The Dingle plays host to numerous bits of re-used stone, salvaged from buildings about the town. The fountain acts as a centre point with the stone terracing retaining the steep sides of the former quarry. Whilst The Quarry walks were laid out by Henry Jenks in 1719, an attorney of Shrewsbury, the actual quarry, now known as The Dingle, was first landscaped in 1879, at the same time the bandstand was erected and the statue of Hercules placed here. Prior to 1879 the quarry was used for such purposes as bear and bull baiting, cock fighting and wrestling according to A. Hare in his book Shropshire, dated 1898.
