UNOPS hosted a high-level panel session at The New York Times Climate Hub, on the sidelines of the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow.
The session – ‘Tacking the climate crisis: what role for infrastructure?’ – brought together a distinguished panel of leaders and experts from around the world.
“Losses for Africa are immense. We lose 7 to 15 billion [dollars] a year right now because of climate change. If that doesn’t change in terms of having adaptation, that’s going to grow to roughly 50 billion [dollars] by 2040,” said Dr. Adesina.

Speakers included Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Associate Administrator RDML Michael Schmoyer, Ph.D., Texas Animal Health Commission Executive Director Bud Dinges, Texas Parks and Wildlife Director of the Wildlife Division Alan Cane, USDA Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics (REE) and Chief Scientist Dr Scott Hutchins, and USDA Senior Advisor for New World Screwworm Preparedness John Bellinger. Joining them is the Knipling-Bushland U.S. Livestock Insects Research Laboratory Director Dr. Kim Lohmeyer.
Today U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins announced President Donald J. Trump has appointed John Bellinger as the new Senior Advisor for New World Screwworm Preparedness. In this role, Bellinger will integrate into USDA’s team to help further drive its robust effort to explore all available technologies to combat the New World Screwworm.
With the advent of New World Screwworm cases discovered in the U.S., the Agriculture Department and its partners are in full response to contain and eradicate this threat to livestock, wildlife, and pets in detected areas - efforts that include communication of USDA's NWS Response Playbook and education of such to the public. Rod Bain provides details of the Playbook and response on the ground level in this edition of "Agriculture USA".
The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) opened the Knipling-Bushland U.S. Livestock Insects Research Laboratory, a state-of-the-art laboratory facility today that will provide the U.S. cattle industry with innovative tools and advanced technologies to manage and eliminate the invasive fly and tick pests that threaten the U.S. cattle industry.
The new 52,000‑square‑foot laboratory features cutting‑edge laboratory spaces, advanced cattle facilities, and a state‑of‑the‑art genomics core to drive research that delivers innovative control technologies for the U.S. livestock industry. Other on-site research opportunities will involve improved surveillance and trapping tools, novel insecticides and acaricides, enhanced pesticide delivery techniques for cattle and wildlife, sustainable treatments to prevent and mitigate outbreaks of invasive/quarantine arthropod species, improved approaches to combat pesticide resistance, and insect genomics to identify pest vulnerabilities.
The facility also houses two ARS research units: the Livestock Arthropod Pest Research Unit and the Veterinary Pest Genetics Research Unit. Collectively, these units improve the health, sustainability, and profitability of U.S. livestock production and protect the U.S food supply from devastating arthropod pests, including biting flies, ticks, and the New World Screwworm. On-site research also plays a role in critical research to eradicate other ticks and blood feeding flies that can harm, infect, and kill cattle.

Presented in partnership with London Ontario Media arts Association and McIntosh Gallery, MEDIATIONS II is the second iteration in LOMAA’s Summer.17 artist talk series, which brings artists on the forefront of media art and activism to the Forest City. With a line-up of provocative contemporary practitioners, each event hosts 2 artists to present on their practice and research.
For the second event in the series, LOMAA and McIntosh Gallery will present London-based artists Jamelie Hassan and Rehab Nazzal. This coincides with Nazzal’s exhibition Choreographies of Resistance currently on view at McIntosh Gallery.

McIntosh Gallery at Western University is pleased to present a PhD. thesis exhibition by activist artist Rehab Nazzal. The show is based on Nazzal’s year-long field research in the occupied West Bank and features an array of works that engage gallery-goers through sight, hearing and smell. In this multi-media exhibition, social commentary and critique intersect with expressive response to the severe realities in the conflict zone, and offers a space where critical inquiry as well as reflection may take place.
Nazzal is a Palestinian-born artist whose works have been widely shown throughout Canada and internationally. “As an artist whose life is shaped by the violence of Israel’s military occupation, it’s my responsibility to provide an alternative representative record of the daily struggles of the Palestinians. I am hoping this show will fill a void in contemporary art and address visually and sonically the Palestinians’ experiences of resisting colonial violence,” she said.
The exhibition, entitled Choreographies of Resistance, includes photographs, video, and sound works that focus on the Palestinian struggle against settler-colonialism in one of the world’s most volatile hotspots, Nazzal notes. It includes a video installation seen through the “eyes” of a gas-mask, and an installation in which photographic images are projected onto hundreds of handmade slingshots as it pays tribute to Palestinians who have lost their lives in what the artist notes is an "intifada, or uprising."

....of Golden Daffodils! I spotted this bed of Daffodils as I drove home from work last night and thought I might get a decent picture. So when I nipped out for some milk today I grabbed a couple of shots. It puts me in mind of my Crocus Focus shot and of my Poppy field shots last Spring. The bed was only 8 feet long but with my 75-300mm lens I can throw things out of focus and make it seem like a field full of flowers, I was lucky with the light! Have a lovely weekend, Flickr friends - I'll be working for the next few days and probably not posting!

1st MSC hosts mobilization readiness exercise
Camp Santiago, Salinas: Soldiers of the 1st Mission Support Command's Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment hosted a mobilization readiness exercise at Camp Santiago, P.R., 14-27 March.
During the event, HHD Soldiers completed readiness checks for over 1,000 Soldiers. Events such as this are commonly held annually to ensure that commanders can maintain their unit readiness.
"We try to do this as the units get closer to their available year in order to have them improve their overall readiness and mobilization posture in the event they get selected (for mobilization) down the road", said Gerardo Rodriguez, mobilization officer for the 1st MSC.
Rodriguez said MRXs help units maintain readiness for deployments but they also serve the individual Soldier.
"As part of the MRX ... there are different stations and one of them, one of the most important, is medical. A Soldier is completely checked and whatever cannot be fixed at this location ... the Soldier can go to a private (medical) provider and get that situation fixed and that helps them with their overall readiness",he said.
Soldiers rotate through eleven different stations in total where they are checked in by HHD Soldiers and efficiently move through the station. While the process has been refined over the years at times people still tend to get impatient.
Staff Sgt. Anaselly Ramos, logistics noncommissioned officer with the mobilization team, know the experience can be stressful but to help keep the level of frustration down she leads groups of Soldiers through stations when she sees openings. While each group of Soldiers is instructed to follow the schedule given to them for the MRX, Ramos' method keeps things moving along too.
Keeping track of the entire flow of Soldier traffic is a system called the mobilization plan data viewer.
"It shows all the stations and actually it runs the SRP (MRX) completely", said Spc. Hector Rodriguez, from Bayamon.
"It's tracking each Soldier by station ... you can see how many have completed (the stations) and how many have not",added Rodriguez, who is assigned to the 311th Quartermaster Company.
While the process can be tedious for the Soldiers going from station to station, one Soldier working at the medical readiness station found the MRX to be an opportunity to challenge herself by practicing her public speaking skills.
Spc. Jenniffer Gonzalez Diaz, a traffic management coordinator, who's primary language is Spanish, began giving the medical station briefings to many groups of Soldiers. Gonzalez admits that speaking English is not one of her strengths but her determination brought her recognition among her peers and even the Commanding General of the 1st MSC Brig. Gen. Fernando Fernandez.
"They gave me the opportunity to participate in this activity so I can ... help them in the system with the Soldiers, and I practiced a lot my English",said Gonzalez.
As a member of the the 390th Seaport Company, in Ceiba, Gonzalez recognizes the importance of refining her English language skills. When given the opportunity to refine her abilities when she signed up for the Army, Gonzalez participated in English language courses.
"I improved my English, I practiced my English when I took the class but I knew a little bit of the language because we are Puerto Rico and we are bilingual so we took classes when we started in (grade) school", said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez knows this isn't the only challenge she'll have to overcome in her military career, which is why she stays motivated and maintains a positive attitude.
"The important thing for me is to show people that you are trying, don't get upset, don't get mad if someone corrects you because they are helping you",she said. "If you don't know, ask, so you can learn ... the stuff you learn nobody can take away."
