An ancient bristlecone pine in one of North America’s most inhospitable, yet uniquely beautiful environments. These trees are some of the oldest in the world, some reaching over 4,500 years of age. The twisted, gnarled growth stand as a testament to the bristlecone's ability to thrive in the conditions found above 10,000 feet in elevation .

The loss of a night's sleep was a small price to pay to be out under the stars photographing these majestic tress. The oldest of these Bristlecone Pines were growing at the time the Woolly Mammoth went extinct and Stonehenge was being completed.

Taken in the early morning at Rodney Stoke NNR on the Mendips in Somerset.

My first butterfly image of the year and as it happened, the only butterfly I could find during the time I was at this location.

I am not sure if this is a bit earlier than normal to find Common Blues, especially on the mendips when everything tends to be a bit later anyway, I usually to go looking for them towards the end of May. Either way I was very happy to have found this one.

Snow, Fall Foliage, Sun, Clouds and the San Juan Mountains by Bryan Carnathan

After spending a late September day scouting from Crested Butte to Durango and back north to near Telluride with practically no pictures captured, the sun finally broke through an opening in the heavy clouds that had produced rain and the season's first snow for most of the day. This is the breathtaking scene that was presented to me.

Capturing attractive landscape images with a telephoto lens is sometimes so easy that it almost feels like cheating. I safely pulled off the road, setup and quickly shot until the sun went back behind the curtain of heavy clouds.

Looking for a fall foliage photography trip? Few locations are better than the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. The aspen trees play a starring role in this spectacular landscape.

While it is painful to get up early enough to photograph the sunrise in early summer (4:20 AM in this case), early summer is the right time of the year to photograph the Portland Lighthouse and the distant Ram Island Lighthouse from this angle with the sun in the frame.

With the middle daughter accompanying me, I arrived at Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth, ME just before sunrise. I selected one specific composition to concentrate on during the prime shooting minutes, timed the rotating lighthouse light, bracketed exposures and, when capturing the foreground rocks being hit with the first light rays of the day, adjusted focus to a closer distance.

This image is composed primarily of three source images run through a complicated manual HDR process with manual focus-stacking. After the big effort made to capture this image (a long drive in addition to the early alarm), I was anxious to see how this photo turned out. It was the first-processed from my recent photo trip to Maine. I'm happy with the result – it was definitely worth my effort.

I'm also very happy with the 5Ds R and 16-35 f/4L IS combination. I can say that they "rock".

Hello Everyone!

I'll start off by wishing everyone a happy and easy week. As mentioned in my post yesterday, I spent the past weekend taking photos all over New York with one of my friends. Friday we decided to walk the Brooklyn Bridge to "Empire Fulton Ferry State Park" to set up for some sunset photos.

We were about to pack up and leave when all of a sudden a massive storm blew in out of no where. Although we were there to focus on the Brooklyn Bridge, I noticed a lightning storm north of where we were standing. I pointed the camera NW and framed a shot with the Manhattan Bridge. Sure enough I managed to capture several shots with lightning bolts. This was the last shot I took before massive raindrops started falling. We quickly packed up our gear into our bags and covered them with the pullout rain covers.

Many people think that capturing a lighting shot is all about quick reflexes. It's not, here's the little secret.... It's all about long exposures. Set the focus to infinity and grab several long exposures.

Yunnan Province, China

In the far north of Yunnan Province, past a small town of Deqin, lies a view of the Meili Snow Mountain Range. The main mountain of attraction is Kawakarpo (or Kawagebo or Mount Meili) but to its south and 700m lower in altitude is Miancimu (Kawakarpo's wife according to legend). This mountain is probably more photogenic that Kawakarpo itself but seems to get far less attention.

I took this image as part of a larger pano but I decided in the end that these 2 frames deserved a piece of the action by themselves. Taken on a frosty morning from just outside Fei Lai with 3 hard GND, the trusty gitzo tripod and sigma 70-200. I look forward to taking images of mountains on my upcoming trip with the new canon edition of that lens to see if there is any difference in image quality!. I was worried about the banding that appears on the image but as a test print at 12X18" , there was no apparent banding. phew!

Moonrise over the Chisos by Darren Huski

The full moon rising behind Emory Peak and the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park.

Knowing the moon would rise after sunset but before it was completely dark I set up a vantage point to catch them rise over the mountains. I set up my big Gitzo tripod with my 70-200 lens using my Sony A6100 to get the extra "reach" of the crop sensor. With twilight still happening, the moon began to rise right behind the highest point, Emory Peak. I was able to capture the moon while keeping the ground decently lit by the waning light before night.

A little planning and a lot of luck!

I never get any sunrise photographs because I like to sleep! However after spending so much time on Oahu I was wanting to capture something different and found a great location on the east side of the Island. You must hike down to the small beach but if you are willing to get up early it makes for a great sunrise location. The waves on the east side of Oahu can be treacherous and as you can see they were just swirling into the beach. I used 5 shots to get this panorama and had to time my shots so the wave action would match when I stitched them together in Photoshop CS6's merge to pano. I have shot this location many times and have found that an umbrella, a change of clothes, and a camera cover such as the Think Tank Hydrophobia that I use are absolutely necessary! I also spent a lot of time cleaning my gear afterward as there was a nice thick coat of salt water on everything!
