Winterized boats on the beach of Steinberg Lake in Upper Palatinate, Bavaria.
Happy Sunday everyone!! 🌞❄🌞❄🌞
The eastern garter snake has a wide range across eastern North America, as far north as southern Ontario and Quebec to the Gulf of Mexico in the south, along the eastern shores of America to the Mississippi River.
The eastern garter snake will live in a variety of environments, with a preference for grassy or shrubby fields, including abandoned farmland, outbuildings and trash dumps. In particular the snake likes to inhabit stone walls that separate the forest from fields. It is also found along moist habitats such as lakes, rivers, streams, swamps, bogs, ponds, drainage ditches, and quarries. Snakes are present in urban environments in habitats that include "city parks, cemeteries and suburban yards and gardens". Eastern garter snakes like to conceal themselves under logs, stones and other debris that allow them to bask in the sunlight and quickly seek refuge from predators.
Eastern garter snakes mostly eat toads, frogs, slugs, and worms, but they will eat almost anything they can overpower. The eastern garter snake is broadly considered non-venomous. (Wikipedia)

This snake was enjoying the sun in early spring. It was probably just recently out of hibernation and was looking for food and warmth. It watched me for a while as I struggled to get a photo with the wrong lens, and then finally left me to my own devices. I ended up with two good shots from this encounter.

2 days ago we finally had a sunny day (it looks like today too) and Miss Pistache (15 years old) came out of hibernation for a little walk in the garden. Here she is perched on a small roof.
Nature has undoubtedly mastered the art of winter gardening and even the most experienced gardener can learn from the unrestrained beauty around them.

A slightly dazed small tortoiseshell has just come out of hibernation and is enjoying the spring sun.
Now the heat has come and insects and plants are popping up and creating life after a cold winter and spring.
Another picture from my Grizzly encounter on Remembrance Day this past week in Kananaskis Country in Alberta. I guess he's just not ready for the big sleep yet.
Our most well-known amphibian, the common frog is a regular visitor to garden ponds across the country, where they feast on slugs and snails. In winter, they hibernate in pond mud or under log piles.
Length: 8-13cm
Weight: 22g
Average lifespan: 5-10
Common. Protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981
February to October
Common frogs are amphibians, breeding in ponds during the spring and spending much of the rest of the year feeding in woodland, gardens, hedgerows and tussocky grassland. They are familiar inhabitants of garden ponds, where they lay their eggs in big 'rafts' of spawn. They feed on a variety of invertebrates and even smaller
The common frog varies in colour enormously, from green to brown and even red or yellow. It has smooth skin, a dark 'mask' behind the eye and long back legs, covered in dark bands. It hops and jumps rather than walks, and lays spawn in large jelly-like clumps.
I have been hiding in my wee cave of an empty apartment pouring through book after book now that the semester has drawn to a close. Eat that, TV.

Cleo's Flickr friends already know that she hibernates in the basement, it's a habit she assumed years ago, probably because it's quiet and peaceful there and no other cats bother her. The camera doesn't bother her there either because it's too dark for photos. She rarely breaks this habit but today was apparently one of these days as she moved into a wicker basket cat cave in my bedroom instead. Cleo wasn't pleased when I found her and even less when I pointed the camera at her but you never know when you'll get another chance. I blamed her Flickr friends who want to see a photo of her occasionally. :)

This ice covered truck actually is not fitting to the kind of photos I'm usually post here. But is shows perfectly the conditions I have found here in North Sweden.
Dieser vereiste LKW passt eigentlich nicht unbedingt zu den Bildern, die ich normalerweise veröffentliche. Er zeigt jedoch perfekt die Bedingungen, die ich im Norden von Schweden vorgefunden habe.
Tofu sleeps more than usual now because the days are shorter and the weather is mostly cold and wet. It seems that he intends to immitate Cleo and hibernate although she wouldn't allow him to join her in the basement. :)
One of my favourite spots. Next to a little lake these boats are always there and make a good subject. More to come I am sure.
I am tired of you.
After two plus weeks of zero degree temps, it finally got above freezing. After work, I got Elsie out of her winter hibernation, and put her outside to get some fresh air. Stay warm. B.
