The ceiling of the Chapter Room at the Saint Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana is almost beyond description. I'm going to have to make a return trip because I utterly failed to capture this room the way I wanted to -- I even forgot to take a shot of the whole room. It was overwhelming. Mom and I both commented that we would never be able to concentrate on a meeting in this room -- there's just way too much to see!
The Chapter Room is where the Benedictine monks meet to conduct business, and it's a long room lined on both sides with Romanesque windows and dark wooden chairs. The walls and ceiling are completely covered in amazing murals painted in the 1940s by Brother Gregory de Wit, a Benedictine monk visiting from Belgium. The walls are covered in scenes from the Benedictine Rules and the ceiling depicts Creation. Does it ever!
This is the final ceiling panel, and I'm torn as to whether this is simply the choir of angels gathering before the throne to glorify God, or if this is a little bit more Revelations. There are exactly seven angels, and a couple of them look a little cross, which makes me wonder if they are playing a joyful noise on those trumpets, or if they are bringing down some walls... In any case, it's a dynamic way to end the ceiling murals!
Our dessert selection at Blue Heaven Restaurant in Key West. The Key Lime Pie here was on recommendation from quite a few people and it didn't disappoint. Very creamy and not very tart at all and just look at the meringue on top. Never had it with that before but it was really, really good. Bananas Heaven was pretty much just like Bananas Foster and was equally as good. It was a good way to end our trip indeed.
