"James Madison’s Montpelier hosted the dedication of the first and only commissioned statue of James and Dolley Madison on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, on the back lawn of the Madison home in Orange. The dedication of the life-sized sculpture, commissioned by Robert H. Smith, included remarks by Michael C. Quinn, president of The Montpelier Foundation and Ivan Schwartz, the creator and sculptor of the statue and founder and director of StudioEIS.
The statue depicts an intimate and touching portrait of the relationship between the Father of the Constitution and the woman who initially defined the role of First Lady.
They are portrayed as they would have been together at their Montpelier home. James Madison is seated in the back lawn reading a book, as he often did, pointing out a particularly interesting passage to his wife.
Dolley, her hand resting on James’ shoulder, involved and supportive, looks as if she just returned from a stroll in the garden. The statue evokes the words of a visitor to the famed couple, 'They look like Adam and Eve in Paradise'.
Ivan Schwartz and StudioEIS went to extraordinary measures to make sure the statue was authentic to the period, and reflective of James’ and Dolley’s relationship, from the posing of the figures to the shoes and clothing, to the clasp on Dolley’s necklace.
Before beginning the full-scale sculpture, the studio undertook extensive historical research. Then, they photographed individuals in various poses to determine the positions of the figures. Next, they used computer modeling and master sculptors to produce a full-scale clay model that was used to cast the finished bronze statue.
Robert H. Smith, who generously commissioned the statue for Montpelier, has also commissioned similar works of art for other historic properties."

As a college preparatory school, The Sagemont School skillfully prepares its students for college or university. One of the ways it does this is by hosting its annual College Fair. Representatives from 97 colleges and universities attended this year’s event, providing students with the chance to speak one-on-one with the admissions departments of some of the finest academic institutions in the country including American University, Emerson College, George Washington University, Purdue University, Rutgers University, Vanderbilt University and the University of Miami.
“The goal of the College Fair is to expose our students to the many options available to them after Sagemont,” explains Mellesia Nelson, College Counselor for The Sagemont School. “We want our students to be knowledgeable and prepared when it is time for them to narrow their choices for the future.”
This year’s program included representatives from public and private universities, liberal arts schools, and research oriented universities. There were small, medium and large schools in attendance, as well as those from urban and college communities.
The variety of schools represented really impressed tenth grader Maria Moncaliano. “There were some top-notch universities there. There were universities for science, others for arts, and others for general education.”
She liked that the College Fair gave her the opportunity to speak directly to representatives from each university and inquire about their programs. “I had never really considered the University of Chicago,” shares Maria. “Now that I have obtained more information about it, I think that it could be a good match for me.”
To help students when speaking to the college admission representatives, Sagemont provided a questionnaire covering topics ranging from admissions requirements and financial aid opportunities to housing options and student life. For instance, students were encouraged to inquire about the average class size and accessibility of professors, as well as whether graduate students would be teaching their courses. Some of the sample questions were issues that students may not otherwise thought of to discuss, such as what it’s like on campus on the weekends and how roommates are selected.
Armed with their talking points, students were encouraged to visit the various colleges and universities and explore their opportunities.
High school sophomore Lizbeth Herrera says the College Fair certainly got her thinking. “It motivated me to start thinking about my future and the steps I need to take academically to confirm a good future.”
At Sagemont, the College Counseling department works closely with teachers to make sure students are prepared for college. According to Ms. Nelson, “Our college program serves as a partnership with the teachers to continue to encourage strong academic standing with our students due to the many doors that will open because of this.”
Sagemont also stresses to its students the importance of being well rounded. This means not simply joining clubs or seeking good grades for the sake of college, but truly gaining a sense of satisfaction. “When college representatives are on campus they also emphasize this to the students,” notes Ms. Nelson. “Colleges are looking for individuals how have had a well-rounded experience in high school and will bring this same drive to their school.”
To further prepare students for the transition from high school to higher education, Sagemont takes its tenth grade class on a fieldtrip to the University of Miami each year. “Our students have the opportunity to experience life on a college campus for a day,” explains Ms. Nelson. “Students are able to visit the dorm rooms, see a classroom, ask questions, and very importantly have lunch among the student body and enjoy the daily activities to experience the social atmosphere.”
In addition, the school encourages families to make college visits part of their family vacation. Ms. Nelson notes, “It is really never too early to start and this is something the entire family can enjoy and have discussions about.”

This is a photograph is from a set of photographs from the Castlepollard 5KM Road Race and Fun Run 2017, also known as the Tullynally Challenge, which was held in Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 16th August 2017 at 20:00. The race is hosted by North Westmeath Athletic Club. The weather was reasonably good for road racing. The participants had a very stiff breeze in their faces on the outward stretch and all the way to the 2KM mark within Tullynally. This then became a helpful tailwail for the final KM of the race.
Starting off many years ago the race was very much a local affair drawing runners from the sounding areas of Mullingar, North East Meath, Cavan, and Longford. However, the race has grown in stature and popularity over the years and is now one of the most well attended road races in the midlands and sees participants from all over Ireland. The race offers prizes in all categories. The Castlepollard 5KM Road Race attempts to support young runners and walkers by organising a range of underage races around the town square before the adult race at 20:00. Profits from the race go towards grassroots athletics in the region - North Westmeath Athletics, Schools Cross Country, and local community games. As summer moves into autumn the Castlepollard 5KM can be considered as the unofficial ending of summer evening road racing in the midlands as with the fading light of the late summer evenings comes less opportunities to hold races in the evening time. Castlepollard is a small town located in North County Westmeath amongst the lakes of Lough Lene and Lough Derravagh. One of the show pieces of the race landscape is Tullynally Castle which provides almost 2.5KM of the race route. The name Tullynally is an adaption of 'Tulaigh an Eallaigh' – the Hill of the Swan. The hill overlooks the mythical Lough Derravaragh. Irish folklore legend names the lake as where the Children of Lir, who were turned into swans, were destined to live for 300 years. Tullynally Castle is still a family home to this day.
One of the enduring symbols of the Castlepollard 5KM is the tireless work of Andy MacEoin of North Westmeath AC who has been a visitor to almost every road race in the Midlands and beyond over the past number of months to publicize the event. Many of the participants tonight will have seen Andy's strategically placed advertising signs around other road race routes. Certainly this work, and that of many other members of North Westmeath AC, has paid off well.
The race begins near the center of the town square and proceeds directly out the R395 towards Coole and Edgeworthstown. The first KM is flat and quick allowing the field to spread out. The race then enters the Tullynally Castle estate and proceeds up the tree-lined avenue. The gardens, like the castle are on a grand scale, taking in nearly 12 acres. This allows the race to make a big loop of the gardens with a quick downhill stretch followed by a sharp climb before the race rejoins it's outgoing path for the final 1.5KM of the race. The final 1100M from the gate of the Castle grounds to the finish is as the first - fast and flat and allows for a great finish passing the GAA grounds with finish line just outside the local Fire Station.
This year almost 400 took part in the race. It goes without saying that the Castlepollard 5KM has become one of the "must do" road race events in the midlands. Everything that is good about club road racing in Ireland can be found here.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. USAG-Humphreys hosted a taping of Shoot-Dori, a Korean variety show featuring a group of kids training and practicing their soccer skills here June 26.
During the taping of the show, a group Humphreys kids played a friendly match against the Shoot-Dori players. The day ended with some fun at Humphreys’ Splish and Splash water park.

Barong is a lion-like creature and character in the mythology of Bali, Indonesia. He is the king of the spirits, leader of the hosts of good, and enemy of Rangda, the demon queen and mother of all spirit guarders in the mythological traditions of Bali. The battle between Barong and Rangda is featured in Barong dance to represent the eternal battle between good and evil.
Barong animal mask dance, together with sanghyang dance are considered native Balinese dances, predating Hindu influences. The native Indonesians of Austronesian heritage often has similar mask dances that represent either ancestral or natural spirits; an example is Dayak's Hudoq dance. The term barong derives from the local term bahruang, which today corresponds to Indonesian word beruang which means "bear". It refers to a good spirit, that took the form of an animal as the guardian of forest.
In Balinese mythology, the good spirit is identified as Banas Pati Raja. Banas Pati Raja is the fourth "brother" or spirit child that accompanies a child throughout their life, which is a similar concept to guardian angels. Banas Pati Raja is the spirit which animates Barong. A protector spirit, he is often represented as a lion. The Barong is often portrayed accompanied by two monkeys.
Barong is portrayed as a lion with red head, covered in white thick fur, and wearing gilded jewelry adorned with pieces of mirrors. The shape of lion Barong is somewhat similar to a Pekingese dog. The origins of the Barong are far a back in time and quite uncertain. Its origins could be from animist worship, before Hinduism appeared, when villagers still believed in the supernatural protective power of animals.
CALON ARANG
On the other hand, Rangda is Barong's opposite. While Barong represents good, Rangda represents evil. Rangda is known as a demon queen, the incarnation of Calon Arang, the legendary witch that wreaked havoc in ancient Java during the reign of Airlangga in the 10th century. It is said that Calon Arang was a widow, powerful in black magic, who often damaged farmer's crops and caused disease to come. She had a girl, named Ratna Manggali, who, though beautiful, could not get a husband because people were afraid of her mother. Because of the difficulties faced by her daughter, Calon Arang was angry and she intended to take revenge by kidnapping a young girl. She brought the girl to a temple to be sacrificed to the goddess Durga. The next day, a great flood engulfed the village and many people died. Disease also appeared.
King Airlangga, who had heard of this matter, then asked for his advisor, Empu Bharada, to deal with this problem. Empu Bharada then sent his disciple, Empu Bahula, to be married to Ratna. Both were married with a huge feast that lasted seven days and seven nights, and the situation returned to normal. Calon Arang had a book that contained magic incantations. One day, this book was found by Empu Bahula, who turned it over to Empu Bharada. As soon as Calon Arang knew that the book had been stolen, she became angry and decided to fight Empu Bharada. Without the help of Durga, Calon Arang was defeated. Since she was defeated, the village was safe from the threat of Calon Arang's black magic.
RANGDA
Another version holds that Rangda was actually linked to historical queen Mahendradatta or Gunapriyadharmapatni, a Javanese princess sister of Dharmawangsa of East Javanese Isyana Dynasty of late Medang Kingdom period. She was the queen consort of Balinese king Udayana and Airlangga's own mother. Mahendradatta is known for her devotion to the worship of Durga in Bali. The story goes that Mahendradatta, the mother of Airlangga, was condemned by Airlangga's father because she practiced black magic. After she became a widow (Rangda in old Javanese means: 'widow'), hurt and humiliated, she sought revenge upon her ex-husband's court and whole of his kingdom. She summoned all the evil spirits in the jungle, the leyaks and the demons that caused plague and death in the kingdom. Airlangga face his own mother to save the kingdom. A fight occurred, but she and her black magic troops were so powerful that Airlangga had to ask for the help of spirit king, Barong in order to defeat her. Barong came with Airlangga's soldiers, and the fight ensued. Rangda cast a spell that made Airlangga soldiers all want to kill themselves, pointing their poisoned keris into their own stomachs and chests. In response, Barong cast a spell which caused the soldiers body's to be resistant to the sharp keris. At the end, Barong won, and Rangda ran away.
BARONG DANCE
The lion is the popular one, as it comes from the Gianyar region, where Ubud (the home of tourist's Balinese dance ritual viewing) is located. Within the calon arang, the dance drama in which the Barong appears, the barong responds to Rangda's use of magic to control and kill her to restore balance. In traditional Barong dance performances, he is portrayed in his struggles against Rangda, it is the popular part of Balinese culture. The mythical creature would dance along the street to the calon arang dance. A priest would throw holy water at it.
- The dance opens with two playful monkeys teasing Barong in a peaceful environment.
- The next scene is popularly known as "Keris Dance". The Rangda character appears and wreaks havoc. She casts black magic upon male dancers, who represent Airlangga's soldiers, and orders them to commit suicide. In a trance, these men stab themselves on their chest with their own kris. Meanwhile, Barong and the priest cast protective magic on these men, which makes them invulnerable to sharp objects.
- The dance ends with the final battle between Barong and Rangda, concluding with the victory of Barong over Rangda. Rangda runs away, the evil is defeated, and the celestial order is restored.
The lion barong is one of five traditional Barongs. In Bali each region of the island has its own protective spirit for its forests and lands. Each Barong for each region is modeled after a different animal. They are:
- Barong Ket: lion barong, the most common Barong, it is the symbol of a good spirit.
- Barong Landung: giant barong, the form is similar to Betawi Ondel-ondel
- Barong Celeng: boar barong
- Barong Macan: tiger barong
- Barong Naga: dragon (or serpent) barong

St. Mellion Golf Club's 2014 Ladies Captain's Day was hosted by this year's Lady Captain Sue Poole. A full entry with two and a half hours of tee times kept Sue extremely busy. And to keep all those golfers going Sue's husband Alan and daughters Amy & Alice were on hand to dish out free drinks and snacks at the Halfway House. A pleasant if breezy day created a stern test for the lady members. After freshening up the ladies enjoyed tea and cake in the St. Piran Suite followed by presentation of prizes. Well done Sue, a great day.

This is a photograph from the 6th annual running of the Meath Spring Half Marathon and 10KM Road Races and Fun Runs which were promoted and hosted by Bohermeen Athletic Club at Bohermeen, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 12th of March 2017 at 11:00. The half marathon consists of a 11KM and 10KM repeated loop around the roads of Bohermeen and Oristown. The 10KM race just completes the 2nd part of the half marathon. The finish line is on the running track within Bohermeen Community Center. The course is a fast fair course with a few small hills. Last year the course was 'reversed' which just meant that the traditional course changed to accomodate the large number of participants and the narrow country roads on which both the race participants and race traffic must both share before, during and after the race. Most runners agreed that this made the course much faster as a result. There was almost a total of 1,000 participants in both races.
The other great variable in road racing - the weather - was dry, clear but rather windy. At several parts of the course there was a stiff headwind which made these sections that bit more difficult. Temperatures were around a seasonal 10C for this time in March in Ireland.
Bohermeen AC is steeped in Irish athletics history since 1927 and it is this experience and exceptional community spirit and volunteering which has made this event today so successful. Having now organised the event for six years running it is certain that the event will continue to grow and expand become one of the mainstays on the Irish athletic club road racing calendar for many years to come.
This race takes place about one month after the Bewley's 10 Mile Road Race in Trim (just down the road from Bohermeen). Indeed these races truly kick-start the whole road racing season of fixtures amongst the clubs in Meath who are now famous for the quality and standard of the road races staged and organised.
The race is supported by substantial local sponsorship from businesses in the local area. McNally Logistics and Transportation are the main sponsors of this year's event. The company specialises in national and international haulage.

Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. ....of Golden Daffodils! I spotted this bed of Daffodils as I drove home from work last night and thought I might get a decent picture. So when I nipped out for some milk today I grabbed a couple of shots. It puts me in mind of my Crocus Focus shot and of my Poppy field shots last Spring. The bed was only 8 feet long but with my 75-300mm lens I can throw things out of focus and make it seem like a field full of flowers, I was lucky with the light! Have a lovely weekend, Flickr friends - I'll be working for the next few days and probably not posting!
Variety hosted a two-day winter session of Variety Adventure Camp at the Center of Clayton! Kids took on the Center's climbing wall, swam, sang, created masterful works of art and just horsed around! It was a great chance for campers to catch up with their best friends, including our awesome and dedicated counselors!

This is a photograph is from a set of photographs from the Castlepollard 5KM Road Race and Fun Run 2017, also known as the Tullynally Challenge, which was held in Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 16th August 2017 at 20:00. The race is hosted by North Westmeath Athletic Club. The weather was reasonably good for road racing. The participants had a very stiff breeze in their faces on the outward stretch and all the way to the 2KM mark within Tullynally. This then became a helpful tailwail for the final KM of the race.
Starting off many years ago the race was very much a local affair drawing runners from the sounding areas of Mullingar, North East Meath, Cavan, and Longford. However, the race has grown in stature and popularity over the years and is now one of the most well attended road races in the midlands and sees participants from all over Ireland. The race offers prizes in all categories. The Castlepollard 5KM Road Race attempts to support young runners and walkers by organising a range of underage races around the town square before the adult race at 20:00. Profits from the race go towards grassroots athletics in the region - North Westmeath Athletics, Schools Cross Country, and local community games. As summer moves into autumn the Castlepollard 5KM can be considered as the unofficial ending of summer evening road racing in the midlands as with the fading light of the late summer evenings comes less opportunities to hold races in the evening time. Castlepollard is a small town located in North County Westmeath amongst the lakes of Lough Lene and Lough Derravagh. One of the show pieces of the race landscape is Tullynally Castle which provides almost 2.5KM of the race route. The name Tullynally is an adaption of 'Tulaigh an Eallaigh' – the Hill of the Swan. The hill overlooks the mythical Lough Derravaragh. Irish folklore legend names the lake as where the Children of Lir, who were turned into swans, were destined to live for 300 years. Tullynally Castle is still a family home to this day.
One of the enduring symbols of the Castlepollard 5KM is the tireless work of Andy MacEoin of North Westmeath AC who has been a visitor to almost every road race in the Midlands and beyond over the past number of months to publicize the event. Many of the participants tonight will have seen Andy's strategically placed advertising signs around other road race routes. Certainly this work, and that of many other members of North Westmeath AC, has paid off well.
The race begins near the center of the town square and proceeds directly out the R395 towards Coole and Edgeworthstown. The first KM is flat and quick allowing the field to spread out. The race then enters the Tullynally Castle estate and proceeds up the tree-lined avenue. The gardens, like the castle are on a grand scale, taking in nearly 12 acres. This allows the race to make a big loop of the gardens with a quick downhill stretch followed by a sharp climb before the race rejoins it's outgoing path for the final 1.5KM of the race. The final 1100M from the gate of the Castle grounds to the finish is as the first - fast and flat and allows for a great finish passing the GAA grounds with finish line just outside the local Fire Station.
This year almost 400 took part in the race. It goes without saying that the Castlepollard 5KM has become one of the "must do" road race events in the midlands. Everything that is good about club road racing in Ireland can be found here.

Every year Tewkesbury hosts Europe’s largest medieval festival which includes the re-enactment of the battle. We attended on the Saturday in July 2011, with mixed weather but some very fine displays. The battle of Tewkesbury took place on May 4th 1471 between the royal houses of York, The White Rose, and Lancaster, The Red Rose. It started because Henry VI was considered insane and the country was without a strong leader. Edward of York, the most able leader left, was declared King in 1461. He had Henry locked in the tower of London and his wife Margaret of Anjou fled to France with their son also called Edward. When he reached 18 she decided to return to England and re-claim the throne for him. She landed at Weymouth on April 14, 1471, and set off for Wales, where Jasper Tudor awaited with re-enforcements for her army. Gathering supporters as they went, they headed for Gloucester to cross the Severn, only to find the city locked against them, by King Edward's orders. They headed for the next crossing point, Tewkesbury, but found that Edward's army was so close behind they had to stand and fight, rather than cross. Exhausted and outnumbered battle ensued but they were easily defeated, and so many of them were killed trying to get to the river that the field they ran through is still known today as Bloody Meadow. Margaret fled the scene with some of her ladies and was later found in a priory at Little Malvern. Prince Edward was killed either during the battle or just afterwards and he is interned in Tewkesbury Abbey. A brass plaque in the choir marks his last resting place, directly beneath a ceiling boss depicting the Yorkist badge.
