A wonderful winter walk with wonderful Friends

After photographing the Namahage Sedo Festival in the Akita Prefecture of Japan in February we went to the top of Mt. Moriyoshi to see the snow monsters. We were snowshoeing among skiers in cloudy and windy weather. The visibility was poor except for a short time when I took this shot, and it was cold. Worth visiting this otherworldly place in winter!

I processed a balanced and a paintery HDR photo from two RAW exposures, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

Three seasons of Niagara Falls

Taken with two different cameras with three different lenses and different shutter speeds and times of day at three different locations and focal lengths...

In other words this was unplanned.

See behind the scenes

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”

― Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland / Through the Looking-Glass

Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D5000 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.

A beautiful day after a heavy snow storm.

I was just lucky enough to catch the right time before the lucid cristals started to melt from the trees.

A wonderful winter walk with wonderful Friends

Winter is not done yet. After being lulled into a false sense of an early spring Old Man Winter reminded us once again that this is his time of year.

I snapped this just as the temperatures were starting to rise and the sun was peaking over the horizon. The mist is rising gently off the lake and the clouds are reacting to sun and temp creating a beautiful pink and lavender sky. The trees are screaming for Spring as I am!

Kuntivaara sunrise, low forest in Finland at the Russian border

The following day. Trees are still icy but the sky is a little bit bluer.

Riisitunturi National Park at sunrise, Finland

Photographing in my backyard...15 min from home.

Because i had hardly any snow this year (so far), one from the archive.

After a night with a very thick fog and -10 on the scale, the next morning started beautiful when the sun came out and showing the beauty of winter. Taken not that far from were i live. A location i visit often, and maybe i post next year a summer version of from this place.

Enjoy...

A wonderful winter walk with wonderful Friends

"While I relish our warm months, winter forms our character and brings out our best." - Tom Allen

-----

With a harsh slap to the face, winter is back and with a vengeance; after weeks of fairly mild weather where only a light jacket was needed today hit the face like a brutal backhand.

It was the kind of day that has you wondering why on Earth you live in a place where the air hurts your face...

But then you stop a minute to crack the frozen tears from your eyelashes and look around and realise just how pretty a winter wonderland can be, even if it does feel like your fingers may fall off as you fire the camera.

Anyway, hope everyone has had a good day.

When Times & Weather are Frozen

We had frozen rain in our neck of the woods. I took this on my way to work this morning. The trees outside are coated in ice, giving a beautifully surreal look.

I've not been out in the Peaks for a few weeks due to work commitments and feeling a little run down lately but this was a chance shot while on a short journey over the top of my home town of Wirksworth. It was taken in the afternoon and the frost has not cleared at all today, the temperature never went above freezing and I had my wife and granddaughter in the back of the car waiting. I didn't bother with the tripod as they were wanting to get home, this was the result. I took a few more quick ones and have them to upload later. I'm on nights tonight and it looks like being a cold one, I bet I'll be out all night again.
