Nothing to take much during my business trip this time. :)

The above photo is the beach I visit during the trip to take some shots. The place is Surin Beach, Phuket, Thailand.

It is the favorite beach for the locals, who flock here on weekends and holidays to enjoy seafood and other freshly prepared meals in one of the beach restaurants. Unlike most Phuket beaches, Surin Beach has a steep sand shelf. Big waves are common on Surin beach during the monsoon season and can create dangerous undertow conditions. During the calm months, Surin's clear waters are good for snorkelling or kayaking. Boogie boarding and surfing are also popular activities.

Night view of the largest church in Iceland.

Big Stopper, sturdy tripod and gloves required. It was a windy July night after all.

"Hallgrímskirkja, church of Hallgrímur, is a Lutheran (Church of Iceland) parish church in Reykjavík, Iceland. At 73 metres, it is the largest church in Iceland and the sixth tallest architectural structure in Iceland.

State Architect Guðjón Samúelsson's design of the church was commissioned in 1937. He is said to have designed it to resemble the basalt lava flows of Iceland's landscape. It took 38 years to build the church. Construction work began in 1945 and ended in 1986, the landmark tower being completed long before the church's actual completion."

Every so often I get the urge to try something new, something that I haven't tried before, and most importantly, something that I don't feel is within my "zone of comfort". So off Tom & I went to Palm Beach for some sunset and nighttime shooting.

I wasn't too excited about the sunset image opportunities at this particular site, so we concentrated on what we would do when the nighttime arrived.

I was taking images of the Royal Park Bridge, which connects the towns of West Palm Beach and Palm Beach, as seen from a small park area just south of the bridge. I was fascinated by the reflections of the city lights on the Intracoastal waters below, with the streetlights shining in the background, along with a glimpse of the downtown buildings. I still felt that something was missing, so I found this bench which offers one the opportunity to sit and take in the view of this beautiful area and I decided to incorporate it into the shot.

I really think that, while I didn't feel too comfortable with this type of shooting, that it's important to stretch our "comfort zone" in life, whatever realm of our life that is. Tom & I often do what many people might think are "crazy things" (you know, adventure activities - nothing makes us feel more alive - not to mention the feeling of conquering our fears or limitations that we place upon ourselves). So from a photographic standpoint, this was my way of doing that. Not so scary after all.

Thanks so much for stopping by to view and especially for all of your comments, which are very much appreciated.

Commentary.

It is not always true that the best views are from the highest vantage points.

Too often, they are shrouded in cloud.

Indeed, it is fortunate to summit Ben Nevis on a clear day.

Also, a panorama in wide-angle is desirable in one sense,

but all scale and grandeur can be destroyed in a toy-town image.

On 25/07/2011, my birthday, I was lucky!

From dawn until dusk, over 18 hours, the sky was clear,

or only tinged, on the edge of the stratosphere, by Alto-Stratus clouds.

It took me a full 13 hours to ascend and descend “The Ben”

on its southern side from Glen Nevis car park.

It is an incessant 3-kilometre slope of 30-35° with a massive boulder field to negotiate in the last kilometre, just when you are at your most weary.

I only spent 20 minutes at the summit, so as to avoid any descent in semi-darkness.

Descents are notoriously more dangerous than ascents, particularly if darkness catches us out.

In addition, I was weighed down by a 30 kg. rucksack containing photographic equipment, food,

drinks, maps, first-aid kit and a whistle!

Also, time was taken to stop, rest, take refreshment, check bearings and of course, take photographs.

That must have added at least two hours to the adventure.

This image is from the rocky summit at nearly 4,500 feet.

One can see a glimpse of Loch Linnhe on the left, and the whole of Loch Eil, a sea-loch up to 50 miles inland from the open sea.

The mountains stretch from Loch Shiel and Glenfinnan to Knoydart, Glen Shiel and the Affric Mountains.

On the far left, on the horizon, are the graceful, undulating peaks of the Isle of Rum, 20 miles beyond the West Coast and 60 miles from “The Ben.”

Far right, on the horizon, is the ragged, serrated ridge of the Black Cuillin of Skye, and extreme right the more rounded granite hills of the Red Cuillin, both over 70 miles distant!

Dare I say, on exceptional days, when the light is right, it is possible to see landmarks in Ireland, over 120 miles away!

I could have happily spent two hours recording every mountain visible, but needs must.

After the descent I was the most exhausted I have ever been,

but so delighted to have seen what I had seen.

And……I have never enjoyed a pint so much as the one I had a bit later on!

Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) is the highest natural point in South Dakota, United States. It lies in the Black Elk Wilderness area, in southern Pennington County, in the Black Hills National Forest. The peak lies 3.7 mi west-southwest of Mount Rushmore. At 7,242 feet, it has been described by the Board on Geographical Names as the highest summit in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. Although part of the North American Cordillera (the Rocky Mountains in a broader sense) the Chisos Mountains of the Big Bend of Texas are far east of the continental divide and contain mountains higher than Black Elk peak and range from 14 to 16 (nautical) miles further east at 103°15′29″W. It is also known as Hiŋháŋ Káǧa (in Lakota). The U.S. Board on Geographic Names, which has jurisdiction in federal lands, officially changed the mountain's name from "Harney Peak" to "Black Elk Peak" on August 11, 2016, honoring Black Elk, the noted Lakota Sioux medicine man for whom the Wilderness Area is named. Professional but unofficial measurements in 2016 found the highest natural rock to be at 7,231.32 feet NAVD88 and the nearby secondary peak slightly lower at 7,229.41 feet.

The Dolomites are a mountain range located in northeastern Italy. Typical of the Dolomites are the steep cliffs and peaks created by erosion and weathering. They form a part of the Southern Alps. The Dolomites, also known as the Pale Mountains, take their name from the carbonate rock dolomite. In August 2009, the Dolomites were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Marmolada of 3343 meter high is the highest mountain of the Dolomites. On it's norther side there is flat glacier. The ridge is composed of several summits, decreasing in altitude from west to east. An aerial tramway goes to the top of Punta Rocca. During the ski season the Marmolada's main ski run is opened for skiers and snowboarders alike, making it possible to ski down into the valley. On the south wall of the Marmolada there are beautiful routes for mountaineers and many of them are also suitable for hiking.

Marmolada is a mountain in northeastern Italy and the highest mountain - 3342m, of the Dolomites, a section of the Alps. An aerial tramway goes to the top of Punta Rocca - The queen of the Dolomites.

Highest peak in North America

Here I am standing in a small section of the highest upper DeSoto Falls near the top of the waterfall. I was so elated to be standing here at this arrival point of my adventure. When flow conditions are higher, this entire area I'm standing in will be full of water. On this day, the photography conditions ranked low, ~too much sun, not enough water (today (only about 10%), too much summer growth, but regardless, I was happy. The creek-bed ascends in elevation up towards the crown, and when the visibility and flow conditions are favorable, there are numerous opportunities available to photograph longer perspectives of the waterfall. I would estimate the height being close to or equaling at least 200 + feet. It is similar to Alarka Falls in North Carolina, only the width here is about 5 times wider. I'll be looking forward to returning during late Winter in 2023. After I was ready to move on, I had two choices; 1) I could bushwhack back down to the bridge; or 2) I could scramble and climb the steep mountainside from this location at creek-side left up to where the main trail ends some 300 feet above. In the essence of time and energy, I decided to climb and scramble up the mountain to the trail.

Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest fresh-water lakes in the world, located in a high plateau area bordering Tibet, at an altitude of 17,100 ft (5,210 m), and remains frozen throughout the year. With clear blue skies in the backdrop and snow-white peaks fencing the lake boundaries the place appears truly divine, stunning and breathtaking!

The lake is considered one of the most sacred lakes by the Buddhist and Hindus. The lake is named after Guru Padmasambhava who had brought Tantric Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century.

Being located close to a sensitive border, access to the lake is closely monitored by the Indian Army. The area is open only to Indian citizens during morning hours. All tourists are expected to clear the lake by 11 AM.

Hohenschwangau Castle in the Allgäu Alps on an overcast and cold day in mid-April, Hohenschwangau, Swabia, Bavaria, Germany

Some background information:

This perspective makes Hohenschwangau Castle look like an isolated palace in beautiful mountain scenery. In fact, it isn’t, as Hohenschwangau and neighbouring Neuschwanstein Castle are definitely one of the highest attended visitor attractions throughout Germany. The tourist infrastructure around both castles leaves no touristic wishes to be desired and hence is well-prepared for the rush of visitors that arrives here every day. Well, compulsory visit made, but I for one definitely prefer the hidden gems.

Hohenschwangau Castle is a 19th-century palace in southern Germany. It is located in the village of Hohenschwangau near the town of Fuessen. Hence, it is situated in the Ostallgäu area in the Bavarian region of southern Swabia, directly bordering the Austrian state of Tyrol. The term Allgäu is applied to the northern part of the Alps and their foothills located in southwestern Bavaria.

Hohenschwangau Castle was the childhood residence of King Ludwig II of Bavaria (the so-called "Fairy Tale King"). It was designed by his father, King Maximilian II of Bavaria, in the first half of the 19th century. However, the castle is much older. It was first mentioned in 1397, though under the name of "Schwanstein", while the neighbouring castle on the spot of its successor building Neuschwanstein Castle, was named "Schwangau". Only in the 19th century, the names of both castles switched.

Hohenschwangau Castle (then Schwanstein Castle) was built on a hill above Lake Alpsee. Although its then owners, the Counts of Schwangau, had to sell their fief to the Dukes of Bavaria from the Wittelsbach dynasty at the beginning of the 16th century, they continued to occupy the stronghold. In 1521, they became owners of both Schwanstein and Schwangau Castle again. After the noble house of Schwangau had died out in 1536, the new owner Johann Paumgartner, a wealthy merchant from the city of Augsburg, had the castle reconstructed by the Italian architect Lucio di Spazzi. After Paumgartner had been ennobled, he even became Baron of Hohenschwangau.

In 1604, Hohenschwangau Castle entered into possession of Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria. The prince-electors from the House of Wittelsbach mainly used the residence for bear hunting and as a retreat for agnatic princes. In 1743, the castle was plundered by Austrian troops. In 1803, in the course of the German mediatization the county of Schwangau became officially a part of the Electorate of Bavaria.

King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria sold the castle in 1820, but only in 1832, his grandson Maximilian II of Bavaria, then crown prince, bought it back. In 1829, he had discovered the historic site during a walking tour and reacted enthusiastically to the beauty of the surrounding area. In February 1833, the reconstruction of the castle began, continuing until 1837, with additions up to 1855.

The architect in charge, Domenico Quaglio, was responsible for the neogothic style of the exterior design. More than 90 wall paintings represent the history of Schwangau, as well as medieval German romances such as Parzival and the story of Lohengrin, the Knight of the Swan, on which Richard Wagner later based his operas Lohengrin and Parsifal, sponsored by Ludwig II who had grown up with these stories at Hohenschwangau.

Hohenschwangau Castle was the official summer and hunting residence of Maximilian, his wife Marie of Prussia, and their two sons Ludwig (the later King Ludwig II of Bavaria) and Otto (the later King Otto I of Bavaria). The young princes spent many years of their adolescence here. Queen Marie who loved to hike in the mountains created an alpine garden with plants gathered from all over the alps. While the King and the Queen occupied the main building, the boys lived in the annex.

King Maximilian died in 1864 and his son Ludwig succeeded to the throne, moving into his father's room in the castle. As Ludwig never married, his mother Marie was able to continue living on her floor during the summer months. King Ludwig enjoyed living in Hohenschwangau, however mostly in the absence of his disliked mother, especially after 1869 when the building of his own castle, Neuschwanstein, began on the site of the ruinous Schwangau stronghold, high above his parent's castle.

After Ludwig's death in 1886, Queen Marie was the castle's only resident until she in turn died in 1889. Her brother-in-law, Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria, lived on the 3rd floor of the main building. He was responsible for the electrification in 1905 and the installation of an electric elevator. Luitpold died in 1912 and in the following year, the palace was opened to the public.

During World War I and World War II, the castle suffered no damage. In 1923, the Bavarian State Parliament recognised the right of the former royal family to reside in the castle. From 1933 to 1939, Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria and his family used the castle as their summer residence, and it continues to be a favourite residence of his successors. In May 1941, Prince Adalbert of Bavaria was purged from the military and withdrew to Hohenschwangau Castle, where he lived until the end of the war. Today, the palace is visited by more than 300,000 visitors from all over the world each year. Both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castle have really become a big business.
