LARGE version!

A new colony of a large number of immature fungi emerging from the cut end of an old tree trunk in Surrey woodland. I believe this is Bitter Oyster (Panellus stipticus).

Near Shell Creek Rd. (across Highway 58),

Eastern San Luis Obispo Co., California

I chose this scene (& perspective) because it is one of the most concentrated patches of color in the vicinity. On April 4 the San Luis Obispo Tribune quoted Daniel Sinton (owner of the Shell Creek Rd. property which is so visited by flower-watchers) as saying it is a better display than last year. I disagree, as do the friends in my group.

This photo was recently brought up in discussion. I don't believe I ever posted it here though.

This is the Grinter Farms field of Sunflowers in Kansas. I woke up crazy early one morning and headed out for photos.

This brief illustration and text gives a simple overview and example of the use of Focus Stacking. I used this to illustrate the technique to a group of non-geek people and explain the difficulty of obtaining sufficient depth of field with a subject like this diorama and the way Focus Stacking can solve the problem!

Additional info...this was lit with an AlienBee B800, 1/32 power, 20degree grid from the right side, a Nikon SB26 at 1/64 power with a Rogue Flash reflector in the bottom of the display case...pointed up to illuminate the interior 'framework' of the blimp. AlienBee CyberSynch radio triggers were used for both strobes. Images for the Focus Stack were obtained by manually incrementing the focus from near to far, a total of 20 images were finally used.

Focusstacking

Four different early thorn moths (Selena dentaria), that came to a light trap over two nights. Thorns are amongst the prettiest British moths, with complex patterns in brown and pink, although even after a day or two they had begun to fade. Note the variation in wing shape and colouration, although the salient points are the same. This is much reduced in size from the four base images, each a stitched panorama of two focus stacks (as the moths were slightly too large to fit into the field of view at 1:1 magnification).

A total of 277 base images, taken with the Canon EOS 5Ds and MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x macro lens at 1x. Ambient lighting, Live View, macro rail, timer release, variable exposures but approx. 1s each, f/6.3, ISO 400. Focus stacked in Affinity, retouched in Lightroom.
