I finally was able to photograph my first red headed woodpecker while hiking up in the woods, love the sounds these beautiful birds make.
The red-headed woodpecker is a small or medium-sized woodpecker from temperate North America. Their breeding habitat is open country across southern Canada and the eastern-central United States
Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) is an incredibly striking bird: adults have brilliant crimson head, black back, large white wing patches, and white belly. These large patches of solid color are unlike other woodpeckers with more intricate patterns. Immatures have brownish heads.
Spring migration is FINALLY starting! Last weekend I went to a spot in Virginia hoping to photograph some early migrants. A gorgeous Blue-headed Vireo (Vireo solitarius) put on a nice show. The leaves had not quite come out yet, so I was able to isolate the vireo with a clean, unblemished background. It will be harder in the coming weeks to photograph the migrants due to the increasing foliage, but I am looking forward to the challenge!

After a decade I have Brown headed nuthatches visiting my place again. They zip in and grab one seed and fly up to a limb and crack it and eat it and then down quickly for another. Welcome back nuthatches. Labor on.
This critter--a Paper Wasp, I believe--was one of a large group that was attracted to something sticky that had been spilled on a railing. While the others went about their business, this one seemed to be checking me out. No wasps were harmed and no humans were stung during the making of this image, however. :-)
Wikipedia: The grey-headed woodpecker (Picus canus), also known as the grey-faced woodpecker, is a Eurasian member of the woodpecker family, Picidae. Along with the more commonly found European green woodpecker and the Iberian green woodpecker, it is one of three closely related sister species found in Europe. Its distribution stretches across large parts of the central and Eastern Palaearctic, all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

Yellow-headed blackbirds are not entirely uncommon west of the Cascades but they usually stay well clear of people. For whatever reason, on this day in late April, I was able to get close. A nice treat! Apparently this was an aberration as on several days since they stay at least 50 yards away.

A shot from. A few years ago after purchasing the reverse grad. The noise was unbelievable and the sunrise matched it…..Mother Nature at her best
Walked on the coast path today from Fowey to Par.....quite a hike !!! espescially as it was so hot. You get great views from the navigation mark on Gribbin Head. The main problems taking this image were harsh midday sun, and strong winds. I used a 10 stop Firecrest glass filter, and still only had an exposure time of 50 seconds at f16...... Have a great day.
Watching a group of greater flamingos could be really entertaining. I like it how their heads go up and down - especially when they stand close to each other it seems to be a kind of dance.

This is a two shot panorama looking across Wast Water in the Lake District to the mighty IllGill head that runs alongside the Lake.
Really ruggedly beautiful place and i just absolutely loved all the different colours and textures of the rock and the shadows from the trees as the late summer sun flowed across the surfaces :)
This ridge runs towards Scafell pike to the left, England's highest mountain. It looks very much like the wilds of Scotland around there
