Black-tailed dogs don't hibernate in Winter, making them a keystone species on the prairies of the Southern Plains. They provide winter sustenance to a variety of raptors and mammals. Their burrows offer brumation chambers to reptiles and Winter homes for Burrowing Owls that have migrated from the northern snow-covered prairies to Texas and Oklahoma.
It is obvious to those who visit the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge regularly that dog numbers are down. The biggest dog town on the refuge ( a parking lot was built there to observe them) is completely empty and numbers are visibly down in the other dog towns. This means less food for predators and more pressure on the prairie dogs as predator numbers increase in Winter. Rio Grande Turkey numbers seem to be down as well. Disturbing trends in the ancient Wichitas.
“If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern.”

Returning from an American Association of Private Rail Car Owners fall-color excursion in Vermont, two Northern Sky Charters cars and a former New York Central observation-lounge car, now named the 'Dagny Taggart', bring up the markers of Amtrak train 8, the westbound 'Empire Builder'. With the nationwide reduction in frequency of long-distance Amtrak trains, plus the continued impacts of COVID-19, these cars are going back to their owners, back into "hibernation" for the time being.
The lake was quiet. If there were any sounds the light breeze and occasional snow showers made them disappear. Only a flock of long-tailed tits flew past me on the way to roost.
Even the reeds were hibernating and I thought maybe the photographer should too.
Did some snowshoeing and winter camping at Mount Rainier, Washington last weekend with my buddy Michael Bollino. This place (as with any) looks quite different when you're standing on thirteen feet of snow! Several more new images from this trip to come. I'm also currently working on my first official processing video, which has been in high demand for a couple years. However, I'm relocating back to the northwest soon, so the release may have to wait until then.

Week 42/52
The Fall and the Winter are never easy on me. They're the time when everything always seems to go wrong, when I go down the drain, when I slide into bed and don't have the will to come out until it's warm outside, again. That's a little of what this shot is about.
The dark seasons, as I call them, are isolating. The rain keeps you inside, the cold makes you get into a thousand pieces of clothing and you feel stuffed, constrained. There's none of that freedom from the Summer. There's no hope, no reason to wait for anything. For me, it's excruciating.
I'm trying to turn it around, though. I'm trying to enjoy the Fall, I'm getting excited about my trip to England in December, I'm actually enjoying making pies and jams and sweets. I'm trying to fight it. But at the same time, I feel like I have to fight off my demons — and this is how I do it. It's just so I don't wake up in the middle of the night, my chest clad in that anxiety that makes me want to scream; it's just so I don't let the darkness get the best of me and run away with my thoughts and my smile; it's just so I don't succumb to the coldness outside. Because that's all I ask for the months to come: that they allow me to keep my head above the surface.

Everything is connected , and has a sense . Although this meaning is hidden from most , we know that we on Earth are our true mission close if we do is permeated by the power of enthusiasm .

A Respondek operation that has largely been dormant for over a decade has recently come back to life, making me wonder if the end times are near. I finally stumbled upon the crew of Illini Terminal (ITS) GP-9 1604 (built as CRI&P 1328 in 1959) working some hopper cars out of storage for interchange with BNSF at Litchfield, Illinois, a process that ended up taking several hours as they were mixed in with a dozen or more empty tank cars. This is perhaps the most interesting thing I've seen all year.
Now, if only I could catch the Vandalia Railroad in action...
