This is a fantastic location and one that I visited for the very first time today with my good friend Tony Higginson after wanting to find it for a couple of years or so now. Banishead Quarry has a waterfall (approx 80ft) that drops into the clear waters of below.

There's quite a difficult and dangerous climb down the side of the steep banking to reach the water's edge but if you're prepared to risk it, the reward awaits. The colours in the rocks are just amazing. Reds, yellows, oranges, greens, blues, they're all here. It's a really beautiful place to visit and it's only around a couple of miles from the car too.

I hope you all like it and feel free to SHARE and as always thank you for doing so.

Colour Version

Despite only having claimed an hour's sleep at 3am on the ferry from Holyhead to Dublin overnight and feeling absolutely shattered, I wanted to share this image of the wonderful Great Pollet Sea Arch that I shot at sunset.

I felt a long exposure time of 30 seconds was required in order to smooth out the water enough to isolate the sea arch. The tide was coming in and the absence of some great sunset colours was missed but actually, I think that I have captured something rather nice myself.

What do you think?

I will be creating a four-day workshop for the North, North-West of Ireland next week to be run this September. If you are interested in attending, please contact me.

Photography is many things to many people and often many things to me too. Sometimes you simply want to capture a moment in time almost as a record shot which is fine other times though you want to capture on camera a feeling or an emotion or try to convey what you felt when stood there looking up at the sky.

This image of a gorgeous misty morning at Holme Fell in the Lake District back on a cold wintery morning in January earlier this year during a workshop that I was leading, is one such image that for me conveys exactly how I was feeling. The fierceness of the sun being held back by the softness of the mist among the three trees around the tarn was a joy to photograph.

This is the sort of image I intend on capturing more this coming winter. I hope you all like it and it is available as a print should anyone wish to purchase one. Contact me for more details.

Gorgeous water - so refreshing

Thank you for all of your views, notes, comments and favorites. Will try to catch up with everyone soon.

I was woken at 4am by thunder and lightning this morning whilst sleeping in my minibus so I hurridly got dressed and drove the half mile journey to the pier and quickly set up.

Firing off dozens of images between five and thirty seconds, I was hoping for some lightning action over the pier and this is one of a handful of images where I captured the lightning and the best one of that handful.

I packed up once it started raining and it was a good move as no more lightning was seen.

Right place, right time and with the pier having a high tide at the time, the lit pier lamps reflect nicely in the water. A really fantastic way to spend an hour or so first thing in the morning.

A shot I have been after for a while now which had me visit it at 4am a week last Thursday morning having driven overnight from Preston to get there before sunrise.

What a place this is, truly stunning with some fantastic views although at 4am, you can see bugger all except for the towering cliffs that you have to walk around along the very tight path. I was careful not to fall into the water below while trying to decide on a place to shoot from.

This is an image made up of three different exposures as it is almost impossible to shoot and keep detail in the shadow and highlight areas. I am very happy with how it turned out. If you get a chance to visit it for yourself, do so. The south-east coastline of Scotland (East Lothian) is a really beautiful and dramatic part of the world to photograph.

I will be emailing out a blog tomorrow of my five day roadtrip to Scotland last week. I'm just writing it up now (I hope you all book a week off work to read it, ha, ha).

I hope you've all had a great weekend. Let me know what you've been upto if you fancy :D

What an amazing day I've had today running a workshop at the beautiful Holme Fell and Hodge Close Quarry with six fantastic clients.

Here is a shot that I quickly captured while giving my clients time to set up their cameras. The low sun slowly rose up from behind the fell while the heavy mist gave an ethereal and hauntingly beautiful feel to Holme Fell. This wonderful tree made the perfect subject to shoot but timing is everything and I had to wait a couple of minutes to ensure that the sun was in just the right place behind the tree itself.

When taking photos in a woodland area, often the best advice is, "don't photograph the trees". Rather, capture elements of the forest that contribute to the composition and support the narrative. Those thoughts occurred to me when shooting this waterfalls, that has no name.

Capturing the color of the water in the shadows was the firest element. The second would be the warm colored rocks that are closer to the light. Next, catch the flow and the trail of the water as it lands and travels beyond the image. Finally, emphasize details that illustrate shadowed areas, rock formation, and plant life. Borrowing a saying from the woodland genre, would guide the composition of this image, that illustrates the narrative.

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

A glorious morning during my three-day workshop in the Lakes between Christmas and New Year. I was explaining the joys of composition to my three clients when I spotted a wheelbarrow in the water a hundred yards up the lake. I don't need asking twice. In I went and positioned it perfectly (to my mind anyway). I mean who does not love a wheelbarrow in the middle of a long exposure image of a beautiful little bay in the Lake District in winter?

Exactly.

I rolled into the twilight zone that is Holywell Bay. I call it the twilight zone because I had neither internet reception on my mobile OR phone signal which is somewhat surprising considering the popularity of the place on the coast.

I walked the fifteen minute wander down to the beach from the main car park, met a couple of other photographers standing there shooting the beautiful sea stacks before they left as the light faded. I decided to stay on and capture the dramatic stormy skies post sunset. This is a panorama of six vertical images with an overlay of around 30% to allow Lightroom CC to work its magic (Photoshop CC did a slightly lesser job in stitching this together for some reason although there wasn't much in it between the two programs but when you're after the best quality you can produce, any little improvement is a help.

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795

www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...

I am heading back to the beautiful Lake District National Park to run a three-day workshop Weds, Thurs and Fri this week and I cannot wait. I have three clients who will be joining me for three wonderful days of landscape photography. What a fantastic way to end the year.

So with that in mind, I thought that I would share with you an image that nobody has seen before, the fantastic Moss Force Falls in the Newlands Valley on the road between Keswick and Buttermere. Now, this has to be perhaps the most accessible waterfall in the Lake District. It is only 200 metres from the free roadside car park and it is split into three sections but together it measures 328 feet in height. Quite impressive indeed.

This photograph here was taken during a four-day workshop back in October when I was demonstrating various techniques which involved standing pretty close to the edge of the drop while maintaining my nerve and using a wide angle lens to capture the whole scene in one shot. I had my clients stand back a safe distance from the edge, while I set up their cameras and tripods before handing them their cable release to take the shot themselves. Client safety is always a priority for me as no shot is worth dying for.

Anyhow, I hope you all like it. Have a great day and feel free to SHARE as usual if you wish.

I captured this stunning view last Wednesday morning on the first day of my three-day workshop I was running in the Lake District. The light was beautiful with some stunning clouds.

I knew the night before from the water levels indicated on a website that I use when researching the location that the water level would be perfect for this shot.

I love shooting this scene with the water halfway up the gate and you can only go when the water is at the right height, the light and colour in the sky was an added bonus.

When it was time to setup for an evening shot, the sun was teasing me with light. Although present and to my left, it was timidly hiding behind a low cloud. It seemed to mock me with its faint glow, provoking a shot, then just as quickly hiding, as if playing some game.

However, I knew the chance for side lighting would come because the clouds had vacated the horizon. I composed the shot with the use of tiny puddles in the mud. They appear disproportionate to the scene with the lens inches away. But lead the viewer in. Then for a moment the canceled becomes the revealed, and the side lighting changes the scene, helping shapes take form.

Well here's another image that features in my latest YouTube video that I shared with you all last night. If you have yet to watch it, simply click on the link below to see this image and many more as well as me rambling on in the falling snow. It really was a winter wonderland :D

Come and join me on my Harris and Lewis Photography Workshop 2nd-8th March 2019 £1,395

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/harris-lewis-sco...

Well today was my last full day of photography on this quite remarkable island of Lewis and Harris and this location was to be the final one of the day/week/amazing photography holiday.

I have had a fantastic time with three very good friends all week, lots of laughter, fun and humorous stories have been had which is always good for the head, heart and soul. Thanks Mick, Tony and Brian for the memories.

.

Personally I always love finishing an epic trip to somewhere new with a fantastic location as it kind of has me send of the place in style and this wonderful little beach awaited us this afternoon. We arrived to find it completely free of footprints which is remarkable and it allowed us to compose our shots carefully.

The rolling waves were perfectly timed and just the right height and intensity to deliver us some cracking photos such as this one.

My verdict on the Isle of Lewis and Harris?

This is my first time of visiting and it has been an education and a real pleasure in discovering the many different sides and locations of this fine island. I have found it to be remote, desolate in parts, much larger than I first thought with some quite outstanding beaches, sea stacks and rocky outcrops. It really does feel different to the mainland, very earthy, no-nonsense way of living but seemingly free of complications and modern life and actually that isn't a bad thing.

I have decided to run a workshop here later in the year, either a four or a five day one with a maximum of five places. If you're interested in joining me, let me know and you'll be the first to hear of my future plans for this quite wonderful island.

I hope you have all enjoyed my photos and exploits from Lewis and Harris this week and I have shot a video of me today which I will edit once home (it will be live on YouTube early next week).

Thanks for all your comments, likes and general interaction this week, it has been great having you along for the ride. I'm off to Dorset on Wednesday for five days to run a two day 1-2-1 with a new client followed by a one day workshop on the Sunday which I am delighted to announce that the one and only Take-a-View Landscape Photographer of the Year 2016-17 Matthew Cattell will be joining me as a special guest for the day.

So for those of you who have booked on to the workshop, there's a little treat for you and if there's a couple of you out there interested in joining us at Durdle Door, Bat's Head, Man 'o' War Bay and Kimmeridge Bay for the day, click here to book.
