Designated as a National Important Cultural Property on August 29, 1910

Hokoku Shrine is dedicated to the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi (one of the three unifiers of Japan in the 16th century) and his loyal aid Kato Kiyomasa. The reason for building this structure is clearly stated in a letter by Ankokuji Ekei, head monk of Ankokuji Temple. In 1587, Ekei asked Daiganji Temple, the temple in charge of construction and repair work in Miyajima including Itsukushima Shrine, to build a Buddhist library in which the chanting of Senbu-kyo sutras could be held every month. As there is no board ceiling or outer gate, it is believed that the construction of the building was not completed.

Originally, Amida Buddha and two subordinate Buddhist saints, Anan and Kasho-sonja, were enshrined in the Buddhist altar until the early Meiji era. Since that time, however, the altar has been used in Shinto rituals.

The building is called Senjokaku (Hall of One Thousand Tatami Mats), reflecting its standing as the largest structure on Miyajima Island. The shrine was a popular landmark in Miyajima where many people came to relax and cool themselves and to buy popular souvenirs such as tooth picks, and a variety of legends and traditions have been created here.

The fact that this structure, unique among the buildings belonging to Itsukushima Shrine, is unpainted and that its exact date of founding is recorded makes it a valuable gauge of the passage of time. The traces of weathering on its pillars and floor boards can be used to determine the approximate age of any other wooden structure on Miyajima.

A piece of wood used as a measuring device in the reconstruction work of the O-Torii in 1873 hangs on a pillar under the floor of the south part of the shrine. Countless votive picture tablets that had been hanging on the walls of Itsukushima Shrine buildings until the mid Meiji era decorate the walls inside the hall.

The shrine did not yet exist at the time of the Battle of Itsukushima in 1555 when the Mori clan defeated the Sue clan to unify the Chugoku region. The headquarters of the Sue clan was located on this hill, which was then called To-no-oka (Pagoda Hill). Starting in the Meiji era, the hill was developed through the establishment of stone steps, among other additions.

Excerpt from www.japan-experience.com/all-about-japan/miyajima/temples...:

Its bare appearance may not intrigue you at first. Only unfinished walls and a hundred pillars. Although the building is pretty, there is something missing. But once inside, look up: the gigantic ceiling is covered with a mosaic of paintings whose subjects are as varied as the styles and periods of implementation. Medieval battles, Buddhist representations, landscapes and animals in a modern style, the eye does not know where to turn.

Taking advantage of Hong Kong’s entrepot status, its geographic location at the doorway to mainland China, and the close connections of Tung Wah Hospital’s board members with overseas organisations and global business network, the coffin home was able to provide a repatriation service for those deceased abroad by providing a temporary depository at the coffin home, from where the deceased could then be returned to their birth place for burial. This service eventually allowed the coffin home became the centre of a global charity hub during the last century.

Tung Wah Coffin Home now consists two halls, 72 rooms, gateways, pavilion and gardens built in different periods.

The Story Behind The Cherry Blossom Festival In Bound Brook Park In Newark, New Jersey By Mark Di Ionno | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

www.nj.com/news/2016/03/the_story_behind_branch_brook_par...

The explosion of pink buds and their floral scent bombs are just days away at Essex County's Branch Brook Park.

The cherry blossom trees will flower over a period of three weeks - 5,000 in all, in 18 different varieties - in hues from snow white to vibrant pink.

The annual Branch Brook Cherry Blossom Festival is a yearly celebration of spring, but it began 40 years ago as testament to hope and renewal.

It was 1976 - less than a decade after the 1967 riots - when one particular Newarker wanted to restore a little piece of beauty from her childhood and bring some happy pink back to the worn and weary park.

She is Kathleen P. Galop, who grew up in the North Ward and Forest Hill, and became a corporate lawyer for Prudential and a historic preservation expert.

"Kathleen Galop started the Cherry Blossom Festival," said Dan Salvante, Essex County's parks and recreation director. "She made it happen."

"I don't like to tie everything to 1967," Galop said. "But I thought celebrating the blossoms would be something positive. It would give the city a sense of renewal."

There were fewer than a 1,000 trees then, but the census now stands at 5,000. Since taking office in 2002, Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo has been determined to have Branch Brook overtake Washington, D.C., as the cherry blossom tree capital of the nation, and it has.

MORE: Recent Mark Di Ionno columns

The often-repeated assertion that the 360-acre park has more cherry blossom trees than Washington, D.C., appears to be true; the official site website of the National Cherry Blossom Festival says there are 3,750 trees in the Tidal Basin area, where 700,000 people come to see the blooms each spring.

"To me, it's all about quality life, civic pride and economic development," DiVincenzo said. "We get 100,000 people for our Cherry Blossom Festival. They come here, they eat in restaurants, they spend money."

Like Galop, DiVincenzo grew up with a love of the park and the trees.

"We didn't go on vacations," DiVincenzo said. "Vacation was in Branch Brook Park. We'd take pictures by the cherry trees."

But the cherry blossom trees weren't always part of the Branch Book Park allure. They weren't even included in the original Olmsted plan.

Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of American landscape design, favored open meadows and clusters of natural forest, not ornamental trees. His sons followed that vision when they were commissioned to design the Essex County park in 1900.

The result rivaled their father's greatest creations - Central Park in Manhattan, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and other magnificent urban landscapes from Mount Royal Park in Montreal to the U.S. Capitol grounds in Washington.

It was Caroline Bamberger Fuld - yes, that Bamberger - who introduced the cherry blossom trees to Branch Brook Park in the 1920s. During a trip to Japan, she became enamored with the beauty of the robust, flowering trees. When she returned home, she donated more than 2,000 to the park.

Bamberger, who started the department store chain with her brother Louis, "wanted Newark to have more cherry blossom trees than Washington," said Galop, who wrote the labor-intensive applications for the park to be placed on the national and state historic registries. "I think Washington had 2,000 so she ordered 2,001."

Bamberger brought in so many trees, the park had to be extended north of Heller Parkway into Belleville. The Branch Brook Park Cherry Blossom Visitors Center is Newark in this northern part of the park.

"The trees are generally short-lived, with a life expectancy of 40 years, but we still have some from the original collection," said Paul Cowie, the arborist who manages the Branch Brook cherry blossom tree collection.

Those trees, which Cowie called "monsters," are the thick-trunked, wide-wingspan varieties in the northern part of the park near the visitors center.

Two years after DiVincenzo took office, he ordered an official count of the Branch Brook cherry blossom collection. The number was surprisingly low.

"When we finished the inventory, there were only 987 trees left," said Cowie. "That spurred the restoration of the population."

With the help of the Branch Brook Alliance, a park "friends group" of corporate and private donors, the county was able to go on a cherry blossom tree-buying spree. The latest phase was a $651,000 expenditure for 1,100 trees last year.

"This is the seventh phase of the plantings," Cowie said last week as a crew put in a fresh delivery of 100 trees, to replace some of the 1,100 that didn't thrive.

DiVincenzo said the magic of the Branch Brook park collection is not just in the number but in the variety.

"We have more varieties than anybody," he said.

Eighteen, to be exact, said Cowie.

They range from the early-blooming Okame, which are popping their bright pink buds now, to the late-blooming Kwanzan, which burst big, dark pink double flowers.

The park has abundant white blossoms of the Snow Goose variety, and many weeping trees called Higans, which are most popular with tourists, because the branches arc and cascade to the ground.

Perhaps the best part, though, is the trees have not disrupted the original Olmsted design. They decorate the park, not overpower it.

"I think what's been done there is in keeping with the parks natural setting and beauty," Galop said.

The Branch Brook Park Cherry Blossom Visitors Center is in Newark in this northern part of the park.

Perhaps the best part, though, is the trees have not disrupted the original Olmsted design. They decorate the park, not overpower it.

"I think what's been done there is in keeping with the parks natural setting and beauty," Galop said.

Located in Hong Kong’s North District and right next to Shenzhen’s Yantian District, Sha Tau Kok was designated as part of the Frontier Closed Area in 1951. Since then, Sha Tau Kok has been accessible only to individuals with a closed area permit. Back in the days when Sha Tau Kok was closed to non-residents, visiting the border town also required a guarantee from a local resident. As it begins to open gradually, Sha Tau Kok has become a great choice for weekend getaways.

The first phase of the opening of Sha Tau Kok began in June 2022, followed by the second phase starting January 2024. Visitors can board a kaito ferry to explore Sha Tau Kok and enjoy the area’s beautiful scenery, unique attractions and local delicacies, either independently or through local tours. You can also take a ferry to nearby islands and areas, such as Lai Chi Wo, Kat O, Ap Chau and Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark.

The opening of Sha Tau Kok

Art in station architecture

Artwork Title:

Horizon in Time

Artist Name:

Kingsley Ng (Hong Kong)

Location:

Kai Tak Station

Artwork Completion Date:

February 2020

Concept:

Whether as the former airport, the new cruise terminal or a railway station, Kai Tak is always a point of departure for travel. The journeys that begin or end here are loaded with fascination, sentiments and memories: the amazement of reaching up to the sky for the first time, the vast vista at the open sea, the mixed feelings about migration, the lively pulse of everyday commuting. Horizon in Time invites passengers to contemplate these moving moments when they step into the train station. A sculptural interpretation of the old runway, in direct proportions and aligned to the orientations of the former airport runway, floats above the entrance. Across the flipboard-like structure, an array of iridescent colours changes tones when commuters look from different vantage points. As the sun glides across its daily path, the sculpture’s shadow shifts like a sundial. At night, sparks of light are projected onto the surroundings, like a constellation rising after dark. The theme of transitoriness is carried through in imagery inside the station. At the platforms, watermark traces of old photographs bring back ephemeral vignettes at Kai Tak when the historical airport first opened. Like memories, the faint images await to be rediscovered. Along the subway, ports connecting to Hong Kong’s migratory history come together in a topological panorama. Viewed from a consistent altitude of 35,000 feet, all traces of human habitation—and the impulses driving each journey—fade away. A joint horizon stretches across borders in timelessness.

...to let the fear of getting hurt stop me from pursuing what makes me happy.
