdiction, and close and deep air support.

This is a 1958 "Field & Stream" Travel Trailer ( canned ham ). This vintage style of camping trailers were referred to as "car trailers" back when they were being built because of their size, light weight and ease of towing. The cabin part of the trailer is 12' long, the tongue is 2' making the total length only 14'. It pulls beautifully going down the highway, no fish tailing at all. You can forget your pulling a trailer.

This trailer is 95% original, no modifications. This trailer has not been restored and I have only made a couple of small repairs. If you are looking for a great platform for making a complete restoration then this would be an absolutely great trailer for such a project.

The interior is all wood, top to bottom and front to back and it is all original wood. I have installed a self-contained 12 volt electrical system and it doesn't need 120 volt. Everything runs off of 12 volts. However all of the original 120 volt wiring is still in place and hasn't been touched, even the original 120v light fixtures are still in place. All of the cabinet hardware is still in place, working and original. All the hinges, handles, and everything is original. The original "icebox" and oven/stove are still in the camper and work great. It also has the original factory installed "Kenmore" cabin heater and it also works great.

When I got the trailer someone had changed the paint scheme so I re-painted it to the original design. The rear couch makes into a double bed. Above the rear couch it has a removable bunk bed/hammock that is original factory equipment also. The dinette also makes into a double bed. There is a lot of storage in the camper. It also has a 10 gallon fresh water tank with a manual hand pump.

The trailer also comes with 2 30 lb propane tanks, a new spare tire and wheel.

The following items are new in the past three months:

New Interior 12 volt light throughout the camper

New 240 watt solar panel

New "Sunforce" 12v, 30 amp charge controller

4 new "Everstart" 750 cold crank amp deep cell marine batteries

New "Cen-Tech" 1500 watt continuous , 3000 surge 120v power inverter (for microwave, etc.)

New Rival 700 watt microwave

New manual water pump for sink

New Shakespeare SeaWatch 15" Marine TV Antenna (model 3015)

Toshiba 17' Flat Screen TV

All new blinds on the windows

New roof top vent

This is one great little camper. I bought it for hunting plus the nostalgia. It was used this past hunting season and worked great. However with four adult men it was a little cramped. So I plan to up size for next year. I pulled it off road in BLM land in Teller County and down in the Phantom Canyon area and had no problems at all.

Because this trailer is extremely rare there are not many sources of photos to be had but you can follow the link below to another "Field & Stream" trailer. As you can see the interiors are very similar as it is all original like mine: girlcamper.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

(Update) You can see a video of the interior of my camper here: youtu.be/NA1VfPU8Sd8

Now the best part last: YES, I DO HAVE A CLEAN CLEAR TITLE IN HAND, AND CURRENT REGISTRATION ALSO. So unlike most trailers you see of this vintage you will not have a problem with registration and it will be registered as a "Field and Stream" not a home-made trailer as is usually the case with trailers bought without a title.

If you have questions please ask. I am asking $5000.00 cash, make offer, no trades. I will sell it to the first person who makes me an agreeable offer with CASH ONLY. I will consider local delivery after the cash transaction.

ABOUT THOMAS

Currently residing in Manhattan, Thomas Bergeron has performed across North America, Europe, and Asia as a jazz and classical musician with orchestras, chamber groups, small jazz groups, show bands, as a soloist, and can be heard on the Naxos and Koch record labels.

He is a sought after teacher and clinician across the Northeast, currently serving as Studio Teacher of Trumpet, Director of Brass Chamber Music, and jazz coach at Williams College and Bennington College.

Tom is an active freelancer, working in all styles throughout New York, New England, and beyond. He currently serves as principal trumpet with the Berkshire Symphony, plays regularly with the Vermont Symphony, and performs every Sunday afternoon with his jazz trio at Julius' in the West Village of Manhattan.

Mr. Bergeron holds an M.M. and an A.D. in Trumpet Performance from Yale, where he received the John Swallow Award for excellence in brass playing and won the Woolsey Hall Concerto Competition. Thomas also holds a B.A. in Business Management from The Isenberg School at UMass. While at Yale, Tom served as Assistant Director of the Yale Jazz Ensemble and as a T.A. for Allan Dean, teaching Yale College trumpet students.

As an educator, Thomas recently created the "Music and Creative Writing" outreach program in New Haven's public school system. During regular visits to inner-city school classrooms, he helped young students write stories inspired by his original jazz compositions, and then incorporated their writings into the pieces.

As a founding member of the Reveille Trumpet Collective (www.reveilletrumpet.org), Tom has dedicated himself to the progressive new music movement, and in particular, exploring new relationships between composers and performers, and new ways of conceiving, performing, and presenting contemporary "art" music to reach wider audiences. In 2009, he commissioned and premiered a Trumpet Concerto by Jay Wadley for trumpet, winds, and live electronics.

Mr. Bergeron has appeared as a soloist with the Hartford Symphony, has recorded with the Albany Symphony and Schola Cantorum, and has performed with The Smothers Brothers, Arlo Guthrie, The Triton Brass Quintet, Albany's Dogs of Desire, the I/O Ensemble, Orchestra New England, the New Hampshire Symphony, The New Haven Symphony, The Yale Philharmonia, and Emmanuel Music in Boston. He is a founding member of Brother Jocephus and the Love Revival Revolution Orchestra, and a seasonal player and Band Master with Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Lines. Tom also plays with the salsa bands Mikata and Agua Por Chocolate, and the pop group The Prescription.

An easy project I did with my elementary art class...all you need is foil, spray paint, leaves and steel wool. You can read about it here, if you like:

Rainbow Serpent

The following has been sourced from www.barry.warmkessel.com/AUSTR1-3.html

The Rainbow Serpent Shelter is an enormous painting of a Serpent. It has a length of 6.1 metres (20 feet), the longest serpent drawing in Australia. Its big head resembles that of a dragon, with rows of fearsome teeth in the jaws. The distance between the tips of the distended jaws is almost a metre. The spine and rib structure of the beast are carefully indicated. The whole composition is beautifully painted, with fine lines of red ochre on a white background.

The serpent plays an important role in all major religions, but also in the myths of the region. To Aborigines, they are among the most potent and profound of all rock paintings. In its various guises, the Rainbow Serpents of western Arnhem Land originated from the sea. The scholar Mr. G. Chaloupka believes this Serpent is called 'Aburga' painted within the last 1,500 years by the now extinct Amurdak-speaking Malakiri clan.

Authors Roberts and Parker write in their book "Ancient Ochres, the Aboriginal Paintings of Mount Borradaile": "This is a dry, accessible shelter with no signs of habitation, indicating that it was strictly a ceremonial site. There are various habitation shelters in the immediate vicinity. In this particular shelter there is very little art other than the main image, and there have been no images superimposed over any part of it. Clearly, this is testimony to the importance of this painting."

More Western Arnhem Land images in Album Arnhem Land

Without doubt the "Catacombs" at Mount Borradaile in Arnhem Land would be the most memorable place that Australia has to offer. Difficult of access, Davidson's Lodge at Mount Borradaile has a lease over 700 sq km of wilderness and is only available to a limited number of visitors.

The "Catacombs" - located nearby - have been formed in Pre-Cambrian sandstone rocks that have essentially lain unchanged for around 600 million years. The sandstone has been eroded by wind and water creating a massive cave system that is peppered with unbelievable Aboriginal art. Evidence suggests that aboriginal people inhabited these areas 40,000 years ago. The artwork appears to been made after the end of the the last ice age - around 10,000 years ago.

Spartacus Blood And Sand series dvd is a Starz television series that premiered on January 22, 2010. Spartacus: Blood and Sand focuses on the historical figure of Spartacus (played by Andy Whitfield), a Thracian gladiator who from 73 to 71 BC led a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Executive producers Steven S. DeKnight and Robert Tapert focused on structuring the events of Spartacus' obscure early life leading to the records of history. Spartacus Blood And Sand season dvd has been rated TV-MA for graphic violence, strong sexual content, and coarse language.

4.0-liter Tipo 209 V12 cylinders (330 cc per cylinder)

300 CV @ 6600 rpm

Number of units produced: 50 examples

Production period: 1963

The Ferrari 330 America is a hermaphrodite introduced by Ferrari in 1963 as the successor of the 250.

The 330 America was simply a 250 GT/E with a larger engine, the new 4.0 L Tipo 209 V12, with 300 CV @ 6600 rpm.

"330" refers to the approximate displacement of each single cylinder.

All 330 models used an evolution of the 400 Superamerica's 4.0 L Colombo V12 engine. It was substantially changed for the 330 cars, however, with wider bore spacing and the notable use of a true alternator rather than a dynamo generator.

The 330 GTC/GTS (598/100 examples 1966-1968) shared their chassis with the 275, only the 330 GT 2+2 (1099 examples, 1964-1967) was a truly unique product.

Ferrari 275 und 330 GT 2+2 have their transmission at the rear-axle (transaxle-layout) for better weight distribution.

A text, in english, from www.arthurgrosset.com/sabirds/burnished-bufftanager.html :

Burnished-buff Tanager (Tangara cayana)

Male Burnished-buff Tanager, Parque Olhos D'água Brasília, Brazil, 20/07/2007.

There are several subspecies of Burnished-buff Tanager and they are normally divided into two groups: the cayana group found north of the Amazon and in Venezuela and Colombia, and the flava group found in south and east Brazil.

Male Burnished-buff Tanager.

The main difference between the two groups is that the male of the flava group, as shown in the first two photos, has a broad black line running from the throat down the middle of the belly. This is lacking in the cayana group. The female is much duller and lacks the black below.

Male Burnished-buff Tanager.

They are found in savannas, cerrado, gallery woodland and forest borders.

Tamanho: 14,5 cm

It was a shame that I was in the porta-potty during this section of the Bulldada Auction, as I would have definitely bid on this book. It was a book of cults, and it included my grandfather's cult of the Church Universal And Triumphant (aka CUT aka Summit Lighthouse). Elizabeth Clare Prophet (mentioned in the first sentence) is my grandfather's 2nd wife, and kind of stole his holy thunder after he died in 1973. But Rev. Eggplant did let check to see if CUT was in his cult book -- and it was! Reading a book about a cult while hanging out with another cult? Priceless.

Here's how church-goers view him:

Herjólfsbærinn (Herjólfur´s farmhouse), Herjólfsdalur (Herjólfur's valley), Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands), Iceland

www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/Iceland/Vestmannaeyj...

The farmhouse in Herjólfsdalur is a prototype of what might have been the oldest human habitation signs in Iceland.

The remains of the farm was discovered in 1924, when the first director of the National Museum was doing excavation work in Herjólfsdalur valley. He discovered 3 ruins; one long-house and two smaller houses. It seems like it was the long-house of Herjólfur Bárðarson, the first settler of Vestmannaeyjar islands. So the old remains might date back to the early 9th century.

An extensive digging took place in Herjólfsdalur from 1971-1983 - being delayed by the volcanic eruption in Heimaey in Vestmannaeyjar islands in 1973. The remains of 8 houses were discovered from 4-5 building periods. The conclusion was that the oldest remains might date back to the 8th or even 7th century. Iceland was considered to be settled around 874, so this is controversial.

In 2006 a farm was built in Herfjólfsdalur in the liking of the farm that stood here in the 10th century. The farm is a long-house and an outhouse, built with rocks and turf.

___________________________________________

Herjólfsdalur is also the site of Þjóðhátíð, an annual Icelandic camping festival:

On the last weekend of July or on the first weekend of August, some 10,000 people flock to the only inhabited Westmann island for a music festival. Scandinavian bands like Sigur Rós take to the stage, but the music is perhaps the least remarkable aspect of the event.

The stage is in the shadow of a volcano, which last erupted in 1973. The chilly climate induces an extreme degree of heart- and hide-warming camaraderie, with singsongs rolling across the site between sets. At night, the festival hotfoots it to the huge bonfire halfway up the volcano.

www.dalurinn.is/en/page/history

www.dalurinn.is/en/page/festival-songs

www.dalurinn.is/en/page/video

In Iceland, last weekend of July or on the first weekend of August, Icelanders have their annual shopkeeper's holiday, named Verslunarmannahelgi. The most known as well as the biggest one is Þjóðhátíð, located in Westman Islands, an island outside the mainland with the capacity of around 4200 people.

At Þjóðhátið people get together in one purpose; to have fun and enjoy life over the weekend. It is very important that you had some sleep before entering the island since sleep is only possible occasionally as you will be busy attending this 24/7 party over the weekend as well as the camping place is located at the heart of the action.

Although some people look at this festival as a music one, some even say that the music doesn't matter; it's all about the atmosphere. There are three highlights during the weekend, beginning with the unbelievable bonfire at the Friday evening, followed up by an incredible firework exhibition on the Saturday night. Finally, the last but not the least, the Sunday sing-along event with Árni Johnsen, one of Westman island´s famous persons, who gathers people to sit in the hillside and sing along with him as he goes through Icelandic folk songs. As midnight approaches, the atmosphere rises to something indescribable and hits its peak when the valley lightens up in visual highlights, which is an eruption of red torches, representing the island's volcano flames.

One can not describe the festival without mentioning the people of Westman Islands. You would expect the residents to be less than tolerant when the massive invasion begins but the truth is that you will discover people one of their kind. Hospitality such as theirs can not be found anywhere else in the world. As the locals have their own white "house" tents in the middle of the valley, all in white, guests are invited for their so-called private parties inside of them where the residents will welcome you gladly with smoked puffin or homemade brownies swallowed down with something appropriated. Remember not to be afraid to ask for more, they are very lavish.

Þjóðhátíð is for each and every one of us as long as we are looking for the greatest party ever, and luckily for us Icelanders, that happens annually in Westman Islands.

Four days after the wreck.

We were hit by an 'alleged dui' driver resulting in multiple soft tissue injuries, a rotator cuff tear and a SLAP tear for me, Paul's eyelid being sliced by our car hood coming through the window (I could easily have been widowed at 47), and me being knocked out: concussion or mild TIB / MTBI. I have no memory of the actual wreck. We were transported to the local trauma center, Harborview Hospital. I have a permanent softball-size bruise-appearing discoloration on my right calf due to a (medic's records) softball-size hematoma. People stare at it a lot. I've been branded by someone's choice to drink and drive.

A site specific drawing made directly on the walls of the gallery.

The drawing itself (made with the use of a spirograph, the 1960's

art making device for children) contains thousands of various small

circles representing "The Cosmic Dancer", an ancient image of the

divine dating back to prehistoric times in India. The drawing was

completed in three days.

Nataraja

By Anu Kumar

Nataraja, "The Cosmic Dancer" is an ancient image of the divine dating back to prehistoric times in India. The earliest figurines are cast in stone and found amidst the ruins of the Indus Valley civilization (circa 4000-2800 C.E.) Later representations are cast in either bronze or iron and to be found in southern india from the time of the Chola Dynasty (800-1100 A.D.) The most famous of these is installed in the Siva temple at Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu where for centuries it has inspired the imagination and fervent devotion of pilgrims from all over India.

The image is deceptively simple at first glance. It reveals a sure-footed dancer-figure firmly holding down a crouched demon while the other is half-raised in a balancing pose. Four arms reach out expressively - the one on the left holds up a lighted torch from which issue burning flames that form a majestic aureole or a halo of fire around the figure, at once illuminating and encircling it. The right arm holds up a drum, the flying tassels of which indicate a rhythmic song in progress. The lower left hand is held up with palm out in a symbolic gesture, or "mudra", indicating and exhorting fearlessness. The lower right hand reaches gracefully across a lithe torso pointing down towards the delicate foot that is raised in movement. Here rest and salvation are assured to those seeking sincerely. The figure is androgynous with a dangling earring on the left side. Adorned with snakes as armlets, it holds the crescent moon like a jewel-clasp in the hair which is other-wise aflight in all directions in the frenzied ecstasy of dance.

Seen in the mystic imagination of poets from long ago, The Nataraja is a profound vision of the Absolute. This god is by no means aloof or hidden apart from creation in some transfixed realm. Rather He is supremely alive to a present moment in time that is charged with an extraordinary power and bliss. He is utterly joyful and unconstrained. The mystery of such joy lies in a paradox: to be alive is to die each moment and create anew. The Cosmic Dancer has an unstinting capacity to endure his own death and to leap forth into an unknown place where He will be emptied of every familar position or posession, claim or identity - indeed, of life itself. Through such a complete reversal and sacrafice, then, the Dancer attains a new life in an open ground that is now illuminated by the fires of self-knowledge and a triumphant self-awareness. This is the prize, the deepest mystery of His joy. The Nataraja is in complete union- is unity itself as living truth of action.

The sense of unity is expressed through a fine sensitivity to balance by the Cosmic Dancer. Rising above fear and ignorance, this deity knows that movement is an expansion from the limited into the unlimited, of matter into spirit, because He understands balance. Opposites abide in Him rather than exsisiting without: death and creation, lightness and dark, joy and pain, are but complementary poles to be conjoined through harmony and poise. The central axis of the Dancer's body is like a spinal column that knows an exquisite connection to all space and holds it together. Then the entire panorama of the world becomes a play or "lila"- a game, a dance, a spontaneous outflow of energy. The sacred is everywhere and in every step.

Constructing the World: Art and Economy 1919-1939 and 2008-2018

10/12/18 to 02/03/19

Ten years after the peak of the global financial crisis in 2008, which profoundly shook the economic systems of America and Europe and had a lasting effect on present-day life, this topical exhibition is the first to illustrate the economy’s dramatic influence on art and to make global comparisons, demonstrating these in an analysis of two separate eras. Economic phenomena in the classical modernism of the 1920s and 30s are not only explored by focusing on art from the German Weimar Republic, the Soviet Union, and the United States, but also juxtaposed with artists of the present day.

Curatorial team: Dr. Eckhart Gillen (Berlin), Dr. Ulrike Lorenz, Dr. Sebastian Baden

Project Lead: Dr. Inge Herold, Assistence: Lisa Valentina Riedel, M. A. mult., Elisabeth Bohnet, M.A.

How does contemporary art reflect the world of work today? The catalogue for the second part of the exhibition Constructing the World at the Kunsthalle Mannheim takes a look at this question. The focus of it is primarily on artistic positions of the past decade that deal with the social, political, and economic effects of the most recent economic crisis after 2008. The works address and interrogate new production conditions and developments on the labor market as well as political conflicts. The accompanying publication provides fascinating insights into the diverse artistic positions.

www.cadillacforums.com/forums/classic-cadillac-forum/8854...

It's HOT out! But that doesn't mean you should have to break a sweat in your Cadillac. I invested some time into making that a reality once again for this car.

This car was "retrofitted" to R134a in 2004. From the time that I owned it, performance was forgivable until the outside temperature got into the mid 80s and above, or parking in the sun for an extended period of time. Basically it exhibited all of the flaws of a converted car. When it was really hot out, the AC was a bad joke, especially when driving slowly. After exhausting everything else, the only choice was to go back to R12.

I had never done any real AC work besides the occasional charge with a can until the air coming out "felt good." I wanted to have an AC shop do everything, but no one in my area does anything with R12 anymore. I was definitely nervous, as, despite it sucking, the 134 system didn't leak at all. I found that it really wasn't that bad, and I would do it again if I had to.

This is what everything looked like before I started. The compressor was changed in 1991...R4's are not known to live that long so it was definitely going to be replaced. I bought an ancient but new Harrison 200 on Ebay some years ago in preparation for this. Here it is getting ready oiled and ready to spin for the first time in decades! Hopefully it will hold up.

At some point the evaporator core was replaced, evidenced by the black goop sealing the box. I wasn't sure of it's condition so I was going to replace it too (it wan't in bad shape and was probably a waste to anyone who might be considering undertaking something like this). I'm glad I did it because the way the box was sealed really wasn't the best and was probably sacrificing some efficiency. I didn't take any pictures of the box itself, but the sealant that was used was a nightmare to remove completely. This was really the worst part of the job, as whoever did it last must have bought stock in the sealant company. Even the drain was filled full of the stuff

So I'm not sure how exactly it was draining before (it did drain though, no standing condensate) There is a bolt that holds the bottom of the HVAC box to the firewall, just about where the passenger's left foot would rest that goes behind the carpet, through to the engine bay. This bolt was missing, and the box was surprisingly...you guessed it, glued to the firewall with about a 1/2 tube of sealant! I was able to find a nut and bolt that was appropriate to hold the box as it was designed to. While I was behind the carpet, I also noticed this.

This rubber plug has 3 vacuum lines running through it. Mine was loose, so much so that if one shined a light at the firewall from under the hood it would come through the car. It was a bitch to get a grasp on and seat back into position. I had no idea that it was there, much less that it was loose and causing an air leak into the car right by one of the manifold-to-Y pipes. I only mention this because I told my buddy about it who owns a 1985 car and his was just kinda dangling there like mine was. Worth looking at if you own a car of this era. I had to use two pair of tiny needlenose to put enough power on it to pop it back in.

There was nothing really wrong with the lines or condenser, so they would be flushed out, 134a-dapters removed, mineral oiled and put back into service. At an HVAC pro's recommendation, I used RX11 AC flush. Nasty stuff, but did a great job. It is really important to get the 134a oil out of the system, along with any garbage that may have accumulated over the years. My job was made easier by tons of green dye that was in the system.

The orifice tube is supposed to collect physical contaminants. They really shouldn't be that dirty, provided you're not working with a car that had a blown compressor. No idea how old this tube was, but it was not bad.

Once I had the system flushed, I put everything back together using one of those AC o-ring kits. My mechanic checked it for leaks, and then vacuumed it down. Finally I was ready to charge! I was excited, and regrettably forgot to take pictures of the process (I even bought a gauge set). Anyway, the only one more excited than me was the car!

Can you see the cold?

Vent temps are in the mid 40's around town, NYC. Figure 90 +/- 5 and very humid. On the highway, I've seen as low as 37, but no lower. Of note, these measurements were taken from the center vents using a digital temp sensor, not a vent thermometer. Regardless, of the vent temp, the car itself is actually cool inside which is something I remember about R12 that even newer cars that have much more consistent performance seem to lack. Ice coming out of the vents, but you have to be in the airflow to actually be cool. Not so anymore. I'm so pleased with this, and kinda shocked that it worked! To anyone contemplating AC work, I recommend watching this guy's videos, especially this one

It helped me out a lot (read: gave me confidence to tear into an air conditioning system) I'll be back with an unrelated update sometime soon, and I don't mean 3 months soon like last time!

Auburn Red Drag Wig. The lovely Julienne!

The largest Gnostica playfield we've ever seen -- 3X as high and 2X as wide as the initial board. This game took about 2.5 hours! (Four-player games take forever, especially if everyone fights each other for the initial 9 territories, as opposed to striking out and creating new territory.)

Kevin & Ethan saw us playing Gnostica, and they pretty insistently wanted to play. Now it took us about 5 yrs to realize how to play the game correctly and learn our strategy. But tehse 7/10-year-olds pick up games really fast, and play advanced games like us, not the simple games most people play. They were even picking up on some of it just by watching me & Carolyn.

It's hard to see the color difference in this picture, but Clint is red, and Ethan is orange. (Kevin was yellow, and Carolyn was purple, as always.)

We taught them how, and then Ethan ended up winning! Carolyn stupidly called 9 prematurely (ignoring Clint's repeated and vehement warnings that her 9 points were not secure), and thus eliminated herself from the game first. Ethan and Kevin then ganged up on Clint, who built land to the west, then had the land connecting us destroyed, effectively exiling him on an island, until he managed to get back inland and at least claim The Devil, wreaking some (but not enough) havoc. In the end, Kevin didn't orient himself to face Ethan enough to move on his territory after he called 9, and neither did Clint, so Ethan's 9-point victory squeaked by, making him the youngest person to ever beat us in Gnostica.

¥1900/US$16.93 (plus a ¥300/US$2.65 cover charge for some reason, why is there a cover charge for a pizzeria??).

It's a decent pizza. The crust is a little too doughy and soft but the toppings are very fresh and properly seasoned.

I haven't had a decent pizza in literally over a year so I was happy.

Dreamer

BY PRIMUS ST. JOHN

1

There are few probabilities through

Which dreamers do not pass. . .

The first dream

Is the bright red dream

Of our mother’s heart.

It is her sacrifice

Of something eternal

In herself, for us.

The Arabs say

Blood has flowed

Let us begin again.

The heart is like a cup, or a coffer,

or a cave. It holds the image of the

sun within us. It is a center of illumination

and happiness and wisdom. To dream

of the heart is always to dream of

the importance of love. . .

The second dream is the inauguration

Of the soul. In this dream we are

Confronted by a host of birds. . .

Some were guileless

Like the doves,

Said Odo of Tusculum,

Cunning

Like the partridges.

Some came to the hand

Like the hawks.

Others fled from it

Like the hens,

Some enjoyed the company

Of people

Like swallows,

Others preferred solitude

Like the turtledoves,

But all eventually flew away.

“Living is not necessary, but navigation

is,” said Pompey the Great.

B. 1725, London

Mother devout as gunpowder

Seemingly clairvoyant

Taught her only child

To read by four

Arithmetic and Latin by six

Dies when he is seven.

I am dreaming

I am in the dark

And it is raining

And she is the rain.

To dream that you are in the dark

is a sign of difficulties ahead; if

you fall or hurt yourself you can expect

a change for the worse, but if you

succeed in groping to the light, that

is another matter. . .

Father, master of ships,

Lively in the Mediterranean trade,

Unusual qualities —

Educated in Spain, stern.

I listen to nothing

But the silence

Of my father; the dream

Says

He is the rudder

And the compass.

If, in your dreams, you see your

father and he speaks to you, it is

a sign of coming happiness. If he is

silent, or if he appears to be ill or

dead, then you may expect trouble. . .

Sent to sea at ten,

Acted like a verb in disagreement,

Of course

Bright,

But no eagle —

A mess.

I have vague

Dreams now

Of intelligent flowers.

I cannot say

If their roots

Are in the ground

Or in the air.

By seventeen

A wildflower

In the field of Jesus.

Pious, books, fasting,

Abstinence from meat,

A canon in his meditation

And silence,

But like the weeds

Loved to curse.

Flowers, one of nature’s best dreams.

This foretells great happiness, unless

you throw away the blossoms. . .

1742

A lot more flexible,

Falls in love,

Misses his ship,

A freethinker now,

Less of a thorn

In the side of God.

I dream that I

Am always with her,

A freckle on her wrist,

A flower in her hair,

A ridiculous flying fish —

Sliced

And dressed

And set on the table.

As I told you before,

He missed his ship,

Became a lover

Rather than a Jamaican

Planter,

Father as expected

Furious.

Love is a dream of contraries as far

as sweethearts are concerned. To dream

that you do not succeed in love is a

sign that you will marry and have

a happy life. To dream that you are in

the company of your lover is also fortunate. . .

Late 1743

Kidnapped into the Navy

(What else)

Coming from Mary’s house.

Taken from his own life,

Focused into new pieces.

I dream about my fortune,

A fragrance captured

In a jar,

A freckle without a wrist,

A wisp

Foxlike at the edge

Of the wind.

Fortune is a dream of contraries: the more

fortunate and successful you are in imagination,

the greater will be your real struggles. . .

How do we fit together

When we are not free?

What kind of animal are we?

How many heads do we have?

How many tails?

The sea

Is a strange piece of property

On which to discuss this,

On the hms Hardwick

One month later

Midshipman John Newton:

I have eaten war

Like a cluster

Of delicious fruit.

The ironic juices

Running from my lips

That was my dream.

The reality of war is the dream of it. Beware

of those things that appear so friendly

but have no reason. . .

1774

The Hardwick

Ordered to the East Indies.

First our hero visits Mary again.

(You’re wrong)

Almost misses ship,

Completely misses the point.

Given small boat of men

To go ashore at Plymouth,

Deserts.

My dreams here

Were father, compass,

Fog, leakage,

And ultimately, learning,

With us

Like our laundry.

We are always pulling from our past. Fossils

are the dream of the sickness of someone

you have not met for a long time. When

this happens brew herbs, add honey

and lemon, sip and inhale deeply. . .

Captured like a frog,

Returned, put in irons,

Stripped, flogged, degraded,

Returned to foremast.

This is that point many people would

call a black moment, an unfortunate

color on things. I will not do that. For

black is a contrary at funerals and our

hero has just died a little as we

all tend to from time to time. And even

though that is true I will not do

that either. I will not talk of the great

white moment of death, I will not talk

of the great blue and purple moments

in the prosperity of pain. I will not

talk of the great red or scarlet moments

of quarrels and loss of friends, or

the crimson pleasure of the unexpected,

the mental tints of yellow and orange

that show you should always expect

change, or the feeling of knowing green

because you have been on a long journey.

All the colors are conjurers when our

mysteries are being solved. And if this could

not be his dream then by now it should

be ours. . .

We are not holy

The wind says in the sails

As he works.

It has never been otherwise

Though we live in the most

Devout of stories like litmus paper

Constantly changing color

Just to prove something

Is happening.

The sadness in his dream is a good omen

for the future. It is a quest for lasting joy,

and so is punishment a dream of unexpected

pleasure. . .

Works quietly for weeks.

His silence

Darns a temperate

Healing thread

His eyes

Become an elaborate

Decorative art

Avoiding everyone.

“Every month,” said Cicero

“the moon contemplates

its trajectory

and the shrubs

and animals grow.”

He has done to himself

What is easy.

He must now blossom

Out of his new secrets

Even if joy is ephemeral.

Suddenly

He begins to sing,

Creates songs about fish

And clouds.

Fish are a dream of penetrative motion,

clouds are a dream of appearances always

in a state of change. . .

We must be patient

With the overfecundity

Of his youth.

We must let him

Climb and descend the mast

Like a weapon.

Trade him

To a slaver’s ship

To subdue the threat

To discipline

In his strangely awakening

Joy.

We must let him

Choose his monsters

And the myths

Of his own worth —

The enemy always being

The forces threatening

From within.

Paul said, “We wrestle not against flesh

and blood, but against principalities, against

powers, against the rulers of the darkness

of this world, against spiritual wickedness in

high places. . .”

Suddenly,

Begins to breathe

Different songs

In his six-months’ stay

Along the Sierra Leone coast.

Troublesome songs,

Songs of quick wit

And devastating rhymes

Ridiculing ship’s officers,

Crew loves them,

Becomes a choir.

To dream that you hear other people

singing shows that the difficulties

that will come for you will come through

your dealings with other people. . .

The irate mate

Assuming command

After the death of the captain

Threatens

To put Newton

On a man-o’-war.

The Royal Navy is not an obstacle dream;

it is an elaborate exhibition of the

nuances of living death. . .

Occupation: slave dealer

Place: Sierra Leone

On one of the Plantanes

Features: Short, white male

Name: Clow

Other information: Black wife

Name: sounds like P.I.

John Newton

Bargains his life

Into this extravagant story.

He will become a slave

Because P.I. will hate him.

He will become ill

With fever.

He will be denied

Food,

Denied water,

Tormented by Black slaves

On command,

Put to work

On a lime tree plantation

Enjoying only the scents

And dreaming

Of his earthly desires,

Will master the six books

Of Euclid,

Drawing the diagrams

With a long stick

In the wet sand.

Six is, like two, a particularly ambiguous

number to dream about, but it

establishes equilibrium. It unifies

the triangles of fire and water and

symbolizes the human soul. Six is

the hermaphrodite, a personality integrated

despite its duality.

If this is a story

Of the reasoning of slavery,

Where are we?

What have we been doing

To people,

To the light

From which life emanates?

Slavery is a story

Of procreation,

Of magic religious thinking,

Of the androgynous divinity

Within us.

No story can be this happy

Unless it is married

To something deeply within us.

It is not them

Who have done it to us,

Or us

Who have done it to them.

It is the antagonistic dream

Of unreconciled love.

To dream of erotic love is to dream of

the desire to die in the object of desire, to

dissolve in that which is already

dissolved. The Book of Baruch says erotic

desire and its satisfaction is the key

to the origin of the world. Disappointment

in love and the revenge which follows

in its wake are the roots of all the evil

and selfishness in the world. The whole

of history is the work of love.

“The character of the image,” said Shukrâchârya,

“is determined by the relationship between

the worshipper and the worshipped.”

On the beach,

He eats the fruit

Of his own way;

He fills himself

With his own devices;

He continues to draw

In the sand.

Each grain

Is a small,

Precise form

Of salvation

That has occurred,

A god come to earth

In another form,

A private,

Innate sacrifice.

Providence does not tire.

We are ready to go on

With the story.

It has come to this:

When his father dreams

He only sees

The broad face

Of sadness,

The soft grassland

Where only asphodels grow,

And the idea of water

Expanding into tears.

But to dream of sadness is a good

omen, a transportation of suffering to the

spiritual: this dream is like an herb,

a seasoning, a bitter root, medicinal,

something poisonous, but nevertheless

something that eventually withers away.

When you

Come on to squally weather,

When the wind

Is about SW,

When

You sway up the yard

Fix the trysail,

Put people to making

Sennit and swab,

Ask for my son.

Ask the Lamb,

The Beverly, the Golden Lyon,

Ask Job Lewis,

Have you seen my boy?

Have you seen my boy?

One thousand years before Christ, Solomon

said that the way of a ship in the midst

of the sea was too wonderful for him

to understand.

Meanwhile,

Clow: shamed

Into freeing his fellow

White man.

After all

They share the same hair,

The same instinctual life,

The same irrational power.

There is no victim here:

This is a story of love’s

Sadness,

Of the spirit of love’s ferocity

And savage insensibility,

And the name of Jesus

Turned in hymns,

Spewed into the fringes

Of the forest,

Spewed on the deep blue sea.

What dream is this, is that what you said?

My God, this is the dream of the dragon,

the fabulous animal, the amalgam of

aggression, the serpent, the crocodile, the

lion, what we like to think is the

antediluvian nature of love.

John is free now.

John is free to slave,

Free to be reluctant,

To give up profit

and return home.

Ask the master of the Greyhound.

Have you seen my boy?

Have you seen my boy?

To find money in your dream is not fortunate

at all. There will be some sudden advancement

or success, but it will prove

disappointing. Reader, remember this

statement by Virgil, “It will be pleasant

to remember these things hereafter.”

You cannot blame

The sea on a woman.

Unlike the seasons

It has no ribs

Though

It has a crown,

Wears a sheath,

Swings a sickle,

Adores the sun,

And is known

As bareheaded and leafless.

The sea is the emblem

Of the great capricious world;

The naked image of flux

Vibrating between life and death.

There is a dream called “Dire is the tossing

deep the groans; come let us heel, list

and stoop.” And when John heard this

on his way home, it was as if he

had read 2 Kings 10:16, “Come with me

[brother] and see my zeal for the lord.”

For twelve months

The Greyhound

Sought gold,

Ivory, dyer’s wood,

Beeswax,

And Newton sought the Lord.

The way of a ship in the midst of the sea

is too wonderful to understand.

Youth is not innocence.

It is not a militant puzzlement.

It is a methodological initiation

Into the ubiquitous life

Of sin.

For a life without sin

Is no life at all.

And so he wanders on

Like Paul,

So very Christian about it,

At once wretched and delivered.

Thinking with his mind

He is serving God,

But with his flesh

The law of sin.

Call out John Newton.

Call out

To Joshua, Ruth,

Samuel, Obadiah,

Esther, Zechariah,

Luke and Timothy.

The world

Is a masterfully round

Secret

That embraces everything,

And it is time

To reach into the horizon,

Now.

It is time to choose

Your ship,

And the triangle of your life

Upon the salty sea.

As you can see, dreams are without reason,

without solution, without proof, the

unedited version of our love, our aspiration,

our hurt. . . Call out John Newton. Call out. . .

Back home

Offered captaincy of ship.

Refuses.

Sails as first mate

On the Brownlow.

Collects slaves.

Takes them to South Carolina.

He begins to dream of questions: “What

was the mode used in stowing the slaves

in their apartments?”

Returns home,

Marries Mary Cattlett,

Assumes first command,

The Duke of Argyle,

140 tons burthen.

Marriage is the dream of sulfur and

mercury. Some believe it is a most fortunate

omen, a volatile conciliation, a fragile

union. They are right. It is one of the great

uncharted seas of individuation. It is

said, “If you are separated from your

opposite you consume yourself away. . .”

Dead reckoning

Magnetical Amplitude     W° 25.30N°

True Amplitude     W° 6.30°

Variation     19° in Western

Lattitude per Account     50° 48m

One-third of the slaves will die

In middle passage

Some say fifty million

Started the trip

Some say fifteen.

The dream of questions is a bright necklace

with two ornaments on it: liberty and

love, not truth.

“At noon some small rain. . .

Had an indifferent observation. . .”

“We take the two men-boys

For some shallop rigging,

We do not take

The two fallen-breasted women. . .”

“Dear Mary,

     Today, saw

     My quondam Black

     Mistress P.I. —

     I believe

     I made her sorry

     For her former ill

     Treatment of me.”

The trouble with atonement is it is like

a sphinx, several parts human, several

parts bull, dog, lion, dragon, or bird.

When we are dreaming of atonement, no

matter how subtly, we must remember

we are not dreaming of a verb.

“I watch them work

The tie, tackle,

And lower lift.

The boatswain

Speaks to Bredson

About the score

In one of the strops.

Thomas Creed

Sits with his splicing fids;

Tucks the strands

Of the tack cringle.

His fingers are either

Little mystics or snakes.”

When you dream the dream of square-sail

rigging you are dreaming the dream

that the same side is always before

the wind. At the dawn of Swedish history

it was believed Erik Vädderhatt, the

King of the Svear, could turn the wind

and cruise endlessly. Ships are supposed

to be emblems of transcendental joy. . .

“Do the male slaves

Ever dance

Under these circumstances?”

“After every meal

They are made to jump

In their irons;

But I cannot call it dancing.”

“What is the term

That is usually given to it?”

“It is by the slave dealers

Called dancing.”

“Unclewed the sails.

They too in their shackles

Danced in the wind.”

“Dear Mary,

     I watched the land wind

     Do to the sails

     What it does

      To our hair.

     I dreamed of dancing

     With you

     Into the cold water,

     Our wet clothes

     Like nets and entanglements

     Around our desire.”

They would call them up

Two by two, equivocal,

Unmasked,

Making it possible

To be classified

Forever:

Pairs of birds,

Pairs of oxen,

Pairs of sheep,

Reptiles, lions,

Elephants, antediluvian,

Carnivorous, herbivorous,

Fabulous, beautiful,

Ugly, strange,

Cocks, locusts, bears,

Foxes, and even flies,

All of them black;

All of them in colonnade

To the gates of hell.

John did baptize

In the wilderness,

Did call out to Judæa

And Jerusalem

Come lay down

Your life

In the River Jordan,

Participate in his death

And his resurrection.

They said

They were refreshing them,

But the shackles still clanged,

And most of them still stank,

And many finding holes

In the netting

Jumped overboard

And baptized themselves

Bobbing in the adoring

Loins of the sea.

“Dear Mary,

     The three greatest blessings

Of which human nature is capable

     Are undoubtedly religion,

     Liberty and love.”

The shape of a ship’s hull is determined by

the materials, methods of construction,

means of propulsion, use, fashion, and

whim. This is a dream of law and

the minute verities of justice, the eighth

enigma of the tarot.

First part fair,

The latter cloudy,

Winds becoming unusual,

Clouds dark, great lightning. . .

I think of what we’ve done,

My own illumination

Before it is too late:

The palm and needle whippings,

The short splice,

Blackwall hitches,

Sheet bends.

Quickly rummage

The rigging details,

The yardarm blocks,

The tackles.

Recall work

On the pintles,

The rudder head.

Have Billinge

Check barricado and stores,

Especially powder and slaves.

On this day

Of the second voyage

Of The African, 1754,

Weighed,

Bound by God’s permission

To St. Christophers,

We are ready for our justice,

To be winnowed like barley

On the threshing floor.

The great dream of the dark, with the

lonely extroverted lamp, the intuitive ship,

and the wind tossing on the innovative sea

should moor somewhere. “Why is this

so?” asked Kuo Hsi. For in our landscapes

and our seascapes are the personalized items

of our consciousness, the coarse grist

of our imagination, the flirtatious metaphors

stirring our ethics, and the boldly stroked

delineations of our unraveling possibilities

and original nature.

Through the night

We were played with

Like kittens.

The slaves spilled

Out nightmares of themselves

And groans.

We will all

Need dawn’s shawl

This morning.

I hope

She is good to us.

Osiris was slain by Set and put

together again by Isis. John will dream

like this, off and on, and then quit the

sea. This is his last voyage. He will

lose no slaves and no crew, and it will

be called a blessing. At a time like

this the Egyptians would build a

monolith to marry the enigmatic tension

between life and death. John will

change his dreams, now, from the menstrual

dreams of the slaver to the menthol dreams

of the minister. Showing the devastating evil

we do, like a storm, is only a stepping-

stone to something else.

Sing brother.

I will become sermons,

He says,

That understand what I’ve done.

Sing

I will become hymns

Bound in the skin

Of what I’ve done.

I will be patient with Cowper,

Inspiring to Wilberforce

     And Wordsworth;

I will attract the awakened crowds,

The abolitionist.

I will stand at the altar.

Sing brother

Dressed in black,

Testifying,

Testifying. . .

I dream I will not be forgiving him

for the timeliness of his innocence, for

betrothing the dead to the dead,

but will be lifting

up my hands to an appetite for life

that will take slavers and slaves with me.

I wish

There was no timelessness,

That slavery was over

And so far away

It was an incredibly mysterious

Jungle —

Somewhere else.

An uncharted river

Canopied by extensive moss —

Somewhere else.

A spectacular ragged

Waterfall

Mystically expressed

Over an enormous

Obsidian wall,

But it is right here

In my pouch, today,

Like the acori beads

I have been swimming with

For hours —

Presidential, prime ministerial,

Corporate, grassroots based.

right here,

Racist, imperial, and sexist.

right here,

Woefully spendthrift

And Democratic,

Anally retentive

And Republican,

Militantly inappropriate,

And so good to itself

That it jogs.

Primus St. John's poems often wed personal to public and quotidian to historical. He is as well known for his love poems as for his long poems, notably the epic poem “Dreamer,” written in the voices of the slaves and the captain aboard a slave ship. He has said that he tries “to be as comfortable with anger as [he is] with tenderness,” and this is evidenced by his nuanced handling of the human proclivity for contradiction as well as self-improvement.

Sacred Hunger

For those interested in the history of the slave trade, Barry Unsworth's Sacred Hunger is an excellent and well-researched fictional accounting of the fate of one slaving ship, its owner and the many lives on board.

"Unsworth illuminates the barbaric cruelty of slavery, as well as the subtler habits of politics and character that it creates." (Publisher's Weekly)
