Just some grasses - picked whilst watching my son play in a cricket tournament last weekend. Yes, it was that exciting.

The Grey-headed Gull is a predominantly coastal or estuarine species, but it is not pelagic and is rarely sen far from land. Interestingly, this particular bird was photographed in Pretoria, more than 400km (270mi) from the nearest ocean!

Yesterday afternoon I visited a local wetland with my son and I am posting 5 photos from that little outing.

This is the first yellow-headed blackbird I have seen this year. I saw and heard a few of them on Monday. I was glad to find this one in some beautiful light.

Out of Ecuador. This beautiful and amazing little hummingbird is appropriately named an Ecuadoran Hillstar and he is living in the high Andes Mountains above 14,000. In different lighting his head can show a sparkling light purple but this guy showed the pretty blue to me on this morning.

The orange-headed thrush (Geokichla citrina) is a bird in the thrush family.

It is common in well-wooded areas of the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Most populations are resident. The species shows a preference for shady damp areas, and like many Geokichla and Zoothera thrushes, can be quite secretive.[2]

The orange-headed thrush is omnivorous, eating a wide range of insects, earthworms and fruit. It nests in trees but does not form flocks.

The male of this small thrush has uniform grey upperparts, and an orange head and underparts. The females and young birds have browner upper parts.

Incoming Red-Headed Woodpecker :) Would have liked a quicker shutter speed but didn't have time to change it.

The best part of spending time in the backyard with my bird friends is earning their trust. Three times this afternoon I whistled up into the trees and one of our Brown-headed nuthatches flew right down - once only about eighteen inches (0.5m) from me.

They're spending a lot of time going back and forth to their nesting cavity in a tree in our yard. Normally if I whistle up to their nest a head pops out to see what I'm doing.

And THAT's why they're my favorite little backyard birds.

I got lucky with this snowy. Sitting on a fence post, Chinook sky in background, and nice light to go with it.

The performance of the Frecce Tricolori had two components. The first was like poetry, with the aircraft engaging in well-choreographed loops and fly-passes. The second component included heart-stopping, adrenaline-pumping moments like this. I am glad that I was able to nail this one to perfection.

Months past the blue glories of spring, the Bluebells have become seed heads, and the winds have scattered the tiny black seeds across the woodland floor. The last act sees the late summer sun shining through these paper like structures before they litter the ground.
