From Gitzo.com: "Gitzo developed the revolutionary Leveling tripod for photographers who need fast set-up and levelling accuracy. Inside the Leveling tripod’s upper casting is a special free-rotating ball, similar to those normally used in our ball heads. The center column passes through this ball and can both be moved up and down, and be inclined in any direction at any angle up to 15°. The inclination and vertical movements are completely independent. This patented system is extremely useful for panoramic, outdoor and wildlife photographers or for bird watching because the Leveling system allows the camera or scope to be set perfectly horizontal easily and quickly when working on uneven ground. Leveling tripods are available in two heights, eye level and standard, and in two materials, Carbon 6X and Basalt. Leveling tripods now also benefit from many other new Gitzo features that improve performance, versatility and quality.
intended use:
The Leveling tripod is the ideal support for fluid heads. It introduces a new degree of integration between head and tripod: the Leveling tripod sets the camera perfectly horizontal while the fluid head allows pan and tilt movements."

I recently purchased a used Markins Q3T for my Gitzo GT1541T Tripod. Originally I had the Q3 but after researching I saw that the Q3T has a smaller base meant to accommodate the base on the Gitzo 1 Series Traveler Tripod (1541, 1542, 1544...) and allowing the tripod legs to fold up and fit "flush" against the head. My Q3T also has the quick release plate. I previously used a PhotoClam 33 Ballhead (cheaper than Markins and also Korean) and have had nothing but great experiences with it. Though, the knobs are slightly more accurate on the Markins heads. As far as the Quick Release vs Knob, it comes down to preference as both securely hold the camera.

A sunset view of a bit of my gear out among the cacti. I was running around the desert like mad with a macro lens taking advantage of the last couple minutes the sun was up. In view is my Gitzo GT1258 tripod, G1276M head, LowePro CompuTrekker II bag, and a bunch of lenses laying on a Domke wrap.
