Craters of the Moon and the Wairakei Geothermal Field are part of what is known as the Taupo Volcanic Zone. the zone stretches as far south as Tongariro National Park and as far north as White Island off the coast of Bay of Plenty. It is a region of active volcanoes and geothermal activity; an area that reminds us New Zealand is a young country balanced on top of two ever-moving sections of the earth's crust - the Pacific and Indo Australian plates.

Death Valley is generally sunny, dry, and clear throughout the year. The winters, November through March, are mild with occasional winter storms, but summers are extremely hot and dry.
On the first of April 1917 the western basin of the Echo Crater violently erupted, completely destroying an accommodation house located in front of the side. The deepened and enlarged crater quickly accumulated water and formed what is now known as the Frying Lake. The lake covers 38000 square meters, being the world largest hot spring, with an average depth of six meters. The average lake temperature is about 55 degrees. The lake is highly acidic as well, with a pH of about 3.5, while the carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide gas bubbling up gives the appearance of boiling. In fact in vents on the lake bed real boiling is occurring, but the body of the lake is somewhat cooler because of evaporation, convection and radiation of its heat.
The central AC unit for the upstairs of my house is out - unfortunately, that is where my home office and computer are located. Yesterday when I got home from work the temperature was 99 degrees up here. Until I can get a day off work to meet the AC repairman, I will be visiting Flickr very infrequently and for short bursts of time only. I'll be downstairs where it's cool if anyone needs me...

I just jumped on my old computer (which was inadvertently left on) to find this image sitting in the flickr uploader. Thought maybe it was destined to go up. :-)
It was 3000 degrees that day. I really felt for those guys in their black tuxes... Never heard a complaint from them though. It was a truly fun wedding. Especially after the sun went down. Here the groom is listening to the reverend as she shares with us all the meaning behind the sand ceremony.
