Well today's workshop took place in the beautifully remote region of Chapel-le-Dale in which the iconic and magnificent Ribblehead Viaduct is located. This wonderful 142 year old railway viaduct was built in 1875 and was designed by engineer John Sydney Crossley. It took one thousand navvis to build it of which one hundred lost their lives during the five years it took to build it.

The Ribblehead Viaduct is 440 yards (400 m) long, and 104 feet (32 m) above the valley floor at its highest point. It is made up of twenty-four arches of 45 feet (14 m) span, with foundations 25 feet (7.6 m) deep. Every 6th pier is 50% thicker to mitigate against complete collapse should any pier fail. An amazing 1.5 million bricks were used in the construction and some of the limestone blocks weigh 8 tons each.

Today however, the weather turned seriously misty which proved to be challenging for those attending my workshop but we spent a good couple of hours wandering around while I offered advice on composition and settings. I personally love days like these as it allows the viaduct to truly shine without the surrounding fells claiming so glory for themselves.

HUGE thanks to Jayne, John, Darren, Dave, Ian, Mike, Seshi, and Stuart for their company. A really enjoyable day was had.

I fired off a very quick shot of Thornton Force whilst leading a workshop in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales in early January. It was fast approaching the end of the day and the light was fading. fast.

I love waterfalls and the natural s-curve of the river that flows from it made for an ideal composition.

Have a great Thursday evening everyone.

With the promise of perfect weather, I along with a couple of very good friends decided to venture out to Sheldrakes this lunchtime for high tide. Sheldrakes is a tricky place to shoot for those that have visited mainly due to the super slippery mud estuary that lies in wait for you should you try to get close enough to shoot the boats in the water and there can be a lot of distracting boats in the background wanting to spoil your perfect composition.

So after some time wandering around like a lost puppy, I eventually settled on this viewpoint. There were several elements to this composition that attracted me. The first being the forty-five degree angle that the main boat sits at and the pool of water that surrounds its base. I love the inclusion of the smaller boat in the background but just far enough apart from the main boat not to intrude.

The sky was magical today too, lots of summery pure blues with wonderful white fluffy clouds that floated by. The colour palette of the green grass, the subtle redness of the boats and the fantastic blue sky won me over. There's so much of this image I love.

What do you think? Do let me know, I would love to hear your views :D

The property now known as Tanglewood Park was part of land claimed by Sir Walter Raleigh for Queen Elizabeth on March 25, 1584. Among the earliest European settlers of the Yadkin River Valley was William Johnson, an immigrant from Wales. In 1757, just four years after the Moravian settlement of the Wachovia Tract in the nearby communities of Bethabara and Salem, Johnson purchased the mile square central portion of the present property from the Ellis family to whom the land was deeded in 1753 by Lord William Linville. The Ellis family leased the land for a short time "for five shillings lawful money of Great Britain in hand a yearly rent of one peppercorn payment at he Feast of Saint Michael, the archangel". After obtaining the property, Johnson built a fort overlooking the Yadkin River to protect his family and neighbors from attacks during the French and Indian War. Currently, this spot is marked by a monument just south of the Manor House. In 1765, he died and is now buried on the highest hill in the area called Mount Pleasant. In 1809 a simple frame church was erected next to his grave and remains today as one of the park’s architectural attractions. Although services are no longer held there, many people are united in marriage at the Mount Pleasant Church each year.

In 1859, James Johnson had the 18 room Manor House built on a hill in the center of the estate. The house was a gift of love to his daughter, Emily, for a wedding present. Two wings were added later.

The Johnson heirs sold their property in 1921 to William Neal Reynolds, brother of tobacco entrepreneur R. J. Reynolds. At that time the Tanglewood tract was enlarged to over 1,100 acres (4.5 km2) and the Manor House expanded to 28 rooms. Mr. Will, as he was called, raised and raced thoroughbred harness horses and established Tanglewood Farm as a home to some of the country’s finest pacers. In the Manor House, Mr. Will had a special room dedicated to his trophy’s, called the "Trophy Room." A fire that started mysteriously in a trophy room display case in 1980 did considerable damage, but the room has been restored. The room is surrounded by plaques and horse photographs. It is obvious that Mr. Will was a horse lover, and this tradition is carried on with Tanglewood Farm. Trail rides, hayrides, and carriage rides are available by reservation.

Today, the Manor House is a Bed & Breakfast Inn with 10 guest rooms, sweeping staircases, the Trophy Room, 20’s Room, and Rock Fireplace Room. These facilities are used for weddings, meetings, and overnight accommodations.

Mr. Will’s wife, Kate, a horticultural enthusiast, began the extensive native and ornamental plantings at Tanglewood and employed German master gardener, Mr. Frank Lustig, who continued her plans and his life’s work. He contributed the 800 bush Rose Garden on the Manor House lawn, the Arboretum behind the house, and the nearby Fragrance Garden to the estate. For 60 years, even after the death of his employers, and their gift of the estate, Lustig poured his talents into Tanglewood. He is buried in the graveyard at Tanglewood next to the historic church. The Reynolds couple had no children, and, as a gesture enabling others to benefit from the beauty, elegance, history, and recreation their country estate had to offer, in 1951, they willed the Tanglewood property to the citizens of Forsyth County to share as a public recreational park. Thus, Tanglewood Park was born. The facility is owned by Forsyth County. [wikipedia]

I was visiting the Facebook page of Meyer-Optik Görlitz and they gave me a brilliant idea. Thanks a lot!

(NOTE: Photograph taken with a Nikon Z 7 II camera and a Meyer Optik Görlitz Trioplan 100mm F2.8 II lens for Z mount, wide open, F2.8 on a Gitzo GK2542-F3W tripod. This lens does not have any pins for electronic communication with the camera, hence there is some missing metadata, since focus and aperture are controlled entirely manually.)

For catching take off Position ; It definitely required patience then experience and luck!...

PS - I used monopod...

In the summer months ladybirds give off a faint scent, which is thought to deter potential predators. In the winter this 'ladybird perfume' could be one of the ways they find each other at hibernation sites. Ladybirds hibernate through the winter as adult insects, so this is the time when they start looking for suitable sites. Different species will usually hibernate in different places. Some shelter under tree bark, others sleep under leaf litter etc.

Ladybirds-fly-74-miles-one-Research-shows-insects-travel-fast-racehorse-fly-height-3-600ft.

Up until now, scientists believed that anything over seven foot was a long-distance flight for a ladybird - but the new data shows they can actually travel up to 74 miles in a single flight.

The study of the common or garden ladybird was undertaken using a monitoring device at Rothamsted Research, an agricultural research institution based in Harpenden, Hertfordshire.

I had promised the Bridgend & District Camera Club a seaside sunset; I didn't think I was going to be lucky, it had been pouring with rain for hours but metcheck.com was telling me that at sunset the rain would stop. It did, just minutes before our appointed meet time and so twelve members of the club were treated to this glorious sunset.

It was also a chance to try out my new Gitzo mini-tripod - I just love it, however did I manage without one before now!

This is actually a residence in Clemmons, NC - Its been one of my favorite local homes since I first saw it. It was for sale a while back and silly me thought about buying it - until I found out the price - yikes!! Although the water wheel was not on at this time - it usually is and from what I understand actually powers a generator in the house.

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795

www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...

I managed to very quickly capture this scene on Thursday evening at the end of day three of my four-day workshop in the Lake District. I drove my clients to Coniston from the amazing Cathedral Cavern only to find the fantastic colours in the sky had arrived as we turned up.

A mad dash to the water's edge saw around fourteen photographers on a workshop all line the banks of Monk Pier but thanks to my seven foot Gitzo tripod, I was able to shoot the scene over the heads of those who were stood in front of me. The looks on their faces when they turned around and looked up at the sheer height of the camera was priceless.

Anyhow, here's what I managed to capture before helping a couple of my clients set up. I can often set up and shoot an image before my clients have set up their cameras so I often only have literally two to three minutes. Still, that's all I needed on this occasion. I hope you all like it and feel free to share it if you wish :D

I ran a workshop on the Isle of Skye three weeks ago and during a seriously windy morning up on the Quiraing, this amazing rainbow suddenly appeared right in front of us. Fortunately, I had my camera ready to shoot off a couple of frames. Rainbows seem to be following me around at the moment, with or without colour.
