The Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest Region hosted a public field tour at the Wind River Experimental Forest, located within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in Washington state. This tour highlighted old-growth trees, the unique characteristics of old-growth forests, and information about the Forest Service’s National Old Growth Amendment.
The Wind River Experimental Forest's old-growth stands, primarily composed of Douglas-fir and western hemlock, are living testaments to the ancient and intricate ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest. Some trees here have stood for over 400 years, surrounded by a diverse understory of shrubs like salal and huckleberries, and ground plants such as trillium and beargrass. These forests are vital sanctuaries for wildlife, including the federally threatened Northern spotted owl.
Since the early 1900s, these venerable woods have been pivotal in forest ecology research, guiding sustainable management practices. With over 80% of the region's remaining old growth on federal land, policies like the 1994 Northwest Forest Plan, its upcoming amendment, and the Forest Service’s National Old Growth Amendment underscore the importance of protecting these irreplaceable habitats.

Virginia National Guard Soldiers compete during the state’s annual small arms combat marksmanship match, hosted by the 183rd Regiment, Regional Training Institute, May 19-21, 2023, at Fort Barfoot, Virginia. Nearly 90 shooters participated in the event and competed as both individuals and as teams of four. The event required competitors to shoot with both rifle and pistol from a variety of firing positions and distances. The competition's final event was a three-gun match where teams of four traverse a course of three firing stations consisting of pistol, rifle and shotgun.
