In around 1285, the Count of Holland Floris V (1254 – 1296) ordered the construction of a stone keep at a strategic location at the mouth of the river Vecht, the most important waterway to the diocese of Utrecht. In 1296, Floris V was kidnapped during a falcon hunt and later murdered by his own nobles and his castle was destroyed. From 1370, the original Muiderslot was restored and expanded with a residential wing facing the Zuiderzee. The castle was strengthened with earthen walls and bastions in 1576.

I decided to include an excerpt from the Tourism guide of Smuggler Cove, considering it is far more interesting than my simple trek.

"This area has some notable history as the cove was used to transport Chinese workers into the United States in the late-1800's. Then, during the period of prohibition, smugglers would hide from authorities in the cove as they transported alcohol south into the United States."

Amanecer en una de las nuevas pasarelas de Los Urrutias, Mar Menor, Cartagena

Standing in the middle of the street seems a little disconcerting, except perhaps one so infrequently used. However, with one eye ahead and the other looking back, this is the result. And, all just to get the shot. At this point I was on my way back to the car when the colors at the base of the mountain stood out. As any photographer would, I then noticed that the color of the leading line matched the distant colors at that base. What had drawn me out was the bad weather, and what had drawn me in was that same disturbance that now filled the sky. You never know till you go, and this one went well.

The False Creek area of Vancouver is so often filled with the vitality of life. People walking, people watching, people living, there is much to see and much to do. On this occasion, the inlet also had an enormous ocean going sailboat. I hazard to guess it's size, but it was a real beauty. I spent hours in the area watching as the sun went down and how its rays effected the area, especially this sailboat.

I watched as the owners returned and how their very large and loud dog greeted them as they boarded. Much later and long after the sun had set, the blue hour began. It was then the lights came on in and around the city. More photos were had of the area and as the sky dimmed, the city lights became more dominant. As well, the blue lights on the sailboat did the same. Now the warm and the cool were playing together, just before the sky turned black. I found the experience to be exciting so it is a good thing my camera sits on a tripod.

If you are a Sean Connery fan, you will recognize the title from his movie, The Hunt for Red October.

Taken last Friday evening at one of Ireland's most spectacular locations, the Cliffs of Moher. I was very fortunate to have a local photographer by the name of Sean Kitson accompany me to this location as it is not the usual place people shoot this scene from. The sunset was lovely with the colours radiating in the sky but this shot was taken just before the sun dropped below the horizon.

I love how the last warm rays of the sun light up the cliff faces beautifully while the flowers in the foreground stand over the surrounding views. Isn't it just lovely? This will be just one of the places we will be visiting on my Wild Atlantic Way Workshop next March (the North-North West workshop will take place this September).

I hope you all like it. Have a great evening whatever you happen to have planned and feel FREE to share it if you wish :D

Sitting on a lone bench in the Cove and resting, I caught myself contemplating. "Let the image come to me I thought". No visualizing, just know that out there is a photo, I just have to see it. The sun was quite low in the sky, and one could feel its warmth. That short time before evening when it is replaced with the cooler temperature. Colors change hue for a short time and the opportunity to capture them becomes fleeting.

Right across the Cove from where I was sitting, a small tree made its presence known because its background fell into shade. The light was intense, the reflection somewhat still, and with the passing moments, the shadowed area grew darker. Here was the photo I could not see, but was looking right at me. Without getting up, I set up my tripod, switched lens' and captured the moment. It really is so often about the light, even when you have a good composition.

"I find that if I just sit down and think... The solution presents itself." Quote is from Sean Connery in Indians Jones and the last Crusade.

The other night we had planned to make pizza and enjoy it at the beach while watching the sunset. We also enjoyed a walk along the Davis Bay ocean side walkway. When it was time to leave the sun had passed the point of no return for the evening and it was time to setup for a shot. We tried two different areas and this is the result of the second. I would be most interested in your comments regarding this composition because it includes three distinct sections. A foreground, a middle ground and a background.

Let me know your thoughts.

This little humbug is only 2 days old

Captured a few days before Christmas just minutes before the storm front hit the shore. Spectacular, wet and cold experience!

I was watching a video on photography where the topic was sharpness. The history of why it became important was discussed while the notion of an artistic form was also debated. This image is a little bit of both in respect to this topic and that informative episode.

While the rocks are tack sharp, we see movement in the ducks that just refused to sit still. Always on the move; do they add or detract from the artistic nature of the final product?

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795

Good evening everyone and I have been delving back into the archives for tonight's image as I am so busy putting the final touches on a lot of exciting events that I will be able to reveal in the coming days.

So, onto the image in question. I have been photographing this scene for over ten years now and I never, EVER tire of it. It's the beautiful Castle Crag (the small triangular fell in the centre distance which incidentally just so happens to be the lowest Wainwright that exists).

This shot was captured during a workshop back in late October 2016 when all of the wonderful autumnal colours were out in full bloom. I have deliberately gone for a long exposure to smooth out the water which for me suits the scene wonderfully well. Long exposure images also tend to pull out the available colour too which generally allows for a more impactful image. The sky was fantastic too. Real drama present.

I hope you like it. p.s. note the white bird on the post?

I captured this truly stunning scene on Friday during day two of my two day workshop. We arrived nice and early to give us time to look around and see what my clients would like to shoot. After giving them some advice on which part of this wonderful landscape I would photograph, we all set up and waited for the magic to happen.

There were some fantastic cloud structures which held in the gorgeous orange colours. The reflection of the sun on the water was a joy to witness and my clients were so happy to have experienced a beautiful sunrise. psssst. Don't tell anyone, so was I ;-)

I hope you all had a great weekend :D

I love waterfalls, large ones, small ones, it doesn't matter and sometimes, as in this case, the smaller the better. Cauldron Falls in a wonderful series of small waterfalls that lie in the River Etive that nestles in the dark autumnal red and brown bracken of Rannoch Moor.

This photograph was taken at the end of a session with my clients in which I was demonstrating the effectiveness of using a wide angle lens, which is something that I am partial to using.

I hope you all like it and please feel free to SHARE if you wish.

Taken before the lockdown first began in March of this year

Looking out towards the Atlantic Ocean from the Ocean Path - just North of Thunder Hole....what a gorgeous weekend !!

A menacing and sinister looking cloud sat over an apartment building on the far bank of the reservoir. As it churned and blustered it reminded me of my high school English class in Shakespeare. How it too would carry on in some indignant way that would have no effect.

Macbeth - "Life's but a walking shadow; a poor player, that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."
