Found a new friend in the garden this morning.

Day 199 of 365

Sloth bear (Melursus ursinus) born ~ 2 years at Woodland Park Zoo and now living in San Diego as part of the Species Survival Plan for their species. Sloth bears are native to the Indian subcontinent and feed on fruits, ants and termites. Perhaps the most famous sloth bear is Baloo from The Jungle Book.

Break time for Mr. Bumble Bee.

A nighttime shot, the mantis eating a fuzzy moth and making a real mess of it.

This mantis showed up in considerably worse condition than I last saw it (I think it's the same mantis, at least), with a damaged and blackened mouth and curled and broken antennae. It still was quite the menace in our patio planters, though. It had prey in its grasp more often than not when I spied it.

Not my best macro shot, but I did like the colors and bokeh.

Orange Rump Bumble bee.

He just don't like snitches.

Apologies for not catching up with my flickr friends this week, it's been a bit fraught. I took this leafless tree at Toowong beside the Brisbane River as it's curly and fuzzy branches and twigs were a bit different. Goodness knows if it is dead or just deciduous. Otherwise it is just The Tree!

My first phone really did not take great after dark shots did it as this is a square of blur. A better photo of 201 this time at the Fredrick Street roundabout as it turns onto George Street on a service 10 to Western Harbour.

A Vole(possibly a Bank Vole, not sure)

Greta and her precious yellow fuzzy. She'll move this to my most common spaces I occupy in the house (TV chair, bathroom, shoes, work desk,...) when I am gone as her gift to me. She and I are pretty obsessed with the routine.

Dude Benchmark is the distant peak with the red/pink cliffs. It was windy and cold but this outcropping was clearly still a worthwhile place to stop.

Cute Woolly Bear Caterpillar strutting his stuff. :)

While mushrooms are my subject, my focus was capturing the entire scene, illustrating an old yet constantly renewing ecosystem. The soft light was captivating and it also reminded me of Michigan’s Armillaria on the northern peninsula, it has remained genetically stable for nearly 2500 years. The mushroom is the reproductive structure of the fungus, releasing spores to propagate. We tend to think of it as an individual 'plant' but it's not.
